A Note from the Sports Editor

Emilio Garcia-Ruiz asked me to share this with you:

We've had some calls and emails about statements made today by Vinny Cerrato, who said on his radio show that Post reporter Jason LaCanfora had called "the league office to charge us with tampering."

Jason did not "charge" anyone with anything. He called the NFL's public relations staff last week to ask how the league's anti-tampering rules would come into play if Vinny Cerrato answered a question during his new radio show about a player or coach under contract to another team. Sports radio hosts are often asked these sorts of questions, and we were curious whether Cerrato would be limited in the way he could respond by virtue of his position as a team GM.

Jason did not make any sort of complaint whatsoever. (In fact, reporters cannot charge teams with violations of NFL rules. Only other teams can file charges like tampering.) He referred to Cerrato's questions about Raiders coach Lane Kiffin only to provide context for the question he was asking. He did not write about the issue.

We called the league today to confirm that Jason had not charged the Redskins with tampering. Here's what NFL spokesman Michael Signora had to say: "Jason LaCanfora called our office and said that Vinny Cerrato was talking in specifics on his radio show about the Raiders' coaching position. Jason wanted to know if that could possibly be a tampering issue. Jason has been told that there is no general prohibition against publicly talking about another team's players or staff. It routinely occurs throughout the league."

Satisfied now, MF'ers???!!!

And there we have it. We now go to inside Dan Snyders Bung for Rebuttal.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 22, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

If it routinely occurs, shouldn't a beat reporter know that? If people are making comments like this all the time? And why did the NFL feel compelled to tell Cerrato if it wasn't an accusation?

Cindy,

Still sounds like JLC was trying to get something started.

Jason LaCanfora called our office and said that Vinny Cerrato was talking in specifics on his radio show about the Raiders' coaching position. Jason wanted to know if that could possibly be a tampering issue.

That is more than inquiring that is trying to stir the pot.

They would have never even known that happened if he did not call.

The line that proves it for me is, said that Vinny Cerrato was talking in specifics on his radio show about the Raiders' coaching position.

This is Jasno telling them what happened on the show not inquiring

Posted by: Flounder | September 22, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

That sounds to me like he was trying to get Vinny in trouble, but whatever.

"Jason LaCanfora called our office and said that Vinny Cerrato was talking in specifics on his radio show about the Raiders' coaching position. Jason wanted to know if that could possibly be a tampering issue.

Why would he called to ask? It wasn't like Vinny was going after the coach. Once again I believe he should be put on another beat.

Posted by: jm220 | September 22, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

The editors encourage this guy to make the Skins look bad, so a response like this is not surprising. Did you think they'd can him and give Vinny that satisfaction?

snitch...

Thanks for the clarification! I think Jasno was an idiot for the way he did it (and I have my reasons for why he did it) but am glad that maybe now we can go back to football.

Okay Portis to break 100 yards? N 75ish
Campbell for over 300 yds? N 225
Cooley for a TD? Yes
D to get 2 turnovers+? Yes
Brooks to get a 60+ yd punt? Yes, and will pin Dallas inside 20 3 times.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 22, 2008 7:52 PM

Posted by: Anonymous | September 22, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

1 thing does not add up.

Only another team can field a tampering charge.
The team is only told when a tampering charge has been filed according to vinny.

JLC can call and make an accusation all day long and the NFL office is not gonna file it.

Someone in the NFL office called vinny about a non-charge.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 22, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

This is what reporters do - they dig around to see if there's a story. I don't see why anyone is shocked by this.

Posted by: David | September 22, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

On 980, they discussed today whether Zorn is winning with Gibbs' team. Here's my take:

1) Of course, this is Gibbs personnel, but with a very different philosophy.

2) Gibbs seemed to agonize over every playcall. Gibbs lacked that gusto that he once had.

3) Gibbs took this team as far a she could take it, and that is not a bad thing.

4) Zorn may still prove to be a bust, but JC is finally maturing into the QB Gibbs drafted. I watched JC yesterday and he's growing by leaps and bounds.

5) The team is relatively healthy right now, but this team has been together for a while and could be dangerous down the stretch.

6) I always said that all this team needed was confidence. They have talent and some depth. The only thing this team lacks is that elite pass rush and that jumbo O-line.

7) I don't know why people are doggin Devin Thomas. He's on the field contributing. He had some bonehead penalties, but he's on the field.

AND THAT'S THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SIC.

JLC is a straight up hater #1. It seems like the real reason he did it is due to competition with his Comcast show.

There is starting to loom a large conflict of interest for a number of Post beat writers and the Post corporate needs to nip it in the bud before they lose all credibility regarding the Skins, Wizards and other local teams.

Maybe he's angling to get a job with his buddy Jerry Coleman, another throwaway in the world of sports radio flotsam and jetsam.

Posted by: Skins lover | September 22, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Or not...

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 22, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Alex,

They can spin it however they want, point is JLC called to try and get the team in trouble there post proves it to me, he told the league office exactly what Cerrato said and then asked if it could be tampering.

JLC is smart enough to know this was not tampering, so there was no need for the call except trying to get the team in trouble.

And on that note I am done, lets move on to Dallas.

Posted by: Flounder | September 22, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

That's an obvious attempt to stir up trouble, and a weaselly thing to do.

"Mom, I just want to check and see if Vinny is going to get in trouble for stealing a cookie."

Tee hee.

Look, if Vinny does or says something out of bounds on his show, the NFL is going to find out. When that happens, report it with glee. Everyone knows JLC hates Skins management.

But to be the whistle-blower yourself, even if only to report on the ramifications, is dishonorable to your profession and your readers. I would fire you. It is childish, smarmy, and the "ish" version of a number of four letter words.

Once again, the Post should be ashamed by this behavior.

Posted by: Skudge | September 22, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

There is a big difference between reporting the news and making the news.

If nothing is done about this forget the Post since it obviously has an agenda that has nothing to do with objective news reporting.

I'm a skins fan and you guys are incredible. You have bought into the propaganda machine that is Dan Snyder.
There are few, if any, GM's who have a radio show. It is a valid question from a reporter to find out how far a GM of a radio program can go in talking about other team's personnel and coaches. JLC does a great job covering this team. He is not a paid employee of ther Redskins. He writes articles that are favorable when they deserve it (take a look in today's paper) and writes articles that are not favorable when it is deserved.I suspect the Wash Times covers the team in a similar way. BTW, you guys who submit as 'annoymous' should not be so cowardly if you are going to criticize. Post your name and be heard!

Posted by: Rob | September 22, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Why antagonize the very team you are responsible for covering? How "inside" are you gonna be now? You are to report the news JLC, not make it.

The stupid Sports editor needs to wake up and put someone less biased on the Skins beat. It's obvious La Cant Reporta has it in for Danny, Vinny and the Skins.

I'm starting to wonder about the people running the show over here.

Posted by: JLC Sucks | September 22, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

It sounds like Vinny's account was pretty much 100% accurate. Okay, okay, so JLC did not officially "charge" the Redskins with tampering - something he could never technically do no matter how badly he wanted to. The point is JLC did in fact call the league office to see if Vinny's comments regarding Kiffin could constitute tampering.

To spin this as some harmless inquiry is silly. Does anyone with half a brain really think the call was an attempt to clarify the meaning of "tampering?" JLC knows damn well that tampering means making public statements expressing an interest, either implicitly or explicitly, in hiring or interviewing a player or coach under contract with another team. JLC has written about tampering and knows damn well what it means and that comments made on the radio amount to "public statements."

But let the JLC spin machine go into action. We'll see if it is just as effective, or ineffective, as the Redskins spin machine.

I DVRed the game and agree with sic...Devin Thomas is contributing. In the first quarter on the completion to ARE over the middle on third down Thomas was wide open waving to Campbell for what would have been an easy touchdown. Same on the third down play that Campbell threw to Moss's knees...Thomas was wide open...Jason starts looking more for him he could have a good day...hopefully against Dallas.

Old School Post Reader, the person who made the news was Vinny. There was no reason why he needed to share that info other than to stir the post, as so many of you like to say about Jasno. Vinny was not being investigated for anything. He made it into a big deal when it wasn't. He is trying to deflect the critisim he has gotten for doing the radio show in the first place. reposting ...

Stepping back and thinking bigger picture.

Earlier this week, a book was released with some incredibly damning stuff about the Dallas Cowboys, including Michael Irvin stabbing a teammate ... over a haircut. Somehow, that never managed to see the light of day -- until now. Nor did Switzer's $100,000 bar bill during Super Bowl week. etc etc

Where was the media on stuff like this? In Jerry Jones pocket?

