A Note on Erasmus James' Departure

The cutting of reserve defensive end Erasmus James, which came yesterday, was inevitable, given the fact he was hurt and never came close to getting onto the field with any regularity. James, a super nice dude (despite being a Yankee fan), might have been in on 15 plays on defense all season.

This tracks back a bit to last month, when the team signed CB DeAngelo Hall, and cut CB Leigh Torrence, a special teams stalwart, to make room for him. At the time the Skins were not overstocked with ends, but they did have Chris Wilson and Rob Jackson in reserve and both had passed James on the depth chart. Many players and coaches were stunned when Torrence was let go, especially with James being a guy who could have been cut and re-signed down the road, if need be. (He had been virtually certain to clear waivers at the time the Redskins traded a seventh-round pick for him over the summer.) He was probably the 53rd guy on the roster at the time, and Coach Jim Zorn admitted at the time of Torrence's release that Leigh was not the 53rd guy.

A few days after Torrence was let go, I asked defensive coordinator Greg Blache about his plans for James in the second half of the season or if he saw any reason why the guy should play more. Blache said no and that the only way James was likely to get on the field at all was if other guys got hurt.

Two teams put in waiver claims for Torrence - the only experienced slot corner on the roster behind oft-injured Shawn Springs - and New Orleans got him (a team battling the Skins for a playoff spot). He's no game changer, but he serves a role and the Skins have blown about five chances to down balls deep in oppposing territory since Torrence has departed (That was one of his many former roles on teams. For a club this offensively inept, they can't afford to give away 15-20 yards of field position. The rookie they kept to take Torrence's spot, fourth-round corner Justin Tryon, has yet to make a play and does not get on the field at all on defense).

We'll see if there is any interest in James out there on the waiver wire. And we'll wait as well for an explanation from Vinny Cerrato as to why James wasn't gone long before, and why Torrence still isn't here.

Truth where in my statement or any statements on this did you hear me say that Zorn needs to put his arm around CP? I said I had no problem of him benching CP for practice if that was the issue. Only he needs to step to CP and let him know. Read my statements first before trying to put your words to mine.

This season is turning into a disaster quickly. Not that I think this will happen or even that the 'skins deserve a post season but I have to think Dallas about done with that upcoming schedule. Out of all the teams trying for that #6 playoff spot (#5 goes to Tampa or Carolina) we probably have the easiest schedule behind the Eagles but we play the Eagles so being a 1/2 game behind them doesn't matter. Again, this team is bruttal. How could we possibly draft three pass catchers in one round? That is plain stupid.

Posted by: kmichael76 | December 10, 2008 8:44 AM | Report abuse

Please let it go. This is not news. You are stating the obvious. At this point, reporting on Torrence is like saying that the Redskins (Danny) should not have cut Kenny Watson for Sultan McCullough. It was a mistake, but the Redskins have a lot more ahead of them.

Everyone who watched him give up big pass plays in the fourth quarter of preseason games knows that Tryon is horrible and should not have made the roster to begin with. (I would have kept Matterral Richardson who now has been signed by another team off the practice squad.) I was also stunned that James was not released before opening day (and re-signed later if wanted) to save a draft pick. And the Skins could have cut James instead of Torrence who was an OK but not spectacular player. But none of this is news at this point, even on a blog.

Get it all out, JLC...the Zorn vs. Portis thing--because Torrence is gone. Joe Gibbs left because he knew Torrence was on the bubble. The team is making plans to retire Torrence's #29 in a ceremony at halftime of the Eagles game next week. John McCain lost the election because Torrence's vote is the only one that counts. Jesus is coming back to Earth so he can be reunited with Leigh Torrence...

There. I did your posts for next week. NOW MOVE THE F*CK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But what he says his true. Some of you can't get over that, obviously. And Vinnie has some explaining to do, why James has been kept on the team when he had no chance to play, while a player who was on the field every game was cut.

Hey dumb a$$ you still have not put up any stats to back your Torrence jerk off fest.

How many balls did Torrence down inside the 20?

9 games were played with Torrence 4 without so they had alot more chances, a fair assesment would be to wait until the team has played 5 more games then see if this rings true.

The punter has changed this is a major factor in this as I showed yesterday.

