Good Time For a Roadtrip
So, two big games a few miles apart tonight in Prince George's: Gonzaga at DeMatha and Laurel at Eleanor Roosevelt. DeMatha is the only team to beat the top-ranked Eagles, while Roosevelt should/could threaten second-ranked Laurel's undefeated run through the Prince George's 4A.
I, of course, am getting ready to hit the road and trek down I-95 past Fredericksburg to see one of the area's top players, sophomore Josh Hairston. Courtland's 6-8 forward was averaging 20-plus points and 11 rebounds per game when I spoke to Courtland Coach J.T. Nino recently. He already holds scholarship offers from Georgetown, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Ohio State.
Virginia Coach Dave Leitao and Maryland assistant Chuck Driesell saw Hairston in a Christmas tournament. Ohio State Coach Thad Matta and Georgetown assistant Robert Burke also have come to a Courtland game and Virginia Tech Coach Seth Greenberg took in a recent practice.
Duke and North Carolina have recently inquired about Hairston, as have Southern Cal and UCLA, Nino said
"He's definitely gotten adjusted to" the attention, Nino said. "Last year when somebody came to the gym, he got real anxious and got caught up in it. This year, he's adjusted and knows he has to play his best whether somebody is in the gym or nobody is in the gym."
