Rookie LB Perry Riley likes the 3-4

Rookie linebacker Perry Riley played in a 4-3 at LSU, where he was a two-year starter and recorded 185 total career tackles en route to becoming the Redskins' fourth-round draft pick this year.

Here in Washington, Riley is among the many players adjusting to the new 3-4 scheme. The rookie says he has enjoyed the process - and the defense.

"I like the 3-4 a little more, to be truthful with you," Riley said. "I think it allows me to roam around a little more. To have a big nose tackle in front of me, two big defensive ends to keep the o-line off me so I'm able to roam free. So I like it a little better than I did the 4-3."

Riley played weak side linebacker at LSU but is expected to play inside in the 3-4, which means he is learning behind the Redskins defensive leader, Pro Bowl linebacker London Fletcher. It's an opportunity Riley said he didn't fully grasp until he saw Fletcher live.

"That's a great player," Riley said. "I always knew he was good growing up watching him but I never knew how good he was until I've actually seen him in person. The things he do...I see him do it and it looks so easy when he do it, but when I try it don't work as well."

Riley said that because everyone, including veterans, is learning the defense, the transition to the pro level has been a little easier for him. But he is still adjusting to the speed of play and the tricks that veteran offensive players have shown during OTAs and minicamp.

The rookie learning curve is expected, but Riley said that has not kept new defensive coordinator Jim Haslett from staying on top of him this offseason.

"He is an intense guy," Riley said. "He'll get on you if you mess up. Trust me, I know. But I need that. I'm a rookie. I need someone to stay on me, push me and make me want to study at night so I can come out here and get it right on the field."

The kid at least has the right attitude. I get what you are saying about a deficiency at ILB. I see it getting crowded outside, so what do you think about moving one of those guys - maybe Chris Wilson - to the interior?

Fletch, McIntosh, Blades, Henson, and Riley at ILB. That position has more than enough depth. No need to transition a OLB/DE to ILB.

"We will draft a QB high next season."Posted by: iH8dallas

You may be right. There are four QBs who look like strong candidates for round 1: Mallett, Locker, Luck, and Gabbert, possibly in that order. Then there's Christian Ponder and Pat Devlin very close behind them. For fans of undersized system QBs, there's Houston's Case Keenum, and for people who think Tim Tebow will be a good NFL QB, there's Terrelle Pryor. And two or three semi-knowns behind them, at least one of whom should go in the third or fourth round. It's a lot better class for QBs than either of the last two. And the Skins could get a good one even if they finish pretty well this season.

Posted by: Samson151 | June 24, 2010 12:11 PM | Report abuse

This list is pretty deceiving for next years first round. First off only one of your top 4 is a senior, Jake Locker, although ponder is also a senior as are Devlin and Keenum. After that that Mallet and Gabbert and Pryor are still juniors. And if by Luck you mean Andrew Luck, Oliver Lucks kid well he is a Sophomore and cant even come out next year. I may be confusing names though.

But all told im not sure how great or deep of a QB class this will be. Jake Locker should be a must have im not sure how many others after that.

See Fat Al...Perry Riley likes it. The skins could sell fat al on the idea that he will be moved around constantly and will still be part of 4-3 sets. In short, Ole Fatty may change his mind in training camp.

The thought is McIntosh is not big/durable enough, Henson is a special teams expert with not enough LB experience, and Riley is an unknown commodity. I am not saying this is a terrible situation because I am sure Mac can play inside, but just wonder if maybe it would make sense to move Wilson inside. He's probably the fastest of the OLB's and that would make him the first choice to move inside...

"I may catch some heat for this but really, if the 'Skins kept Pat Ramsey, they could have had a pretty solid QB."

This begs the following question:

Which quarterback did the skins abandon too early and not try to retain?

pick'em:

Trent Green

Gus Ferotte

Jeff George

Pat Ramsey

Rich Gannon

Jason Campbell

Brad Johnson

Moe roles with Brad Johnson, the last dude to put up outstanding numbers at the quarterback position for the Washington Reedskins.

No need to re-hash Johnson's plight in D.C., but had dude been retained, we'd be having a whole other conversation right now about redskin quarterbacks.

