Zorn Bothered by Lack of Effort in Loss

Usually upbeat and animated, Coach Jim Zorn seemed perturbed Friday while addressing the media at Redskins Park.

Losing, 23-0, in a preseason opener will do that to a coach - especially if many young players fail to display enough effort. It would have been unrealistic for Zorn to expect a polished performance in the Redskins' first game, and being shut out while giving up 500 total net yards also dampened his mood.

It was the lack of effort Zorn observed, however, that really irked him.

"Not scoring points, not sustaining drives, it's irritating," Zorn said. "I've got to call a better game and I've got to put our guys in a position to score. That's No. 1 from my standpoint. And then No. 2, I think our young guys" must figure out how things work in the NFL.

Many of the young players competing to make the 53-man opening-day roster approached Thursday's game as if they had it all figured out. "They've watched this game [NFL football] all their lives, they've finally got a chance to go out there and play it, and [they] think it's going to be just like it was before.

"And it's not just like it was before. It is intense. It is exact. And it is passionate. And it is emotional. I felt like some of the young guys saw some of our veterans, who played great, [and] saw they're going to have to pick things up. And we played guys, quite honestly, that need to improve. They need to play better in the coming weeks."

Looking at the roster in the offseason, I figured the Redskins could have depth concerns with many units unless unproven players improved quickly. Again, it appears Zorn and J Reid are on the same page.

"The backups need to be better. Some of the guys need to be better," he said. "Some of it was just age; just some of the young guys out there getting the feel for the NFL. You could see hesitation. You could see us playing soft. ... You've got to have a plan when you're out there."
On a positive note for the Redskins, guard Chad Rinehart was effective as part of the first-team offensive line in place of right guard Randy Thomas. On the other side, however, second-year cornerback Justin Tryon was repeatedly beaten in coverage.

Veteran cornerback Shawn Springs, who excelled at playing in the slot, left in free agency after the 2008 season. With several teams regularly using three- and four-receiver sets, covering receivers well in the slot is a priority for defenses. The Ravens picked on Tryon when he was in the game as a nickel corner, and he did not fare well in his first audition for the job.

"He got a lot of attention," Zorn said. "In a nickel position, there's a lot of strain. He was probably [playing] a little soft. He's going to learn some things from this football game. He felt his way. I'm not down on him. They picked on him and I think he'll rise up. I think he's a good player."

Of course, it was only the first preseason game. The season opener against the New York Giants at Giants Stadium is scheduled Sept. 13, so Zorn and his coaching staff still have plenty of time to teach the youngsters.

"It was a first test," Zorn said. "It was a difficult test for some of these guys. Some failed, some came through with flying colors and then some now need to rise up. I would say Justin just figured he played a little soft. He played a little tentative. He'll come through."

zorn is not an NFL head-coach. He just isn't. Sorry to break it to you.

Zorn must actually be LaCanfora in disguise. How could he be disappointed, it's only preseason, it means nothing, all indications as to the general crappiness of the players picked by this FO in camp, scrimmage, preseason, it all means nothing, in fact, it must mean our players are really good, because after all it's only preseason, and if you suck then, you must be incredible in the regular season. Why, look at the last half of last season, which wasn't the preseason, and actually counted, why, look at the last ten years, we've done nothing but own, so all you haters out there stop all the doomsaying, we're super bowl bound. Now go buy your tickets and parking spots and 10 dollar beers and shut up.

You didn't watch the game. Energy and enthusiasm were the huge difference btwn those two teams. Its like the Skins depth doesn't realize they are competing for jobs. That means there is a pervasive attitude of self-satisfaction.

And you're not my psychologist. My psychologist has a keen eye for football ... and she actually watches the games too.

Orakapo looked good but that "performance" was pathetic. I know its only preseason, but the individual effort was very poor. It's going to be a long season

I agree with a few of the posts above, Zorn doesn't exactly scream leadership and I want to run through a wall for you... Nice Guy but I can't see him firing up the players, I get the feeling the players might be buying to much into the hype of #4 defense last year, 2nd year in the system etc... that all of the sudden they are going to be better.

