A New Thread, Just Cuz We Needed It

Got some emails from people compaining, rightfully so, about having a 1300-comment post.

Sorry to neglect the blog for few days but we've had a death in the family and I am going to need some time to be with Lauren and the kids. I'm going to miss mini camp this weekend and won't be back much, really, until after Mothers Day or so. Things will be very quiet again most of May, anyway, until OTAs really kick in during June. (And even then it's not a very news-heavy time).

In the meantime I know my homeboy Jason Reid will be on top of things.

Again, sorry I did not have a chance to get something new up here sooner, and sorry I can't stay longer.

Cheers.

No disrespect intended, but I know Jasno doesn't read down here, so I will pick up from the previous one ...

4th, from that interview with Jason Campbell in the other people (about how he liked the second round picks ... how could he not?). There was one line that apparently got edited out ... I re-insert it at the end in brackets:

"Campbell was joined by several teammates, including Chris Cooley, Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, Fred Smoot, Carlos Rogers, Kedric Golston, Todd Yoder, Ryan Boschetti, Antwaan Randle El, Derrick Frost, Sam Hollenbach, Vernon Fox, Reed Doughty, Leigh Torrence, Shaun Suisham and Rock Cartwright. Darrell Green was in Campbell's group.

Before teeing off, Campbell gave the thumbs up to the drafting of Devin Thomas, Fred Davis and Malcolm Kelly last weekend. [Shortly after Campbell teed off, Derrick Frost stepped up to the tee and gave the thumbs down to drafting Brooks Durant last weekend.]

Jason, I am sorry to hear about your loss. My best wishes to you and your family. May God comfort you all. Football and this blog can wait.

Posted by: M | April 30, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

Sween, you left out the other part from that article. I'll add it to what you posted, again in brackets.

"Before teeing off, Campbell gave the thumbs up to the drafting of Devin Thomas, Fred Davis and Malcolm Kelly last weekend. Shortly after Campbell teed off, Derrick Frost stepped up to the tee and gave the thumbs down to drafting Brooks Durant last weekend. [Derrick then proceeded to shank his shots repeatedly left and right, hitting the ball with the "shaft" portion of the golf club rather than the "club" portion of the golf club.

Not news-heavy, agreed ... but it is the start of ridicularity, like the Mottram's nugget about Rabach's nuggets, Smoot giving new meaning to the terms jibba and/or jabba, hijinks, maps, such as ...

My apologies to Old School about long winded posts; keep 'em coming.

Can someone please water me? It's getting awfully hot in this window.

I get a free moment from a blistering day of work (admittedly, that sounds odd) and, by the time I get to come back, the blog is in mourning. Well, it is nice to see anyway. I know his mother-in-law has been sick for a long time ... still, it creates some perspective.

Anyway, in the previous thread, there was some chatter about people "concerned" about Zorn and Blache (pronounced 'blosh'), aka "Blanche", esp. the significance of the post-Grilliams defense.

I'm not so worried about the D. Blache is himself a former defensive coordinator ... for the Bears ... when they were on the rise on D ... and he was the deputy Grilliams anyway. On the link that someone provided to the "process v. results" take on the Skins draft, the point was that not building the D through the draft has not hurt the Skins' D to date. The link made a point about how the last time the Skins used a top pick on the D line, it was Kennard Lang. My takeaway was the Coach Blache will make do with what he has available to him on the line.

Same thing with Joe Bugel ... under Gibbs, he was ostensibly the "O-line Coach" (on paper, he was Assistant Head Coach - Offense), but he himself is a former head coach. Frankly, its those two guys underneath Zorn that makes me less concerned about performance.

I do have a sense that the buzzwords "continuity" is going to be out the window by the time of the cut down to 55 guys. Like P Diddy said when The Owner was throwing around the term, I suspect a fairly significant roster turnover ... maybe not the starters, but at least in depth. Among the starters, the days are already numbered for this past season's starting punter.

Posted by: dcsween | April 30, 2008 5:19 PM | Report abuse

Also, not sure if he said it up here or in earlier blog nights out, but Jasno has opined that the Bears had become sort of a model for how Grilliams (and other D coordinators around the league) were building their defenses.

[I'm guessing that has since stopped ... after they acquired Archuleta. Remember how it was the Bears who coveted Archuleta before the Skins signed him?]

The subjects are Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, two talented quarterbacks under the age of 25. The problem is only one can sit in the cockpit of one of the NFL's most exciting offenses, which includes Pro Bowlers Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow and a stellar offensive line.

-espn.com

--------------------------

I like the part about the "stellar offensive line."

When will the Redskins be able to make that claim again?

Just sayin'!

