G'Town Prep Lineman Hopes to Lose Big

Georgetown Prep Coach Dan Paro added an unusual wrinkle when it came to motivating lineman Edgar Sheppard to lose weight, knowing that if Sheppard can "slim" down, the bulky senior can earn a college football scholarship.

"I told him that if he got down to 299, I'd do a gasser for the whole team," Paro said.

Sheppard began the summer around 330 pounds, Paro said, and was 311 early this month before the coach and players took a break from workouts to rest up for the start of practice this coming Monday.

"Syracuse and others have looked at him and like him," Paro said. "But they want him under 300. He can play. He can move. And he's real agile. Right now, it's a little about desire. They've thrown the carrot out there and are interested in seeing him go get it. He's someone that basically everyone is anxious to see what he looks like at the start of the season. I'll be sending a lot of tape out early in the year."
