Another DeMatha DB set for college
Add one more to the list of DeMatha defensive backs who are bound to play major-college football. Junior cornerback Jordan Lomax has committed to play for Virginia.
"He cut it off early," Stags Coach Bill McGregor said. "He has scholarship offers to Stanford, Maryland and Louisville. But he went down on a visit to Virginia and really liked [first-year] Coach [Mike] London. Shawn Moore is down there and Shawn's son, Michael, is at DeMatha, so we've known him for a while and [assistant] coach [Anthony] Poindexter."
Michael Moore, a sophomore, is expected to start at defensive end this upcoming season.
McGregor expects that at least two other members of next fall's secondary will play big-time college football. Michael Williams, the younger brother of former Maryland and current Minnesota Vikings safety Madieu Williams, holds an offer from Maryland and McGregor expects Virginia to soon join the Terrapins. Ta'Von Bailey does not yet hold any offers, McGregor said, though he expects that will soon change.
"They're all the same type of kid - corners who can run and are pretty athletic," McGregor said. "I think they're all going to get bigger and stronger. I would compare them to Rodney McLeod (a DeMatha alum now at Virginia) - he probably isn't the most impressive kid in the world physically but it's the way he plays, how tough he is, how physical he is. Then you watch them on film and they're fast and quick and make plays."
DeMatha's current senior class of defensive backs includes Lorenzo Waters (Rutgers), Michael Coley (California), Jeff Knox (Pittsburgh) and Kyrrel Latimer (Virginia).
As for Virginia, McGregor noted the Cavaliers' strong connections to the Washington area. London is well regarded by many Washington-area coaches, while Poindexter had mined the region for many prospects before Moore joined the Cavaliers' staff this offseason after being an assistant coach at St. Albans.
"We've had a great relationship with Virginia," McGregor said. "Coach Poindexter has been coming through forever, we know Dex really well. Mike London, I've known since he was an assistant coach at Richmond, that goes back 15 years maybe. I've known Mike forever. And I have a great relationship with Shawn. I knew Shawn before we even talked about Michael coming to DeMatha."