On a positive note Orakpo will be a best, #59 is in his last year and we should try to bring in some oline help because there is no way the lines makes it through the year with out 2 season ending injuries.

I like Zorn for the most part but it seems that he sometimes fails to see when he is also part of the problem.

If the players are taking a lax approach and not putting in effort, that reflects on the coach too. Being a head coach at this level is more than just Xs and Os and scheme. If that were true than Norv would've been a great coach.

I'm glad Zorn puts it on himself to improve the playcalling, scheme, etc. But those young players take a lead from the practices (what other 'pro' experience do they have?) and it sounds like camp has been a little too laid back.

That said, Zorn does appear to learn his lessons (even if it's the hard way) so I'm interested to see how he responds over the next week and the rest of the preseason.

How the team responds to this embarrassment is the next test.

I heard Sonny and Sam saying yesterday that the Skins didn't have the fire that the Ravens had.

The reality is that the Ravens have much better depth across the board, which means that they have a shot at the playoffs again. For the Skins it will be a crap shoot. With emphasis on the crap.

talent... my response to you was censored... not sure why as it was pretty clean, however... I was saying that DURHAM is not a nice place, the campus at Duke is boring and all of the buildings are Gothic architecture which I do not particularly like. I also pointed out that kids who get into UNC out of state are actually kids who could have gotten into Duke as well, since out of state UNC is one of the tougher schools to get into... look it up. Not only that, but I have had friends who go to both schools and all agree that UNC is a more fun school to attend then Duke.

I actually did go to school for academic reasons, I attended Washington University in St. Louis which is as good if not better than Duke is. I also attend a school for the surrounding location and the entertainment factor... college is not all about learning, and anyone who says it is clearly didn't have fun at school.

Clearly, you do not know what you are talking about here and as I was not saying that North Carolina is a bad place, just Duke.

Watching replay now. Skins just don't look competitive at all. Yes, its preseason and score/execution not a big deal yet but the effort is pitiful.

One or two players & its an individual problem but team wide slacking is on the coaching staff just as much as the players. Zorn's leash will start to get cinched up if this type of "performance" keeps being repeated though.

Posted by: will_ga | August 14, 2009 5:39 PM | Report abuse

Agree Zorn "doesn't exactly scream leadership." Offense disorganized, defense looked slow at most positions; at this rate Jim Z could very well lose his job by mid-season. Hope it doesn't come to that, but if so Vinny needs to be on the same train out of town.

About last night's game, I lost interest at halftime, but based on the 1st half I'd say the criticism of Fred davis is a little ridiculous -- I watch every USC game and can't recall him fumbling there -- maybe once. Zorn also said in the presser he doesn't fumble in practice. On the flipside, I was expecting Blache to be much more SALTY. Anyone else surprised by his demeanor after the game, particularly in defending Tryon (who I thought was absolutely terrible)?

OK, let's have a reality check on London Fletcher as well. He was the heart and soul of last year's D, and once Haynesworth is in there his job gets a lot easier. He blew 1 coverage. Relax. Fletcher will be fine. My only defensive worry is our DB depth which looks bad.

Tryon needs to be cut. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last year and I was starting to think he had some potential after reading some things about him in camp this year... mainly him working out with #28, but if he still can't cover anyone after working with Green... then I mean its time to realize that he was a wasted pick and that hes a bust.

He consistently gave wrs 10 yards of cushion... even when it was 3rd and 4 and he could not bump anyone... even for a second. The nfl is about being physical and learning from mistakes sand clearly Tryon is not able to do either... he should be relegated to special teams at best and I would prefer that we just cut the loser now... Zorn and Blache need to stop protecting this kid and realize he sucks

I'm going to give Tryon at least one or two more games before I pass judgment. I would rather he suck the big one in these games and not the real games.