Chia Pet, I had a chia head once. I remember having to soak the seeds, and it made some kind of messy goo for spreading. Once it grew, the chia hair looked like it might be good on a salad. Chia, the Browns line is like the Skins line, only younger. The new guy from Wisconsin is their Chris Samuels. Eric Steinbach (former Cincy franchise tag) is their Thomas. Hank Fraley is their Rabach (as if anyone other than Rabach could be Rabach), with LeCharles Bentley (former Saints Pro-Bowl center) waiting in the wings if he is ever able to walk again (knee surgeons called a staph meeting, which was well attended). Kevin Schaeffer (formerly Falcons' Jansen) is their Jansen. Only the other guard (Ryan Tucker) is entering his 12th year ... after not missing a game in that time period.

A solid offensive line can make a bad QB look good and an average QB look great.

Posted by: dcsween | April 30, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

I was wondering...there is a very solid olineman available in free agency It would be a great addition...(and potential starter @ RT) Shane Olivea from the san diego chargers. He got cut this off season because he didnt play up to his previous levels (maybe he didnt fit into Norv Turners offense). Anywho he had started a bunch of games for them since he got drafted and he is still relatively young. I think he would be a great addition.

Sween

Sounds like you took good care of your Chia.

This isn't about instant gratification. If that were the case, your Chia would have come with sprouts straight out of the box.

What really gets my goat is when people complain about the lack of greenery on their Chia, yet don't take proper care of him/her.

Do you have any idea of the number of disowned, discarded Chia's out there today?

Process is where it's at, in this and many other respects.

Posted by: Chia Pet | April 30, 2008 5:33 PM | Report abuse

Browns depth on the O-line is solid also, including former Skin, Lennie Friedman ... I guess he would be their Todd Wade ...

p.s. I don't know the duration of Wade's contract, but he doesn't seem to be in the long term picture.

Letting Derrick Dockery go to the Bills was a mistake. You don't draft and groom core guys like that only to let them go to another team to reap the benefits.

Chia, I agree its a problem ... and it can be tracked down to the people at Joseph Enterprises (the makers of Chia products ... see www.chia.com ). They allow for chia registration, but they NEVER FOLLOW UP. If not for the good people at the Chia Rescue League, packs of feral chia animals would overrun this country.

I was under the impression that Joe Bugel had problems with Dockery. The narrative was that he rode Dockery like a rookie and took it easy on his vets. Maybe there was more too it ... other than the fact that they refused to make him a lotto winner when he hit free agency after the new CBA.

With the salary cap, if you draft well you have no choice but to let some of your successes go elsewhere. The Patriots have this problem every year -- they can't afford all the talent on their team.

We had to choose between Champ Bailey and LaVar Arrington, and we made the wrong choice. In the case of Dockery, there was no way we could squeeze his salary under the cap, and we got a good fix with Kendall.

Posted by: Chia Pet | April 30, 2008 5:50 PM | Report abuse

From Clayton -

After years of trying to build their team through free agency and trade, the Redskins seem to have switched their philosophy. Under executive vice president Vinny Cerato, Washington held onto its draft choices this spring and even traded out of the first round to add more picks. Although owner Daniel Snyder will still try to go big-game hunting and try to land a Chad Johnson in a trade, the organization seems to like the idea of rededicating itself through the draft. The Redskins have six of their seven picks for next season, losing a fourth-round pick for guard Pete Kendall because he played more than 80 percent of the snaps. They could even get three compensatory picks to bring their 2009 total to nine.

Redskins Rx: Kareem Moore, a cornerback from Nicholls State, is expected to get arthroscopic surgery this week. He was a sixth-round choice of the Redskins. Moore will join fellow Redskins sixth-rounder Colt Brennan on the sidelines this weekend. The Hawaii quarterback is coming back from hip surgery.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 30, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

sfskin, I'm thinking the Bears are thinking that some free agent QBs will become available ... Tampa Bay can't keep seven QBs forever, can they? ... or maybe that Grossman is not really ready to mentor a rookie. Maybe he needs a better QB coach, I dunno. I'm thinking Pennington becomes available ... maybe Charlie Batch (who any team should drool over ... could be the next Kitna or The Todd ... a lifetime #2 just waiting for a shot) ... maybe Rosenfels ... or who knows, maybe Leftwich. Once Matt Ryan is ready, Leftwich makes the most cap space to cut. There are lots of guys out there who could be good, even though they weren't available in free agency prior to the draft, they might become expendable after evaluating the QBs picked in the draft.

Posted by: dcsween | April 30, 2008 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Chia,

As much as i like "Dock", the bills overpaid for him and for once, the Skins showed some restraint. He got like $48 mill ( can't remember exact #'s ) and like over half guaranteed.

Posted by: Chia Pet | April 30, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

Let's also remember that when Dock left, we got a third round Compensatory pick, which we then used on a future replacement, who comes at a much cheaper price.

