Inside the recruiting of St. John's DL Kevin McReynolds
In case anyone missed it, I've got a story in today's paper about how St. John's DL Kevin McReynolds is permitting his Facebook friends and Twitter followers some inside looks at the recruiting process, sort of a glance at a 17-year-old's diary.
It was amazing to see how some top recruits in football and basketball use the social networking sites. Some limit their posts to personal topics and some interact with fans halfway across the country, which struck me as so bizarre. McReynolds, for instance, has a huge following of Arkansas fans, several of whom like to post "wps!" (short for woo pig sooey, I learned) of his Facebook page. He has more than 3,000 followers. All-Met basketball player of the year Quinn Cook estimated than one-third of his Facebook friends are random college basketball fans he has never met.
Can you imagine being a teenager and being inundated by folks you don't know like this?
I think that McNamara DB Nico Law said it best: "I try to ignore [fans] sometimes. If you accept the wrong person, they fill up your inbox. It's like you have personal stalkers that you don't want."
