Springbrook Forward Has Good Timing
Springbrook forward Jamal Olasewere didn't see who was in the crowd last night at Comcast Center, when he scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds before fouling out in an eventual 74-69 double-overtime victory over Walbrook of Baltimore in a Maryland 4A semifinal.
And while Georgetown Coach John Thompson III was probably in attendance to get another look at Walbrook standout junior forward Roscoe Smith, Olasewere said he has heard recently from Georgetown's coaches and was happy to have the opportunity to impress.
"He was there?" Olasewere said. "I didn't see him. Thank God he was."
Listed at 6-6 (he's probably closer to 6-4), I made the observation during last night's game that Olasewere reminded me of another player who excelled in College Park: Lonny Baxter. Undersized at his position, you always knew what Baxter was going to do (go right, use the glass) but you still couldn't stop him. Ditto Olasewere, who continually bruned Walbrook's 2-3 sagging zone defense from the short corner on the right side.
Olasewere said he has scholarship offers from Mount St. Mary's, Quinnipiac and UMBC, while Georgetown and Villanova have made late inquiries. He has yet to make any college visits.
"I'm not really worried about it," Olasewere said. "Right now, I just want to one the big one" Saturday night against Wise in the Maryland 4A final.
