Landry clarifies his comments about playing linebacker

Several Insider readers have emailed me seeking information about safety LaRon Landry's switch to linebacker.

Although Landry is among the players with whom I speak often, and I wrote a fairly long entry about him recently, I was not aware he might be moving to linebacker. Landry said he would play more strong safety than free this season in the Redskins' new 3-4 defense, but linebacker?

"Nah, man, I'm playing strong safety," Landry said in a phone interview Sunday.

Apparently, Landry in some interviews mentioned linebacker in connection with his duties this season, so he clarified what he meant.

"What I'm saying is, what I was trying to say, is that strong safety, in my role this season as far as being a leader, I want to know what everybody does on the field. Even the d-linemen and the linebackers," he said. "With me playing strong safety, I'm at linebacker depth, so I need to know my [run] gaps, my coverages and everything.

"With that said I know the linebacker position right now. I want to be able to explain to everybody what the MIKE [middle], WILL [weak-side] and SAM [strong-side] linebackers are supposed to do in our defense. ... The MIKE and the strong [safety] and the free are basically the quarterbacks of the defense. They need to know everything. That's what I was saying."

"As a 3-4 DE, I think AH could do everything that cat can do, and then some."

Especially if he's the right side defensive end.

He gets pressure right up in the quarterback's face, thus flushing him towards Orakpo from the other side.

He'll stuff any running action coming his way.

Then, when you shift into a 4-3 look, he's back at tackle.

How can you lose with the stuff we use?

And we should plan to use AH like the cards do D Dockett and the 'boys J Ratliff.

He's playing for a contract now, so we should get a couple good years out of him before he's falls of the face of the Earth like Haynesworthless.

Posted by: narielnasl | April 26, 2010 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Will all Landry's new muscles help him wrap up on tackles? Or did he get bigger so he could continue trying to drop big hits rather than make plays?

I guess now that he gained 20 pounds he should be even better in coverage though huh?

My Bad. Couple weeks back, when I saw how rocked up he was at the 'skins weight room and read that he was currently 230 hoping for 240, I said he would shift to LB.

There's needs at LB and the team has 2-3 SS guys,

Adding Riley eases the need, one hopes at LB.

If LaROn is playing SS, skins really need a free safety.

Sharper is sure worth a plane ticket to chat up.

As big as Sharper was to that defense last year, you'd think they wouldn't have a problem with re-signing him.

But they haven't....

Adalius Thomas and/or Darren Sharper?

nay...

And before you fix your face to say 'Donovan McNabb' think about McNabb's situation and how it compares to either Thomas and Sharper.

Red,

I know you are vying for President of the P1Funk Fan Club, which is why you keep taking every opportunity to talk about me...and that's cool.

I very much hope that LL30 bounces back this year and plays great.

BUT...if he's Josh Bidwell's personal punt protector by Week 6, just don't come cursing at me, and remember that I tried to prepare you for it...

Update: Just looked it up. He's listed as a LB on Redskins.com. So I stand corrected.

Shoot, why not put him at OLB if he can get up to 245-250lbs?

He'll blitz more and cover less, and that's a good thing.

FWIW, I believe Orakpo will primarily be on the strong side, unless this kid from LSU can cover TE's off the line. Typically the SSLB will draw the underneath TE coverage, and the SS will draw over the top, and I don't see anyone else having more athleticism there.

Because they share responsibilities, tho, that means Orakpo and Landry can be a blitz threat on most plays, as one picks up the others responsibility (Orakpo drops back/ Landry comes up). This is a departure from last year, where Orakpo mostly rushed when coverage backs would assume TE responsibility.

On the weak side (if that's what you are calling right side, we agree), that's where I see some opportunity for Haynesworth to make waves. If the NT sets the point, Haynesworth and Carter with a head of steam will create all sorts of protection problems.

"Sharper is sure worth a plane ticket to chat up."

If we're loaded at safety to where one of our safeties is about to become a linebacker, why bring in another safety?

The singular spot of weakness is at linebacker and right tackle.

Who replaces Hicks should he get hurt?

If M Williams fails at right guard, do you go with Cook or Rhinehart or Williams if your intent is to play Hicks at right tackle?

The only free agent worth the look is F Adams moved to right tackle.

You can move Hicks to guard, sit Williams and his learning curve, and have this line on the field come Sept:

Williams--lt

Dockery--lg

Rabach--c

Hicks--rg

Adams--rt

I'd rather line up like this than have Sharper on the roster.

