T.C. Williams' Jay Whitmire commits to Virginia
T.C. Williams' highly recruited lineman Jay Whitmire verbally committed to Virginia on Sunday night after months of weighing offers from over a dozen division I schools.
Whitmire, an All-Met who missed five games this season with an ankle sprain suffered before the season, turned down offers from Maryland, Notre Dame, Penn State, Boston College, West Virginia and North Carolina, among others. Of those schools, the 6-foot-7, 300-pound lineman was most interested in Virginia, North Carolina, Duke and Notre Dame. Whitmire committed to Virginia after Coach Mike London and assistant coach Anthony Poindexter paid the family a visit on Sunday.
Whitmire, who also plays on the defensive line, finished with 24 tackles, four sacks and eight quarterback hurries in five games. The Titans finished 6-4, narrowly missing the playoffs but notching their first winning season since 1995.