JLC do you need a couple of tissues after writing another dumb a$$ article about Torrence.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 10, 2008 8:46 AM | Report abuse

Listen, I know Torrence may be better than Tryon right now. But you can't claim our punting problems are becuase Torrence is gone. I go to every home game and NOT ONCE did Torrence actually down a ball inside the 10. In fact, I recall watching at least 3 or 4 punts go right by or over him into the end zone. Torrence was not a special teams stud. He was a problem because he let the ball get to the end zone.

Boy this is tough for me. On one side, it kills me to see open warfare between the HC and the star RB. On the other side, I'm LMAO. Couldn't have happened to a better front office duo than Dumb & Dumber...what the heck did they think they were stepping into with the off-season fiasco they had in trying to land a coach? Spagnola remembers how they tried to paint him as unqualified when he turned them down 'cause of their reputation. He took special pleasure in beating us twice this year. They deserve every single solitary drop of Karma they get from their draft picks to player-coach finger pointing to anemic play on the field. It starts at the top and rolls down.

It's an overused SNL joke gone bad now.

Posted by: TheTruth11 | December 10, 2008 8:56 AM | Report abuse

Okay. Really. Reading this post alongside Steinberg's post about Colin Cowherd really highlights the similarities. I'm almost always on Jason's side, here, but this Leigh Torrence fascination has gotten out of control. Leigh Torrence got burned in coverage repeatedly over the years. Any defense who watched film on him knew to throw at him whenever he was on the field. As for the punts not getting downed inside the ten, I haven't noticed a significant change in this based on Torrence's departure. We sucked before, we sucked after. Leigh Torrence is not Antonio Pierce, an under-appreciated player who we thought excelled only because of the system. Leigh Torrence is not Ryan Clark, a small name guy who's a couple years away from being a big name guy. Leigh Torrence is simply not good enough to be a starter in the NFL, and I'll shed no tears over his absence. Was he better than Erasmus James? It doesn't matter - they play different positions. When we cut Torrence, Taylor's health was still uncertain, and keeping our ends seemed to make sense. After all, we were bringing in a corner, so the question isn't who was the worst guy on the roster, but who was the worst guy in the secondary. Is Torrence better than Tryon? Maybe. Tryon apparently has upside, though, whereas Torrence was a known quantity. Maybe Torrence was good for chemistry, but, if that's all he was good for, put him on the cheerleading squad, not on the active roster.

Bottom line: We replaced Torrence with a far superior player. Get over it.

Posted by: crashinghero | December 10, 2008 8:57 AM | Report abuse

Listening to some of you tools on here is rather entertaining. You all think that the top 25-30 guys on a roster is all that is significant? Idiots. The bottom 1/3 of your roster is VITAL.They are the ones that can help steady the ship at times like this for a sorry a%% team like the Redskins. They make up the core of the special teams unit, which determine field position, which is something that this pathetic excuse ofr an offense needs all the help with that they can get. There is NO EXCUSE for cutting a guy like Torrence and keeping James. NONE. It is a freakin' Cerrato blunder at its best, but half of you think it is just JLC grinding an ax? Wake up...this team and organization sucks. Period.

First of all I don't recall Leigh Torrence ever downing a ball inside the 10. I do recall several times when he didn't.

Second of all, Justin Tryon was in the baltimore game at least a couple of times. Don't know if he was ever thrown at though.

Third of all, for as long as you continue this Leigh Torrence is the greatest special teamer and future HOF corner nonsense, the Cult of Leigh will continue to espouse his super-human abilities, and world changing traits which is why I guess, you keep bringing his name up.

So lets have at it boys!

Ask some players about his role as a 4th corner. ask them if they woyuld have kept sorry a## Erasmus James...you want to point to the Rams game this year as to why he should have been cut?....then I guess Smoot's sorry a## should be cut too for the Giants game, letting old man Toomer run by him like that, but you are probably one of those who yell "SMOOOOOT" every time he makes a routine play. By the way, ever read what Mike Tomlin had to say about Smoot?.... and Carlos should be cut for letting Santonio Holmes torch him, and Santana should be cut for letting Terrance Newman out duel him for an INT against Dallas, and Samuels should be cut for letting D. JLC and Torrence must have a love child somehwere. We need to see if "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" by Sir Elton John comes up on JLC's ipod.

No self-respecting writer should be pining for a backup cornerback. JLC forgets that Torrence couldn't cover the opposing teams offensive guard. "Two teams put in waiver claims." Wow. I didn't realize "we" cut Rod Woodson.