And besides, Sharper ain't leavin' Nawlins and Grilliams for nothing but money, and if anything, Shanallen has shown no interest in paying anybody more than what they are worth.

No to Sharper. No to Faneca. Young players cant get any better by continually signing vets. Furthermore Sharper is done. After the first half of the season last year he was not nearly as effective. I would rather have Kareem Moore out there. They should play Rinehart and Moore to see what they have. If Shanahan is truly here to build this team thats what he will do.

Can't hurt to ask, although I'm more concerned about the right tackle spot than RG.

Much rather take the cash and put it toward getting Levi Jones back here and stashing Heyer away as a backup while we develop Capers.

Between Hicks, Liechtensteiger, BMW, Rhino, and Will Montgomery I imagine we can find someone at RG that's not going to burn the team down...

Free Safety:

1. Primary responsibility is NEVER let rcvr get behind you. Keep rcvr between you and the ball. You are the last defense.

2. Strong safety has to tackle, cover, and blitz.

LL making Pro Bowl is believing in the Easter Bunny. His tackling is suspect. If he can bring on the spear tackle, it will make the highlight reel, but on too many occasions he misses or just gets run over.

In todays nfl both safeties must have cover skills to be considered an honorable mention to pro bowl.

He is an adequate SS, nothing more, nothing less.

Just say no to Flo'.

Would rather have Levi Jones at RT. He's younger and more mobile - a much better fit for a zone-blocking tackle.

Flozell Adams is big, but he's not moving around anywhere.

Unless they change the rule to let him start tripping people, I don't see him fitting very well in Shanny's scheme.

As expected, the Bucs have bounced fullback B.J. Askew and defensive tackle Chris Hovan.

Also gone, per PewterReport.com, is guard Arron Sears, a second-round draft pick in 2007 whose career was derailed in 2009 when he went AWOL during the offseason. He ultimately joined the team in November, but he was overweight and out of shape.

Guard Shawn Murphy, cornerback Stoney Woodson, and punter Sam Paulescu also were released by Tampa.

Because Sears has fewer than four years of service, he'll be subject to the waivers

I agree.

The notion that LL30's covering liabilities won't be an issue simply b/c he's changing back positions is silly.

I believe he's at his best around the LOS getting to the ball-carrier and the QB.

When he has to tackle in the open field he's suspect.

When he has to cover, he's suspect.

Unfortunately, a SS who is effective around the LOS, but suspect in coverage and the open field ends up being a part-time player in the NFL.

So I guess LL really is the new JC. His lack of performance, and in fact, the entire defenses lack of performance against the pass, stems only from the stench of his missed tackles, and had nothing to do with Carlos 'double move' Rogers, Dante 'Two hand tag em' Hall, and Reed 'Im a nice filler guy but not starting material' Doughty. Nothing to do with playing off 50 yards, nothing to do with no sustained pass rush (though improved from the year before)... Yep. Get rid of him for a 7th rounder and we are Super Bowl bound, baby!

How about we give Landry an opportunity with real coaches and, oh, I don't know, let him play his NATURAL position for an ENTIRE season before we relegate him to punt-protection duty, okay?

Landry struggles in over the top zone coverages where he has to read and react without letting the receivers get in behind.

He's much better in man coverage or if he's assigned to a more aggressive underneath zone. The only time in Landry's career that stands out with him getting beat in man coverage was against the Raiders and Darren McFadden. Other than that, when matched up on TEs, RBs, or slot WRs, Landry has been pretty successful.

The bigger issue to me is Landry's open-field tackling. He really struggles from the FS position with that. Playing closer to the LOS with less space between he and the ball should sharpen that up, real quick.

I have a feeling we could see a pro-bowl year from Landry. We saw this a little with ST21 in his young career. GG altered the defensive scheme to take advantage of Taylor's best attributes, and Haslett can do the same with Landry.

Laron's a young player, no sense thinking he can't be good/get better, this idea that he has been "exposed as a sham" as p1 has been puking out of his finger tips for like 10 hours now is absurd.

Dude, if I could puke out of my fingertips, I wouldn't be wasting my time typing up here. I'd be cashing that junk in on America's Got Talent or some dig like that.

In any case, thanks for the straw man, but I don't grow corn, so you can have it back.

My point from the start has very clearly been that LL30 has been exposed as a liability in coverage.