I'd rather have a press that is aggressive in pursuing it stories. Clearly, covering the Cowboys meant turning a blind eye to a lot of stuff. I don't want the Redskins, or any other team, forcing the media to be as bad as the Dallas media.

when will people realize that Jla has a job to do. It's to sell interest in the Washingtonpost, not the Redskins. He is not a fan of the Skins, he is not a employee of the Skins, and he has no obligation to protect anything about the Skins...and it would be a huge story if a sitting teams glory seeking GM who decides to carve out several hours a day on the two most eventful personnel days of the week to do a radio show then violated league rules on it. That's his job, to find a story if there is one, not to protect Vinny or the honor of the Redskins. We tune in because this is the best info source on our team, and will continue to as long as that's the case, get off Jla's back and appreciate the info. If you wanna be mad at anyone, be mad at our idiot GM who could and should be spending time scouting FA's and college kids and trying to make our team better instead of trying to be a radio host. Maybe then we wouldn't draft a J.T. Tryon again.

JLC - For a guy who comes across as a sharp writer and in tune with a lot of the practices of the NFL, why would you do try to be teacher's pet on this one? If you are wondering how far Vinny can go, just ask him. If Vinny hasn't considered that what he says about teams on his show could be tampering(I doubt this, but for this exercise let's assume he doesn't), I think Vinny would call the office for clarification. This along with the whining after the mis-information about the Jason Taylor trade, we get it. You are upset. However you shouldn't let your anger influence your objectivity. Problem is that this whining may prevent access which is what you need to be an insider. Posted by: M | September 22, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

I got no major issue with anything JLa did -- if this is all of it. Was it smart? Probably not.

JLa's job isn't to do what the Redskins want, its to do what the WaPo wants, including operating within its guidelines.

The issue is the front office reaction. The NFL spokesman essentially said there was no "there there" (a reference originally applied to Oakland, fwiw). No story. Did JLa report anything? NO!!! He asked some questions, got an answer that said there was no story and it died.

Except ...

It was Vinny who carried the story to the airwaves, using his program on a radio station owned by his boss on both the radio and with the Redskins. And a blog owned by the same people who examined it in one-sided detail.

So far, this looks like a story about a reporter doing his job, finding a dead end and moving on. It was Vinny that chose to make this an issue.

Is this all there is? I don't know. But nothing so far leads me to believe that JLa was out of line.

If you ask me, Vinny Cerrato is the one being small here. Why did he even mention it? It's not like there was even a story published that needed a response. There was no reason for a rebuttal. If Cerrato doesn't make a comment today, absolutely nothing comes of this. JLC is just doing his job. People here need to remember that it's not JLC's job to support the organization in any manner. It's his job to report news. He is not under obligation to make the team look good or cast anything they do in a positive light. He's paid to report news and, on occasion, call it like he see's it (ie, the blog, which crosses the line from news to editorial). You people act like he get's paid by the Skins or something. Or that he has some vested interest in the team doing well.

Who will be a better WR in 3 years Kelly or Thomas?

The risk is that a rookie won't be able to mature into an effective player at all, so the one that looks ready today, wins the beauty contest.

I'd love to see Thomas be the unstoppable deep threat, and pick up some of Santana's mojo.

The OL and Soup are the real foundation for the success of our rookie WRs.

We will probably be comparing them both to Billy McMullen for the next few years too.

You are all insane. Jasno is a reporter. He is paid to dig up interesting stories. You're all saying that the NFL statement proves his bias. You actually trust how the NFL described his question? Vinny is a member of the insiders club, so they're going to defend him.

And did any of you read his story in the paper today? He knows football, and wrote a glowing article about the defensive game plan. Do you guys actually read?

I reiterate: he's a reporter who does a good job of digging up stories where others sit on their butts. Get over yourselves.

Sounds like a lot of people up here were on the conference call between JLaC and the NFL and can provide an authoritative opinion on what transpired.

Who cares if JLaC hates Dan Snyder? The only thing that will erase the opinion many have of Snyder is if he starts winning. That benefits all of us.

JLaC did have many positive things to say about Jim Zorn. While the jury is still out on whether or not Zorn can be a long-term NFL head coach, JLaC heaped lots of praise on Zorn's poise and playcalling the past two Sundays. He also rightly criticized Zorn for his pretty poor game management in the last 6 minutes of the Giants game.

JLaC is a reporter, not a fan.

It's funny how JLC has blogged repeatedly about tampering, but all of sudden seeks clarification on the rules.

You can't believe this was a simple inquiry unless you believe JLC is dumb, doesn't know the tampering rules, and has been ignorant of the tampering rules while even writing about them. The last sentence of this post makes that clear.

The more likely story is that JLC was stirring up some stuff. It's disappointing.

Jason seems like a good guy and a solid writer and reporter. I think at this point, the Post would be better off with someone else covering the Redskins. Jason seems to have lost his sense of objectivity.

There are a ton of great writers out there that would kill to be a beat reporter for the Redskins. Are you telling me the Post can't make this happen? Why not put him back on the Caps beat? He seemed happy there. I just want to read objective stories.

What a pile of crap. Typical of the Post.

And the fans hate him? That's an even dumber reason to fire someone who's pretty much just doing his job. Notice that *there was never a story written*. Reporters are paid to leave no stone unturned. In this case, he did his homework, but there was no story. It was a dead issue, until Vinny C. decided to comment on it.

If you have a problem with the Post's coverage, why don't you just get your "unfiltered" news directly from the Skins?

I think you're reading into it too much. I don't think he was attempting to get the team into trouble; he was simply looking into a possible angle on the fact that the team's GM is doing a radio show.

I think you also have to consider JLC's unique position. On the one hand, he's paid to report news for the paper; on the other hand, he's paid to offer his perspective for the blog and tv show. So in that sense, he's not strictly beholden to facts. He's actually paid to express his opinions, when in the appropriate forum.

If anyone knows the tampering rules, shouldn't it have been the Executive Vice President of Football Operations? When Vinny made that statement, he knew (or should have known) that it was impossible for anyone other than a team to file tampering charges. If he didn't, why doesn't the Executive VP of Football Operations know the tampering rules? It is beyond lame to make this into a story after a big win during Dallas Week when you are the freaking GM, but I guess Vinny was wearing his sports talk radio host hat there.

Not being an NFL franchise, I don't know how to file tampering charges myself, but my guess is you don't file them with the league's PR department, which is where JLC apparently called.

This was a Vinny issue, he got wind of it, got his panties in a bunch because the Waspo is like the only news media in town anymore that doesn't get their checks signed by Danny and are actual able to criticize the organization that so rightly deserves it, and Vinny decided to run his mouth about it. It was a reporter asking a question, maybe he should have known the answer but even so, what's wrong with asking? maybe you learn something, maybe you don't, maybe you start something and all of a sudden you have a hot story to report....again.......that's his JOB!

Why do all the angles have to be explored on this story at this time? Plenty of positives and football field related things he could be investigating. Until there is evidence that the radio show affects the Skins negatively on the field, is this story a priority? I guess the answer is yes when your #1 goal is to make the FO look bad. That's what you Jasno supporters call objectivity, right?

I am glad that Vinny let the cat out of the bag. This way JLC knows that us, the fans knows what he tried to do. JLC is a punk who was called out, then went to hide behind the skirts of the WaPo. Now everyone knows what kind of punk he is. Those that defend him do so because they have shared a beer with him. But if you look at the quote the WaPo put at the top of this blog, you can only come to the conclusion that JLC tried to CREATE news, not DIG up news.

I think you got to do with them a lot of what you did with AZ. You know that they will score points. So don't go into a shootout thinking that you can win with less than 21 points, and don't try and sit on any leads less than 8 points.

You need to control the clock better than you did last week, skins were losing TOP for most the game, got it back in the final 2 drives or so.

I think one mistake people make is they try and get after romo with the rush, when you are better off taking his catchers. That line of theres is too good to blitz and get regular pressure, so play their strengths to your advantage as best you can fake blitz a lot, put 8 guys in the box and rush 4 randomly.

I think JLC's question (as stated by the NFL) was in poor taste.

He could have easily asked.

"In the course of a radio show about the NFL, a host is going to be asked a lot of question in regards to other teams players and personnel. If the host is a GM of a team, such as Vinny Cerato of the Redskins, the team I cover, would there be possible tampering issues? Are their guidelines about what they are allowed to discuss and what they are not allowed to discuss publicly?"

That would have been an incisive question that maybe the NFL wouldn't have had a good answer for.

On the flipside, don't many coaches have "coaches shows", wouldn't the same tampering rules apply to them (for example, "we'd love to have Joe Shmoe be our right tackle, I can't believe the lumberjacks are treating him like crap in their negotiations!")

I think one mistake people make is they try and get after romo with the rush, when you are better off taking his catchers. That line of theres is too good to blitz and get regular pressure, so play their strengths to your advantage as best you can fake blitz a lot, put 8 guys in the box and rush 4 randomly.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 22, 2008 9:11 PM

The Giants killed them last year with the blitz pressure between the center guard.

How to beat Dallas?
--
I think you got to do with them a lot of what you did with AZ. You know that they will score points. So don't go into a shootout thinking that you can win with less than 21 points, and don't try and sit on any leads less than 8 points.

You need to control the clock better than you did last week, skins were losing TOP for most the game, got it back in the final 2 drives or so.

The Giants had better rushers than us MJ. If I had any faith in our DT's against these guys I would say do it. But who do we have that are good enough to do that?

