Landon F Darion Atkins picks Virginia

Landon forward Darion Atkins committed to play for Virginia on Friday morning, a sort-of present for his 18th birthday.

Atkins, a 6-foot-8 senior who averaged 10.2 points last season, had taken an official visit to Virginia earlier this month then took an official visit to Notre Dame this past weekend. After returning, though, he was torn between the two schools and made another trip to Virginia earlier this week.

"I felt like Virginia was the best fit for me, it was a gut feeling," Atkins said. "Going down and watching the guys work out and their intensity and how hard they work [stood out]. And so did Coach [Tony] Bennett and his story and what he did to get to the NBA."

Said Landon Coach Andy Luther: "It's been a good, but difficult, decision to make. I think he's done a great job of handling the right variables in all of this. He did more analysis of this than most kids do in the college process. As a college counselor, I'm proud of him."

Great pick up for Tony, and it makes the third time he's beat out Mike Brey for a recruit in this class.

Wow, Bennett can recruit! These guys aren't Burger Boys, but they'll be a solid foundation for ACC play.