I think that's a fair point considering the disaster that he was as a free safety, the fact that teams picked on him in coverage, and the fact that opposing QBs apparently had a cumulative QB rating of 139.8 throwing in his coverage.

Re-sign Levi Jones?

They made him an offer that he did refuse.

But you wonder if he'll wait out OTAs, and sign late in the spring or just hangout for a better offer.

Either way, it's a dumb move on his part as it's obvious he's not going to get a 2-3 year with nice cash, not in this vet market.

He should sign, play well in camps, and force the team to make a decision, because as it stands now, T Williams has taken his place.

And being greedy can cause a player to not have one on a team.

one thing I have noticed in a lot of the pickups on defense is there is a lot of player versatility

Posted by: alex35332 | April 26, 2010 4:19 PM | Report abuse

I pulled up the roster according to the skins website and rather than making up a depth chart I am going to list each player by what positions I think they are capable of in a 4-3 and 3-4 line.

Carriker, Adam DE 6-6 296 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE/DT
Daniels, Phillip DE 6-5 305 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE/DT
Jackson, Rob DE 6-4 269 3-4 DE/OLB, 4-3 DE
Holmes, Antoine DL 6-2 289 3-4 DE, 4-3 DT
Peterson, Greg DL 6-5 315 3-4 NT/DE, 4-3 DT
Golston, Kedric DT 6-4 300 3-4 DE, 4-3 DT
Haynesworth, Albert DT 6-6 350 3-4 DE/NT, 4-3 DT
Montgomery, Anthony DT 6-6 330 3-4 NT, 4-3 DT
Alexander, Lorenzo LB 6-1 275 3-4 OLB, 4-3 OLB/DE/DT
Blades, H.B. LB 5-10 242 3-4 ILB, 4-3 MLB/OLB
Bowen, Alvin LB 6-1 223 3-4 ILB, 4-3 OLB/MLB
Carter, Andre LB 6-4 253 3-4 ILB, 4-3 DE
Fletcher, London LB 5-10 245 3-4 ILB, 4-3 MLB
Gatewood, Curtis LB 6-3 240 3-4 OLB/ILB, 4-3 OLB/MLB
Henson, Robert LB 6-0 242 3-4 OLB/ILB, 4-3 OLB/MLB
Jarmon, Jeremy LB 6-3 277 3-4 DE/OLB, 4-3 DE/OLB
McIntosh, Rocky LB 6-2 238 3-4 ILB, 4-3 OLB
Orakpo, Brian LB 6-4 260 3-4 DE/OLB, 4-3 DE/OLB
Riley, Perry LB 6-0 238 3-4 ILB, 4-3 OLB/MLB
Wilson, Chris LB/DE 6-4 247 3-4 ILB, 4-3 OLB/DE

Now I don't think they are all going to play those positions but I think they are capable of them based off size and what we have seen some do in the past.

2 things have me worried. One we have only two guys who can be said to be big enough to play NT, Monty and fat albert. Secondly we have plenty of LB prospects but only one true MLB/ILB in Fletcher, Rocky could be able to transition to WILB in the 3-4 but who knows how he will do.

He's been played out of position by the previous regime and while he may benefit from exposure to free s., he will do better now. Can't judge him to date because of bad coaching and placement on field by Blache, Zorn

Posted by: ElYeah | April 26, 2010 4:21 PM | Report abuse

This is ridiculous. LL has played out of position since Sean Taylor died. He was, is and will always be better around the line of scrimmage than he is in coverage. That's why he's a SS. Blame the front office for not finding a better free safety to relieve him, they had what, 4 years? It's like saying a tackle is a lousy blocker because he drops a pass on a tackle eligible play. Stupid.

Do they go back previous seasons? 'cause I'm wondering what was Sean Taylor's defensed cumulative QB rating....

Maybe they should've cut or traded Sean Taylor after the 2006 season. '06 wasn't one of Taylor's best.... As a matter of fact I remember Taylor struggling in coverage his first few years in the league -- AT his natural FS position.

When he started to beast out, Gregg Williams said it was due to him asking LESS of Sean Taylor as opposed to more.

I think it's known for a fact that Laron Landry was in a similar situation last year. How about we see how he does in this "make or break year" before we rate him sh*t.

"One we have only two guys who can be said to be big enough to play NT, Monty and fat albert."

What about Maake and Carriker?

