Out at Penn State, Top CB Givens Heading to Rutgers?
Highly recruited cornerback Darrell Givens is looking for a new college to play for this fall, and he could have a decision later Tuesday after a trip to Rutgers.
Givens, who graduated from Lackey this past spring, signed a letter-of-intent to play for Penn State in February. He had orally committed to Ohio State before switching his college choice to the Nittany Lions. At 6 feet 1 and 190 pounds, Givens was among the most sought-after players in the Washington area last year.
But late last week, with "his bags packed and ready to go," according to Lackey Coach Doug Lamb, Givens got a phone call from Penn State officials saying that he had been denied admission to the school. Givens had spent the summer retaking an English course to improve his core grade-point average and become academically eligible to play as a freshman.
"He qualified for the NCAA but not for Penn State's standards," Lamb said. "They gave him the option of going to prep school and then going to Penn State, or releasing him from his [national letter-of-intent] and going somewhere else. He chose to go somewhere else."
Lamb said that Givens limited his next choice to colleges with head coaches and recruiters whom he liked earlier in the recruiting process. North Carolina, Miami and South Carolina are in the mix. It certainly doesn't hurt that the Tar Heels added former Friendly High assistant Marcus Berry to their staff as director of player personnel last spring; Givens played at Friendly before transferring to Lackey. Lamb said that he spoke with Maryland assistant Charles Bankins, but that Givens was not interested in the Terrapins, Virginia or Virginia Tech.
One other school that Givens wanted to know more about was Rutgers; Lamb spoke to me as he was driving to pick up Givens and travel to Piscataway, N.J., to meet with Coach Greg Schiano and his staff.
"He might have a decision later today," Lamb said, noting that the Scarlet Knights were among Givens's top choices before he picked Penn State.
