Lazear Ready to Play at WVU

So I wasn't sure what to think at first when I read this story. Should I laugh that My Main Man Pat has such a terrific memory? Should I be ticked that another journalist would give Lazear the platform to say whatever he wants and not call me? Should I just shrug it off and grow thicker skin?

For those who want the Cliff's Notes version, I wrote about the five former Whitman High football players who thought it would be a hoot to take a replica gun and rob the Smoothie King. All five were sent to other schools; three pleaded guilty to various charges and a fourth was found guilty by a jury in Montgomery County Circuit Court; the fifth had his case sent to Juvenile Court. One of the five was one-time All-Met linebacker Pat Lazear, who subsequently took a scholarship offer to play for West Virginia.

Now, Pat - who reportedly is in position to play on special teams as a freshman -- tells the West Virginia Gazette:

"Back at home with the Washington Post and the writer there, Josh Barr, he had it out for me,'' Lazear said. "He was trying to win the Pulitzer off me.''

No doubt the Pulitzer is in the mail. If not, maybe Pat or Dave Hickman can put in a good word for me. At the very least, hopefully I can get a second-place or honorable mention.

If not, oh well. For Pat's sake, I hope he doesn't follow the lead of these teammates.

FREDTERP...Meet you at Byrd Stadium,Pat will be on the field.
JB...no one needs permission to write anything these days..you proved that. Cliff notes??? That's hilarious, you made sure everyone in the US knew Pat's story. Pat is moving on, maybe you should also.

[sarcasm]A West Virginia football player with a troubled past and a sense of entitlement?

Why I am shocked. Simply shocked.[/sarcasm]

Hey JB,
Did you "google" yourself to find this article or did you "google" Pat? The obsession lives on.

Hey Prez. of PL Fan Club: It is JB's job to report on local schools and players. Lazear brought JB up, why doesn't he just drop the issue and move on. He was GUILTY!! I think everyone including JB wishes Lazear well. He made a mistake and let's all move on. That means no "Pulitzer" comments.

Pat Lazear needs to realize that as a star athlete, he is going to face more scrutiny than other persons. If he can't deal with the attention that is a direct result of his actions (helping rob a Smoothie King with a replica gun), perhaps he is in the wrong line of work.

Or, maybe he just needs to grow up before he life goes into the toilet like WVU alum Adam "Pac-Man" Jones or Michael Vick.

Typical West Virginia recruit/player. If it was not for that absurd Pac Man Jones interview on HBO, this would be one of the funnier "it's the media's fault, not mine" stories I've read in a while. I'm so glad Ralph dosen't recruit/accept losers like this kid.

Josh....There is nothing wrong with the stories you have written...The only 'wrong' done is by Pat. Who robs a smoothie king? Thats something you might see in some backwoods town on COPS, not Bethesda, MD....While I don't think this kid should go to jail for this he should have at least been forced to miss some (if not all) of his football season senior year....If this had happened to a kid on the other side of 495, he might have been in juvenile detention and never allowed to attend a normal school again.....Thank you for writing this story, good luck with that Pulitzer to by the way...hahaha, mr. lazear must think highly of himself to think that a grown man would believe that writing a story about a 3 star linebacker from maryland would catapult his career into the stratosphere.

This story is yesterday's news. Sadly the Washington Post failed to bother getting many of the facts straight in this political story and chose to crucify these kids without probing into the truth. How sad for the state of journalism today. Would expect MUCH more from the Post than that lazy excuse for coverage.

I predict that in 8 years, Pat Lazear will be serving me a banana boat smoothie, and I will give him a $1 tip.
