Austin Prefers the Mountains
Walking into Dunbar's postgame media availability following its 20-19 victory over Fort Hill in the Maryland 1A final on Saturday, the first person I bumped into was Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin.
Franklin and offensive line coach Tom Brattan were at Dunbar at 7 a.m. in an attempt to make an impression on Dunbar star running back Tavon Austin -- which apparently they did. That said, Austin later said that West Virginia is his favorite college as he prepares to take his official visits to colleges.
Austin said he plans official visits to Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina and Michigan.
"I'm trying to figure out which coach, which team is best for me," Austin said. "West Virginia is my favorite right now. West Virginia and Michigan have the same offense, but when I stepped on West Virginia's campus it was love up there, just like Dunbar."
Austin said he took notice of Maryland's coaches being at Dunbar around sunrise -- just like he did when Ralph Friedgen and company rode on a helicopter to watch the Poets play during the regular season.
"I like Coach Franklin a lot but when you know how you go somewhere and get a feeling about somewhere?" Austin said. "I had a good feeling about West Virginia."
Austin said he won't make his choice until the first day of the beginning of the letter-of-intent signing period on Feb. 4.