This Lowery kid playing CB for the Jets looks pretty good. Taken 11 spots before Tryon in the 4th. Trade up next time Vinny.

JLC you suck. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your stuff in the past but this is a new low. You are completely biased and have no journalistic integrity.

Haven't seen much of Dallas this year. The Skins will compete iIF they bring that intensity from 2007. Especially on defense. Romo will make plays, but he also messes up. We have enough defensive talent, but attacking the line is critical. AZ was never going to beat us with the run, but teams like the NYG and Dallas can.

On offense, I think they are doing the right things the last couple weeks. Two keys for me. No turnovers. TDs when in the red zone.

Anyone know what kind of D-schemes they have seen to date, Philly's has not changed in a decade, everyone in the NFL knows what you are facing against the eagles, cover two and pressure the qb. So don't try that. I think you play a 2 Deep rather than leave the CBs on the island.

THE POST RESPONDS TO CERRATO’S ACCUSATION
Posted by Mike Florio on September 22, 2008, 8:33 p.m. EDT

The pissing match between the Washington Post and the Washington Redskins continues.

The Post has responded to the accusation of Executive V.P. Vinny Cerrato that Jason La Canfora had accused the Redskins of tampering based on comments made by Cerrato on Friday regarding Raiders coach Lane Kifffin.

“Jason did not ‘charge’ anyone with anything,” Emilio Garcia-Ruiz said in a post that was posted on the web site of the Post. “He called the NFL’s public relations staff last week to ask how the league’s anti-tampering rules would come into play if Vinny Cerrato answered a question during his new radio show about a player or coach under contract to another team. Sports radio hosts are often asked these sorts of questions, and we were curious whether Cerrato would be limited in the way he could respond by virtue of his position as a team GM.

“Jason did not make any sort of complaint whatsoever. (In fact, reporters cannot charge teams with violations of NFL rules. Only other teams can file charges like tampering.) He referred to Cerrato’s questions about Raiders coach Lane Kiffin only to provide context for the question he was asking. He did not write about the issue.

“We called the league today to confirm that Jason had not charged the Redskins with tampering. Here’s what NFL spokesman Michael Signora had to say: ‘Jason LaCanfora called our office and said that Vinny Cerrato was talking in specifics on his radio show about the Raiders’ coaching position. Jason wanted to know if that could possibly be a tampering issue. Jason has been told that there is no general prohibition against publicly talking about another team’s players or staff. It routinely occurs throughout the league.’”

That said, there’s a chance that La Canfora was playing the passive-aggressive game here, mentioning the Kiffin situation and pretending not to know that the rule clearly permits general discourse about players and coaches from other teams in order to kick up a dust storm that generally would make the Redskins look foolish for putting Cerrato in a situation that could invite accusations of wrongdoing.

And in saying that, we’re not defending Cerrato. We’ve criticized him over the years as much as anyone. But we know a little indirect poop-stirring when we see it, and we think that there’s a chance La Canfora made the inquiry hoping that it would get back to Cerrato, and strike a nerve.

When behind play smart and fast, go no huddle, and make them bigol boys have to job up the field. I want to see their hands on their hips when our guys get in the red zone.

"Ironic that the paper that brought down Nixon is spinning this story involving JLC."

Man, you gotta be kidding me! What a huge story! The editors at Washington Post must have been in strategy sessions all day trying to figure out how to spin this to save their reporter!!!

Funny you would compare this to the Nixon cover up. How moronic. You people don't have a clue about journalism. You expect the post to give a free pass to a front office that has been the laughing stock of the NFL. It pains me to say that as a Redskins fan but JLC doesn't have a stake in the redskins and how they do on the field. He calls it how he sees it which is fair and unbiased. You are expecting him to be the mouth piece of the Redskins which is not his job. All you do is spout the word of Vinny and Danny boy. Ask yourselves how the Redskins have done since Snyder took over the team? It has been terrible. Lucky to get to the playoffs three out of 10 years. Not a great track record. Why shouldn't the post highlight why they have done so poorly over that time. I think you can point to one person (well maybe two) and that is snyder and the way he has chosen to run it into the ground almost. I hope he has learned from trying to run the redskins like a fantasy football team and realize that keeping draft picks is the way to win a championship.

Jason is a grand standing, stab in the back.... D-bag. The blog can live on without him.

His BS battle with Cerrato knows no bounds. I e-mailed the Jasno last week, whereas he would have answered in the past, I got nothing. When this blog started, Jasno was hip, cool, offered some light banter, this and that, a few pokes at Gibber, and so on. Now he just is loaded for bear like Cheney with a cocktail or two, swinging drunken haymakers at shadows with some sort of Napleonic complex, fighting against the team, looking for any angle to grind his boot heel into people.

He hated Brandon Lloyd too and from the looks of his play in Chicago, the dude is not a 100% slacker as portrayed by Gibbs and Canfora.

Jasno needs to return to his former light hearted self. Success will find or follow him or it won't, using unamed sources to stir up crap and crank calling the NFL league office like some Jr. high tattle tale is not the kind of stepping stones to success he wants.

I read the tampering stuff and have one conclusion: JLa had no reason to call the NFL office plain and simple. If you look up NFL tampering rules on the internet they are plain as day. If JLa had a brain he'd figure out there was no tampering and shut his pie hole. Period.

I haven't been able to watch the win over Az except the highlights, but it was quite nice. A shame that Taylor won't be able to be utilized during the Dallas game. I hope our DBs will smack the light's out on TO. That would be beautiful to see.

It's amazing so many here don't get it...
if you don't care for JLC's reporting, DON'T READ IT!!!
Zeke, you and a few others get it: JLC is REPORTING (a process that consists largely of asking people questions). It's laughable some of you here think he was somehow trying to "stir up" trouble for the team. I don't hate JLC and I don't completely hate Cerrato, but trying to blast this feud out via his new radio show is kind of desperate.
If Cerrato is doing a good job, the coverage will be "better." If we were a winning team in this modern era, JLC's stories would be different. But our terrible record of late draws a certain kind of questioning. I for one WANT somebody with access (JLC, or any reporter really) asking the tough, critical questions. We get enough puff pieces from the Redskin-owned press. I want some behind-the-scenes stuff, and I think many of us here agree. Seriously, if you don't like it, READ SOMETHING ELSE!

I would think Journalism 101 would be to check the rule, check your contemporaries, and then if not sure, ask the league. As the editor mentions, everyone knows commenting on other players and teams happens all the time, and it's not tampering. JLC knows this, as he's held himself out to be knowledgeable about tampering enough to have written about it before. He was trying to stir stuff up.

I think JLC just lost any remaining credibility he had with this fan base. Put him on high school sports and let Barry Svrluga run the show. Svrluga did an amazing job the last few seasons with the Nats Journal.

NICETRY ... if JLa had written a story about nothing except what was in his own imagination ... thats not reporting. But he wrote .... NOTHING!!!!!!

It was Vinny who made this into a story. Not JLa.

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | September 22, 2008 9:40 PM

He wrote nothing, because he came up with squadoosh! He poked the bear, and it stayed asleep. Are you that dense? His effort crosses the line btween investigative and finger pointing. The NFL quote from above "Jason LaCanfora called our office and said that Vinny Cerrato was talking in specifics on his radio show about the Raiders' coaching position. Jason wanted to know if that could possibly be a tampering issue." This is a guy on a witch hunt. For me the jury is out on Vinnys success. But in his defense, to bring this to light is to let REAL FANS know that the guy they are more loyal to than there own team is out to get a guy that has the teams best interest, or at least he is trying, maybe we will see. But beside the point.

Thats what Dallas wants us to do. Got to show them things they have not seen to this point. Anyone know what kind of D-schemes they have seen to date, Philly's has not changed in a decade, everyone in the NFL knows what you are facing against the eagles, cover two and pressure the qb. So don't try that. I think you play a 2 Deep rather than leave the CBs on the island.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 22, 2008 9:19 PM

Actually, Philly hardly blitzed at all in their game vs. Dallas. I think Jim Johnson will call a very different game for the rematch.

You can't play coverage against the Cowboys because they have the oline to give Romo time and skill positions to beat most coverages. You have to pressure the QB and can't be afraid to leave the corners on an island. Give Romo and co time to get in a rhythm and you're surely going to have to win a shootout. I don't think the Skins have the offensive firepower to win a shootout. If the Skins win, it'll be something 10-3.

Jason La Canfora is an awesome reporter, and this proves it. He's on his grind, doing his due diligence. If the NFL had busted the Skins for tampering and he wasn't on top of it, he would get flak from his editors.

There's nothing wrong with him doing his homework. There was no wrong doing, so he moved on. For everyone out there that knows nothing about journalism (seemingly a lot of you, judging from all the comments), this happens all the time!! Reporters are watchdogs. It's Journalism 101, people.

Jason, keep up the good work. I, for one, appreciate your tireless reporting and The Post's coverage of the team. Go Skins.

