Rogers in no rush to sign contract [UPDATED]

With linebacker Rocky McIntosh signing his tender offer Monday, cornerback Carlos Rogers is the Redskins' only unsigned restricted free agent.

Apparently, however, Rogers is in no rush to sign the one-year, $1.542-million contract the team offered in March. "Nah," Rogers responded to my text message Monday afternoon about whether he plans to sign soon.

**Cornerback Carlos Rogers confirmed via text message that he will sign his one-year, $1.54 million tender offer and practice, for the start of training camp, on Thursday.

After initially expressing frustration about not receiving a multi-year offer from the Redskins, Rogers has said all the right things for the past few months. He has praised Coach Mike Shanahan for bringing professionalism to the organization and expressed excitement about his role in defensive coordinator Jim Haslett's aggressive new 3-4 scheme.

Rogers even signed a waiver to participate in the voluntary off-season program, including minicamps and organized team activities. But he has been evasive when asked about his contract situation, saying his agent plans to speak with General Manager Bruce Allen about "some things."

Because of the type of tender Rogers received, he has more time to sign than McIntosh, who faced a Tuesday deadline to sign. Rogers must sign by the 10th week of the league season in order to play. He is expected to start opposite to corner DeAngelo Hall.

Maybe he's hoping he can hang on to a few interceptions in camp and they'll make him a better offer.

Posted by: kaasmaster | June 14, 2010 6:25 PM | Report abuse

No rush to get him in, he's signed waivers to practice. I guess he's waiting for a better offer that will only come if there's an injury elsewhere. If I were him I'd probably do the same thing but I would have danm sure caught that ball in Seattle.

He's also the best pure cover corner we had last year, unfortunately, in my opinion. I don't think DHall's man-to-man skills are quite up to the skills of CR, and I doubt Phillip Buchanon has the skills of CR (although I haven't really watched much of him). So, we need this guy this year, and he needs to be in the proper frame of mind.

I don't know, but I'd have more faith in Tryon than Barnes simply b/c Darrell Green vouched for him. I don't think I'd really want a playoff sport resting on either of their shoulders, though.

F Carlos Rogers. He should be chomping at the bit to get in here and play in a real defense that will allow him to make more plays, and in turn, make himself more money. That is, of course, if he's finally exchanged the salad tongs he's been using for actual hands with opposable thumbs...

Seriously, he has to talk to Bruce Allen about "some things"? Really? If I were Bruce Allen, the only discussion I'd have with that a$shat is to find out what the hell he's doing to correct his inability to catch a damn football and defend the double move. Heaven forbid you go out there and actually EARN your money. F*ckwit...

I find the whole Carlos Rogers not signing his tender thing a little silly. He's not going to get paid more than his tender this year because the team won't let him go and they won't give him a contract. He's even working out, so what little leverage he had there is gone, too. This is kind of like Monty Python's Holy Grail where the Trojan rabbit has already been sent in the fort and then the knight reveals that they should all hide inside.

brown, RE: Mankins

I think the Patriots would want multiple picks for the dude, I wouldn't be surprised if they were asking for at least a 2nd and a 5th.

But it was a scenario that had me thinking: 'should they pursue?'

Do the 'Skins have any picks already belonging to another team in 2011?

I read in the McIntosh blurb that the Redskins cut two players. Where do they stand with the number of players on the roster? Aren't they a few short of the league maximum? My crystal ball sees another wide receiver signing forthcoming...

Surprised to see they cut a kicker this early. They must be pretty happy with Gano. He's great on kickoffs and that probably sold the team on him.

There might be a conditional on McN. Like if he makes the Pro Bowl we owe the Eegs a 4th rounder which becomes a 3rd rounder if the Skins make the playoffs and get to the conference championship. So far, except for McN, the Skins seem to have avoided the trap of either paying $$$ or coughing up picks for dudes with tread wear. McN was kind of the lesser of various evils they had to choose from - they weren't going to go through another season with Campbell, they weren't going to get Bradford in the draft, etc.

I understand guys wanting to make as much as they can, but for Carlos to complain about making a mil and a half for one year is utterly rediculous.

Dude might get 2 mil if he's lucky on the open market, but he ain't all of that. This is what kills me about professional players these days.

If I recall correctly, Fred Smoot thought the same thing and next thing you know he's on the "Loooveeee Boooattt" something exciting and new.....