I'm not persuaded that a good NT has to be a real giant. Take Kelly Gregg of the Ravens. He returned from injury in 2009 to get 63 tackles, 46 solo, and 3 sacks. Gregg is charitably listed at 6' and 310 lbs.

Or Jay Ratliff of Dallas, who's around 6'3" and 300, but had 40 tackles, 6 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.

Those were two of the best NTs in football. So what's wrong with a strong, squat guy like Ked Gholston?

So now he is going to fall for double moves with TE and Running backs? If the man played smart and not trying to take people out with one shot, every play, he might be productive. Haslett has repeatedly said there will not be a SS and FS in his defense -- just safeties responsible for one half of the field.

Sharper might be a good pickup, but which younger safety would you release: Doughty, Horton, Moore, or Holmes?

I doubt the Skins would keep six safeties on the final roster -- five might even be a stretch, since they may need an additional DL or LB...

Redskin Maake Kemoeatu calls it a career
Michael David Smith
April 26, 2010, 4:40

Current Redskin, and former Panthers nose tackle, Maake Kemoeatu has decided to retire instead of rehabbing from the torn achilles he suffered last year. He has been rehabbing it for the past 6 months, however with little progress being made. This leaves the Redskins perilously thin at NT, with Albert Haynesworth objecting to play there.

Of course, I'll rate him this year based on how he plays. Since we're going to keep him that's all I can do. That's what I try to do with every player.

That's what I did with Campbell.

That's what I did with AH.

I don't have anything personal against any of these guys bad or good. My favorite Redskins are the ones who play well and WIN for this team.

I said LL30 SUCKED last year b/c he did. Plain and simple. Considering we invested a top pick in him, I would be ecstatic to see him regain his composure and put together a Pro Bowl year.

The year ST21 sucked, the problem was simple. He was being asked to play deep center AND to come up and play the run. The reason he was getting burned was simple - play-action. Once the coaches wised up and took away his responsibility to play the run, he wasn't susceptible to play-action anymore. Problem solved.

I hope the solution is that simple for LL30. I doubt it, but I do hope.

Cartwright played eight seasons in Washington, totaling 222 kick returns to go with 215 carries.

When he said it on National TV during a game he was talking about QB's.

???

D.Hall is a 2x ProBowler, was our best cover DB last year and led the team in INTs.

He's attended every camp, OTA, and workout since becoming a Redskin. Even last year when Zorn told vets they could stay at home during training camp, DHall did not.

The valid knocks on him are that he's is very reliable in run-support and had an atrocious 8-game stretch with the Raiders.

In short, he's not really like Laron landry at all.

If you want to say Madden makes no sense, go ahead. But he's used that 2guys = no guys quite a bit ... and not just about QBs. Not just about football players.

If you want to catch him, he's on local radio (kcbs) and they podcast him.

"...re-sign levi!"

"No one is talking about how Cable came out and said Campbell has to "compete" for the starting job...if he can't beat out Gradkowski and Russell, he's DONE!"

Slow down with the galactic pronouncements, bro'.

I like Soup's chances in Oaktown.

J Russell is the goner.

Gradkowski is a great deep thrower, but is coming off injury, and who knows if he's gonna be 100% come Sept..

So if I'm the raiders, maybe I re-fashion my offense to watch Campbell does best.

The recent intelligent draft and trade for Campbell both show that maybe the Al Davis Gang is sick of losing.

So with Campbell as starter, they run more (is D McFadden the other bust?), play action pass more, and throw short to mid range passes to J Ford, Heyword-Bey, and Lewis Murphy.

I find a speedy tight end. I make sure he has protection and someone to massage his tender ego after the bruising it endured in D.C..

Campbell did throw for 3,600 yards behind a porous line. If anything, he is not a finished product.

Maybe he gets to the Black Hole with a chip on his shoulder and decides to throw 1st and regret later.

The raiders' team and fanbase will take any kind of professional leadership from Jason Campbell in the wake of Russell's failure and Gradkowski's anonymity.

In Oaktown, I'd say, Soup might be on.

With the draft in the rearview mirror, 2010 season predictions won't be far behind.

The fine gentlemen at Bodog.com have updated their Super Bowl odds after the draft and free agency, with the Jets and Redskins being among the big risers since February.

The Jets have moved from 25:1 to 12:1 to win the Super Bowl. The Redskins have moved from 50:1 to 28:1 after the Donovan McNabb trade.