But let's remember - it is just preseason and I believe that last time we went undefeated in preseason we didn't make the playoffs. I prefer the 0-4 preseason, Super Bowl seasons. Let's just hope they use the games to learn and kick some a$$ in the Meadowlands in a few weeks.

Who can't see that this coach can't fire up this team? It started with all of the special considerations for the veterans in camp, it continued with the guys he held of this preseason game, and you can just tell by how he has talked to the press that the fire is waning.

He needs to get back to practice and run everybody through the ringer. Unless someone is missing a limb, they make it to practice. Then he needs to say that from this point forward they are a team and what befalls one befalls all: there will be no days off because of a boo-boo, there will be no games off because they are "resting" a player. Finally, he needs to establish some accountability. Maybe Tryon wasn't as bad as we thought but he still made a ton of mistakes and he should be running windsprints until he pukes when they return to practice. I'd make London Fletcher and Chris Cooley run the sprints with him. I'd kill the whole notion of players being above accountability!

David: The New Originals.
Nigel: The New Originals, and then, uh, they became....
David: The Regulars, they changed their name back to The Regulars, and we thought, well, we could go back to The Originals, but what's the point?

The upside of cutting him now? We just might win the next game. As far as finding someone to replace him, put pads and a helmet on just about anyone and they could stand there and watch the receivers catch the the ball - best seat in the house.

The upside of cutting him now? We just might win the next game. As far as finding someone to replace him, put pads and a helmet on just about anyone and they could stand there and watch the receivers catch the the ball - best seat in the house.

Your response made no sense. It was incoherent.

We didn't lose that game, or any other because of Justin Tryon. Cutting him won't cause us to win the next game.

Putting "anyone" in pads is not the answer. We need someone better. You didn't name someone better.

"Best seat in the house" is nonsense. No one "sits" out there.

Zorn, like the rookies he's talking about, is COACHING timid, and soft. He points to rookies that are playing soft. He says Campbell needs to step up and be a leader. ZORN needs to do that. The guy exudes hesitation.

I can't watch him stammer through another "Gosh, I gotta tell you, geez you know, the level of intensity that's there - that intensity level, the one with the different levels with the effort and intensity on them, we really need to address those intensity levels better by - you know -applying a little more effort there wouldn't hurt."

F- medium.

THE GUY's MOTTO IS MEDIUM!!!!!!! What is that!?

If you see over paid children slacking off and over confident because they won a game and are playing a weaker opponent that week - kick their asses! Don't tell them to be medium.

I know I'm on record as stating it was foolish for Dan and Vinny to pursue Mark Sanchez.

And I know Vinny claims that he faked the Jets out on Sanchez to get Orakpo.

But Sanchez just threw a pretty pass to a Jets player, David Clowny, that I've know since he was in the 10th grade.

Sanchez plays like he 'gets it'.

Nothing phased the kid during the rive where he actually moved the team down field.

Did you hear that Jason Campbell? Sanchez moved the Jets' offense downfield to score is what I said.

Someone get the plate of crow out.

'Cuz Sanchez plays like a lot of redskins' fan will be dining on crow all season.

Sanchez looks like the real deal.

The Lions got raped with no Matt Millen to blame.

Zorn is a players coach who never had to really motivate as a QB Coach. At his age I cant imagine he will learn to motivate and command respect. Ever seen a QB Coach on the field? Its usually a one-on-one interface off on the sideline.. Almost like a psychologist and a client. Now the Skins expect him to come out with Head Coach inspiration and motivation?

My opinion..
6-2 out the gate last year was from leftover Gibbs staff influence...
2-6 the last 8 games of last year, was the unraveling of Gibbs discipline and the realization by the players that the Head Coach was a front office shill.

Its carried over to this year... No passion, no motivation...

From what I just saw, if Sanchez continues to play like he has in this game (against a 1st team defense, mind you), Orakpo will have to be T Suggs to justify drafting him.