Posted by: kost52 | April 30, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

Agreed ... it was a good (i.e., sane, rational, whatever) move to let Dockery go ... but it was PURE LUCK that Kendall was available after they did not draft a guard in reliance on Todd Wade. In hindsight, after they let go of Dockery, they should have picked a guard after picking Landry. The next pick was in the 5th round a year ago, right? or was it the 4th? I remember that they picked Sartz before they picked Blades ... two LBs, but no Plan B to replace the starting guard apart from Wade, who had NEVER played guard. That said, the only truly stupid pick in that draft was Jordan Palmer. Sartz did eventually find work elsewhere (Minnesota?).

kost, I never understood why the Skins got a third round pick for Dockery and the Bills didn't get a third round pick for Fletcher. At a minimum, those two SHOULD have been a wash (starting-wise and salary-wise).

Big question is whether we can trade ARE to someone like the Titans for a good player or moderately high (#2 or #3) 2009 draft pick. Titans desperately need WRs.

Posted by: | April 30, 2008 6:04 PM

No. 'Skins can't afford the cap hit. ARE has not put up good numbers and is not that highly regarded around the league. And, in a trade the other team would have to pick up his salary and the 'Skins are overpaying him. He's ours and he's not leaving.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 30, 2008 6:10 PM | Report abuse

I wouldn't be jumping the gun on the "trade ARE" front just yet.

The man can catch and then run after the catch; certainly had some big games for us in 2007.

2008 could be an even more productive year for ARE.

Posted by: Chia Pet | April 30, 2008 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Sween, it takes into account the wage of the player more than it does the playing time, which I find strange too.

Zornskins, just guessing but, Prioleau and Caldwell (was Brunell cut or out of contract?) and then if guys like Godfrey, McCardell or Stoutmire sign elsewhere. They might only end up being 7th Rounders but they're still picks I guess.

Posted by: kost52 | April 30, 2008 6:14 PM | Report abuse

I believe BRUNELL's contract was not renewed. I think he signed a 1yr contract last year for the '07 season.

Posted by: CLEGG | April 30, 2008 6:25 PM | Report abuse

If that's the case then he's probably a Comp. pick as well.

Posted by: kost52 | April 30, 2008 6:29 PM | Report abuse

I was thinking that with our draft it made it potentially more likely ocho cinco would go to the Cowpaddies.

Jerrah J. likes the big name splash as much as the Danny but he tends to be better at getting big names who can still play.

I feel like TO is one turf toe away from being a has been.

Posted by: sfskin | April 30, 2008 6:35 PM | Report abuse

sfskin, I agree, they were a team who went into the draft with a need at WR, and didn't draft one, so maybe they are looking to trade for one.

-------------------------

splain somethin;

How is getting a guy with two arthritic needs and a disgruntled attitude a "good fix?"

Is this why Mangini gave Kendall Pet the stiff arm, no pun intended?

-------------------------

In 2007 Kendall Pet became embroiled in a contract dispute with the Jets' front office. Kendall Pet believed the team had reneged on a verbal agreement to raise his base salary for 2007 after he had agreed to restructure his contract the year before. Kendall Pet made his grievances public despite head coach Eric Mangini's instructions not to do so. As a result, Mangini sent Kendall Pet to the rookie dorms and demoted him to second string, further aggravating the situation. On August 23, 2007 Kendall Pet was traded to the Washington Redskins for a conditional draft pick (either a fifth round pick in 2008 or a fourth round pick in 2009, based on playing time).

Posted by: fred | April 30, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

sween says: I never understood why the Skins got a third round pick for Dockery and the Bills didn't get a third round pick for Fletcher. At a minimum, those two SHOULD have been a wash (starting-wise and salary-wise).

They were a wash from the Bills' point of view. What we had was a little something I call "The Duckett Factor". So we "lost" two "third round comp. picks" and only gained one back... and so, Chad Reinhardt becomes the final payoff on the Duckett deal.
You could even argue that Duckett was therefore traded for "only" two 4th round picks... which doesn't really make the deal better...

Better get an answer in before someone makes something up.

Fred, some think Chris Wilson is an undersized DE. I would make an undersized LFB. I would love to say that I was training for CB, but alas, as being in the HR field it was nothing as glamorous. I was training staff on our new payroll system.

Maybe, I could send this system to the NFL to use for rookies...

Imagine this from a girls writer:

http://mvn.com/nfl-cowboys/2008/04/30/2008-draft-studs-and-duds/

(excerpt)

Washington Redskins
For a team that hasn't seemed to give two rats' behinds about the draft in recent seasons, it wasn't a shock to see the Redskins trade out of the first round. However,
Washington turned three second rounder's and three sixth rounder's into quite an offensive haul.

