Big Money Spent on Recruiting

Wow. It is simply amazing how much money college athletic programs spend recruiting players. This terrific report in the Chronicle of Higher Education notes that no university with a major football program saw a bigger percentage boost than Maryland, which spent more than $900,000 on recruiting in 2007. The Terps, though, have a ways to go if they want to catch No. 1 Tennessee, which spent a little more than $2 million in 2006-07 on recruiting. Duke was ninth, Virginia 15th at $1.1 million.

You think those private planes, helicopters and fancy meals are cheap? Wonder if Rutgers found a way to not include Greg Schiano's helicopter rides...

Maryland, football and baketball recruiting is in terrible shape. If I was high school recruit, I would never - ever consider Maryland.

Weird how Penn State is able to pluck prime football recruits from Maryland with less than 75% of the recruiting budget of the Terps. Fridge better ask for more money to try to keep Maryland recruits from leaving the state. Or, it could be that the facilities at the other schools are much better than Maryland's (i.e., better stadiums, academic support, training table, etc.).
