A REALLY REALLY POSITIVE SIGN (UPDATED)

Les Carpenter, who is working the story for us in Miami, heard rumblings that Sean may have opened his eyes.

I have not been able to get that confirmed but just heard from a team offical that Sean is now responsive, which is obviously a turn for the best. I will continue working away to get more details, but this is obviously a turn for the better after Sean spent much of the day in a "non-responsive and unconscious" state.

As the person put it: "Finally, the first good news all day." Let's hope it's the first of more to come.

UPDATE: Vinny Cerrato just called us with confirmation.

"He was responsive to the doctor's requests to squeeze his hands and showed facial expressions. The doctors were very happy about that," Cerrato said " ... Two doctors came and told us they were excited about that."

Cerrato also confirmed my earlier reports about Sean being "non-responsive and unconscious."
Cerrato said: "We'd heard all that, and what they told us was to hope for a miracle."

Cerrato said Taylor is still in critical condition but did not have many details beyond that. Vinny said Sean was in surgery for seven hours.

Les Carpenter reports from the hospital there that the mood has changed dramatically around there and people are suddenly in much better spirits.

Just got off the phone with Richard Sharpstein, Sean's lawyer and a family friend.

Richard said they are saying Sean is in stable but critical condition and remains under constant care in the ICU.

"This was a great ray of sunshines, but we're not out of the woods yet," Sharpstein said from the hospital. "The doctors are stil guarded about the diagnosis. Until he comes to and speaks and recognizes people, they are going to be guarded, but this was obviously a very positive sign and a recognition of a command."

Redskins radio has Sharpstein on - reporting he squeezed a nurse's hand but nothing about opening eyes. Also, he gave a more detailed account about the break-in.

We'll get more news shortly on a conference call with Vinny Cerrato, who's in Miami. Sean's mother, Donna Junor, told the Miami Herald website that he had squeezed a nurse's hand this evening.
"I am happy, I am hopeful, but I really don't know what else to say," she said.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around what's happened to Sean Taylor.

It just takes the air right out of the room.

Prayers for him, and for his family and team mates.

Very good sign.

I'm an Eagles fan, but this is obviously not a situation for rivalry. A few months ago I was sitting in that same hospital trauma center in Miami after a cousin of mine got into an accident, so I knw exactly what his family is going through right now.

Best wishes to everyone involved. Want to see him back on the field as soon as possible. Granted, I'd like to see him standing flat-footed as Reggie Brown burns him for a TD. But that's not the point, at least right now.

Makes me wonder, with fingers crossed that the good news continues, who would want to be a Bills receiver coming over the middle against our secondary this week? Those are going to be some angry players playing with serious purpose for their recovering buddy Sean.

From the Miami Herald:

The alarm at the home had not been activated...After the shooting, Taylor's girlfriend tried to call police from the house line, only to discover the line had been cut. She had to use her mobile phone to call 911, which delayed response time, said Redskins spokesman Benny Cerrato.
====================

Wow. Hate to draw conclusions but this definitely sounds premeditated. And more precisely, something out of a mafioso movie...

I hope they catch the SOB(s) who are responsible...

Then again, I hope the authorities catch them before Sean's network of family and friends get their hands on 'em...

Stay Strong Sean!!

this is awesome. he's a strong guy, if anyone can survive this assault it's Sean Taylor. Maybe he can still make it back for the playoffs? In all seriousness though I think we'll all be extremely happy if he makes it and still is the same individual, which this awesome news seems to suggest is seemingly likely

Posted by: jrak | November 26, 2007 7:27 PM | Report abuse

wahoo 2x, you're probably right, but I'd also like to point out that of all the teams in the 2007 version of the NFL, the Bills probably understand best what we're going through right now. There's sure to be some recognition of that on Sunday.

A ray of sunshine, yes that's what this news is. Keep praying, keep pulling for Sean.

Reading the Miami Herald's reporting today about this tragic incident has just been another reminder to me of how "lucky" we are to have the quality reporting that is The Post.

I can't count how many times in their story about Sean that they switched from first person to third person, without attributing the sentiment/quote to anyone...terrible transitions, etc.

In any case, just goes to prove--yet again--how spoiled we are by the great J-Work that is performed each and everyday by the Posties!

Any word on the assailant(s)? These guys need to be brought to justice. I heard that this is the 3rd time his house has been broken into in the last couple weeks, and that they left a knife on his bed last time. I hope that if, God willing, he can pull thru that he gets outta town. Clearly some bad elements in that city have it in for him.

A quick thank you/shout out to J La C and the WAPO Staff for the updates throughout the day. I appreciate the effort you guys have put into keeping us Skin-minions informed.

With religious based comments like offering prayer being contraversial in today's society I appreciate the fact that many of the regulars on this post sacked up and offered thoughts and prayers for ST and his Family without fear of the potential smack talk that would follow. Makes me proud to be a Skins fan knowing that most of us have our priorities straight.

Posted by: kmckinty | November 26, 2007 7:41 PM | Report abuse

By the way, multiple media outlets are quoting this blog in their updates. This is literally the front line for Sean Taylor's condition unless you are a doctor, family member or team official. That is really something to be proud of. God bless JLC, Cindy and the rest that are working tirelessly to keep those of us that are so concerned apprised of the latest. We need to organize a Thank You party or something. Hopefully it can also be a Get Well Sean/Welcome Home celebration. I'll gladly fly in for that.

Awesome news. Been following all the updates, almost expecting the worst but pulling for the best. While it seems he's not out of the woods yet, baby steps help. Here's to a full recovery, best wishes to Mr. Taylor, his family, friends, and nothing but the best to Redskins fans, from a Pats fan in MA...

OT, tremendous job updating the blog as well, very well informed, clutch in time of crisis. Kudos!

Terrific news about Sean. I am a lifelong Cowboys fan living here in DC and was so busy today that I didn't get a chance to learn about the shooting until I took a break in the afternoon to read Jasno's blog. I was stunned. This is beyond our rivalry. I was certainly happy we didn't have to play against him, but I never wish anything as life-threatening as this on any player (or even Dan Snyder). I hope and trust the young fella makes a full recovery.

Posted by: notanon | November 26, 2007 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Steal Standing

Redskins fans in the DC area and everywhere for that matter are thinking of nothing but the speedy recovery of Sean.

I've been basically speechless all day, and this is some fantastic news!

(except this morning when I was about to rip the Post a new one, when they first ran the story...it was basically: Sean Taylor was shot in his home in Miami...and here is a list of all the things he has done wrong in his life...it was a travesty, and a horrific uneducated, and quite disappointing assumption that the Post writers made this morning, which someone else on the staff must have noticed...because they removed most of the negative stuff as the story unfolded...but in the future...Post writers...try not to assume things till you know the facts in the future...anyway...This blog is wonderful...good Job Jason!)

Someone else mentioned something about fasting for Sean...well my fast is not premeditated...but I've just not been able to eat all day. I've got no appetite at all, even with this good news, because this kind of stuff makes me sick to my stomach...I hope they get the scum that perpetrated these crimes. ...... Actually I think it would be much better if Sean's posse got a hold of them first!

Well at any rate, very very good news...but Sean please say something soon...this not eating is for the birds.

Yes, Levity is a way to deal with grief..hahaha

Good luck Sean, you are a rock! You got this!

I really hope this is true! Ive been a skins fan for only 3 years, I never thought I would cry over someone who I barely know but I actually did. I can't believe how the media is bringing up Taylors past. We all have a past some of the things we have done in the past havn't been so great, and we don't want to be remembered for those things but ofcourse tv, and radio has to bring that crap up.