Already a playoff team, and having averaged just more than 20 points per game last season, Washington went bonkers, grabbing the fourth- and sixth-best receivers on the board in Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas. Both guys are big enough to push corners around at the line of scrimmage and will be perfect compliments to speedster Santana Moss. Fred Davis will learn a great deal from Pro Bowler Chris Cooley; at any given time, the Redskins will have at least three, and as many as five, dangerous weapons on the field...and that's without counting star running back Clinton Portis.

Justin Tryon was a solid pick in round four, and field position won't be a problem after getting the best punter in the draft. Colt Brennan was a very intriguing pick; if he can adjust to the culture change from
Hawaii to D.C., he has the skills to become a solid NFL quarterback (judging him just from that Sugar Bowl is a mistake). At the very least, he provides a stronger backup option than Todd Collins, and he will be a capable replacement if starter Jason Campbell can't stay healthy or take the next step in his development.

Bolstered by that second-round boon,
Washington carried that momentum into a solid second day. A playoff offense should be able to average an extra 4-7 points per game this year. In any other division, the Redskins project as an 11-win team; in the NFC East, 9-10 wins, but still another playoff berth, is reasonable.

TRAINWRECK OF A TEAM??? WE went 9-7 in the toughest division in the league? We made the playoffs. We were decimated by injuries, and lost our best player to an untimely death! I'd say we are in a pretty good position to challenge for 10 wins this year. I certainly don't think 9 wins gets us in next year.

But I haven't exactly broken down game film to prove that point. I just remember Kendall being good, Wade being not as good, Fabini being awful, and Heyer being impressive though very very raw. "COMMENTARY
Dad Karl Malone a footnote in Demetrius Bell's life
Allen Wilson
Updated: 04/29/08 3:54 PM

If you're a fan of NBA great Karl Malone, you might change your mind when you start reading this column.

If you never heard of Buffalo Bills rookie offensive tackle Demetrius Bell, you'll be rooting for him when I tell you his story.

Bell was a seventh-round draft pick and two-year starter at Northwestern State, the same Louisiana school that produced cornerback Terrence McGee.

Bell is the son of Malone, but the Mailman had no role in Bell's success except passing along athletic genes.

The two have had very little contact during Bell's life. His mother, Gloria Bell, reportedly was only 13 years old and Malone a college sophomore at Louisiana Tech when Demetrius was born. Malone might have served jail time had her family asked the district attorney to file criminal charges.

Bell didn't even know Malone was his father until after graduating from high school. When they finally met, Malone told the 18-year-old Bell it was too late to be his father, and that Bell would have to "earn his money on his own."

In a 1998 story in the Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune, Gloria Bell said, "Demetrius is ashamed that his dad doesn't claim him. But I've told him it is not his fault."

Malone also fathered twins while in high school. One of them is WNBA star Cheryl Ford. It took years to claim the twins, and now he and his wife, Kay, fully accept them as part of their family.

But what about Demetrius? Doesn't he deserve the same measure of love and recognition?

Wade was injured during training camp last year when they were trying to make a guard out of him and I think he never recovered. There's a chance he comes back healthy this year and contributes. The Skins have three guys on the right side who have had a hard time staying healthy.

One thing I noticed reading about some of the linemen the Skins signed after the draft, at least one player was said to have a strong lower body, but needed to develop his upper body. Made me wonder if that's part of Buge's thinking, that the upper body is easier to develop if the player has the frame for it. Anyhow, some of those UDFA OLmen are looking pretty promising.

PS:
Agree and disagree. Kendall is better than you say, but the line would be better with a young stud in his position. Kendall though is a keeper; and, his career could be extended a couple of years as a back-up. I guess we're all hoping that Rinehart is good enough to start in Kendall's spot.

Skins, I'm anxious about some of the OL that the Redskins signed as well. The cat from Appalachian St. especially.

Posted by: Greg | May 1, 2008 9:24 AM | Report abuse

per nfl.com

Washington averaged 22 points a game against NFC East opponents last year, but the Redskins need to generate more offense than that. The team committed to three offensive receiving weapons with its first three picks, adding wide receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly as well as tight end Fred Davis. There's a good chance the development of quarterback Jason Campbell and the new additions will add up to increased scoring -- but did the Redskins do enough to get pressure on division quarterbacks? Last year, the Redskins sacked Eli Manning four times and only gave up two touchdown passes against the Giants. Washington sacked Donovan McNabb five times and allowed four touchdown passes to the Eagles. The Redskins got to Tony Romo twice, while giving up four touchdown passes. So in six games against division opponents, Washington generated 11 sacks and gave up 10 touchdown passes. Washington's decision to skip the pass rusher and generate more offense looks like the right way to go.