We will be drafting another player for the secondary next yr. Tryon is too small for the physical nfc east recievers. Barnes is a solid hitting prospect but well have to see how he develops.

Dude isn't worth anything near the $1.5 million tender he was offered and based on his play to date, there is certainly no reason whatsoever to sign him to a multi-year deal, especially in the face of an expected lock out or walk out in 201. I'm hoping he don't sign his tender... or play... the worthless POS.

Posted by: Vic1 | June 14, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

With regard to the discussion about the team not signing Rocky or Carlos to long term deals, perhaps the new regime simply wants to evaluate all the RFA's in their new schemes before giving them long term deals, regardless of how the contracts and salaries are structured. Seems pretty reasonable to me. Evaluate them in the new systems first before you're contractually married to them for years.

No, No weigh in per se. Instead a team from cal tech, Biologists, tectonic plate shift experts and Geologists will use the same techniques used to determind the orbital shift of Planet Earth after the Chilean Earthquake.

While not approved by various science labs, the technique has proven valuable and accurate in the past.

cork,
pretty amazing how they can detect slight changes in the earth's gravitational field resulting from albert's relocation from south carolina.

all:
http://blogs.fredericksburg.com/redskinsjournal/2010/03/22/albert-haynesworth-speaks-about-the-3-4-offseason-workouts/

question:
"Do you think that there would come a situation where maybe you wouldn’t be a good fit for the Redskins?"

Haynesworth: “Well, I don’t want to really say that. I mean, we’ve got a good coach and all that stuff. I’m just going to be, whatever they ask me to do, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m not going to be a distraction or anything so I’m just going to do what they ask me to do.”

sounds good. this kind of stuff is ALL we've heard from albert, yet to hear RI reporters tell it, you'd think he's saying exactly the opposite.

For restricted free agents, from March 5 to April 15. For unrestricted free agents who have received the June 1 tender from their prior Club, from March 5 to July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). For franchise players, from March 5 until the Tuesday after the 10th week of the regular-season (Nov. 16). If he does not sign by Nov. 16, he must sit out the season. There are no transition player designations this year.

Just read this and I've got to say what a sh!t stirrer that Rich Gannon is. I can see why the Raiders didn't want him around the team. Acting like he knows defensive linemen and what guys should be playing where. He may know more than you and I but that ain't saying much seeing as he's a football player. Gaither already resigned, so that ain't happening, and I don't think the front office is looking for a big ticket FS at this point. We've heard zilch about any possible visits around him. Plus, we've got some youth there that may pan out for us.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

That's crap, sorry. A well paid corner is responsible for tackling, covering, AND creating turnovers. CR's often-discussed brick hands show a glaring flaw in his skills. He's got JUST enough concentration to swat a ball away, but not enough to follow a ball into his hands. Apparently he can't concentrate long enough to see that his situation with his contract won't improve and he's making himself look like a whiny fool for any teams that may take a look at him in next year's FA period. He's demonstrating to future potential employers that they will have to deal with his faux diva behavior. At least he's been in practices...smartest move he made this off-season.
I don't see Shanahan keeping CR after this year after this stunt unless he has an amazing year.

BTW...just read that Logan Mankins of the Pats is pissed about his contract and wants a trade. He's a 28 year-old Pro Bowler who appears to have a good amount of tread on the tires. I'd love to see the Skins look into what it would cost to take him off New England's hands...

Posted by: brownwood26 | June 14, 2010 6:58 PM
------------------------------------------------
Not sure we need an $8 million per year guard right now. He's pissed at being offered ONLY $7 million/yr and is demanding a trade over this. No thanks.

Also brownwood, your earlier post that discussed CR's salad tong hands freakin' really made me laugh hard. Great imagery!

Posted by: DC2AZ99 | June 15, 2010 3:47 AM | Report abuse

I think the Patriots would want multiple picks for the dude, I wouldn't be surprised if they were asking for at least a 2nd and a 5th.

But it was a scenario that had me thinking: 'should they pursue?'

Do the 'Skins have any picks already belonging to another team in 2011?

Posted by: RedDMV | June 14, 2010 7:35 PM

Red, I doubt they would ask for that level of compensation, simply because they've got no leverage in a trade. That situation has gotten ugly in a hurry and I think if they deal him (and that's IF) it'll be for something closer to a 3rd rounder. In which case, I'd think that's worth exploring.