I think we have plenty of LB talent, just need to figure out the rolls for each guy.
We have 3 or 4 "Jack" OLB's in Carter,KpO,Jarmon and Alexander of the four Orakpo seems best suited to be the Sam for now, better movement and possibly best of the 4 in coverage. I don't know if we have a guy yet that can fill that more dynamic OLB roll.

Inside, McIntosh is probably the cover ILB and Fletcher is the run stopping ILB, just a guess. Everyone else is a backup.

BTW I really am looking forward to seeing Hasletts creativity with this group.

Older men scam

Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in
dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I
wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it.

A 'heads up' for those men who may be regular customers at Lowe's, Home
Depot, Costco, or even Wal-Mart. This one caught me totally by surprise.
Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping.
Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't
be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends.

Here's how the scam works:

Two nice-looking, college-aged girls will come over to your car or truck as
you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping
your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out
of their skimpy T-shirts. (It's impossible not to look).
When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' but instead ask for
a ride to McDonald's.

You agree and they climb into the vehicle. On the way, they start
undressing. Then one of them starts crawling all over you, while the other
one steals your wallet.

I had my wallet stolen Mar. 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th,
24th, & 29th. Also Apr. 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd, 26th &
27th, and very likely again this upcoming weekend.

So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of
us older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant.

Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for
$.99 at the dollar store and bought them out in three of their stores.

Also, you never get to eat at McDonald's. I've already lost 11 pounds just
running back and forth from Lowe's, to Home Depot, to Costco, Etc.

So please, send this on to all the older men that you know and warn them to
be on the lookout for this scam. (The best times are just before lunch and
around 4:30 in the afternoon.)

Woman tied to Dr. Galea will plead guilty

Posted by Michael David Smith on June 24, 2010 2:06 PM ET
A woman at the center of the investigation into Dr. Anthony Galea, who has been accused of giving performance-enhancing drugs to Redskins receiver Santana Moss and other athletes, has agreed to plead guilty to making false statements to federal agents.

The New York Daily News reports that Mary Anne Catalano, the Canadian woman whose arrest at the border last year led to federal scrutiny into Galea, will plead guilty this afternoon. Smuggling charges against Catalano, who is reportedly cooperating with investigators, have been dropped.

The Catalano case is the latest example of the way the government goes after people connected to performance-enhancing substances not by prosecuting them for possession, but by prosecuting them for lying about it. The athletes tied to BALCO have similarly been prosecuted for lying to investigators and grand juries, rather than for possession of controlled substances.

Catalano was caught crossing the border with human growth hormone in her car in September. She first claimed she was bringing Galea the substance for a demonstration at a medical conference but later reportedly told investigators Galea was going to use the HGH on Moss.

TO all who are convinced that the skins need to draft a first round QB next year I present a very rough draft list of other teams that may be thinking that as well. But lets face it, we will probably see 3-5 teams hunting for the next star QB in the draft like always.

Arizona Cardinals- No proof Matt is going to be any better than he was.

Buffalo Bills- They have not had a good QB for years.

Cleveland Browns- Do I need to explain?

Denver Broncos- My wildcard, but coach McD could pull a Zorn next year. I have no faith that Tebow is a NFL QB.

Indianapolis Colts- Payton is getting older and in 2-3 seasons could be in a Favre/Roggers situation, Manning is 34, I think Brett was 35 or 36 when Aaron Rogers was drafted.

Jacksonville Jaguars- If David Gerrard cant cut it.

Minnesota Vikings- Brett is not going to be playing in 2013 is he?

Oakland Raiders- Do you think, regardless of success or failure Campbell will be a raider for more than a year?

Philadelphia Eagles- depends on Kolb

San Francisco 49ers- I know they say they are sticking with Alex Smith, but he is far from a Franchise QB.

Seattle Seahawks- Some would claim that the Seahawks have their QB of the Future, I would not.

"And if by Luck you mean Andrew Luck, Oliver Lucks kid well he is a Sophomore and cant even come out next year."