Shannon Boatman OL Florida State
Kerry Brown OL Appalachian State
Devin Clark OL New Mexico
Kyle DeVan OL Oregon State
Alonzo Dotson DE Oklahoma
Horace Gant WR St. Olaf College

Bret Meyer QB Iowa State
Kevin Mitchell S Illinois
Matteral Richardson CB Arkansas
Justin Scott S Purdue
Dorian Smith DE Oregon State
Bryan Wilson LB Morgan State

in the past, it seems that when it came to deciding who made the final roster, this team always favored veterans over rookies/young guys for backup positions.

I think this year will be different. I think alot of oldtimers arent going to make the cut and younger, less talented, less experienced guys are going to stick. I would not be surprised to see 6 of our drafted players make the 53man roster, with atleast 2 others on the practice squad.

Also, like one or two more of the OL UFAs to make the team, or practice squad. Especially with Buges coaching them up. Skins need to make sure we keep JB around until he can't walk anymore. And even then...

I thought I remember a quote recently from The Owner about how, esp. with bigger vet contracts that have been renegotiated to make cap space, there is something of a financial necessity to make sure that the player plays out the contract. Two-year starter at tackle who quickly developed into one of the team's top players on the offensive line in 2006 and established himself as one of the elite blockers in the Mountain West Conference in 2007...was a strong, physical and aggressive player up front in his 25 Division I games...earned a reputation as one of the MWC's top pass blockers and was named first team all-MWC as a senior...made a remarkably quick impact after joining the team just weeks before the 2006 season began...enrolled at UNM in the summer of `06, but was not cleared academically until mid-August...worked hard to get himself in position to contribute in `06, staying late after every practice to work on his technique and putting in extra time in the film room...had to maximize his time in preseason camp once again after missing most of 2007 spring practice with an ankle injury...suffered a severe sprain one week into the spring and later underwent surgery to stabilize the joint...involved nationally in Olympic-style weightlifting competitions, he placed fourth in the super heavyweight division at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships in March of `06...not surprisingly he won the team's Beefmaster award in `07 for players 275 pounds or heavier...led all offensive linemen in every weight lifting category...had a top bench of 405 pounds, an offensive line record 374 in the power clean and 600 in the squat.
(SENIOR): First team all-MWC selection who was outstanding in all 13 games, helping to return the Lobo offensive line group, known as "The Hitmen," to its traditional place as one of the premier units in the MWC...was slowed a bit early in the season with pain in his surgically repaired ankle, but never missed a snap due to injury...2nd on the team with 99 knockdowns...allowed just 3 sacks in nearly 450 passing attempts despite frequent one-on-one pass protection duties at right tackle...1 sack allowed in the final 7 regular season games...overall performance grade was over 80% in 9 games, including 3 against Utah, BYU and Wyoming's top-25 ranked defenses...was correct on at least 95% of his assignments in 9 games during the fall...also had perfect technique on at least 70% of his snaps 4 games...5 games with double-digit knockdown totals...the effort by The Hitmen up front powered one of the MWC's most balanced offenses and helped UNM rank 3rd in sacks allowed among the league's 8 teams with 300+ passing attempts.

Talkshow,

I do not see that, we have the same Defense we had last year minus Taylor. Granted that is a big piece missing but we should be fine at safety. I do not think taking a second round DE would have made the Defense any better this year. This defense is still a top ten defense, and if we can score some points that should be good enough.

one name that jumps of the UDFA list, for me at least, is Kyle DeVan of Oregon State. The Beavers always have a strong running game and DeVan anchored their line as a damn fine center, a position of real need on the Skins.
Found this tidbit which i thought the hamsters could fondle with their tiny little hamster arms:

As for undrafted free agents who became impact players, the list is lengthy. To name but a few:

QBs Tony Romo, Kurt Warner and Jeff Garcia; RBs Ryan Grant, Priest Holmes, James Allen, Mack Strong and Stacey Mack; WRs Ruvell Martin, Wes Walker, Terrence Wilkins, and David Patten; offensive linemen Jeff Saturday, Ryan Lilja, Stephen Neal, James Williams, Derrick Deese and Mark Dixon; DL Paul Spicer, Cullen Jenkins, Ed Johnson and Greg White, LBs Antonio Pierce, Ryan Nece and James Harrison; DBs Terry Cousin and Nick Jarper; Ks Adam Vinatieri and Olindo Mare; and punter Tom Rouen.

Go further back and you'll find Deron Cherry, Sam Mills, Wayne Chrebet and Joe Jacoby as more undrafted free agents who flourished in The League.

The same article said last year's 12 playoff teams had a total of 167 undrafted free agents on their collective rosters. That sounds way too high, but no doubt someone here can verify one way or the other.

