Cyrus Kouandjio: Waiting to sign, still considering Auburn, Alabama and New Mexico

By James Wagner

On Thursday afternoon, DeMatha All-Met offensive lineman Cyrus Kouandjio met with his coach, Bill McGregor, to chat about what had been weighing heavily on him over the past 24 hours.

On Wednesday, Kouandjio said on ESPNU that he would attend Auburn to play football. But even as he made that announcement, Kouandjio said he felt nervous and unsure about his decision, calling it "buyer's remorse."

Widely considered one of the nation's top prospects, Kouandjio said he won't sign his national letter of intent for the time being for that reason.

"I just want to wait a little while because if something comes up or something comes down, you never know," he said, standing in the main entrance of the Hyattsville school.

He said he remains committed to Auburn but is also considering Alabama and New Mexico.

When asked why he verbally committed to Auburn on television if he was having doubts, Kouandjio said, "It was the moment. Auburn just rolled out my tongue. ... My heart told me to go Auburn and it just rolled out of my tongue. And my brain is starting to kick in right now and I'm trying to have them agree right now. That's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to have my brain and my heart agree."

Part of his internal struggle is the fact his older brother Arie, another DeMatha All-Met lineman, is a freshman at Alabama.

"My whole family, including my brother, wants me to go to Alabama," Cyrus Kouandjio said. "My brother called me like, 'Brah, what are you doing?'"

Cyrus Kouandjio said his brother holds "a lot" of sway over his college choice. "That's one thing that's tough about it because he wants me to go down to Alabama a lot," he said.

Kouandjio said he has no timetable for his decision, saying it could take up to two days at most to make up his mind after he consults more with his family, pastor and some friends.

His father has reportedly said that Iowa was still being considered, but Kouandjio nixed that idea Thursday afternoon.

"I went down there and I love the football team and the coaches and everything," he said. "But the lifestyle down there, I don't think its for me. I don't think I'd be able to thrive those three years. I don't think so."

Somewhat surprisingly, New Mexico, which finished 1-11 this past fall, remains a finalist in his decision.

"I have a lot of respect for Coach [Mike] Locksley, a lot of respect," Kouandjio said, holding a New Mexico hat in his hand, adding it was only because he liked the colors.

Kouandjio said he spoke Thursday with Auburn Coach Gene Chizik and Alabama Coach Nick Saban. But he reiterated that this decision rests solely on him.

"There's not much they can say," he said. "It's all about my heart and my mind right now."

I hope this young man or someone in his family calls the NCAA and request information on the ongoing NCAA investigation into the Auburn football program. It's a fact that Auburn is being investigated again and the outcome doesn't look good for the Tigers. Be smart and just call....

Too good for Iowa, eh? Good riddance!

Posted by: ozpunk | February 3, 2011 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Not only is Auburn not being investigated (that is a fact), Alabama is on probation and has been three times in this century, a Thumbnail away from the death penalty once they investigate the Gadsden doings in 2008. Do you really think Auburn;s assistants like Malzahn and more notably line coach grimes would turn down Texas two weeks ago if Auburn was going down? Of course not. The problem with people giving comments like the first one here is they are usually based on biased or just plain bad information. Auburn is 8-3 head to head, has one more undefeated season (2-1) and one more SEC championship (2-1) in the 21st century and the one not on probation, not going on probation no matter what you hear and about three years (if that long) from running Saban out of the state...

Don't really care about athletes receiving scholarships and bailing after a couple of years.

"...only because he liked the colors." What a box of rocks.

I see we have an auburn fan who like his coaches like to spread lies. All one has to do is call the NCAA or ANY newspaper in Alabama (AL.Com) and they will tell you about the NCAA investigation that is ongoing against Auburn football. It's just a matter of time before the hammer falls again on the Auburn football program. Please call and find our yourself

Posted by: racer50 | February 3, 2011 5:48 PM | Report abuse

I believe Tim500 better get all his facts right. The FBI is still investigating the Colonial Bank mess and it may include pay for play issues and illegal home loans. Also the NCAA onvestigation is still going on.The truth will come out. By the way, it took Auburn 52 years to win a national title since 1958 and they were on probation then. Typical barner poster like Tim Bo above. It may be several years down the road, but the truth will finally come out about the Cam Newton issue in 2010 also.

