Lazear Holding Off For Now
Linebacker Pat Lazear, All-Met as a junior, will not sign a letter-of-intent today, according to his father, Harry. "You'll hear it soon," Harry Lazear said.
Pat Lazear in December pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the robbery of a Bethesda Smoothie King store. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 30 days of house arrest and also received a 10-year suspended sentence.
Many colleges backed off on Lazear in the wake of the charges, though West Virginia continued to recruit him and he could very well land in Morgantown. One possible reason for a delay in Lazear signing is that any school signing Lazear likely would be asked about the decision to take Lazear; once the hubbub surrounding the signing period dies down next week, it would be much less of a public relations risk.