Longtime reader, new poster... Did anyone notice how Vinny's eyes bugged out a little when he was introduced on total access last night as the VP of player personnel? After the interview they got his title correct but i think the damage had been done and he seemed a little disturbed. Or maybe that was normal Vinny, I'm not sure, we don't get to see him too often on Atlanta tv.

RARE PRAISE FOR THE FO

Here's what the Kendal deal did:

By letting Dockery go, the skins got a 3rd round COMP pick, which they turned into a new, young guard, Chad Rinehart.

It also saved them a ton of money...$$$ they can spend on their new WR corps.

Kendall bought them a season or two while Rinehart comes up to speed.

Dock is a good guard, but he's no Hutchinson or Faneca, guys who might be worth the enormous cash FA guards are demanding.

I'm not a HUGH fan of the FO, but this was the right move and paid off beautifully for the Redskins, unless Rinehart is a BUST.

Why is there so much hate on Vinnie's eyes? What's that got to do with anything? Are all of us up here so gorgeous, and so vapid, that we feel compelled to point out that Vinnie's eyes are not like ours?

Word has it that Redcoat's eyes are a mite beady, sween's are crossed, and Nate only has one, right in the middle of his forehead. So when you attack Vinnie, you make these regulars feel bad about themselves.

So, Nate, only one eye! Must be pretty hard to drive or catch a baseball without binocular vision. Oh well, in the valley of the blind the one eyed man is king. And, with only one, at least it's not crossed like sween's.

I'm currently pulling from a dry well on Skins stuff that hasn't been rehashed 10,000 times.

So a little sillly season seems okay for a while.

We usually sprinkle in football well enough.

So for example I've been fretting about our 5 preseason games thanks to whoever brought it up yesterday. The preseason has been our worst enemy the last two years in terms of key injuries.

I think the second game should be played by UDFA's and waterboys after the first quarter.

'D.C. Madam' Palfrey Found Dead in Fla.

By Allison Klein and Carol D. Leonnig
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, May 1, 2008; 3:56 PM

Deborah Jeane Palfrey, convicted last month of running a high-end prostitution service in Washington, apparently committed suicide in Florida, officials have confirmed.

Authorities were called today to a mobile home park in Tarpon Springs, Fla., where they found a body in a residence belonging to Palfrey's mother. The St. Petersburg Times reported on its Web site that Palfrey was staying with her mother, Blanche Palfrey, at the Sun Valley Estates Mobile Home Park, at 167 Cypress Ave. The paper reported that Blanche Palfrey contacted police about the death about 10:52 a.m.

Kirwin knows whats up....

In 2008, the Skins should have an excellent offensive line and quality depth; assuming Jansen and Thomas come back from injuries and there is no reason not to believe that at the moment. It's easy to forget how good Thomas and Jansen are when we didn't get to see them play much last year. With them the Skins can run right or left ;-> Rabach can get to the next level and is rarely pushed back. Samuels is an pro-bowl LT and Kendall was a solid pick up at LG. IMO he was more consistent than Dockery and cost only 5 mil for 2 years.

[Like others have said -- Dockery won the FA sweepstakes and the Skins made the correct move in not matching. He's a good player, but I think the Bills were reckless for paying him T dollars. Does anyone think LG is more important than LT? They panicked and paid him like was the best LG in the league...]

The Skins should have even better OL depth this year. Backup RG/RT Fabini was much better than expected -- he's not in Thomas's league -- but he was a former starting T and is a real solid backup. Heyer is an excellent backup T and was an unexpected UDFA rookie find last year. Wade was injured, was not able to secure the RG position, and eventually lost the RT position -- He'll have to work hard not to be pushed out by a rookie in camp. Backup C/G Pucillo is injured and will not return. Backup C is a hole that either Kyle DeVan or Alexander can fill. Rinehart will be a backup RG/RT to start and eventually replace Fabini/Thomas in a year or two. IMO, the big hole on the OL is still backup LG. Perhaps one of the UDFA OL (e.g. Boatman or Brown) will show some talent and win that position. If not, then that could be Alexanders OL role or the Skins could sign another experienced FA G at the end of training camp and send some of the UDFAs to the practice squad.

Interesting analysis by Kirwan. Not on the mark, but interesting. Young WRs usually struggle in their first year. Even great talents like Rice were a long way from what the were two years later.

As for the defense analysis, sort of makes sense. Except the one game against Eli, the wind was the best defender and the Jints dropped about 15 passes. The last game of the season vs dallas, they rested a few key starters. The Skins D did play a monster game that day. So I wouldn't read too much into the sacks to TD ratio.

The other point is more important. Its unlikely any of these drafted rookies will contribute much in their rookie year. So its looking down the road. That is where the defense (line and LBs) are older. They'll be good in 2008, but by 2010, there will be some major gaps to fill.