We have a full complement of picks with the exception of a 3rd or 4th rounder from the McNabb deal so we've got some picks to play with, although I'd be glad to see a year where we actually have picks in EVERY round. I'm more pressed to see us get a tackle, but we're not so set at guard that we can't do some due diligence if a Pro-Bowl caliber guy comes available.

I doubt anything happens on this front, but I'm sure the Skins will at least be rumored as an interested team if the Pats put him on the block.

You're welcome, my friend. I can't take full credit though...I seem to remember someone on the radio (Steve Czaban, I think) using that same joke in reference to Brendan Haywood's inability to catch the ball in the post several years back. It's been in my repertoire ever since.

Regarding Mankins, like I said above, I think he's too good a player to ignore completely. It doesn't hurt to place a call and see what the Pats would be thinking in terms of compensation. I wouldn't give up more than a 3rd or 4th rounder for the guy, especially not for a 28 year-old lineman. I'm more anxious to see us get tackle help than guard, but I'm not so happy with the guards that I would stop looking for upgrades.

Lord Belichick knows when to release a player in order to get good value in return. Save the draft picks…Someone as good or better will come along.

I hear ya cf...just sayin' I wouldn't mind seeing us make an inquiry. I have a sneaking suspicion that our line will be better than people think. The scheme change alone should ensure that we won't see the shibacle of last year.

Offer someone to the Patriots in a trade for Logan Mankins, their disgruntled pro-bowl guard, but no draft picks.

I think our line is going to be pretty good to…I would like to see what falls out during preseason cuts. Could be some surprises and opportunity to strengthen the line.

Posted by: campfodder | June 15, 2010 6:11 AM | Report abuse

Right cf...I'm banking on it.

G4P, I don't think we have anyone that the Pats could use that would be worth their while. I mean, I could see us dealing Rocky Mac, Haynesworth, and one (or both) of the 2nd round WRs...but even if we lumped all those guys together they don't add up to Mankins (at least not to the Pats). Belichick may or may not still be the "genius" everyone thinks, but he's not retarded enough to take guys that are obvious spare parts here to placate a disgruntled player. He'll deal him only if it helps the Pats in the long run.

Interesting part of the John Clayton mailbag on ESPN.com:
-----------------------------------
Q: I would like to add my opinion(s) to this ongoing debate about elite quarterbacks. I like Joe Flacco and some other quarterbacks that you consider elite, but the problem I have is when the elite status is granted. Your criteria is great, but you didn't include consistency and/or longevity in it. I think elite status should be given after an extended period of time.

Maurice in Merrillville, Ind.

A: Your point is well taken, but sometimes it doesn't take a lot of time to determine that a very good quarterback is elite. I had Jay Cutler as an elite quarterback after the 2008 season, when he threw for more than 4,500 yards, but removed that status last season. I didn't give Matt Schaub elite status until last season, when he threw for 4,770 yards. I guess the criticism is more in regard to Flacco and Matt Ryan, but in my eyes, it was clear that these two were elite even as rookies. Sometimes, you have to make a projection. Once you saw the class of 2004 -- Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning and Philip Rivers -- start to perform, it wasn't long before you could project them as budding elite quarterbacks.
-------------------------------------------

I like Clayton and think he's one of the few talking heads that knows what the hell he's talking about. But he's retarded on this topic. Elite status is given to guys who get it done consistently--not just in a given year, but year in and year out. Adding the likes of Matt Schaub and Jay Cutler to the list of the elite is premature at best. And then to say you can take guys on and off the list? Are you kidding me? Seems to me, if you're an elite QB that's not something subject to change on a year-to-year basis.

But hey...that's just me...

My first thought for the trade would be Clinton Portis for Logan Mankins. But at this point, I'm reluctant to let CP go, well, just because he's too valuable right now. I love the potential of him playing with Shanny again. As for tackle help, we got good unsigned vets out there- Flozell Adams and Levi Jones.

All in all, Rogers isn't a bad corner. I don't think Blache's defensive schemes were that good. I think they were too conservative and let's face it, the Skins D Line didn't put consistent pressure on any QB. I think Haslett will have everyone playing better and hopefully Rogers can learn how to catch something other than a cold during training camp.
