U-Md. Makes a Splash With Latest Hire

Didn't get to this over the weekend because of the holidays, but I'd expect Maryland to get a big boost in its local recruiting efforts from the hiring of offensive coordinator James Franklin.

Many of the area's high school coaches remember how Mike Locksley and then Franklin worked locally for top high school players. When Franklin went to the Green Bay Packers after the 2004 season, Maryland made defensive line coach Dave Sollazzo its defensive coordinator and brought in Bryan Bossard from Delaware to recruit Prince George's County and Southern Maryland.

Things definitely changed after that, as many local high school coaches no longer felt as close to Maryland. A few pointed out that while Locksley and Franklin knew how to work a room and were regulars at their schools even when they had no players, there was rarely any contact with Maryland's staff.

While Franklin was hired as offensive coordinator and reportedly will get to run his own offense, it seems clear that part of his job will be to repair soured relationships and help Maryland get more top local players.