Vinny and Larry don't do that and you never knew it happened. Vinny made the story. I agree if I looked at it the way he is I would get mad, but vinny also should know that no matter what JLC said to the NFL only the Raiders could have called for a formal complaint.

JLC could come to them with a video tape of Vinny meeting with Romo and a big bag with a money sign on it. Dallas does not file & claim nothing happens.

Its a extreme sarcastic example but you get the idea.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 22, 2008 10:07 PM | Report abuse

I've had a little time to think about this whole episode.

Jason is a reporter and should report the news and investigate matters that may be newsworthy. Tampering is newsworthy. Accordingly, Jason should investigate incidents that could constitute tampering.

That said, Jason should not have had to consult the league office to realize that Vinny's comments regarding Kiffin would never, ever, ever be deemed tampering. Either Jason played dumb and wanted to needlessly stir the pot, in which case he is childish, or he does not know what tampering is, in which case his competence is questionable.

Also, for those of you who are bashing fellow posters for being too dumb to realize the difference between a reporter and a fan, you are apparently too dumb to realize why fans might be pissed if someone seemingly tried to get their beloved team in trouble with the league. Fans are going to pissed at people who try to get their team in trouble, or who take actions that could get their team in trouble. Is that a difficult concept to grasp?

Finally, does anyone really believe that Jason is an objective reporter? Being critical of a team and/or its leadership does not make you biased or a poor reporter. Criticism is a part of objectivity and part of Jason's job. Moreover, Jason does praise players and members of the coaching staff. HOWEVER, Jason takes far too many personal swipes at Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato. Jason attacks Snyder and Cerrato about the most trivial things that have no relevance to the franchise. Jason often writes about Snyder and Cerrato in a very sarcastic, bitter, and childish tone. Moreover, Jason tends to focus on Vinny's bad decisions and minimize Vinny's good decisions. Guess what? Being too critical isn't being too "objective," it's demonstrating a lack of objectivity (i.e., bias).

I would encourage Jason to avoid taking personal swipes at Snyder and Cerrato. His credibility rests, at least in part, upon being perceived as a neutral, objective observer. Getting in little jabs at Snyder and Cerrato might make Jason feel better, but those petty slights work to his detriment as a reporter.

In my opinion, it is time for Jason to move on to different things. He's a decent reporter. His blog is great. He is probably a decent man. But, this thing with the Redskins has run its course and it's time for him to begin a new chapter.

Posted by: Dylan | September 22, 2008 10:08 PM | Report abuse

JLC has always played this role of the plucky underdog against the evil empire of Dan Snyder's Redskins. This couldn't be further from the truth. JLC has repeatedly made articles using sources such as "an unnamed source" or "unnamed person inside redskins Park". These sources are usually followed by some seedy or negative rumor about the state of things. If JLC can constantly call Vinny out for bad personnel choices, Vinny now a member of the media can call JLC for vindictive and transparent agenda against the redskins.

HERRERA, KAWAKAMI NEARLY RUMBLE
Posted by Mike Florio on September 22, 2008, 8:49 p.m. EDT
The situation in Oakland would be hilarious if it weren’t so damned tragic. And though we’ve generally laughed at suggestions that the NFL should seize control of the franchise for the good of the league, we’re starting to think that maybe a hostile takeover would be a good idea.

Here’s the latest development. With vultures circling the still-coaching carcass of Lane Kiffin, Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News nearly got into a fight with Raiders exec John Herrera, one of the few members of the organization with whom owner Al Davis is now speaking.

By way of background, someone from the Raiders distributed to members of the local media last week a hard copy of an ESPN.com article that was critical of Kiffin. It is widely believed that Herrera is the person who distributed the article, and ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday that the article was disseminated at the express direction of Al Davis.

The video of Monday’s incident is pasted below. The good stuff comes after Kiffin is finished speaking.

All we can say is wow.

Dylan, that last post made a lot of sense. I won't jump to the recommendations at the end, but the rest was well said.

JLa did nothing 'wrong', but he does need a look in the mirror and needs to ask himself if he is doing this for the right reasons? If he is, no problem. But I do have this sense that there are petty motivations underneath it and he's best off letting them go.

While the Skins FO has been petty to an extreme, it doesn't excuse JLa from losing sight of what his job is ... and isn't.

JLC obviously can't formally charge the Skins with tampering, but he certainly can tattle. And it seems that what he was doing.

Anyone who believes JLC didn't know the rule on tampering when he called the league office is claiming JLC is lazy reporter who refused to look up the rules, and has written about tampering in the past without understanding the subject.

Either JLC is incompetent (which we all know isn't the case) or he was playing the passive-aggressive card and trying to intimate to the league that the Skins may be tampering just to further his small-minded squabble with Cerrato.

No doubt Vinny has an ego and has helped keep the squabble going - it takes 2 to dance. But don't be so naive as to think JLC doesn't have an ego and is blameless. How many beat reporters brag "I haven't talked to the GM in 3 years, and I don't need to in order to do my job."

Ben Bradlee (former Post Executive Editor who briefly turned it into a world class paper) used to come down to the Sports desk on NFL draft day (back when it happened on a weekday - different era) to ask who "we" had gotten so far. John Feinstein got seriously on his wrong side by responding that he didn't know the Post drafted football players.

A lot less "we" and a lot more "them" makes for better reporting. JLC stepped in it with this one, but his job isn't to be a cheeleader for the "beloved" home team either.

Posted by: je suis un pizza | September 22, 2008 10:16 PM

Gotcha. If JLC really has lost his objectivity, then that's an issue the Post has a responsibility to address. If that's indeed the case, I'm sure they will.

I do find it kind of amusing though that people are so quick to "vote with their dollars" when it comes to a newspaper. But when it comes to our loyalties to sports teams, we'll take any level of abuse and keep coming back for more.

So essentially, the editor lied about why JLC called, because the NFL office clearly stated that what was said all along was correct. JLC called the NFL office telling them(tattling) that Cerrato had talked specifics of the Raiders coaching job on the radio, and asked if they could be charged with tampering. It was such an out of the blue call(in other words, not normal as you claim), that the league office THEN called the Skins front office.

Quite simply, as long as JLC is working there, and the Post is lying and covering up for him, I will not read the Post.

No, it's not sarcastic. First off, I've been a Redskins fan my entire life, through the good (3 SBs), the bad (Heath Shuler), and the ugly (the Shane Matthews Era).

I'm sick of all you people who think it's the job of the Post to be the cheerleader for the Redskins. Jasno tells it as it is, and if you read his posts, you always see him praising Zorn, Campbell, Cooley, Jason Taylor, etc. He's not going to suck up to Dan Snyder, and nor should he.

Danny is obsessed with controlling every aspect of our beloved team's publicity, to the extent that he thinks he's running some sort of fascist regime where free speech is a thing to scoff at.

Let me guess: you haters are probably the same people who were calling for Zorn's head after week 1, but now you're all Horny for Zorny. You're the ones who send the annoying Redskins chat questions to Wilbon in the middle of April (oh wait, you guys boycotted Wilbon, too). You're so quick to cancel your Post subscriptions (because, you know, information is, like, overrated) when you don't like the Redskins beat reporter so that you can "hold them accountable," but meanwhile you've probably lined Danny's pockets with cash for the last several years despite having to deal with Jeff George, Bruce Smith, Steve Spurrier, Deion, Adam Archuleta, paying to attend training camp, etc. etc.

Classy.

Other reporters that have been critical of the Skins don't seem to have the same problems that JLC does. Ryan O from the Times, for example, or Kelli Johnson from Comcast.

They might even talk to Cerrato in helping them doing their jobs, not brag about having not spoken with him in years.

By letting his ego get in the way of developing at least a working relationship with Cerrato, JLC is not doing the best job he can on the beat.

Get a clue. Journalists ask questions. And yeah, sometimes to stir up the pot. So what?

Unlike some of the bozos on this board, they try to get facts before making accusations. If most the people posting here tried to get a gig at a REAL paper, they wouldn't last a day. Include yourself there.

Someone asccused me of defending Jasno. I've worked in the media my entire professional life and yes, I tend to defend journalists against ignorance, prejudice and venality.

Lots of people come after the Post and Jasno. Some because they feel he's unfair. But many, I suspect work for the Redskins and are either doing the bidding of the FO, or doing what they think the FO would want.

Then, as indicated by the many Far Right Posts here, many people never forgave the Post for getting that crook Nixon out of the White House.

And the funniest thing? All the Jasno haters are helping him KEEP his job. A blog is supposed to stire things up and keep people inetrested. And his bosses just look at the numbers of contributions here and smile and say attaboy.

And anyone who thinks a good paper fires reportes because the people who he coves are angry at him is utterly clueless. It's a badge of honor.

Nonsense. That's Larry Michaels job. Reporters who get "too close" to the people they cover--like Fox News and anchors interviewing candidates--are the bane of journalism.

It's not a popularity contest. There is no need to be antagonistic and if a source is cooperative, most reporters aren't.

But the Redskins, from all I can see, are about as cooperative with the Media as the CIA. They want "news" reported by themselves their own way. A free press is a nuisance to be controlled or eliminated.