I heard somewhere that world class sprinters can't really be measured against these type of guys. The sprinters make up the times in the later parts of the runs where their momentum helps them with the speed. I heard that the sprinters would have about the same splits. DeAngelo Hall: "We'll dominate our division"
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 26, 2010 8:33 PM ET
I have to be honest. I'm still a little fried from draft weekend and trying to recover.

So let's present these words from Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall to Dan Steinberg of DC Sports Bog without a lot of comment. Hall believes the Redskins will win 11-12 games next year. Why you ask?

"It's based on the talent we feel like we've got. "It's based on the improvements I feel like we've made. It's based on the scheme," Hall said. "The scheme alone is gonna give us four or five more wins. The games we lost by two, three points, we'll win those games, easy."

Hall was just getting warmed up.

"We'll dominate our division, off of bringing Donovan McNabb in here, a guy who's dominated the division in the past," Hall said. "So that's just an educated guess. That's an educated guess, and I stand behind. I'll stand behind that. I'll fight and claw to try to make that happen."

Justin Tryon would be the weakest safety EVER, no matter how fast he ran.

Ryan Clark is about as close as you can get to too weak to play FS.

You cant just take some pencil neck with a nice 40 and put him at FS. FS, above ALL else requires intelligence. CBs usually make their way by having nice 40 times.

Not the kinda guys you want as your last line of defense against a TD. Sure tackling. Play the run, too. Don't bite on moves. Watch QB the whole time. Stay deeper than the deepest receiver. Destroy anything near you, so they don't forget.

Troy P is a great safety. Tryon would embarrass the entire organization - the entire country.

What is scary is, what exactly did you guys like about Sean Taylor?

Turnover machine?
Right place at the right time a lot?
Punishing tackler?
Play deep AND behind the line of scrimmage?
Personally sought to intimidate best players of other teams?
Late hit here and there? (sending message)

If you see ANY of those in Justin Tryon, maybe I've got his number wrong. The guy I see can barely cover his own man. And when his guy gets the ball, he can barely bring him down, if at all.

Talk about somebody who should have been run out of town.

Maybe next year, after the Raiders find out how Campbell is making their organization look like hammered sh!t, and McNabb is nursing whatever injury, we can trade Tryon for Jason Campbell straight up.

I mean, they'd HAVE to go for it.
Look at their 40 times!!
It's a no-brainer!!

Actually, maybe we can use Tryon as a QB, because Colt will be on his third hip replacement and Wrecks Nessman will make Campbell look like Peyton Manning with Michael Jordan's heart.

I've GOT to ask, if you're building a team, why would you want Rex Grossman on your roster?

That speaks volumes. I don't like it.
He's a proven bum. Are there NO other guys out there? BS. I call BS.

He should be gone just for being a bum. He's a Bum. A dirty Bum. Always has been. The guy is a Bum.

"Bomb Probe Turns Up Vibrator

APRIL 19--A California Highway Patrol office was briefly evacuated earlier this month when investigators became concerned that an arrestee might have been carrying a concealed explosive device. When officers collared Steven Ferrini on a drug charge, a search of the 60-year-old suspect turned up "a suspicious wire, with an on/off switch" in his pants pocket. "The wire was found to extend from the pant pocket to the subject's anus," according to a CHP report.

The defendant is reportedly a cowboys' fan who hoped to receive a tryout as a tight end.

Why does everyone keep questioning why we have Rex Grossman as a backup quarterback? Of course he's not good, that's why he's not the starter. He knows Kyle Shanahan's offense and can help teach it to the rest of the team during the training camps. And if McNabb goes down, they can choose to put in Grossman and he'll at least run the plays, or they can put in whichever more talented backup they have on the roster. Is this really such a difficult concept?

So, I called the Caps "chokers" and they got lucky and won, everybody bit my head off.

Boudreau pretty much called them the same thing the last two games. Maybe he hates them, too.

I feel like everybody is slamming the Redskins repeatedly on here, "Boycott Snyder," blah blah blah, but they have won more than any other team in the area, By FAR.

But, never, ever, EVER, criticize the Caps, no matter HOW many times they look great and Choke in the playoffs.

It used to be they could beat anybody but Pittsburgh. Now, looks like they might have figured Pittsburgh out...

