Locksley to New Mexico; Will Local Players Follow?

Sorry, been a busy morning. I've got some good stuff, including Dunbar-Baltimore star Tavon Austin talking about his decision-making process - I'll post it later this afternoon, but here's a quick hint: Maryland made an impression with its efforts Saturday but West Virginia is his favorite school right now.

That said, here's a story that no doubt will reverberate across the local football recruiting landscape: former Maryland assistant Mike Locksley is leaving his post as the offensive coordinator at Illinois to become the head coach at New Mexico. Locksley has done a terrific job getting Washington-area players to go to Illinois and I'm sure he'll make the effort to get them to Albuquerque. That said, will local kids want to travel to the desert southwest? (I'm guessing they will.) And will Illinois still get some of the D.C. area's top players to Champaign?

No and No. I wouldn't be surprised to see Locksley make inroads in California but New Mexico is not in a big conference and is too far from D.C.

As for Ron Zook, he just lost his D.C. pipeline. He better start hitting Chicago harder.

I dont see the highly recruited local kids going to New Mexico. As far as Illinois goes, i think Zook is done he is a great recruiter but no that good a coach. I am just sorry for the local kids Locksley recruited who are now left behind in Illinois. What does he tell their parents?

Hey DC Kids! Welcome to the 505. The weather is great and we can't wait to see you play. We are in the same conference that is about to take it to 'Bama and we beat the PAC 10 at every turn this year.

Can't wait to hear what Austin thought of his MD visit.

i think Locksley will actually have a better chance getting DC players to NM than he did to Illinois. NM is a bit more exotic sounding than...ugh...Champaign. one visit out there and he'll hook 'em. & i'm speaking as a DC area guy who gladly fled the Md. area to attend NM Tech, just 80 or so miles down the road from UNM