Allegedly, a critical ESPN article on Lane Kiffin was circulated amongst local press reporters at the behest of Mr. Davis. When one of the reporter's asked Kiffin about the article, Herrera, a Raiders official, adamantly denied the allegation. This is the (near violent) confrontation with Herrera and that reporter caught on video.

Is he soooo good at being a GM that he has all this free time to talk smack about reporters that are much smarter than him and know a lot more about football than he does? Vinny Cerrato is the worst GM in football, and the only reason he has a job must be because he cleans Dan Snyder's pool or something. He should go back to co-hosting Cold Pizza or whatever stupid show he was on, and it's time for us to hire a real GM.

Contrary to popular belief, one does not have to be a Snyder devotee in order to believe that Jason has made mistakes. I do not approve of Snyder's meddling in team affairs, I think Snyder can be immensely immature, and Vinny's track record is spotty. Moreover, I don't want Redskins beat reporters to be blind cheerleaders who try to get access by kissing Snyder's rich behind. But, I'm still critical of JLC's childish ways.

Fans shouldn't be forced to side with either JLC or Snyder/Cerrato. Some of us see that both "sides" have some vices and some redeeming qualities.

Finally, do you really want to compare Snyder to facists because he wants to control press coverage of his Redskins? Every group, business, and celebrity would do just about anything to control how they are perceived by the public. If you owned a business, would you try to do the same thing. You probably also wouldn't look too kindly on people who criticized you, your business, and your management of your business.

You're saying it's nonsense for a beat reporter to be able to have enough of a working relationship with a GM to be able to talk to him about the team? Are you going to defend JLC, as a beat reporter, for bragging about having not talked to Vinnie in two years? Would you say that to do the best job he could as a beat reporter does not mean he should have a working relationship with the GM so that he could talk to him? Do you think JLC talked to Cerrato and asked him directly if that was tampering? Why not go to the primary source?

No one is saying JLC should be in Cerrato's pocket, but a decent working relationship like Kelli Johnson from Comcast or David Elfin from the times has, would only help him do his job better.

How does less access or less information make for a better reporter? You see Ryan O from the Times making critical assessments of the team without these same problems. What's the difference between JLC and every other Redskins reporter that can do their job, and even criticize the team, without all the drama popping up around them?

Here's what NFL spokesman Michael Signora had to say: "Jason LaCanfora called our office and said that Vinny Cerrato was talking in specifics on his radio show about the Raiders' coaching position. Jason wanted to know if that could possibly be a tampering issue."

But the Redskins, from all I can see, are about as cooperative with the Media as the CIA. They want "news" reported by themselves their own way. A free press is a nuisance to be controlled or eliminated.

From all you can see is the key point. And where do you get all of your information on from? JLC!!

It's funny, the Times and other subscribers all have taken a hard line on their opinions of Vinny and Dan but it doesn't show in all of their writing. JLC's bias against the front office and certain players such as Portis is evident in everything they write. For example, JLC talks in tomorrow's paper about Portis getting his car painted and then says "But, he parked in the spot designated for Rock Cartwright". Why is that pertinent to the story, other than to try to take a veiled shot at Portis. Does anyone want to know what parking spot Portis parked his truck in. But it was his text message buddy Rock so he had to put it in there to allude to Portis doing something wrong. Again, he does little things like this all the time that grate on the nerves of people who want news about the team.

Newspapers have two types of writers: Columnists and Beat Reporters. Columnists offer their opinions on certain situations and the general sports landscape of the city. Wise might write about the Skins today, Caps tomorrow and Wed about United and the Nats at the same time. He'll write about facts/events and his opinion on those facts. You may like it or not and then you have the choice to read him. I like Mike and always read him, but I don't like Sally Jenkins and never read her articles. The Beat Writer is different, he is the day to day source of the team and is supposed to take a neutral stance on the team and relay to you information about the team and it's players. He's not supposed to let his personal opinions or his likes or dislikes of certain people get in the way. JLC does let those things get in the way of taking a neutral stance on any matters of this team. Now, if they promote him to Columnist tomorrow then that's one thing, but until that happens he needs to realize what his role is and that the people of this city only want him to do his job and no much else.

Oh for gosh sakes - SHUT UP! Everyone! Cancel the Post, stop coming to the blog, whatever!

Two points - first of all - how many of you are actual journalists? Working on a major beat for a major paper? It's utterly amazing how everyone has an opinion on just how a journalist should do their job.

Second - how many times, on your job, has your boss said - "You should have thought of that!" - If you're really good at what you do, you cover all the angles, not matter how ridiculous they are, and you don't hear your boss ask that question.

He didn't write a damn story about it, and I'm sure that the NFL does not need a Washington Post beat writer to tell them if Vinny or whomever is tampering.

So you don't like Jason - fine, great, whatever - live with it or get your news elsewhere. As someone said, he wrote a great article on the defense yesterday, and his coverage of the Sean Taylor shooting and its aftermath was impeccable.

What's the difference between JLC and every other Redskins reporter that can do their job, and even criticize the team, without all the drama popping up around them?

Posted by: je suis un pizza | September 22, 2008 11:53 PM
-----------------------------------------

The difference is that JLC is an immature young man who takes things personally - a bad approach in this business - and lets the slightest confrontation (like the small back and forth he had with Joe Gibbs one day) define him.

He should be writing business briefs.

Why is Vinny allowed to speak in the first place? Is he soooo good at being a GM that he has all this free time to talk smack about reporters that are much smarter than him and know a lot more about football than he does? Vinny Cerrato is the worst GM in football, and the only reason he has a job must be because he cleans Dan Snyder's pool or something. He should go back to co-hosting Cold Pizza or whatever stupid show he was on, and it's time for us to hire a real GM.

Posted by: Mike | September 22, 2008 11:44 PM

Jason, how many corny names like Rob, Dan, Richard, Lou, and now Mike, are you going to use? Just sign it JLC, we all know you're on here trying to save your job anyway. You deserve whatever you get, you crossed the line by potentially hurting the team.

Those of us "Bozos" who criticized Jason before we heard from Cindy had every right to do so. Please lie to me and tell me you do not engage in speculation on a daily basis.

I have a real job, doing real things in the real world. So your comment that most of us would not last a day at a newspaper is not particularly hurtful.

I love how so many "bozos" (to borrow from your lexicon) SPECULATE that anyone who says anything critical of Jason is a Redskins hack of Extremeskiner and vice versa. Attack the messenger, not the message?

If newspapers feel it is a badge of honor to stir things up for the sake of stirring things up and pissing off readers, it is no wonder newspapers are about to go the way of the dinosaurs. Newspaper reporters that enjoy getting a rise out readers probably live miserable lives.

It's CRAZY that people are ripping JLC apart for being a "hater" when he takes Vinny Cerrato and Dan Snyder to task, because he happens to have the guts to go after the league's most childish, terrible, control-freak, know-nothing owner this side of Al Davis and his trained monkey who has nothing better to do than sit on the air for four hours a week on the radio station Snyder bought (oh, nothing like the low-pressure football president gig that allows for tons and tons of free time to go be a radio star). And why did Snyder buy the station? TO SILENCE HIS CRITICS. He's a marketer, and he can't stand it that he doesn't control the "message", since facts keep getting in his way. He's a petty infant and he's ruined this awesome football team. You fools are mad at the WRONG GUY.

The Danny wants to control all. Hence why he created his own radio network, then bought out every other sports show in DC. He's got a monopoly on skins radio and critics.

Next he'll shoot to control all print media. Ugh, Vinny is a bad GM, we all know that. Let JLC do his job, let Vinny hopefully not screw his up too bad and hopefully we can win some games in the meantime.

Why don't all you message board losers go back to extremeskins and have a circle jerk to Skins highlights.

JLa's coverage of the Skins over the past couple years has been far and away the best out there. Some of his articles, backed by stats, and numbers have been fantastic. Sure, a lot of the stuff he has to say is not great about the Skins, but the Skins been the laughing stock of the league for the last decade.

His article about the out of control spending and the correlation to no wins was the best article I have ever read about the Skins as a whole. Does is suck reading that about your team? Sure, but it is all backed with facts.

Facts like we have not had a home playoff game in almost a decade. Matter of fact we have had one home playoff game at FedEx ever. That is pathetic, much like this controversy.

Posted by: Clinton | September 23, 2008 12:35 AM | Report abuse

I've read RI from the beginning, and I've always thought that JLC had some kind of personal problem with members of the FO and ownership. His dislike of the FO comes out pretty clearly every year through the season as he extensively criticizes FA moves, draft picks, and overall personnel strategy. There has been plenty to criticize, but there hasn't been nearly as much attention devoted here in RI to personnel success stories in my opinion. And when there is an individual success story (like Cooley) that gets attention from JLC, this does not seem to reflect positively on the FO strategy. However, when there is a bad personnel move (Llyod, for example), we get 20 extra posts about the poor personnel strategy of the FO in general.