Yeah: I know folks want to argue now, but the skins are an offensively challenged team.

If the team flinched on what it thought was a great quarterback to add a defensive end to an already solid defense, folks around the league will laugh at the Wizards of Redskins Park more so than they already do.

Dude, Sanchez, can play.

Let me finish my plate of crow in peace, please.

Posted by: MistaMoe | August 14, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Believe it or not, I'm usually a hater on here because the Skins have consistently proven over the last decade that they deserve it. However, everybody needs to calm down a little on this one. Yes, it was a bad game and the effort was certainly questionable and scary. But the thing I was most worried about (the Oline) actually performed decently. We didn't have Portis, Moss, Haynesworth, and Rogers playing. They're kind of important to our team. Kelly and Thomas were on the field and made some catches without hurting themselves and Hunter the Punter was a stud. The biggest/only big deal that came out of this game for me was how bad Barnes and Tryon looked. That is the only thing that I thought was a big deal last night because we are going to need more than Rogers, Hall, and Smoot to count on and they looked awful! The rest of it doesn't matter much at all. Let's see what they look like preseason week 3 against the Steelers when we play our starters before we freak out.

Let an expert help you. I've eaten a lot of crow and you don't want salt on it. Last thing you want is to bring out the flavor of the crow. Only thing you should be putting on crow is Tabasco. Or hotter. Something with habanero peppers. You want the burn, not the crow.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | August 14, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

"That's exactly why I was confused about the Lions taking Matt Stafford."

From what I've read, Stafford has played well, as well.

Why does this matter to skins fans?: well, the FO will look around the league and see Flacco, Ryan, Cutler, Big Ben, possibly Sanchez/Stafford and ask if a rookie quarterback is worth the number 1 pick next spring.

Increasingly, college quarterbacks come into the league ready to play immediately, and given what they're paid to sign, well, why not let'em?

Yes: Jason Campbell has to fail for that to happen.

But you have to imagine the standard for his success is so incredibly high--and if the team is already hinting dissatisfaction, it'll never be met, no matter what he does.

Posted by: MistaMoe | August 14, 2009 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Tryon got cooked on a few plays, but at least he looked like he has improved. Realistically, he is our 4th corner and coach Blache likes using 3 safeties in a lot of his dime packages. I like second year FS Kareem Moore too.

I totally agree with the tenor of your post. I didn't see the game, how bad did they look? It seems from reading up here that Tryon was giving too much cushion ala Smoot; was this the case? I'd be curious to see the adjustments in technique next outing against the Steelers.

Posted by: RomoLongballs | August 14, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Campbell still needs to work on pocket presence. One of his incomplete passes was due to him sliding the wrong way with respect to his protection.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but I think Colt Brennan has good pocket presence and he moves away from pressure similar to Tony Romo.

Reports that I read on training camp suggests that Colt is better than Campbell at Zorn's medicine-ball drill; I can see it in the games.

Barnes is worth the investment, though.

Tryon is the one who went to the Darrel Green Camp, trained steadily, and has spent a season on a NFL roster--he should know better.

People...

It did not make sense to draft Sanchez... even if he is a great player. We have a lot of needs on this team, and before the draft not a single person here would have said the dline was a strength on this team. Even with Haynesworth in the mix our Dline was suspect. Now, we have a great secondary with a great pass rush. That leads to a great defense. If people stay healthy and perform, I have no doubt we will have one of the top 3 defenses, and they will not only stop teams but they will create opportunities for our offense as well as score on their own.

Moving back to Sanchez, drafting him was giving up on Campbell and I do not think that that was the right choice. Even if Sanchez is the "real deal" he is a rookie and would have needed time to become the "real deal," thus meaning we would have to take a step, if not 2, backwards. This team is not a young team in many key spots. We have a veteran locker room that would not want to see a rookie leading the way. IT would have taken two years for Sanchez to be able to LEAD this team to a victory and to be honest we would not be as good defensively then.