And things are not looking good, that's all I'm saying.

because sometimes, to the untrained eye, it seems they choke - especially in game 7s - at home. (talking about this coming Wednesday Night vs. Montreal).

about the Free Safety position, I have a little hope for Chris Horton. He's not gonna blow anybody up, but he'll play the ball.

He was not expected to be the next Sean Taylor and he's not. Never will be. Not his game.

By the way, a Sean Taylor comes along a few times in a lifetime, and a GREAT Free Safety helps your Defense a LOT. I like Reed's game in Baltimore, but he's not a hitter. I LOVE Polamalu, but he's not going anywhere. Bob Sanders for Indy is great.

To me, Dawkins was always overrated.

Lynch, to me, was excellent. Smart. Play run and pass and F up rarely. Elevates the Defense to the point where it's indecipherable.

THAT'S what Sean Taylor did for us. Changed the game. Receivers were dropping balls. Running backs were intimidated.

We'll be hurting there next year. There's nobody out there who's gonna do what we expect to see. Horton can play the ball in the air. Doughty is a pretty sure tackler. There just aren't a lot of Sean Taylors on the street looking for work.

You cant take Fred Smoot or Justin Tryon or even Reed Doughty and expect them to pick off every deep pass and clothesline every RB and QB that crosses the line of scrimmage. We're better off with a vicious D Line until the next great one comes out.

Unfortunately.

I heard somewhere that world class sprinters can't really be measured against these type of guys. The sprinters make up the times in the later parts of the runs where their momentum helps them with the speed. I heard that the sprinters would have about the same splits. I could be wrong but seems to me I remember somethinf like this a while ago.

Posted by: scampbell1975

Pretty much.

100 meters is a lot farther to maintain that sort of speed.

I've seen some fans quoting some crazy 40 times. And none of it really matters if a player is slow to react to what's going on on the field.

Posted by: lordtwang | April 27, 2010 1:36 AM | Report abuse

I played FS, by the way. It's the most free position on the Defense. After an INT, watch the play action. They try to bait you. If you're constantly coming up on the run, same thing.

Most of my INTs I got after sacks vs the option. The opposing coach thinks you're selling out on the run. But, if you're not, if you're playing the D the right way, HE'S the one that's selling out, and you're taking 6 the other way.

Imagine a QB on your Defense. THAT'S your Free Safety. Whatever they do, Stop it. Run, Pass, play action. Stop it. Make them pay.

They'll bait you. They'll try to block you. They'll try to trick you. Try to put you to sleep.

That's why I say it's all about intelligence. That, and the right (vicious, nasty, violent) attitude, along with a nice range (either through vertical leap OR speed) will make things very difficult for the opposing QB.

Your job is to make his impossible. Not difficult. Impossible. Shut him down. Not as easy as it sounds.

Need a guy that will watch lots of film. Love to be that guy. A guy who will salivate thinking about an opposing teams bread and butter - whether it's a sweep or a 5 yard hitch. Need a "mental" player who loves the idea that the O Coordinator is stumped.

If you miss a tackle, they win. They got you. Can't let that happen. If they complete a ten yard pass for a 1st down, you lose. 3rd and 8 should be in your pocket, but remember, don't let the WR on the opposite side get deep one on one.

It aint easy.
Taylor had football smarts.
Yes, he was a hitter.
Yes, he was a gifted athlete.

But you don't do what he did by being a stupid athlete. There was a very clear method to his madness and it's been missing ever since.

Landry can't do it. Misses tackles. He's loading up too much. Because he's not a natural assassin like Taylor was.

Every year, there are a few great Free Safeties. This year, we wont have one. You can win without it, against so-so QBs, but you'll never beat the Peyton Mannings with a knock off. Not unless they can't stop your O.

but, I digress. Caps better not fking choke on Wednesday. If they do, I will never buy another overpriced hotdog at a Caps game again!

Posted by: Thinker_ | April 27, 2010 1:58 AM | Report abuse

lordtwang, you got it right.

My own position coach would ask me, during film, WHY am I getting to the QB before the LBs.

I would reply, "I don't know what they're looking at"

If you have a 3.0 mind, you get a few steps lead on that guy with a 4.3 40 time.

40 times are overrated. They DO matter, but they don't explain why Jim Brown was a beast and Trung Canidate was a bust.

Posted by: Thinker_ | April 27, 2010 2:02 AM | Report abuse

And I've seen guys - track guys - start over real football players. Coaches are in love with speed. When it's coupled with football knowledge, instincts, skill, who can blame them?