Although he seems to like many of the players personally, in my opinion JLC actively dislikes the 'Skins organization as a whole, especially the leaders of the FO. I think we all have to realize this, accept it, and move on. Now, the WaPost should decide if this affects his reporting. We all know that news orgs don't like to assign beat sports reporters to FANS of a team because this affects their objectivity when reporting. What about assigning a reporter who actively DISLIKES the organization they are covering? Doesn't this affect a reporter's objectivity as well?

PS: I don't read extremeskins, don't know what that even is really.

John D,

I think that's where perceptions differ. IMO, something under the Washington Post header for which someone is paid to do is news. Let's be 100% honest, this isn't a blog. A blog is a back and forth between the writer and the reader for which a topic is thrown out and then discussed. Last year, when they were looking for a 2nd beat writer at the Post and JLC had to take on more writing he said he wouldn't be responding to the blog as much. So now he simply doesn't respond, so in essence this is a daily update on all things Redskins with some of his own personal things put in like soccer and such, but there isn't much of that anymore. Cindy Boren puts up news from the Post daily, giving us updates from other writers as well. This once upon a time blog is just a daily update of the Redskins.

I don't agree with the accurate part of your statement about the Redskins, especially when he tries to talk like he knows about football. I know about football and listening to someone like him try to break down a defense because he watched film one day with a backup is comical to me and at the same time insulting. I wouldn't read a computer book once and try to enlighted Bill Gates on computers and JLC shouldn't do that to his football readers.

My main point is, with him writing a blog and making his feelings on the FO and certain players known so well, it makes it almost impossible to not see through what he's writing and know his agenda.

At my job we had to let a good sales rep go because his attitude was hurting others production and creating an environment that wasn't productive to all. In a sense, it was just time to move on for him and get a fresh start somewhere else. I know he'll be successful there. And I think if Jason moved on to another paper or beat he'd be successful there as well, but I do think it's time he got a fresh start and we as Redskins fans and readers got one too.

Yeah, that's an obvious conclusion. The hundreds of angry posts are all from employees who happen to be working the graveyard shift at Redskins' Park. Ridiculous. I would bet you that many of the pro-Jason posts under dubious names such as Dan, Rob, Mike, Lou, etc. have been Jason himself trying to lobby for his job.

Since I don't know of a person who thinks much of the Washington front office, it would be fascinating to see the IP addresses of those people defending Danny Snyder and Vinnie Cerrato.

I'm guessing those posts all came from Redskin park.

One last thing... this is not a "blog". I don't think people understand the difference between a blog and a message board. But then, I don't think people understand the difference between an NFL team and the Redskins, either.

Por Favor Hombre!,

Posted by: Anonymous | September 23, 2008 12:54 AM | Report abuse

Here's the problem I have with this whole situation.

Why did JLC call the NFL offices in the first place if he wasn't trying to cause trouble?

Mark Maske doesn't know the league tampering rules and he's at the Post? The Sports editor doesn't know the league tampering rules? Wilbon doesn't? Wise doesn't? He supposedly has NFL executives who responded to him in seconds when Vinny announced a radio show but he couldn't find out tampering rules from them?

We all know why he didn't go to any of these people. He was trying to make the story. That, IMO, is taking it too far. Sure, there was no story in the Post, but that didn't stop the NFL offices from calling the Redskins about the issue.

It was uncalled for and outside of the scope of his job. I would never ask for a man to be fired, especially with a young family and the economy the way it is, but he should be disciplined and possibly transfered to another beat.

Everyone who has ever contributed to this blog should take a moment right now and read this:

Jason La Canfora Must Go.

http://www.playerhatersball.com/2008/09/carnage-continues-vinny-cerrato-vs-la.html

La Canfora wanted Cerrato to get stuck with a tampering charge, so he played narc and figured if there was a violation, he could get a story out of it. The Post notes that he didn't write about the issue. Of course he didn't. There was no story. Once La Canfora found out that there was no tampering, the story was dead. You can be guaranteed that there would have been a story had the NFL said, "yeah, that's probably tampering."
I'll also take issue with the "he referred to Cerratos questions about Raiders coach Lane Kiffin only to provide context..." quote. That's crap. La Canfora could have used any sort of hypothetical to ask his question about what constituted tampering. Instead, he chose a very specific example, which shows that it was used to see whether that specific statement was a violation of the tampering rules.
La Canfora tried to create a story. He failed. La Canfora probably did what he did with a smirk on his face, hoping that something would stick against Cerrato. Maybe it wouldn't have resulted in any penalty, but a public rebuke or any embarrassment that La Canfora could have provided for his arch-nemesis would have probably been viewed as a victory.
We've established La Canfora's pettiness and complete lack of professionalism (I once described how he goes to work dressed like a frat guy who's late for a 10:00 a.m. class), but to shift blame back to the Redskins for a bit, this is exactly why you don't give a live radio show to your sitting general manager. Everyone saw something like this coming, it was inevitable. Jason La Canfora is an idiot, but so are Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato for fostering an environment that led to Jason La Canfora's idiocy to ever become a big story.
So what should happen to La Canfora? I can't imagine his Post editors are happy about this, despite their public show of support. It might not be a fire-able offense, but a move off the Redskins beat is probably the best thing the newspaper can do at this point. Might the paper's editors resist that so as not to lose face in their never-ending battle with the team?
As for the Redskins, they have to be even more furious with La Canfora and the Post than they already were. What can be done? Could the Redskins ban Jason La Canfora from the grounds? I'm not even sure if that's possible. But the punishing of one petty act with another petty act doesn't make any sense. (Which is why Vinny Cerrato is probably considering that very option.)
It's just all a mess. And it should never have happened in the first place. Vinny Cerrato never should have gotten that radio show. It was a bad idea when it was announced and it's even worse now that there have been two shows. He should have stuck to his office, scouting every college WR in order to take 7 of them next draft, getting excited about every over-the-hill free agent and feeding grapes to Dan Snyder while he gets his pedicures. Just like old times.

I for one don't see anything wrong with the radio show Vinny has. I mean come on, the same things could be said for couches who do radio or TV show's. This is a good way for fans to get an idea of how things go from the redskins stand point, not a reporter’s point of view

Agreed, but JLC brings it on himself.

No love here for all the failures of the 'skins at the hands of Snyder and Cerrato over the years. However, if I were them I'd be frustrated that there is not more time devoted to success stories. It must be tiring having a reporter with a vendetta against you and your organization trying to find any possible way to criticize you under the guise of "reporting."

That's why this "blog" should be renamed to "Redskins Vendetta."

I'm not going to read the 400+ comments (maybe a few), but to me I'm thinking, 'What's wrong with JLaC?'

Why is he digging? Is he hating on Vinny? The radio show? What? Everybody knows Lane Kiffin will be fired and the rumor of him to Syracuse was already out there. He was just asking if it was true and pointed out the reason why he was connected to him.........

I can see if this were on the politics front, but this is Football. Lighten Up on the reporting. No one will be bombed or go to war or lose money. It's football.......

Can we get an impartial or pro home team reporter? This stuff has been going on for too long. We don't sign on here to read about negativity. I'd rather look at the team through rose colored glasses than see a dude always trying to bring us, the team and owner down. Sheesh. I thought this was a site for the fans.

Posted by: mark | September 23, 2008 7:19 AM | Report abuse

While it's apparent that Jason was trying to catch Vinny doing something, it is the job of the beat reporter to sniff around things like this. Jason was just doing his job, in this instance.

Here's the larger issue: beat reporters - whether they cover sports, business, etc. - should not have blogs on which they convey their true feelings. The job of a reporter is to be objective and to give us the Who, What, When, Where, How and Why, not to give us their personal take.

Unfortunately, through Redskins Insider, Jason has told us how he feels about Skins management, making it very easy to read between the lines of his news stories anytime he writes about Snyder, Cerrato or Gibbs.

As someone who was the #2 editor at a major US-based publication, I truly believe the blogging/reporting link is the issue. It is why the SportsBog works and Redskins Insider often does not.

Posted by: RWSkins | September 23, 2008 7:24 AM | Report abuse

Could you please either leave town or just stop writing about the Redskins at all? You've sucked for quite some time now to begin with but this crap is just ridiculous. I don't need to read the veiws of a homer by any means but you're so blatantly negative all the time that you embarrass yourself as a "professional" journalist.

Whether you like Cerratto or not, you crossed way over the line. Shouldn't be suprising to the editors, who essentially hide your blog to begin with, that this is the first time I've read a damn thing you've written in quite some time.

I've always wondered why you've clung to the bottom dwellers and third stringers of the organization. Now I realize it's because no one who actually contributes to the team wants to talk to you.

Posted by: TC | September 23, 2008 7:24 AM | Report abuse

Um, no, I said he asked on a "hunch", hence he had familiarity with the rule. Tampering is subjective anyway, there is no definitive situation. As much as you hate JLC, he did nothing wrong. There is nothing to get "caught" with. If he lied about it and wrote a story about how the Skins tampered, then you'd have a case. As of now, all everyone here is doing is spewing hate.

