Carroll Lineman Picks Maryland
Maryland picked up another local recruit Tuesday, with Carroll lineman Nate Clarke pledging to play for the Terrapins. Clarke, 6 feet 5 and 285 pounds, also had a scholarship offer from Kansas State. Several other schools wanted to see film of his first few games this season before deciding whether to offer a scholarship. Last season was Clarke's first as a starter and he lost about 15 pounds this past offseason.
"He talked with [assistant coach James] Franklin, [Coach Ralph] Friedgen and [assistant coach Dave] Sollazzo," Carroll Coach Rick Houchens said. "They're going to use him as a defensive tackle. He doesn't care which side of the ball he plays on. He's going to be a good one. He can run well for a big guy.
"I'm excited for him. They need linemen. That's one of the biggest voids they're trying to fill so it's an opportunity for him to compete early."
Houchens said that defensive end-outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu -- who holds 16 scholarship offers -- also has Maryland among his top choices.
Attaochu, 6 feet 3 and 224 pounds, "really likes Illinois, Virginia and also Maryland," Houchens said. Illinois could have an advantage, however, as another former player of Houchens, Will Davis, starred at the same position at Illinois and was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals. Attaochu also has had a productive offseason, gaining more than 30 pounds.
"There's a little bit of a connection," Houchens said. "Right now, he's just kind of riding it out. I know he's going to have more opportunities coming."

Maryland has always had in its pedigree an uncanny way of finding undiscovered or un- sought after talent and developing it. I have seen this guy play and play he can on both sides of the ball and has very good footwork for a big guy. After the Fridge gets a hold of him for technique, things ought to make a significant uptick in improvement.

He's also a 4 star recruit and the #11 ranked H.S. guard in the country.

1st, let's clarify it's Archbishop Carroll in NE, DC and not one of the many Carrol schools in the area.
I think MD has actually had a number of decent players, but it does not seem like their program is focused or committed to maximizing it's talent. MD has a number of 3-5th round players that make it in the league and have decent careers. A number of OL are coveted free agents, but they never seem to make it over the hump under Friedgen to be an elite talent team. the RB they have now is nice. Yet, he wasted a year siting behind Ray Lewis's brother that was not that good. The WR drafted last year actually has 7th pick talent, but he did not actually show that at MD. I think it reflects on Friedgen's team and coaching as inconsistent.

Sorry hclark1 but tobacco rd is not football country. Although your school did produce the greatest linebacker ever in Lawrence Taylor the only other football player that comes to mind is Peppers. Stick with Basketball Lacrosse and baseball in regards to bragging. Your football team is about the same as Duke.

Ged, i feel duty bound to add a name...John Bunting...a classmate of mine at Springbrook...two-year starter at linebacker for UNC...and 11 seasons for Philly. he got a Super Bowl ring as a coach with the Rams and was UNC's head coach until recently. i think he measures up.