Campbell deserves another chance to prove what hes got. He played GREAT when our line was healthy and playing well and as it deteriorated so did he. Lets see if we can stay healthy and if we can you all know we will be a decent team, so lets stop this crow eating and be intelligent, rational fans...

The two seem somewhat interchangeable, though I think Landry may have more speed. Which makes him well suited to go after the passer OR be the outfielder, I guess=wash. If Moore can hit like that on a consistent basis, I'd like to see him lurking just behind the linebackers.

With an Offense that will never gooooo......

It's beginning to look a lot like Shanahan..

Bottom line.. I thank snydee for sand bagging the Offense and thus giving me back my weekends in 2009 since I wont be wasting my time watching JC running around trying to find 2 seconds to throw for 16 games like I did in 2008.

A 1 million dollar internet bet says Jim Zorn coaches--and should coach--the redskins next season.

Let Zorn live out his contract.

He didn't draft or want Jason Campbell, and can argue he should be given the time to draft the guy he wants to play behind the offensive line he assembles with a new offensive line coach.

Plus: let's play out the season before firing anybody.

Like I said, Campbell was "comfortable." Shyea. That's the problem with things in general right now. Like this thread began, Zorn seems too mellow to motivate. But he does get P O'd sometimes, remember? I seem to recall him chewing someone a new one last year at least once. Campbell should be breathing fire that passes were dropped and coverages missed. I just don't see the desire to be anything more than competent. So come on, Soups, prove us wrong. Once the Skins start scoring 35 points a game we'll all be happy to eat crow. I'll be first in line. Meantime...Rome's still burning.

I hadn't thought of it but the observation that the players are soft/lacking energy and enthusiasm should fall back on the coaches makes sense. Zorn definitely ran a 'soft' training camp - lots of shirts and shells, veterans staying at home not with the team, etc. Let's see what happens next week, but at this point I think if you had to pick 1 person as the problem for the 'soft' play that Zorn was talking about, I think you would have to say it was Zorn himself, and the rest of the coaching staff I guess.

For those of you who don't think Zorn is a big part of the lackluster play last night, just pause and think this one through: how prepared do you think the team would have been if Belichick had been the head coach?

Words from Belichick's star quarterback: "I need the work -- we all need the work," Brady said. "You can't duplicate this on the practice field."

Words from the Redskins head coach: "Clinton will be doubtful for the first game for sure. ...I’m not concerned about how much he plays or doesn’t play, especially in this first game.”

There's a contrast for you. Belichick has his players realizing they need the work to get better. Zorn is making excuses for his players not to play.

My crystal ball says Greg Blache will be running this team before the end of the season as Snyder avoids the Christmas rush and cuts Jim Zorn early.

"I'm still young..and I jus recently started liking broccoli..."

They should legalize broccoli.

You know what I'm talkin' about, don't pretend.

(INSERT all-knowing wink.)

Think of the health benefits and tax revenues that will be generated from the sale of little green trees.

Think of the sales of tacos, snickers bars, chips, salsa, mountain dew, late night 7-Eleven microwaved burritos, nacho cheese, and er, um, um, um, what the f!uck,....oops, I forgot what I was talking about.

Oh, yea, broccoli.

Legalize it, y'all.

Obama can go before the congress and say, "Hey, and new idea has sprouted, and it makes smoke we can believe in."

If legalizing broccoli is successful, I support the idea of putting Bob Marley and Redman on the three dollar bill to celebrate.

Is it too early to start thinking about the 2010 season? I think this one will be a bust. 5-11 will be a reach

I could see how my quoted presentation might misconstrue your position on the subject, but I assure you and any1 else reading this that this is solely the view of Vicc..

Now let's spark up a--oops I meant--start up conversation on this blog about 'broccoli'

Maybe now frak has enough liquid courage in him to show up tonight; he has some interesting thoughts on MJ. Think about the significance of the initials: MJ?