Posted by: pms71 | February 3, 2011 5:56 PM | Report abuse

Racer50 and pms71 are just regurgitating the same tired worn out message board generated fiction that they've been fed for months.

I'd love for you to explain how Colonial Bank, which ceased to exist in August 15, 2009, could possibly have anything to do with Cam Newton's recruitment, considering Auburn wasn't even recruiting Cam at that time. There are articles from September of 2009 where Cam doesn't even mention Auburn as an option for his destination as proof of these FACTS.

These are the types of people that represent the Alabama fan base, they will spread lies and fiction generated from these wild conspiracy theories that they use to justify how Auburn could have beaten them on the field and in recruiting in this state.

The truth has already come out regarding Cam when the NCAA commented not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR times stating that there was no evidence whatsoever of Cam Newton or anyone in his family receiving any illegal benefit whatsoever in his recruitment. No one is making excuses for the discussions his father apparently had with Mississippi State, but those discussions have NOTHING to do with Auburn University.

Now as for your little history lesson, the fact of the matter is that Auburn is not under NCAA investigation, and is not currently on probation. A claim that can not be made by Alabama. Alabama is currently on probation for Failure to Monitor, a major NCAA infraction, and they were on that probation in 2009 when they won the national championship.

Auburn football hasn't received any sort of major infraction reprimand from the NCAA since 1993, approximately 18 years ago, before the majority of these athletes were even born.

You can continue spewing the fiction and lies aimed at denigrating Auburn University if you like, but know that you are the ones lying about a situation that you have ZERO personal knowledge about. You are passing on third or fourth hand accounts that are patently false, and do not stand up to the most basic facts, like the date Colonial Bank shut down.

Again... All one has to do is call the NCAA offices (317/917-6222) or you can call the Birmingham News, Mobile Press Register and find out for yourself. I'm a person who only wants this family to have all the information the need to make the right choice. The NCAA has some very serious issues with the way Auburn runs their football program and the investigation into those concerns is ongoing.. Please call

Posted by: racer50 | February 3, 2011 6:21 PM | Report abuse

I have a better idea racer50 and pms71...why don't you share a single FACT with Post readers about the so-called investigations you and other delusional bammers lie, mislead and spread half-truths about ad nauseum in your pathetic efforts to undermine Auburn -- the state school whose football program hasn't been on NCAA probation since 1994, while bammer hasn't been OFF probation since 1995. Call the NCAA? They won't comment on any matter they have investigated (Cam was cleared) until the statute of limitations for "the possibility of additional evidence being uncovered" has run out. That's four more years that the "investigation will be left open". But it in no way means Auburn is under investigation. Colonial Bank? FBI? Really? Even 90% of the bammers have abandoned that non-sense. There's a better chance the Colonial probe will cure cancer or implicate another bammer (remember bammer Bernie Maddof?) than the Auburn football program. Just give us one fact! Please? One? Here are a few for you: 7 of 9; 8 of 11; and 17 to 13 the last thirty years. Final fact: 28-27. News flash: Bahr is dead. Deal with it.

Posted by: fiveputt | February 3, 2011 6:28 PM | Report abuse

There is no investigation of Auburn by the NCAA, FBI or the CIA. All of it has been manufactured by idiots trying to spread rumors because they've had their tails handed to them. It's that simple. The NCAA was investigating Miss St. Maybe they still are. It was a Miss St. former player and supporter who has been disaccoiated from that school on orders of the NCAA.

Everything else is a fiction of silliness strung out by people with nothing better to do that spread a tall tale. Calling the "Birmingham News, Mobile Press Register and find out for yourself" is be a fine thing to do. They will tell you the same thing because if there was an investigation, it would be on their pages and it's not.

Take time and read this post by 'fiveputt' he represents your typical Auburn fan. It's fans like 'fiveputt' that give Auburn University the bad name it has amoung fans of other SEC schools. Again... the NCAA or any newspaper in the state of Alabama will confirm the NCAA investigation into Auburn. It's good to have all the facts before one makes such an important decision.

