James Wood's Lloyd Has the Leg

From correspondent Matthew Stanmyre:

James Wood senior kicker Andrew Lloyd does not have any division I-A scholarship offers, but Colonels Coach Mike Bolin said that will almost certainly change in the coming months.

Lloyd is ranked the No. 16 overall kicker in the Class of 2009 on by kicking guru Chris Sailer. Bolin said Louisiana State, Michigan State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech are the schools recruiting Lloyd with the most fervor.

Recruiters from Michigan State, Notre Dame and Maryland have stopped by James Wood, located an hour and a half west of the District in Winchester, Va., to watch him kick. Lloyd has visited Virginia Tech, where he worked out in front of Coach Frank Beamer, who, according to Bolin, "was impressed."

Lloyd burst onto the recruiting scene this summer after attending a kicking camp at LSU, where Bolin said Lloyd won the camp's kicking competition by making all 16 of his field goal attempts from various spots on the field. Bolin added that Lloyd has made field goals in practice from 60 yards.

"He's definitely got the leg," Bolin said.

Lloyd has made only 4 of 10 field goal attempts this season, but two of his misses were from beyond 53 yards and two more were blocked. He has made all 25 of his extra-point attempts, and 75 percent of his kickoffs have been touchbacks.

Lloyd has added to his appeal with his punting ability. He is averaging 42 yards per punt, good enough, Bolin said, to punt in college.

"It's a matter of time" before Lloyd earns a scholarship, Bolin said. Bolin added that most major colleges wait until late in the recruiting process to offer scholarships to kickers, preferring to wait and see which recruits they can land at other positions.

Andrew Lloyd should sign with LSU - and not even consider the University of Maryland

You make a statement but offer no explanation why.

I watched the UMD kicker yesterday who really looked bad on a few kicks. Were you exercising some sarcasm perhaps?

I have seen Lloyd kick and he has a great leg with great form and control. Does well under pressure, too. He is a true D1 scholarship caliber kicker.

Andrew should def sign with LSU. He is an absolute amazing kicker with a bunch of potential. His field goal stats are very misleading because he has hit from 60 plus before in Wood's practices.