I'm interested in learning about the newest conspiracy theories on extra-terrestrial activities including, but not limited to, 1.crop circles 2.bush's mars endeavors-yada, yada..?.. t_e, you there?

I'm Nate in the PDX, and I approve the conversation over the past few hours up here.

Also agreeing on the hops issue. Pac NW beer people, god bless 'em, are obsessed with hops. If they can add more hops, they do. They friggin' inject hops with other hops. It's a bit much for me.

OK, let's have a reality check on London Fletcher as well. He was the heart and soul of last year's D, and once Haynesworth is in there his job gets a lot easier. He blew 1 coverage. Relax. Fletcher will be fine. My only defensive worry is our DB depth which looks bad.

Three things:
First, it was great to see Kelly and Thomas in there, Kelly made two nice catches in traffic.

Second, before we get too worried about the secondary, Rogers didn't play and I didn't see Hall in that much.

Third, after a CB is burned to to giving too much cushion two or three times, isn't a coach or somebody supposed to grab him and tell him to move up a bit? Just sayin....

as much as the eagle fans do not deserve the potential thrills Vick can bring, I have to give the eagle mgmt their props. they recognize talent when they see it and disregarded the haters & PETA. I watched the eagles lose to the pats last night on NFLN. It was a great game and Philly should have won but they missed a 43yd fg to lose 25-27. McNabb and Brady played the entire first half and both were throwing bombs left and right. both squads were hitting and hustling the entire game. the eagles playmakers are very dangerous. #1 pick Maclin was outstanding at wr and special teams returning kicks. that being said, Jim Zorn and my skins missed a major marketing opportunity to make the skins feared by all teams in the league by getting Vick. you would think that since Zorn was a lefty qb and professes to coach up the position so well, the possibilities with Vick would be endless. I will be rooting for Mike minus playing the skins and wish him the best in his personal life as well. btw I have always questioned the skins scouting department. it's like they find a different breed of athelete as a whole in comparison to the Ravens, Steelers, and Patriots. the Eagles do more with less talent every year. I have serious doubts about Zorn being able to run the ship. HAIL SKINS!

Can anyone tell me what 'Redskins Football' is? You can't, which may be this team's biggest problem. If you have no identity, it's hard to strike fear in other teams or even develop swagger. With Gibbs, you knew what you're getting, and it had a pedigree of success. As a West Coast guy Zorn is philosophically opposed to centering your offense around Portis, and as much as I love JC the West Coast offense doesn't exploit his best skills.

Recall the Dallas game 2 years ago the team lost in Dallas. JC played his arse off, and but for that late INT would have won that game. Last year's Saints game; uncorking that beautiful deep ball to Moss to win the game is the type of fear we should be striking into the hearts of other teams, and I keep hoping Zorn uses his West Coast principles to set up the deep ball skills JC possesses.

I keep saying I see few differences between Rothlesburger, Flacco, and JC, except of course the TALENT AROUND THEM AND THE FRONT OFFICE RUNNING THE TEAM. If the team implodes this year, I could see Jacksonville or Carolina making a move if their qb's don't pan out.

good news, the eagle O line is very shakey. Peters (left tackle) was getting beat by the DE every pass play. finally he came up lame and went to the locker room. they have alot of injured O linemen right now but you can bet that come regular season they will piece something together. that was the only weakness I saw in their team. later!

While it is difficult to make judgments after only one preseason game and no videotape, it appeared that there were a few good things.. Reed Doughterty was solid, in position, making plays etc. That was good to see. I am not sure who was at fault in that long pass over the SAM spot where Fincher got left in the dust.. it looked like he was blitzing and got caught in between. I saw McIntosh make a nice play and he looked like his old self. Chris Wilson seemed to be everywhere.. that was nice to see.. it looked to me that he was making the transition to LB very well. On the blitz, it was nice to see that Marcus Mason was able to pick up one of the two blitzers but he probably should have taken the inside guy... so that glass is still half empty. But he popped his man pretty hard, looked like CP on that hit..!!