Posted by: racer50 | February 3, 2011 6:38 PM | Report abuse

The truth will come out 82banutiger, but you can't handle the truth, can you ?? By
the way, what makes you think I'm an Alabama or SEC fan? You know about all the hanky panky regarding the Colonial bank mess. I hope they put all the guilty parties in jail because as a tax payer its taking money out of my pocket and every other tax payer that pays federal taxes. Like I commented earlier, the truth will come out about the Cam Newton down the road. Also, didn't Charles Barkley admit he was paid to go to Auburn to play basketball several months ago ?? I think you better get your facts right.

It's comical how Sooo many of you think Auburn is being investigated. Name ONE source. Don't give me AL.com garbage. If your source say "may be under investigation", you haven't a leg to stand on. You are Joe Shaud. Every school MAY be under investigation. With the Cam Newton ordeal, Auburn was NEVER mentioned. Do you really think the NCAA would have reinstated him if they were going to "drop the hammer" on them. That casts a worse light on them then the one already shining on them. If the hammer was to inevitably fall, wouldn't high profile Assustants like Malzone jump ship (like Pete Carroll)? I'm still waiting for ANY evidence that Incriminates Auburn. Hell, Sports Illustrated was aware of the person Cam called saying "the money was too much" and chose nit run it because the only "Source" was Mrs. Mullen(you need 2, AND they can't have a conflict of interest,I.e. Being the wife of the Man that made formentioned allegations. I think UAT gives the SEC a bad name. If SMU had never got the Death Penalty, UAT would have received it(the NCAA has been vocal about not resorting to the Death Penalty again). No matter how made you UAT fans get, Auburn is still the 2010 National Champ and the best team in the State of Alabama in this Century. Btw. What do maggotts and uat fans have in common? They can both live off of a dead bear for years.

So ... uh, just interested in the answer people are getting from calling "any newspaper in Alabama" for confirmation of this alleged investigation against Auburn.

Why would newspapers know? Further, why wouldn't it be reported.

The truth is they don't know. You can call the Press-Register and 251-219-5669 and they will tell you that they know of no investigation. Same goes for the Huntsville Times and Birmingham News.

Bammer fantasies and logical fallacies are pretty easy to refute. They'll try to make a stand with "just call xxx," assuming you won't follow through. Don't let yourself be outsmarted by a stupid hillbilly from Alabama. The truth is out there. Just call the newspaper mentioned and they'll tell you "no knowledge of any investigation." Why? Because there isn't one.

Thank you JDB1... It's sad that Auburn fans can't come clean about the current NCAA investigation into their program. All I'm trying to do is shine a little light on the lies that they are telling these recruits. It's not fair to good kids like Cyrus to not tell him the truth about the problems they are facing with the NCAA. He's a good kid that comes from a good family and they deserve the truth. Auburn football could very well be out of business this time next year.

Just about everyone of Auburns violations is regarding paying players. Several of those boosters arev still associated with the program. Alabama is no saint, in fact very far from it, but Auburn fans trying to play a finger pointing game is a joke.

You know, nothing says "unedumacated bammer" like an all caps rant.

Bastion of credibility there.

Only one of these programs has been described by the NCAA as "looking down the barrel of a gun" and it isn't Auburn. Oh yea, and what did bammer do for the NCAA when that happened? They went right back on probation.

I do not frankly care what school this kid picks... but seeing New Mexico on his short list, and on so many other top Maryland prospects this year really makes me wonder if Maryland should not have given a much harder look at that coach during their search... You do realize that every player is on a year to year scholarship. Further, up until this year nothing banned oversigning. Even further, the rule was enacted because of Houston nutt. At least get your facts right. Oh and it's the university of alabama. Now can you please provide some evidence that anyone is investigating the university of Alabama? And they have 16 teams on probabation and their football team is the most penalized athletic unit in college football over the last 2 decades. 15 years of probation for this repeat offender should be embarassing to Bama fans. Apparently nothing embarasses them.