But when you take some fagit [sic] who runs a nice 100 yd dash and try to turn him into a WR, you deserve to be embarrassed, as I have personally witnessed.

A guy in our conference was a sprinter. Looked awesome-scary sprinting. Perfect form. Shoulders, elbows, knees... the guy had trained with Carl Lewis in Houston. Looked GREAT in a football Uni, running.

They tried him on a reverse. I felt like I was hitting a girl. Not because he was soft, which he was, but because he didn't know how to TAKE a hit. Roll with it? Like when you get hit by a wave at the beach?

He got toppled. Painfully. Like a gazelle getting swiped by a lioness. (kinda like Michael Westbrook used to do - I told everybody he would get hurt, by the way - never knew how to go down softly) Anyway, his head hit the ground first, if that's any indication. On a reverse. Behind the line of scrimmage. Not even a dive toward the line. Just watched me coming and never broke stride. Like laying out an old lady.

Next, they tried a desperation bomb to him a few series later. I was beaten. Beat me by a good 2 steps. He turned, the ball bounced straight off his facemask and I drilled him. I knew he had missed the ball, but I wanted to send a message. Helmet to solar plexus. Gasping for air, writhing on the ground.

Later that year he quit football to concentrate on track. How many freshmen started on his college team? Not many, you can bet. But he did. And he stunk.

Speed kills.

The coaching staff was fired the next year. All of them, let go. Sean Taylor had speed, but he had a lot of things that were much more important. Take 3 feet off of every sprint and what do you have? Exactly. Sean Fking Taylor. Still dominating. Still picking off passes. Still tearing RB's heads off.

Speed is nice, but over-rated.
Where's the test for the mind?

How many could jump higher than MJ? Lots.

How many could out jump Larry Bird? Lots.

How many could out-benchpress Dexter Manley?

How fast was John Riggins? OK, but that wasn't his game.

Look at "Larry Brown Redskins" on Youtube and you'll see how to measure heart. Take a look and imagine players today doing that. Their agent would pull them out of the game.

I'm not sure if anyone up here heard Chris Cooley on Jim Rome yesterday, but I loved what I heard...I can usually tell when a guy is just giving lip service and when he's genuinely amped and Cooley sounds pretty amped about playing for Shanahan and playing with McNabb. Something tells me this team could see an emotional lift and improve just by having those two guys with the organization.

Here's hoping...

2ndtier, if guys like MeAngelo keep writing checks with their mouths that their bodies can't cash, then that 6-10 mark may not be so wrong after all.

Obviously, I hope he's calling his shot correctly, but for this team in this season, anything over 8 wins should be considered gravy.

There were 39 guys drafted who weren't at the NFL combine.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/04/25/39-players-drafted-who-were-not-at-the-combine/

The Redskins drafted two of them, Dennis Morris and Terrence Austin. That's what it means to have a good scouting department, one that finds talent. Assuming, of course, that these guys actually have an impact in the NFL. Otherwise, we can just blame Vinny.

Be interesting to see whether Allen retains the talent evaluation group that Vinny puts together.

Posted by: 2ndtierfan | April 27, 2010 5:57 AM |

I'm going with Brownwood on this one. McNabb and Shanahan together would have gotten the Redskins six more wins last year and made them 10-4. You may have forgotten how close they were in most of their losses, but with good coaching they could have beaten San Diego, New Orleans, Carolina, Dallas, Kansas City, and Detroit.

They've got a tougher schedule this year than last, but they've also improved their roster and coaching a lot more than just McNabb and Shanahan. If you can't see six wins, then just ask your seeing-eye dog how many wins he sees.

Posted by: League-Source | April 27, 2010 6:10 AM | Report abuse

2ndtier, I understand the skepticism, I really do...I just feel that the McNabb/Shanahan upgrade alone wins us an additional 4 games. While I believe the defense will take a step back, I also think the offense will be much improved. IMO, 6 games would be a huge disappointment.

Oops sorry went to the Beep.
However, those four wins are coming from beating which teams? Split the division? I doubt it.

Landy at Strong Safety = Pro Bowl.

But who is going to play Free Safety [i.e. Sean Taylor's position]?

Landry played SS his first year and people were comparing him to Ronnie Lott. Now Shanny is going to put him back in the position that got him to the NFL in the first place... go figure. A coach letting you play the position that you are best suited for.