There is info on the Skins site about Jansen being ready to come back and returning full-on for the mini camp.

The site also has stuff about Rinehart being slotted to push at RT, but also getting some action at RT and C:

"Third-round pick Chad Rinehart is expected to get the bulk of work at right tackle, but offensive line coach Joe Bugel may work him at right guard and center as well. Rinehart could get an extended look should coaches decide to limit reps for Jon Jansen and Randy Thomas, who are both coming off injuries."

I was thinking he was the natch to back-up, if not replace Kendall. This makes it sound like Heyer and Fabini are perceived as chopped liver.

Posted by: dcsween | May 1, 2008 5:08 PM | Report abuse

Umm just read Sally Jenkins from yesterday.

I don't know what to do. The column reads both positive and negative. Cosmically that upsets the balance and the flow.

And she did say it's "impossible to prejudge the Redskins" apparently she does not spend time on RI.

Posted by: sfskin | May 1, 2008 5:10 PM | Report abuse

Sirls, really good analysis of the line. Since O lines do tend to have a lot of injuries, depth is critical. I think you are more comfortable with the depth than I am. Also, Kendall is pretty up there in age, so there is always the risk that this is the year he falls off dramatically in performance. I wouldn't bet that way, but it is possible.

On Alexander, the Skins need to decide what he will be. Offense or defense. He filled multiple niches last year and I like the guy. But for his own sake, there needs to be a meeting of the minds so he can become really good at one position.

Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | May 1, 2008 5:12 PM | Report abuse

Fabini probably is chopped liver.
Heyer has a chance, since he's young and needs time to develop.

Stumped, SMACK wasn't excited about Leonard Davis either. Fabini was only a short timer in Dallas (and I'm guessing maybe he was hurt or something). His real work was as a Parcell's guy from the Jets when they were good (and he played RT next to Randy Thomas when he was there). Entering his 10th season.

This will play out in training camp and determine if the Skins keep 9 or 10 OL + LS Albright. My best (uninformed) guess is the OL backups will be RG/RT Rinehart, RG/RT Fabini, LT/RT Heyer, and LG/C Alexander. With LG Brown and C DeVan on either the practice squad or as the 10th OL.

Siris, I was thinking the draft choice (Rinehart) and the vets w/starting experience (Fabini & Heyer ... but not Wade). So that the only real roster spot would be for interior backup. I agree that nine is what seems to have been the pattern here and on other teams, plus a scrub team guy (esp. if they want to get all those receivers).

Posted by: dcsween | May 1, 2008 5:44 PM

sween - if you start questioning the whys and wherefores of the English language you'll eventually want to kill yourself and others.

I do it all too regularly and find my blood pressure dangerously high.

For example the following words end with same last 4 letters but are all pronounced differently:

though
through
trough

It's an inane language that I thank the gods I grew up speaking cause I sure as SJK wouldn't want to have to learn it now.

And just to make it "related" - foot vs. boot
And it's the NFL draft but I want draught beer.

AAAAAHHHHHH

Blurb from today's WashTimes

And recently, Campbell has seen on DVD how the Seattle Seahawks -- whose staff included new Redskins coach Jim Zorn -- used 25 three-receiver formations and 13 four-receiver formations in their playoff win over the Redskins.

So it's not surprising Campbell rubber-stamped the addition of tight end Fred Davis and receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly in last weekend's draft.

hello everyone,
Was hoping after DE Marcus Dixon did not get drafted, the Skins would sign him to a FA contract.

Apparently, the Skins stayed away from Dixon.
6-4" 284 lbs DE from Hampton U.

anyone know if anyone has signed him yet?
I can't imagine [yes I know what happened 5 years ago] they wouldn't want to try out a 6-4 284 lb. DE who is a good student now and very athletic.

Anyone know who signed him?
I know he went undrafted...

Thanks everyone!

I saw Vinny on Comcast today.

He went through a few players. Looks like they think Kelly is football fast so the 4-6 is not such a big deal. Also said doctors said the Knees should be fine.

They liked DE Miami picked up Merling but did not think he was worth a 1st round pick and were going to Pick Thomas instead even if he was there at 34. They knew Saunders/Rams was not going to pick him at 33 because he wants small receivers. I think that might mean ARE or Moss will be gone in 2009 - maybe to the rams.

In the third round he said that the D coaches did not see an upgrade from what they have now so O line was the way to go.

Anyway I was OK with Vinny's drafting but not in FA. As he did nothing in FA I still hold to my opinions. If they want new tools they have to get them this year because it will take 2-3 years to get going full speed. DE DT can get going in a year.