Hate to say I told you so -- but turns out my feeble use of Ockham's Razor yesterday yet again correctly demonstrated what actually happened re: the "tampering" charge.

As for the intentions and implications behind JLC's actions, think of it this way: Your boss calls you into the office and tells you that a co-worker, whom you have had previous disagreements with, told him that you spend your lunch hour blogging. The co-worker then asked the boss if this would be considered improper. The boss told him no, that as long as it was during lunch hour and not an inordinate amount of time or the blog was not of questionable nature, that it was fine.

Now, hearing this, what would you think about your co-worker's intention in "asking" your boss this question about your behavior? Would you think he was just being curious and therefore consider it innocuous? Or would you think that the guy was trying to get you in trouble with the boss? I know what I would think.

Conclusion: JLC was trying to get the FO in trouble with the league; it was not an explicit accusation, but an accusation nonetheless. He resented Vinny for the radio show, for the "lie" about Taylor, and for his lack of access. What little access he did have, I'm sure will be gone now -- just as, in the example above, you would likely distance yourself from your co-worker and hide whatever you do from him. Not a healthy relationship at work, and not one conducive to presenting unbiased information on a team you are charged with covering.

I've already thrown the towel in on the Post's political "reporting". I can just go to the MoveOn website and get the same political analysis there, that I would here.

But I've always enjoyed the Post's sports, and that's why I come. For real, this stuff is petty and stupid. But it amazes me that even in the world of sports, the Post is able to dig up agenda-driven reporting...can the Post find some objective reporting on ANYTHING?

anyway...much ado about nothing...onto DALLAS!!!!

Once again I was very pleased with our play in general, particularly JC's play this game and having comitted no turnoovers through three. That is just huge for him. I heard a number of Arz players talking about how much respect they gained for him. Antrelle Rolle who has had somewhat of a diappointing career based on where he was drafted was talking about how he was surpirsed by his play particularly his poise and understanding of what he was doing running the plays.

Redskins Insider stinks because JLC is a Ravens fan and has had an axe to grind with Snyder & Cerrato for too long. Trying to expose Vinny by calling the league, even to make an "inquiry", was a total d-bag move. It's time for JLC to go. The guy doing the official Redskins blog is obviously a real fan and his work kicks JLC's behind anyway.

Since it happens routinely it's something a sports reporter should know about without having to A.) Call the league office and B.) Mention Vinny and Lane Kiffen SPECIFICALLY.

For all those wanting a cool blog check out Matt Terl's fan blog on Redskins.com I think it's awesome, it's by a fan for the fans.

In the service I used to pay $125 a quarter to have the Post shipped to me overseas. I'm glad I don't spend money now for a paper that tries to get my team in trouble.

Posted by: Chris C. | September 23, 2008 8:22 AM | Report abuse

It is funny how the NFL's recollection of JLC's call points to the fact that he was trying to make up a story...

This moron needs to go. No question about it.

Flound, as usual, I'm with you, but moving the convo towards football.

Obviously the Dallas defense presents a signifigant challenge, I think that the Ware/Samuels matchup is one to watch, as well as the Rabach/NT for Dallas matchup as well. I think that the Redskins have an advantage in the TE vs LB, and the WR vs CB matchups as well. Getting Campbell time to throw is going to be HUGE. I'd like to see Portis more involved in the passing game, and Betts more involved in the running game.

If Kelly and Thrash were able to contribute that would be huge.

Defensively, I think that shutting down Barber is the first order of business, and then rolling the safety towards TO is next. Whitten is goign to cause problems no matter what...

I've heard the possibility of a Cowboys blowout mentioned. Of course as a Skins fan, I recoil at this. Trying to think objectively, and remembering the awful NE game last year, do you think this is a possibility? From watching the Skins defense thus far, I feel there is a definite improvement in personnel and play calling. Pass defense in particular seems more sound, with players demonstrating better fundamentals of coverage and tackling. Also, I've really enjoyed the way Blache has called his schemes. The use of their strength position -- safety -- has been masterful. I don't know, I didn't expect a 52-7 last year even against the Pats, but this year I feel that Blache's D will not get blown out. I feel the game against Girls will be competitive -- rooting for the Skins of course, but if they don't pull it out I think they will lose by less than the spread.

Posted by: Ed | September 23, 2008 8:47 AM | Report abuse

This has been brewing between the two of them for a couple of seasons now. JLC's frustration level has been spilling over into his columns all year. He was obviously extremely upset at being put on a wild goose chase after Gibbs resigned, and could not get anything right on the coaching vacancy story. He could not get the Taylor story broken, and did not have the roster cuts until after ESPN and NFL Network. His "hunches" have been off, and there are numerous other stories that he has missed on. When a story breaks that has passed him up, there is almost always a subtle shot at Snyder and Cerrato included in his next blog or Post story. This "Insider" cannot break a story,or get any meaningful insight to the team, and is obviously pissed about it. Cerrato on the other hand is obviously loving it, and will continue needling and intentionally seeing to it that JLC always gets the short end of the info on any breaking story regarding the team. With this latest "tit for tat" spat, this blog has officially been rendered useless and I, along with obviuosly a lot of people, am done.

Posted by: Chris | September 23, 2008 8:48 AM | Report abuse

If JLC called the NFL office specifically to ask if Vinny's comments constitute tampering, then he wasn't using it to provide context as the editor alleges. To me this seems like a slimy thing to do and it looks like the Post is backing JLC up by saying he only mentioned Vinny to "provide context". Meanwhile in the direct quote from the league official, JLC called specifically about Vinny's comments.

Posted by: Bart | September 23, 2008 8:48 AM | Report abuse

From the Times:

part of an effort that limited the Cardinals to 18 fourth-quarter yards

I was unaware that the defense shut them down to that extent. Impressive.

On the upcoming game, I think that getting pressure on Romo is key as well. He's a little Favre like, in that he'll throw some balls up for grabs.

With all the attention that Cools, and Moss will get, ARE/Thomas could be in for a big game...Offensively, I could very easily see the Redskins scoring some points, but I worry about the defense. Dallas's offensive line is just HUGE.

I will say it again you have to smack barber in the mouth right out of the gate, do not let him build confidence or he will wear your defense down.

We held Barber to 43 yards in the first game and -6 yards in the second last year so we can stop him.

So, now that all of you haters have been proven wrong, you're going to latch onto another weak argument? Go back to the Cowboys message board from which you came!

The edginess and tone to those articles are meant to be "eye-openers" and are great in that light. Very enjoyable. I, however, do not believe he can handle an "Insider" blog any longer- he doesn't have access to anything and can't break stories from the "inside". He's a great column writer. Agreed. If there is one thing I have learned from spending about 5 months of my life playing madden its that I nkow little about how to opperate a successful D. So I have always relied on my O dominating TOP to win games, we are going against a dangerous team so I would really want to do that, the key is picking up smart easy yards on 1st so you can run on 2nd and throw to CC if needed on 3rd.

Found this little nugget on ESPN, looks like the NFC East is getting alot of respect.

Yes, the balance of power has shifted from the AFC to the NFC, but we need to be more specific. The NFC's Super Bowl representative is coming out of the East. I've tried to defend the Colts, Chargers and Jaguars as possible late-bloomers this season, but all three of those teams are seriously flawed. The Colts have looked one-dimensional on offense, and that dimension (the forward pass) hasn't been reliable. As we discussed earlier, Jacksonville appears to be thin on the defensive line, which is a remarkable development when you consider that it was the strength of the defense in 2007.

And since most of us can agree that this league is all about the quarterback, I think it's safe to say that Tony Romo, Donovan McNabb and Eli Manning have been the best in the league through three games -- and Jason Campbell has been solid in his team's two wins.

On Sunday night, the Cowboys won a game in which Romo didn't play particularly well (by his standards). It's a pretty strong indicator when you can dominate a good team when your best player doesn't have his "A" game. And speaking of off nights, did anyone spot T.O. during the Cowboys' 27-16 victory?

One of the league's top receivers has two catches for 17 yards and the Cowboys roll. C'mon, don't act like you didn't see a huge game from Miles Austin coming.

Running backs Marion Barber and Felix Jones gashed the Packers throughout the first half, and then Romo and Austin lit them up in the second half.

The Cowboys left no doubt as to who was the superior team. But the celebration was short-lived because their most bitter rivals, the Redskins, are headed to town.

"There's never a chance to catch your breath in this division," linebacker Bradie James said. "If there's a better division out there, I haven't heard about it."

This statement is bull****! It covers the technicality of the accusation toward JLC but, the accusation wasn't that JLC filed a complaint, it was that he accused Vinny of tampering. I don't care how you say it JLC was accusing Vinny.

Anyone who has ever read any of JLC's work, knows JLC can't stand the Redskins and especially the front office. He never has anything good to say about the front office (Danny & Vinny) and I for one am sick of it. It makes me even sicker (if that's possible) to know at what lengths JLC will go to to make Danny &/or Vinny look bad. It's a good thing there isn't a blog for the Larry Michael's show.

