Terps/Turner: Things On Hold?
Spoke to Winchendon Coach Mike Byrnes this morning and he confirms that there might be a minor hiccup between guard Chris Turner and Maryland. With the Terrapins getting a commitment from Baltimore guard Sean Mosley and a commitment in hand from forward Terrence Jennings, Maryland would have only one scholarship remaining.
Before Mosley committed to Maryland, Byrnes said that Turner told other colleges that he had made up his mind, signaling his desire to accept a scholarship to play for Maryland. But the Terrapins had not extended a scholarship offer because Turner needed to show academic improvement during summer school, Byrnes said.
Turner took care of his academics, Byrnes said, but then Mosley's commitment threw things into the limbo.
Byrnes said he has not spoken to Turner since the end of summer school, but that Maryland assistant coach Keith Booth assured Byrnes that the Terps still want Turner. Byrnes expects to know more in early September, when Turner returns for the start of school and a live recruiting period begins.
"Chris really wants to go to Maryland," Byrnes said. "He was very impressed on his unofficial visit. But right now, Gary Williams needs to see Chris play. I wouldn't be surprised to see them start practice and see where their needs are. ... Coach Williams has to decide if he wants to give Chris that last scholarship."

My understanding is that Maryland is more interested in Quintrell Thomas at this point. With the backcourt overloaded for the next couple of years, the 6'8" Thomas may be a better option. Of course if Gary could somehow get Ralph Sampson III, everyone else goes by the wayside.
