All But Over. Damascus In Control, 33-13, 7:00 Left

The teams traded punts to start the second half. Then two nice option-keepers by Hereford QB Tyler Brown totaled 50 yards. Then Nick DePaola scored on a 1-yard run up the middle. The point-after failed. Still, Damascus leads, 27-13 late in the third.

Damascus counters with Kyle Frazier's 6-yard bootleg. 33-13 late third.

Damascus holds on its own 10 to start the 4th quarter. Time to go write for the paper.

Damascus RB Evan Zedler is considered undersized (5-11, 195), but he keeps mowing down opponents in the playoffs. Zedler carried on 10 consecutive plays on the opening drive of tonigh'ts Maryland 3A final, gaining 54 yards. Then, on third-and-goal from the 5, the Swarmin' Hornets went to an empty backfield and quarterback Kyle Frazier scored on an easy 5-yard run to the left out of the shotgun. The point-after kick failed, making it 6-0 Damascus.

Hereford responded by driving down the field. A nice pop pass to the tight end made it first and goal from the 2. A fumbled handoff has it 2nd down from the 7, starting the second quarter.

One play, one second according to the official clock. Lonnie Liggins takes a sweep right seven yards for an easy Hereford touchdown. Kick good, 7-6. 11:59 left, second quarter. "Wow, that was fast!" exclaims colleague Alan Goldenbach, wondering how fast Liggins must run the 40.

Damascus answers quickly. Helped by Lee Hertel's 50-yard catch and run, it took the Hornets just six plays to go 81 yards. RB Evan Zedler scores his 10th touchdown of the playoffs on a four-yard run. Josh Francis takes the end-around in for the two-point conversion and it's 14-7 Damascus over Hereford in the Maryland 3A final with 9:29 left in the second quarter.

Next play, Damascus linebacker Josh Frederick with a big hit on a quarterback keeper, casuing a fumble that teammate Brad Harris recovered at the Hereford 17. A few plays later, QB Kyle Frazier scores on a two-yard sneak.

Hereford QB Tyler Brown sat out this series after getting hit hard and fumbling. But the Bulls kept moving the ball with backup Jason Fischer in the game. But the drive stalled and a 43-yard field goal try was short. Still 21-7, 1:09 left in the half.
Wow. Damascus takes over on its own 20, 1:09 left in the half. Zedler stuffed for no gain. Then two straight passes to WR Lee Hertel move the ball to midfield. Then a 40-yard bomb from QB Kyle Frazier to WR Mac Minturn, making a great diving catch.

After two false start penalties put the ball back to the 19, Frazier threw a 19-yard fade to Hertel, who made a great jumping catch with 9 seconds left before half. Kick failed. Damascus 27-7 at the half.

Frazier: 8-10-0 180 yards, 1 td pass. 2 td rushes
Zedler: 18-81 rushing
