It's (Gulp) 14-0 after a Quarter

They stink on offense and defense. They have no jam. They turn the ball over and make silly mistakes. They have too few playmakers and a flawed roster.

They have the look of a five-win team.

Portis cant get anything on the ground and now they have to chase the game again and throwing it is not the way for them to go.

On defense, they pretty much stink right now. A 79-yard screen on an obvious screen down. Come on. Cedric Benson running wild? Yikes.

Here are a few stats, as if you needed quantification for this ugliness:

Skins had zero first downs, the Bengals eight.

Skins had 19 rushing yards, the Bengals 62.

Skins had 42 total yards, the Bengals 155.

PATHETIC

Posted by: skins1110 | December 14, 2008 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Anybody up for some good ole' fashion draft talk?

Posted by: ga8085 | December 14, 2008 1:56 PM | Report abuse

This team has quit on Zorn.

Posted by: az_david | December 14, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

This is so pathetic I could care less if the whole team suffered career ending injuries. They have completely quit on Zorn and that is about as damning as can be for a coach. He will be fired and should be. Illegal formations, horrible play calling and no fire shown from team. This is like the team in 2000 that was 6-2 and fell apart and quit on Terry Robiskie.

Posted by: JasonLaTempleton | December 14, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

I think that Snyder is (privately) trying to replace Zorn. I think that he has allowed Portis to undermine him so that he could replace him. I don't want to say that the team is intentionally throwing the game, but I think that they aren't giving 100% here.

Anybody up for some good ole' fashion fire jim zorn talk?

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | December 14, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

I am a life long redskins fan. I do not beleive that they will ever be a Super Bowl winner with the current ownership. Teams reflect thier leadership. The irony is that the present owner loves the team as well, but can never be a winner with them. Cruel twist of fate.

Posted by: scavanaugh | December 14, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

wow way to be negative janso, what a hater!

I'm not sure but I think Beyonce' is talking making eyes at me during that DirectTV commercial.

If Snyder can get Cowher, Zorn is gone after this performance.

Posted by: austin987654 | December 14, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

The main problem is that the owner has not backed up Zorn up. He has allowed players to undermine the coach. And that is what Portis is doing. Portis is intentionally undermining the team. I don't want to say that they're throwing the game, but I also think that they're not giving their best.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 14, 2008 1:55 PM
------------

Yeah, Portis is the cause of Cooley's fumble, JC's inability to spot open receivers, the o-line not blocking well, and the defense suddenly laying down like a red carpet for the Bungles.

You figured it out.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 14, 2008 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Unless Snyder has Cowher privately waiting I don't understand what is happening.

No question about it and I have to say I am not surprise. So what you want about CP but I believe he just said what others in the locker room believes and it is showing up on the field.

Horrible play calling.. The plays just dont mesh.. They are good plays but called in the wrong sequence!!

Posted by: ga8085 | December 14, 2008 2:02 PM | Report abuse

Austin--It wouldn't surprise me if Snyder has talked to Cowher already. I think that that is why he may have allowed Portis to go on the radio on a Snyder-owned radio station and blast Zorn. Snyder may be trying to turn the team against Zorn so that he can replace him in the off-season. But would Cowher be able to deal with the management structure here in DC?

How many fair-catches does Randel-El have today?

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | December 14, 2008 2:02 PM | Report abuse

Everytime Santana returns a punt, something happens. Everytime Randle El returns a punt, he runs around for a 1 yard gain (or minus yards). Coincedence? I think not.

Snidely Owl will only get Cowher if he does what he did with Marty. Take himself, Vinnie and his other cronies completely out of the org chart on the football side of things. Give complete control to Cowher. Cowher does the draft.

Ya have to agree, the Redskins will never amount to much with Da Danny and Da Vinny, complete non-football people who honestly thing they are football savvy lol, Jerry Jones knows more about football on his little finger than these two combined and I can't stand da Boys. Shame on you who thought this team was anything at 6-2, luck was all it was, and it is not Zorn's fault, this ROSTER STINKS period. No depth, no playmakers....what a waste of drafts, esp this year's 3 so-called pass catchers who are busts. Sure bring in a new coach lol...but Gibbs performed A MIRACLE getting this roster to the playoffs ... he saw the writing on the wall...this front office is HOPELESS...how can you not give Gibbs free reign picking players he wants...and do you think Zorn had a thing to do with this year's disaster...lol...he can only hope to get fired to get a breath of fresh air ...and I hope he makes BANK on his contract...

it's CP's fault that JC is in his fourth year and he plays worse than Flacco and Ryan.

it's CP's fault that Zorn's playcalling SUCKS.

Trezmartin--the problem is that Snyder has not backed Zorn up. He has allowed players like Portis to go on the radio on stations that Snyder himself owns to trash the coach. Zorn hasn't gotten the support of the management. That is the problem here.

I think that the owner has lost confidence in Zorn and has decided to already get rid of him. He probably made the decision a while back.

I remember that Steve Spagnolo turned the job down. I remember that other more desirable candidates, so Snyder may have planned to get rid of Zorn all along.

The skins are a vivid demonstration of the need for strong leadership. Zorn's gotta be able to rein in Portis - or trade him. An RB canNOT be in control of a team. Doesn't work that way.

