Terps Land Juco Guard With Spotty Past

As anticipated, junior college guard Tyree Evans is set to sign with Maryland today. Evans is considered a top talent whose off-court issues have hounded him the past few years. Coming out of high school in Richmond and prep school in Massachusetts, he originally committed to Cincinnati before the scholarship offer was rescinded when he was charged with statutory rape, though he later plead guilty to lesser charges. He reportedly was kicked off the team at his first junior college and spent this past season at Motlow State Community College in Lynchburg, Tenn. He's considered a top scorer, but it will be interesting to see how he fits in on a guard-heavy team.

Another scholar-athlete for Gary! Does he come with a 1-800 number for his bail bondsman? "Oh, we've investigated him, and we're confident that he's straightened his life out." TRANSLATION: "He can put the ball in the hole."

You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Coach Williams got a ring with players who did not graduate (actually graduation is not a priority of Williams. And this time he intends to win games with troubled players, in addition to players with degrees from diploma mills. This is the Real Williams, the one who get a pass from his admirers at Wapo.
