Meyer Not in the Clear Just Yet

While Florida Coach Urban Meyer thinks he's out of the woods, there are reports that things might not be so rosy in Gainesville regarding the recruitment of juco WR Carl Moore. A Sacromento Bee story last month noted that Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow spoke to Moore immediately after winning the award, when Meyer called Moore and handed the phone to Tebow, an apparent NCAA violation. This comes on the heels of reports that Meyer helped secure a gymnastics scholarship at Florida for Moore's girlfriend.

No question that college coaches push the limits when it comes to recruiting. I'm dating myself a little here, but does anybody else remember Billy Donovan showing up in Raleigh just so he could wave across the street to Shavlik Randolph? Or Matt Doherty getting Michael Jordan to wear a "Shav Country" t-shirt?

Will it ever change? Probably not until those in charge - university presidents - draw the line and say it's ridiculous for their charges to pursue players this way. Of course, since those coaches are often the highest-paid employees in their respective states, don't look for this to happen anytime soon.

Here is a link only for documented misdeeds and transgressions of Florida coach Urban Meyer:

What will never change is for certain "pundits" and fans of other schools whose coaches can't recruit to try to make a mountain out of every molehill that pops up.

It is well known by now that the gymnast contacted the UF gymnastic coach a year before UF ever talked to Moore. She was told that if her rehab went well, she would have a spot on the UF gymnastics team. Sorry, dead end story.

Secondly, who says Meyer called Moore and handed the phone to Tebow? Do you know factually that Moore did not call Tebow; or that when Meyer was talking to him Moore did not ask to talk to Tebow? Perfectly legal, even in the arcane world of NCAA recruiting.

Grow up and tend your own gardens folks.