Well, Andrew didn't play in '08, started in '09, and will have completed the '10 season prior to next year's draft, right? That's the required 3 seasons from HS. He's quite the scholar so he's unlikely to be suspended for grades. Most folks expect him to come out and if he has a good year, to be a high pick. He's a big kid, very accurate with his passing, and apparently very quick at picking up the offense, so a team that appreciates a brainy QB will be interested.

By the way, Luck was born in DC and raised in London and Frankfurt when his father was a World League GM.

As to the other QBs you mentioned, you're probably referring to the widespread belief that QBs who come out as underclassmen struggle more than those who complete their senior season. That was Pete Carroll's complain about Mark Sanchez (although Pete may have had other motives). With redshirting, I'm not sure that has merit. A guy like Ryan Mallett will be 23 in June of next year, and that's old enough to play in the NFL.

"TO all who are convinced that the skins need to draft a first round QB next year I present a very rough draft list of other teams that may be thinking that as well. But lets face it, we will probably see 3-5 teams hunting for the next star QB in the draft like always."

So here are some more candidates in addition to the ones I already mentioned:

Ricky Stanzi, Iowa -- has the arm but is very much a gambler. Some teams don't like that.
Colin Kaepernik, Nevada -- tall guy with average arm, thrives in a system.
Andy Dalton, TCU -- much improved, leads a strong club.
Kevin Riley, California -- good in that very quick Tedford offense. Depends on whether people remember Aaron Rodgers or Kyle Boller.
Nathan Enderle, Idaho
Greg McElroy, Alabama

Locker is probably the best in the bunch, but I'm hoping that the redskins will be too far down in the draft order to be able to get him. If we're that high in the draft, that would mean that the improvement we're expecting this year didn't happen.

Washington Wizards supposedly to get Josh Childress, Kirk Hinrich, and the #17 overall pick to pair with John Wall and the #30 and #35 overall picks we previously had -- all for the price of a ham sandwich.

Could we have a lineup like this next year?

Wall
Arenas
Childress
Blatche
McGee

Hinrich
Young
Miller
#17 (big man)
#30 (big man)
#35 (big man)
Singleton
Foye

Just look at that roster compared to what we started with last year. Man, when Washington teams rebuild, they pull out all the stops as of late.

Hollywood is working on a sequel to Repo Man where the storyline is how the Man repos all of AH's toys - powerboats, ATVs, Ferraris, etc. Of course it would have to star a buff Shia LaBeouf as Repo Man and it would be nice if they oould figure out a way to work Rude Dick into the film.

Arenas does have talent but with the a new owner coming on board you would think his preference would be to shed baggage, even if you can't get anything of value in return. Legally speaking there must be some way to void his contract. He was convicted of a felony and spent some time in jail. Surely that would be grounds for voidance.

I think Mark Moseley of ESPN.com is schmuck who is so far up Dallas ass that he can't see much else in the division. But I gotta say, dude is dead on with this:

"The bottom line is that Haynesworth and Shanahan won't be able to function together in Washington. The coach can't afford for any of his new players to have the perception that Haynesworth won this standoff. And that's why Haynesworth's announcement that he intended to show up for training camp meant nothing.

If the Redskins haven't traded or released Haynesworth by that time, I think they'll ask him to stay home. The time for healing or compromise has passed. In reality, Haynesworth hasn't been on this team since March.

Soon, it will become official."

Two Points

1st thing Riley is a rookie drafted player, they buy into the team more. That's why you don't run out a sign "big time" free agents" They're mercenaries.

2thing-remember Lavar Arrington's career here. First, with M.Shottenheimer, LA was a weakside LB, then with Spurrier/M.Lewis he was a strongside LB, then he was a weakside LB, who rushed from a strongside end position. K. Shottenheimer had him rush on passing downs, M. Lewis had him covering TEs.

The constant changes helped keep his brains scrambled and Arrington would occasionally grouse about it.Though Arrington made the Pro Bowl, imagine if he were allowed to settle in a one linebacker spot-how many more would he have made before injury?

So yeah, AH, should do what the team asks, but if he used Lavar Arrington's all-too-brief career with the Skins' as an example of why he's doing what he is, I would understand.
