Weekend Wrapup, Part I
Weekend roundup, part one. Plenty of last season's top local players are getting a chance to play as college freshmen. All-Met wide receiver Arrelious Benn caught five passes for 74 yards for Illinois in its loss to Missouri. Redshirt freshman Eddie McGee, from H.D. Woodson, took over at quarterback for the Illini after starter Juice Williams was injured. McGee was 17 of 31 for 257 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted twice and lost two fumbles, afterwards calling the game what it was: a rookie debut that will only get better, though Williams is expected back this week to play Western Illinois.
For Virginia, Peter Lalich got playing time, but Jameel Sewell remains the starter. Al Groh could only joke about the "Groh Must Go" signs in Charlottesville after a 23-3 season-opening loss to Wyoming.
