Random Friday Question: What Will Be 2007's Summer Song?

Ideally, a great summer song is frothy, bright and silly, an uptempo number that you hear pouring out of every radio on the beach. The classics through the pop era--the Go-Gos' "Vacation," the B-52's "Love Shack" (originally a fall hit, but it became a summer standby), Sly and the Family Stone's "Hot Fun in the Summertime," Will Smith's "Summertime," and on and on.

But does every summer still get a summer song, even in the iPod era, when the songs you hear on the beach may be only the ones you program into your own ears, not the ones folks blare from boomboxes?

Sure, technology changes, but the quest for that perfect summer ditty never ceases. So says Sean Ross, a great seer of pop music who's out with his annual handicapping of the contenders for the title of Song of Summer.

Today's Random Friday Question: What will be the summer song of 2007?

Sean properly warns us that all our searching may put us right back where everyone is likely to start, with the inevitability of Justin Timberlake's "Summer Love," which is just so slick and so crisp that the other contenders start to sound like they just don't have the production values to cut it.

But summer is a time for dreaming and surely the pop music world, suffering as it is from rapidly declining sales, can strive for something a bit less predictable, no?

I love the idea that the summer song could be about something as untraditional for a seasonal ditty as a refusal to go into rehab, which happens to be the theme of Amy Winehouse's "Rehab"--not exactly bright and uptempo, but infectious in that summer song way. It's got a powerhouse, Ronnie Spectorish, throwback, churning, driving band behind it. And it's got the requisite hook that you can just hear everybody chanting along to at summer parties: "Tried to make me go into rehab, but I said, 'No, no, no....'"

The shout of "It's summertime!" at the start of Kat DeLuna's "Whine Up" could almost be enough to propel this number to summer song status; add the 19-year-old Bronx native's production of Spanish and bilingual versions of the song, and its bouncy, cheery tone, and this could be a contender.

Ross is a fan of Paula DeAnda's "Easy," which has been around for a while, but hasn't quite shot to the top. She's got a latter-day Madonna sound, which certainly sells in summer, but the main asset of this song is one remarkable line: "When I'm out shopping, it's like having a gun." So there is that.

Other possibilites: For a harder, electro club sound, there's "Hands Up" by the British band Out of Office. (Nothing especially distinctive here.) There's the Shop Boyz' "Party Like a Rockstar," which the L.A. Times nominates as the summer's hot song, but which doesn't seem to fit the category especially well.

And your vote is.....

Immediately after I saw the subject title of today's blog I thought of "Rehab". Too bad, as it has a great hook and will undoubtedly become even more overplayed than it already has become. Similar to "Crazy" last summer.

When I Go To The Beach, by The Slickee Boys.

(Video here: http://www.twintone.com/video/slickee/)

The song has yet to be released.

No doubt about it, it's Rehab.

Rhianna

You left out "Itsy-Bitsy Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini". Although the lyrics bespeak shyness about showing skin rather than celebration, the rhythm is bouncy enough to overshadow them.

It's not my cup of tea, but I'd nominate Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape." Light and bubbly (airheaded?), easy to sing along to, teenage girls already idolize her, and it's being played in the heaviest of heavy rotations.

Its basically whatever single MTV wants it to be There are a ton of "popular artists" that have already released CDs recently or are releasing CDs soon. At the same time "singles" can appear as much as two years after a CD release

Some possible artist choices include

Rhianna (from above)
Linkin Park
Daddy Yankee
Maroon 5

Just follow the billboard charts

This summer's anthem will have a reggaeton beat to it, from either Daddy Yankee or Calle 13.

Rihanna's "Shut Up And Drive," maybe?

Rehab is good, I am a walking Amy Winehouse PR machine but I have to say Chuck Brown's "Chuck Baby" -- I'm not a big Go-Go fan at all, but I LOVE that song and my friends back in Massachusetts have caught on to it as well

My FAVORITE summer time hit example was in 1979(?) when Sunkist Orange Soda ran the commercial using "Good Vibrations" as the background music. That song was played every afternoon forever on radio and tv. I could give a rat's *** what this summer's song is because I own these things called cds and am disconnected from ringtone mania.

I'm going to vote for "Ain't Nothing Wrong with That" by Robert Randolph and the Family Band. I think I could hear that song 100 times a day and not get sick of it.

Of course, I say that now...

Posted by: RRFB fan | June 8, 2007 2:22 PM

Oh - and I also just bought "Rehab" from itunes yesterday and plan on playing that all summer long. Combine that with "Ain't Nothing..." and you got a great way to start a playlist!

Jamie convinced me. Hear something enough times and you believe it...

I'm crossing my fingers that Snoop or Diddy comes out with something.