Last go look at the first round in 1983 - 6 Hall of fame peeps including the two best at there position - Dan and Green.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free agent safety Pierson Prioleau on Wednesday and waived quarterback Lester Ricard.

Prioleau, entering his 10th season, spent the last three years with the Washington Redskins. He played 15 games in 2007, starting four and finishing with 38 tackles. He has 353 tackles, 5½ sacks and one interception in 113 career games with San Francisco, Buffalo and Washington.

Prioleau, who will be reunited with former Redskins and current Jaguars defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, will give Jacksonville some much-needed depth at safety.

Another Bengal in trouble?
Posted: Friday May 02, 2008 08:05AM ET
Bengals linebacker Ahmad Brooks has been accused of punching a Florence woman in the left eye. Brooks, who lives in Union, has been summoned to appear June 6 in Boone District Court to answer to the charge of misdemeanor assault, punishable by up to a year in the jail. Destiny Rosich gave a sworn statement Wednesday that Brooks was arguing outside her neighbor's home on April 9. She said her children were outside playing and began to cry because Brooks and the neighbor were about to start a fistfight.

Yeah Chad is the real problem. I don't blame him for wanting to get the hell out of there.

Cowboys | Alleged shooter claims P. Jones framed him
Thu, 1 May 2008 20:29:18 -0700

The Associated Press reports a man charged with shooting three people outside a Las Vegas strip club denies he was involved and accused Dallas Cowboys CB Pacman Jones of ordering the shooting and framing him to avoid identifying the real shooter. Arvin Kenti Edwards is being held in a Washington state jail on $1 million bail pending extradition to Nevada. Edwards told WTVF-TV in Nashville that Jones lied to police about the Feb. 19, 2007, shooting that left an employee paralyzed and two other people wounded at the Minxx club. Edwards said Jones paid someone for the shooting but that it wasn't him.

I start understanding why they did not draft a linebacker. If this is true, it's a great news. Here's an exerpt from Redskins' official website:

McIntosh suffered a knee ligament injury in mid-December and underwent surgery in January. McIntosh's rehab has a shorter time frame, team officials said. He could be ready to participate in individual drills during mini-camp, but he may sit out team work. McIntosh could be fully healthy by training camp.

There are ways to get around that. He can have DT, SS, OLB, MLB, 3rd, 4th or 5th CB, and FS help. All rotating help assignments on every play. So when you think that SS is playing the LOS, he's really dropping in coverage. It all depends how the defense is aligned with the offense.

Amazing story of my girlfriend

I have a girlfriend. We work together in a large company. She's serious, cute and slightly shy.
So once she fell in love with this guy from the department next door. He was an IT specialist. And just imagine, he turned out to be so shy that even if she approached him with some business or just for fun, he would not ask her out because of his shyness. Though it was obvious that he liked her a lot too.
We realized that if my girlfriend did not invite him somewhere, their relations would not last long 'cause anyway it is the man who is supposed to take the initiative.
Two months of suffering and she finally decided to act. We got our plan of seduction ready.
First of all, we had to spur him somehow, stir him up so to say. For that very purpose we decided to buy Levitra on the Internet because there was nothing else we could think of. We searched for levitra and found what we wanted.
We got the package from the Internet store 2 weeks later. It was kinda embarrassing to buy it in the drugstore and here it was all confidential. Just wonderful.
Now all hopes for my girlfriend and pills. We turned one pill into powder. Then brought some juice and waited till the weekend.
Just before the weekend, almost at the very end of the workday, we stirred the powder into one of the glasses with the juice and my girlfriend called the guy to help her with the computer. Everyone had already left and she was alone in the office.
After he came up to her, she gave him some juice with Levitra as if to thank him for the help with the computer.
It was not long till the trick worked. As she told me afterwards, it had been romantic and at the same time so passionate that she could not tell. The guy even proposed to her not long ago.
So our plan had worked just fine.
And did any of your friends or even you have interesting stories like this? Or maybe you found your dear half in some usual way as well?

where to look for online herpes medication?

Posted by: valyac | May 29, 2008 2:27 AM | Report abuse

So I was in a jam. The electricity was shut off. I forgot to pay the bill. So I asked my parents for money. They wouldn't even offer a single dollar! So, I went looking into a payday loan. There were no store in my area, so off to the internet to solve all of my problems. I decided to go with Speedy Cash. So I filled out all of the paperwork and sent in a two page fax. The next day I checked my bank account and they tried withdrawing the full amount of the advance rather than depositing it! So I called them and went nuts! They said they were not responsible and that it was MY MISTAKE! Well, anyway I call the attorney general. No one was able to do anything to help me. So out of curiosity I called another payday advance company. The company was quick advance. They offered me a much cheaper rate and fixed the problem with the other company! Quick Advance rocks! If you're ever in the market for a payday advance be sure to do your research!
