Rumblings of Change at Rev. Moon's Paper

Reporting on the doings inside the Washington Times, the Unification Church and the myriad other operations controlled by Sun Myung Moon has kept journalists busy for many years, and there's a growing sense of urgency to such stories, as the old man gets on in years and the financial pressures on the vanity publication grow ever more intense.

Now comes The Nation with a look at a bubbling battle over who will run the paper in the coming years; the magazine makes the struggle out to be both generational and ideological. Moon's son, Preston, is portrayed as a force bent on moderating the daily's conservative outlook and purging the staff of some folks who have links to some seriously out-there organizations.

It's been almost a decade since Post investigative editor Jeff Leen and I took a look at the Moon empire and its financial , personal and spiritual strains. From all reports, the newspaper's losses have continued despite some significant cost-cutting.

Of course, even in the face of troubles for all newspapers, Washington's lineup of dailies has expanded considerably of late, with two giveaways, the Examiner and Express (a publication of the Post's parent company), joining the Post and the Times. What's the long-term outlook for the Times? That depends wholly on what happens to Moon's businesses after he dies. Some of these enterprises are major operations that produce an impressive flow of cash--they won't fold overnight. But both the Moon family and the organization that runs its businesses have suffered significant in-fighting in recent years, and insiders say there will be struggles on several levels after the old man goes.

Quite frankly, the Washington Times could benefit from a more moderate influence in its news operation. For all of the historical snivelings of conservatives over what they perceive a liberal bias in most mainstream news, they seem completely oblivious to their own biases in reporting news.

And, even a cursory screening of the op-ed pages of leading conservative news outlets as compared to the more mainstream outlests reveals that the mainstream outlets are fr more likely to host conservative contributors than are the conservative news outlets are to offer space to liberals.

Just check it out and you will see what I am getting at.

I just find it amazing that a self-serving wacko like Moon can exercise so much influence in American politics. We should depose every elected official who takes money from him.

Speaking of money: that would be a great investigation. Who takes money from Moon?

I haven't paid the Post a cent in decades. It warms my heart (and saves trees).

Fisher writes of Moon's empire that "Some of these enterprises are major operations that produce an impressive flow of cash--they won't fold overnight." Based on what evidence? Ever see any SEC or IRS filings? One thing you won't see: a publically listied Moon Enterprises.

One reads (less and less) occaionally about Moon's financial empire, but usually in reference to schemes that go bust, lose money, or run affoul of tax authorities. There was a colony in rural Brazil, a casino in Punta del Este, a Montevideo bank that failed, a Cayman tax shelter, a Washington newspaper. Evidently, the only positive side of the ledger is faith based with no questions asked. Woe to ye of little faith. Blessed are the high rollers.

Lunar- Rev. Moon has a sucessful sushi & fish distribution company. According to a Chicago Trib article over the summer, they supply the sushi for most sushi restaurants in the US.

Moon has no editorial control of the Times. He hires conservative editors who think as he does.
You'll notice that any time he wants something printed in the paper it is in a paid advertisement just like anyone else.

I stopped reading the Times when they reported finding Noah's Ark on the front page.

I hope the Times sticks around for a while, if nothing more than to provide a little balance to sniviling liberalism of the Post

Posted by: Anonymous | September 29, 2006 1:00 PM

Man I *wish* the Post were as liberal as the Times is conservative. In my dreams!

I actually had a college professor (he was brand new) who taught that there was no bias in the media (Politics and the Media). I don't care what side of the fence you're on- EVERYONE knows there's bias. I tried to have an intelligent discussion with him and provide examples from both sides- he took to grading down my papers... ah, memories...

I sort of liked the fact that the Times had the T.O. story on the first page above the fold. The Post at least just had his picture and a reference on the first page below the fold.

Come on people! Do you want to be considered a serious newspaper or not?

