Charter School Forward Holds Offers

Colleague Alan Goldenbach, who knows everything charter-school related, filed this dispatch:

After leading Cesar Chavez to its second Washington Charter Schools Athletic Association title in three seasons, senior forward Markee Mazyck is ready to give college recruiting his full attention.

According to Chavez Coach Darryl Singleton, the 6-4 Mazyck holds offers from Niagara and Mount St. Mary's, and might get some others after the college season ends. Singleton said Mazyck showed an improved mid-range jumpshot this season, which should help him prove his worth as a college shooting guard. Basketball's late signing period starts April 15.

Mazyck is the younger brother of Deon Saunders, a 2000 All-Met from Spingarn, who led the Green Wave to the City Title and the Post's No. 1 ranking his senior season. Mazyck's younger brother, Larry, played alongside him at Chavez this season, though Larry's future might best lie in a different sport. Larry Mazyck is a 6-foot-7, 330-pound sophomore, and Singleton readily acknowledged he has ideal size for an offensive lineman.

"There's a lot of people who want him to play" football, Singleton said. "He'll have some interest."
