Maryland About to Land Former Penn State Tackle?

Former Gwynn Park All-Met lineman Phil Taylor was kicked off the team at Penn State for unspecified reasons. He had been suspended from summer school for his role in an altercation and received one year probation. Taylor, who has two years of eligibility and a redshirt season remaining, could find a new home soon. Word is that Maryland and Tennessee are interested and could be the destination for the big defensive tackle who had 6 ½ tackles and three sacks last season.

Penn State, where DC talent goes to wither away.

If the kid got kicked out of State Penn, then he must have done something REALLY wrong.

If I recall, he was with Logan-El that day he announced for UPS on national t.v. and embarrased Friedgen. No thanks.

Taylor has no place in College Park. We have plenty of D Lineman who can play AND stay out of trouble. He should go to Tennessee. He would fit in well with all the troublemakers and arrestees Fat Phil has running around Knoxville.

We should welcome him with open arms. It is a no lose situation. You give him a chance and if he screws up he walks. We need all the goodwill we can get. Go Terps

Yeah right no thanks I don't want PSU's throwaways. Go to Towson State with your boy and be ready to flip my burger in three years loser.

University of Maryland DOES NOT WANT Phil Taylor - let him go to the Vols - Maryland does not want any P.G. County kids - too much of an academic risk - The Terps especially do not want any kids from Eleanor Roosevelt H.S.

these people don't speak for Maryland. Why wouldn't we want him? If it is nothing legal and he can transfer to Maryland and be productive on the field and in the classroom what is wrong with that?

Why not give the kid a second chance. If he messes up he is gone, but there is no harm in trying

JT - He had multiple "second chances", I don't doubt he would help on the field but he obviously has major issues and can't stay out of trouble.

I understand that young kids will make mistakes but when you have a full ride and chance to get to the NFL and you keep messing up...what does that say about his critical thinking skills. Some kids are just bad apples and until he takes "personal responsibility" and grows up he doesn't deserve to play D1 ball and get a free education. It's not a right to play in front of's an honor.

Hey Mike - you're obviously not a MD fan - which team do you root for?

Friedgen has proven in the past he doesn't just take anyone. He and his staff must think the kid is not as bad as what's perceived and therefore are willing to accept him into the program. The Fridge's track record thus far speaks for itself so put your trust in him and give the kid a chance (if he does end up at MD).

Logan-El and Baker committed to play for the United Parcel Service? I had no idea.

Posted by: PSUGrad | July 31, 2008 12:03 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, Maryland couldn't use that talent. Fridge will take anyone now that he was exposed for only winning with Vanderlinden's recruits.

Posted by: RJ | July 31, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

If Penn State doesn't want him, why would anyone else? Believe me, he's got problems if Joe Pa is going to turn him loose.

Let Gary deal with the problems. Keep the football team clean.

Vanderlinden is the #1 reason for the turn around at PSU w/ LJ SR a close second. They are by far the best coaches on the staff.

Maryland wanting PSU's scraps. Too funny.

That's Maryland, taking out Penn State's trash.

Good luck Terps, you're going to need all the help you can get.

P.S. - Don't let that big bad football team to the north scare you.

Phil is not a bad kid just wrong place wrong time and he should go to Maryland or any other D1 school because he has the talent and the potential. I know Phil, he was just around bad influences at Penn State

Hey, PSU Grad, it was a joke, you know like when have of your players say they're announcing for the "University of Penn State", like Dwayne, oh I mean, Derrick Williams? Guess that one flew over. You and JoePa both.