George Archibald at The Huffington Post reports:

The second most powerful editor at The Washington Times is a white supremacist racist who says blacks are "born genetically 15 to 20 IQ points lower than a white person" and that abortion is necessary "to keep the black and minority population down in this country."
His wife, Marian, confirmed this, on the record, in an interview with reporter Max Blumenthal for the Oct. 9 issue of The Nation magazine. Francis B. Coombs Jr., the managing editor of The Washington Times, a major media ally of the Bush administration, is described by multiple newsroom sources in Blumenthal's piece as an unreconstructed "racial nationalist" and a hater of blacks and Jews.

Marc,

When do you think the Post will get around to "purging its staff of some folks who have links to some seriously out-there organizations"?

Posted by: Moon | September 29, 2006 8:28 PM

You can say all you want about Wesly Pruden, but I read all of his editorials...and I read the post too (obviously). Don't knock the times. If you want balanced news, you have to read both papers.

Moon stopping racism? Haha Moon has gotten exactly what he wanted from the paper, the promotion of extremist right wing views which have made fertile a political climate for the theocrats he also promoted and huge face for he and his organization around the world. Moon's been a major player in a our nation's politics and maybe one in a thousand know even a little about it.

Here's their likely problem and reason for acting now after all these years... African Americans have become key to Moon's plans in recent years - funding an organization run by exposed racists would put a crimp in Moon's current efforts.

You see, the Moon organization in its relentless effort to control world events has a major push to gather black ministers into its web now. The prime Moon front group in this effort is the American Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC). Moon uses this group to open doors within the black caucus here - you may have noticed the democratic names of the host committee to the ceremony in which Moon was crowned in 2004 were members of the Black caucus. Moon also uses the ACLC to open doors in the Middle East in his efforts to inject himself into the peace process over there. Of course, Moon has had the acceptance of the right in the US for decades. He has used them to push the nation hard right ever since he was an invited guest at the Reagan Bush inaugural in 1981.

If you have seen the news reports about the exploits of African Catholic Bishop Milingo, who was matched in marriage by Moon, you know another aspect to this. Milingo was excommunicated last week after consecrating four married Bishops. This ceremony took place at Milingo's new center of operations, a church which is run by one of those he named a bishop, George Stallings. Stallings is major Moon promoter who, along with two Moon operatives, runs the ACLC and is someone who I have seen in video not only declare Moon the Messiah but call Moon a "God." Moon, who espouses that only married people can enter heaven, is supplying the backbone to Milingo's "Married Priest Now" group which, I am sure the Catholic Church would say, is subverting the priesthood. A long time follower of Moon set up Milingo's website for this. Moon is picking a fight with the Catholic Church but I doubt they understand that fully yet.

Too bad major news source reporting isn't done on his organization anymore. The masses no nothing about the influence Moon and his overseas cash have played in our political landscape. The fact is, the conservative movement we see today wouldn't be as extreme nor in power without him. That is something Rush and FOX won't tell their followers. Moon has spent billions manipulating our political climate.

I think few, if any, of his businesses are profitable, even with the "volunteer" labor. One main source of his cash, which the Unification Church has been found responsible for by the courts in Japan, is through swindling of the Japanese, targeting widows. This is discussed in detail here:

Marc you and the WP did some fine reporting on Moon years ago, why did you stop? He didn't.

Your work is discussed here:

Moon now has his own United Nation's which many countries are falling for, he owns UPI and 4500 square miles of South America including land over the largest supply of fresh drinking water on the planet. They say, and there is little doubt of it, that they play a role in our negotiations with North Korea. Moon has a stated goal of making a united Korea his "sovereign nation" and run his political influence from there so you can guess whose side he is on in the talks. Abass endorsed one of their "peace" conferences in the Middle East. People laugh at Moon. He is getting the last laugh but the major media doesn't inform, so people don't know. The media doesn't inform so Moon can gather African Ministers into his web, they only hear Moon's propaganda.

The WP didn't report Moon's crowning until two months after it occurred. Why did it take a blogger to post video of it before you acted? There were many photos and much information about it long before then.

This is much bigger national and world security issue than anything else going on and the people have been left totally in the dark about it.
