High Scorer at Kennedy
One other player to watch in Montgomery County is Kennedy guard Jeremy Herring. The 6-foot-2 senior, a three-year starter, is being by several colleges. He does not yet hold any scholarship offers, Coach Diallo Nelson said, but that might be only a matter of time.
"Loyola is probably recruiting him the hardest," Nelson said. "They've been to quite a few games."
Assistant coach Terrell Stokes has been out to see Herring several times and Coach Jimmy Patsos took in a victory over Clarksburg last week. Herring is averaging 25.7 points per game, including a season-best 43 points against Watkins Mill.
Monmouth and Robert Morris also are recruiting Nelson and he has received some interest from James Madison, Nelson said.
"He does a little bit of everything well," Nelson said. "He mostly plays on the wing for us. He's very athletic and shoots the ball well. If you back off him, he'll shoot the three on you. He also averages eight rebounds."
Meantime, in football, DeMatha will be well represented in Saturday's NFC playoff game between New Orleans and Philadelphia. Former Stags John Owens and Jamal Jones play for the Saints, while Brian Westbrook is the Eagles' star running back.