Still early yet...damn! score one lousy TD and get flagged for something stupid. Stop hating on Jasano because he is saying what a lot of us think but are just to damn dumb-founded to put it up here. Damn Bengals don't score a td in almost 3 games but get their first against the Skins defense...don't have a long drive all season but does it against the Skins. At least CP cannot accuse Zorn of giving up on the running game. He has 14 carries. Betts has 2. They are still behind.

Posted by: periculum | December 14, 2008 2:21 PM | Report abuse

Huge mo change, perhaps (IF they score, big if), but the horrible beginning just shows the lack of concentration and the lack of leadership...the utter disarray that, thanks to our local media, had been going on behind the scenes.

Now, it's playing out in public.

Portis 12 for 38
Benson 10 for 55.

Wouldn't those be reversed if CP was such a playmaker?

Yeah its call the O-LINE SUCKS!! The skins O-line is like a 3rd world country of o-lines..... What is he suppose to run over 11 guys??

The problem here is that Snyder has allowed players on the team to undermine the coach. That's one of the MAJOR problems. If Zorn can't have the backing of the owner then he is in trouble.

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | December 14, 2008 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Actually, if they win this one it will feel like two wins, considering we'd already written it off as a loss after seven minutes.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 14, 2008 2:25 PM | Report abuse

Whatever they do they need to go in with 17-10 or 17-14. I hope that they aren't stupid and go for it on 4th down or try to do something desperate.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 14, 2008 2:25 PM | Report abuse

Another thing. I"l admit this is a minor one, but why when the skins win the toss, they put the unit with the least confidence on the field frist? This gives the momentum to the opposing team all the time.

No, you're wrong. Top tier coaches don't have this sort of problem and don't worry about it. This is the problem of a rookie, second tier coach -- who may some day become a top tier coach, but not today.

From PFT:

The folks at WhoDeyRevolution, who previously have demonstrated their disgruntlement with the Bengals and team president Mike Brown by purchasing billboards in the Cincinnati area calling for Brown to hire a General Manager, claim to have installed 1,000 urinal cakes at Paul Brown Stadium prior to Sunday’s home game against the Redskins.

The cakes display the team’s record under Brown’s ownership — 98-186-1 — along with a fitting call to “Get pissed!

Hey, Red, this doesn't give them a license to undermine the coach and the other players. "I made a touchdown, so I get to draw a 15-yard penalty!"

Are they good? Yeah. Are they class? No, they're bush.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 14, 2008 2:32 PM | Report abuse

Talent_Evaluator--Top tier coaches succeed when the owner and upper management back them up. Snyder has allowed Portis to go on a Synder-owned radio station and trash the coach. How can any coach succeed when the owner won't back him up and allows players to undermine him in public like that?

Posted by: jiacinto | December 14, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

te/red, please focus your energies into buying urinal cakes that say something derogatory about Vinny....

Fred Davis incomplete. Should say it all. He only trusts Moss, Sellers, and Betts in the passing game. Other team has to know where he will go.

Posted by: periculum | December 14, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

pleat pleat

Posted by: BeantownGreg | December 14, 2008 2:36 PM | Report abuse

And furthermore, how do you think that other plays might feel when Snyder allows Portis to go on a Snyder-owned radio station to trash the coach? What also seems to be the crux of the problem is that the players see one standard for themselves--and another for Portis. That can't help but lower morale.

...yeah right...

The Redskins are a joke from the owner all the way down the line. Snyder makes money for himself while handing the fans one lousy season after another. Neither he nor his butt boy Cerrato knows anything about football talent. Zorn is in way over his head. Poor game strategy, can't adjust his game plans, weird play calling, and weak clock management. The offensive line can't block, the defensive line can't rush the quarterback, special teams are mediocre, and many players are just plain incompetent and overpaid. A lame team led by a greedy owner who does not have the ability to attract and keep the high quality player and coaching talent needed to compete in the NFL.

WE HAVE PLAYERS THAT ARE O.K. WITH TAKING PENALTIES?!!!!....SMILING ON THE SIDELINES AFTER A STUPID PENALTY....OR WHEN WE TURN THE BALL OVER..... WHAT'S WORSE IS THERE WILL BE NOTHING BUT "EXCUSES AFTER THE GAME"... BY EVERYONE.... I AM TIRED OF SEEING A LACK OF " HEART"... THIS REDSKIN TEAM IS BULL@$#%!!!!!

Posted by: jkspaw | December 14, 2008 5:39 PM | Report abuse

This team is dead in the water. They have lost faith in Zorn. I, as well as many, many others, continue to lay fault at the door of the front office. As long as Snyder and his joke of a vice-president/player personel director/wannabe general manager are here we will never rise above mediocrity. This last draft was (typically) a disaster, Zorn will make no one forget Joe Gibbs or George Allen. The entire offensive line needs to be overhauled because Cerrato has allowed it to become old. Carlos Rogers is once again proving he is a bust. Campbell is strictly a middlein' QB. Portis will never be able to last past the mid-season point after his career of pounding (even though he has all the heart in the world). The D line is a joke insofar as a pass rush. And on and on and on.
Settle in for a LONG stretch of 8-8, 5-11, 6-10 years folks.
