UCLA Gets a Local

My colleague Preston Williams files this report:

All-Met Edison girls' basketball guard Doreena Campbell verbally committed to UCLA Tuesday. The Bruins, the defending Pac-10 Tournament champions, won out over Vanderbilt, Virginia and George Washington, where she also took official visits.

The 5-foot-10 Campell, regarded as a composed player who can score inside and out, last season led Edison to the Northern Region title and their first Virginia AAA state tournament berth since 1978. She averaged 21.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.9 steals and 3.4 assists for the state runners-up.

Campbell's relationship with UCLA began two summers ago when she attended camp there while visiting an aunt who lives in that area. UCLA also won out because of its medical program. Campbell is interested studying orthopedic medicine.

"When you get a student-athlete who is looking at [academics] just as strongly as [athletics], what more can you ask for," Edison Coach Dianne Lewis said.
