Redskins Insider: August 24, 2008 - August 30, 2008

Frost Unhappy With Decision, But Moving On (First Stop - Seattle)

Just got off the phone with released punter Derrick Frost. He praised special teams coach Danny Smith and implied that the decision to let him go in favor of rookie draft pick Durant Brooks was made by the front office. "I feel like I was dealt with dishonestly," Frost said....

Three Cuts Now Confirmed

The two other cuts reported earlier by the NFL Network have been confirmed: Todd Wade and Marcus Mason, Jason Reid says. We'll post more cuts as names dribble out or the team releases it. Hats off to Adam Schefter for his scoops this morning....

Frost Cut

From Jason: Punter Derrick Frost was cut today, a source said. Frost had better numbers in exhibition games and more experience but the team decided to keep rookie Durant Brooks. The Redskins informed Frost of their decision within the last 24 hours. After Frost had an inconsistent 2007 season, the...

Cut Day

Hard to imagine anything too shocking coming out of the Skins cuts, and unless they actually do put Malcolm Kelly on IR then I suspect it will be a pretty mundane afternoon. The punter battle remains the most interesting plotline (my hunch is Frost). Marcus Mason got a lot of...

Heyer Gives Jansen a Run for His Money

No lack of news coming from Jim Zorn's press conference. Hmm, where to start... Right tackle Jon Jansen is fighting for his job with Stephon Heyer. Zorn made it very clear that Jansen is in a battle and could be replaced by Heyer at some point. Jansen is the longest-serving...

Now, the Games Are for Real

This may be a holiday weekend -- I had the Metro car to myself and stretched out across four seats! -- but it'll be a busy couple of days at Redskins Park with roster cuts coming today or Saturday, ahead of Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline for setting the 53-man squad....

The Reception for Gregg Williams

Jason Reid reports: Not surprisingly, Gregg Williams, Washington's former assistant head coach-defense, was the center of attention during pregame warm-ups at FedEx Field. Many Redskins players hugged Williams, now Jacksonville's top defensive coach, and chatted with him as he stood near the Redskins' emblem at the 50-yard line. Cornerback Shawn...

Game Day (Well, At Least On Offense)

Hey guys, sorry to be away this week. I needed a few personal days to get some housing and moving stuff sorted out, and well, I was locked into the days. No chance to be flexible with settlements, even in the wake of a 47-3 drubbing. I'm of two...

Closing Time for 2008 Preseason Looms

I'm not sure exactly how this happened, but the Case of the Purloined Tomahawk has been closed. Naturally, there was a Cooley and a guy in a burgundy and gold bodysuit involved. That's really all I care to know. There actually is a game tonight, with the Jasons and Mike...

Sean Taylor Auction Announced

An auction of some of Sean Taylor's possessions will take place at 5 p.m. Sept. 5 at Brooks Auction Transfer in Bealton, Va. I realize that this will be sad and perhaps even upsetting to some, but please note that proceeds will go to the trust fund for Taylor's daughter,...

Kelly Ready to "See How It Works"

Tried to post this item from Redskins Notes last night, but Loseable Type was, well, I believe the technical term is "freaking out." (I swear I had nothing to do with the multiple posts, but, if you're going to have a malfunction, have a malfunction that increases the count, I...

Fletcher, Griffin on Williams' Return

Gregg Williams, the Redskins' former assistant head coach--defense, returns to FedEx Field on Thursday night as Jacksonville's top defensive coach. Williams still has strong ties to many Redskins players, who will be pleased catch up with him before the game. After kickoff, however, it will be all business, the Redskins...

Landry Says He'll Start Sept. 4

Despite sitting out the preseason because of a strained left hamstring, free safety LaRon Landry plans to start in the season opener Sept. 4 against the New York Giants at Giants Stadium, Jason Reid reports. Goode Released; Verdun-Wheeler Back

Although the Redskins got down to the 75-player roster limit yesterday with the cuts of Matt Sinclair and Burl Toler, they released Jason Goode this morning and re-signed Danny Verdun-Wheeler. The team had released Verdun-Wheeler on Aug. 4, along with Stuart Schweigert. (Man, Aug. 4 seems like half a season...

Taylor: "Next Few Days Will Tell A Lot"

Encouraged because his right knee injury is not as serious as initially feared, defensive end Jason Taylor still hopes to play in the season opener, Jason Reid reports. "In a perfect world, I'd like to play Thursday but it doesn't count, so I won't be there Thursday for sure," Taylor...

Offensive Players Want to Play Thursday

Jim Zorn has told the offensive starters that, after their performance in a 47-3 loss Saturday night to Carolina, they need to prepare to play Thursday and veteran players told Jason Reid and Paul Tenorio that they agree. "Yeah, no doubt we have to do this," wide receiver Antwaan Randle...

Linebacker Matt Sinclair says he has been released by the Redskins. He bumped into Jason Reid and Paul Tenorio at Redskins Park and told them he has three fractures in a lumbar vertebra (the L-5; we are seeking a little medical clarification on that). "They let me go," he said....

Time to Think About Jacksonville

It's going to be a tight workweek for the Redskins, who may have to actually play Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars (and a gguy you'll all remember: Gregg Williams) at FedEx Field. The last preseason game is usually a snore-fest, but this one promises to be a little different...

Fox, Oshinowo and Smith Released

The Redskins have released three players: Vernon Fox, Babatunde Oshinowo and Dorian Smith. Fox, a 28-year-old safety who also played in Detroit and San Diego, had played in 30 games with the Skins over the last two seasons. He started six games and had 44 tackles and one interception. Oshinowo,...

The Morning After the Nightmare Before

Well, I thought that maybe there'd be more positives now that a clear, clean morning is upon us. Not so much. Sure, it's only preseason, but in the one preseason game that mattered, the Redskins had their worst outing. What do you think the biggest issue was and how do...