I don't have a problem with taking JLC to task for something like this. There are probably better ways to go about it.

However, I don't see a lot of fair and balanced criticism as far as JLC's attempts to smash the FO vs. LM's attempts to bash JLC directly.

It seems as though the FO love to flaunt the fact that they have direct access to the players, etc. That LM show is something awful. Does he work directly for the skins or no? All of his opinions are positive and not very often backed by facts/details. It bothers me that this is what I am expected to watch.

I like B Mitch, frankly, because he calls it pretty straight. He does have an ego, which can cloud his judgement, but he also is honest and has his own opinions and isn't a plant like LM.

If you're going to bash JLC, because you're concerned with journalistic integrity, etc, then you have some other people that you should include on that list.

Posted by: time to go, JLC | September 23, 2008 10:39 AM | Report abuse

Wow, what a lot of tirades.

My understanding is that a reporter's job is to find information that may be difficult for the average reader (fan) to acquire on their own, and to explore issues that would be of general issue.
In this case, I think it totally appropriate for Jason to contact the league office seeking clarification. Suppose on his show, Vinnie starts gushing about Ocho Cinco, and goes so far as to say 'he'd look great in burgundy and black'. The first question, I'd have is how far a GM/EVP can go in public comments enticing a potential free agent/tradee to consider the Redskins. While most league officials, agents and players know what is and what isnt tampering, I dont, and I suspect most fans dont. And thats why I value and rely on reporters like Jason to get a straight answer.
More generally, I think Jason is raising a very reasonable question about the appropriateness of a team's senior manager hosting a radio show. While other team's officials may do this (from above, one reader said it was 5), it does appear to be the exception and not the rule. And thats probably because there is inherent tension between the role of the press, whose job is to understand and describe what the ball club is doing, and the team's management, which has strong incentive to conceal the teams approach, and at times, be purposefully deceptive. There are probably most, who dismiss Vinnies show of having much credibility -- it is good fun entertainment. But if you dont dismiss it, then I think its legitimate to understand what journalistic rules are in play -- and what constraints does his role as EVP place upon him.

Sadly JLC has completely lost his objectivity and his personal venom for both Cerrato and Snyder is all we can see in both the blog and his TV reports. The Post needs to reassign him and have someone more ojective such as Jason Reid covering the team. The whole thing with JCL calling the NFL offices is a big embarrassment to the Post and they should do something about his behavior before they lose all credibility in covering the Redskins.

I'm not a Cerrato fan, but it was Snyder's call to give him the two-hour radio slot twice a week on his radio station . If Cerrato crosses the line into tampering, another team will report him or the NFL will know about it through their security team.

Posted by: wizfan80 | September 23, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

mongo's correct in everything he posts, but the problem is this: JLC made the call, got the "information that may be difficult for the average reader (fan) to acquire on their own", and did not report to us that the league views what was going on w/VC's show is harmless (unless I missed that report). The perception of JLC having a personal grudge w/VC is further perpetuated. Once JLC, armed w/info straight from the league office, determined that he couldn't catch VC red-handed with tampering, it wasn't worth writing about. There was zero regard for the fact that you (the average fans) may have interest in knowing that there's nothing wrong with what VC was doing on his show. Because he couldn't bust him, he never took the opportunity to write about his new found knowledge of what is or isn't tampering- even though he had the info! Am I missing something? What he did here is the exact opposite of what mongo claims he wants from JLC- like info on how tampering rules work in the NFL. He didn't report on his conversation with the league because their answer is not what he was after- which was probably to damage VC's reputation. It's obvious that JLC is completely ineffective at this point.

I am glad JLac called the league.. How bizarre that a GM or any rep from a team can be on a radio discussing the potential firing of other personnel.
What is interesting is that the League contacted Vinnie or how else did Vinnie know. Did the NFL also tell Vinnie he is walking on thin ice with his radio show and personnel discussions.

Posted by: JTX | September 23, 2008 11:59 AM | Report abuse

JLC was simply doing his job by inquiring. It's called unchartered terriroty - having a GM do his own radio show. If Vinny were doing HIS job (instead of hosting self-serving radio shows that have no real value) as the de facto GM of this organization, then maybe we wouldn't rip up Brandon Lloyd's original SF contract and give him a new one, or sign Adam Archuleta, or cut Derrick Frost.

Oh, Jason, you poor, sweet dupe. It's all clear now. You've been played by Danny Boy and My Cousin Vinnie. The whole Cerrato Radio Show was a set-up, a long con designed to get rid of you, and you walked right into the trap.

1. The Set-up. Danny and Vinnie set up a bogus radio show in which Vinnie will dispense his brilliant musings.

2. The Hook. In carefully choreographed dialog, George "The Cryptkeeper" Michael walks Vinnie into a discussion of Lane Kiffin and his upstate New York travel plans.

3. The Tale. Feverishly monitoring Red Zebra from his basement, Jason hears the tidbit and can't believe the good fortune that has fallen into his lap. Utterly unmoored by his obsessive hatred of all things Snyder/Cerrato, Jason rushes to the nearest pay phone, calls the league office and recounts Vinnie's malfeasance.

4. The Sting. Snap, the jaws of the trap slam shut. Moles in the league office report Jason's call to Danny. Danny rushes Vinnie onto the air to report LaCanfora's perfidy. Skins Nation turns against Jason. The Post is forced to reassign him to minor league hockey, high school swimming and tiddly winks. Meanwhile, in their lair high above Raljohn, Danny and Vinnie rub their hands together and cackle maniacally.

JLC, you need to cool it. Let's hear about what happens on the field and in practice.

Since I'm sure we wont here from Jason himself on this issue, I would suggest to the WP editors that we don't here from him at all for a while. He either has a negative agenda, or was too stupid to realize what he was doing. Neither is acceptable for someone in his 'position'. He also wont find anyone Redskins Park at all willing to give him the time of day, or anyone at the Post I imagine, for quite some time.

Go with Reid if you must...

Its one thing after another with this guy. If he was my employee, I wouldn't want to even hear him say good morning if by the grace of God I didn't fire him. Honestly I would suggest that Skins fans everywhere make such a stink on the various blogs that we finally get rid of this ***clown once and for all.

There is every indication that JaJa doesn't get it even now. What will the, at best clueless, at worst vindictive, little smarm do next? Share the Skins playbook with another team to see if the Skins plan to "cheat"?

JC you gotta get out of town. You showed you cant cover the team, because of your commits about VC. You cant have a personal grudge and cover a team. Its that simple bro. The Washingtonpost has lost all creditablity.

JLC. You're FIRED!

LaCanfora has clearly let his personal animus toward the Redskins interfere with his objectivity and should be fired. The personal animus may well be justified. But that really doesn't matter. What he did was outrageous and unprofessional.

Cerrato needs to go!! Talk about a hack!!

Unfortunately, Jason seems to have let the idiot get to him and it may cost him his beat.

To bad when it's Vinnie that needs to go!!

PRETTY CHICKEN SH$T THING TO DO FOR A BEAT REPORTER WHO HAS ACCESS TO THE TEAM AND FACILITY. THERE HAS BEEN A LONG TREND OF NEGATIVE REPORTING BY JLC WHEN IT COMES TO THE FRONT OFFICE.

Posted by: jp | September 24, 2008 12:07 PM | Report abuse

JLC posted in his Chat House piece that his job was to determine why this was a losing franchise for the last fifteen years. And, during that time two guys were here. So, it sounded like he had finished his job in that all-that's-not-right with the 'Skins is Dan Snyder and Vinny C's fault.

That's some prize-worthy reporting there. (sarcasm font.)

JLC is doing a bad job here. It's not reporting, it's paid hating.

I've left RI...(came back to comment on this)...and am weaning off the POST. Notice how Sally hates on the 'Skins after a loss to her beloved Giants, then gets lockjaw when the 'Skins win a few games? Coincidence? Hardly.

I just want to remind everyone how much Jason meant to us when we were dying for information about Sean Taylor. The first person and website I came to was here. Jason was absolutely essential and combined the right amount of non-biased information and home-town pride to make me check him every single hour.

To those of you who are asking for his dismissal - what you want your only Redskins information to come from Larry Micheal?! The bigest homer in the whole world that never went to journalism school and doesn't know sh**t about actual football?

This message is for Andrea, your message is
loud & clear. I am sure there is animosity
b/w JLC & Cerrato, but hey that's constructive critism that Cerrato has
to accept. Win or lose. The same goes
to JLC, whatever he writes about the Skins,
there will be subjective opinions. As for
Larry Michaels, he's just a "voice" for
the Skins, though he does come across as
a "Hack".

The S_B tried to get the Skins in trouble and get some of our draft picks taken away.

So he is not a Skins fan and thinks he can do a better job than vinny. I can deal with that. But this move of him calling the League is one steaming pile of _ _ _ _!

vinny called him out, albiet in an sloppy fashion, and now JLC has a steaming pile all over his face.

He is out of line and should be reassigned at the very least.

He has a vandetta as if Vinny turned him down in the mens room.