Duh

Posted by: duh2mag | December 10, 2008 9:34 AM | Report abuse

A lot of you guys just don't get it...

The major point JLC is trying to make is this is a PERFECT example of poor team management and failure of the front office (Vinny). Though it is not a big name or a big playmaker, role players like Torrence play MAJOR roles on successful teams. Look at say...the Patriots. Mistakes likes these just don't seem to happen on teams like the Patriots.

The second part is the impact it has on the locker room. Yes, the NFL is a business and the players understand this. But, they are human and have opinions and feelings just like the rest of us. When a good locker room guy like Torrence is let go without any real validation it does get to these guys. It takes the air out (things were going well when this happened) and makes them think that they could be next without any real reason. Of course, you don't want anyone thinking they are incapable of being cut but at the same time you don't want these guys playing scared either. Most likely some of you have seen this in some shape or form but imagine at your job if a well liked guy who was doing his job (however big or small it might be) and having sufficient success was let go. Would this have a positive effect on everyone else around the company? Probably not. It would cause a lot of water cooler chat about why Joe Shmo got the axe instead of XYZ rather. It is a DISTRACTION and one that should not have happened!

I know I have thrown myself to the wolves with this one along with Jasno but that's how I feel.

HAIL!

Posted by: Skins211 | December 10, 2008 9:35 AM | Report abuse

Who's right here? No one.

You learn early in management that you praise in public, criticize in private. Imagine if your boss went to the media to announce that you're doing a poor job -- before talking to you? That's just lousy leadership. Zorn screwed up.

But on the other hand, Portis is a complete drama queen. That's part of his charm, but there's a downside to all those years of coddling. He lives inside his little princess coccoon. Any minor offense is treated like someone just bombed his house.

I don't blame either of them. Zorn is in over his head and the pressure is clearly getting to him. I didn't expect him to get to 8-8 this year, so he's overachieved. And Portis is Portis.

The blame here, of course, falls on Vinny and Danny. They've ignored the lines for so long that Zorn and Portis are set up to fail. Zorn can't execute his offense, and Portis' talent is wasted. Incompetence in the front office led directly to this situation -- and continued incompetence will perpetuate the situation. Get used to it, Skins fans. This ain't a football team -- it's a soap opera.

Posted by: diesel_skins_ | December 10, 2008 9:38 AM | Report abuse

What's hilarious is that the Pollyanna contingent of Skins fans who defend this incompetent front-office are going to bash JLC as if he does have an agenda (and I can even buy that he does), but this post is spot on.

Torrence should not have been released, someone behind him on the depth chart should have been released and to me that was either Tryon or James.

People will argue that it was Hall vs Torrence, when in fact it was Tryon vs Torrence, and one was getting significant reps (indicating a certain level of trust from the coaches) while the other was not.

Posted by: keino83 | December 10, 2008 9:40 AM | Report abuse

Skins Fans, lets not cry over a spilled milk. This Skins will be better, maybe not this year. Lets give all the new Skins, including the coach, benefit of the doubt. Give them another year before you bury them.
This Skins can still make the playoffs, but then what? Whats the purpose of making the playoffs when you will exit the first game. We the fans sets up too high expectation for the new coach and practically a new QB. The offensive line is quite offensive and I still don't see any sense in acquiring Jason Taylor, Erasmus James, and Seun Alexander.

I actually just checked this, the redskins have only downed three punts inside the 10 this season, one against st. louis, cleveland and pittsburgh. Play by play doesn't say who did it. God that Torrence was awesome.

Posted by: edward45 | December 10, 2008 9:47 AM | Report abuse

Since the Skins released Leigh Torrence, they've gone 1-3.

Since the Saints signed Leigh Torrence, they've gone 3-1.

Eureka! Leigh Torrence is the NFL's version of Chuck Norris. He doesn't even have to play for his team to win -- he just terrifies his opponents from the sidelines.

Slightly more seriously, the Skins have a pretty long history under Danny and Vinny of releasing popular locker room players. Team chemistry matters. The front office has hurt the team in this respect several times over, including Pierce, Torrence, etc. The NFL is a business, but some teams do a good job of making it feel like family. The Skins try to make it feel like a mafia family.

For all those clamoring for the post JLC said in October about Torrence:

"Special teams really hurt the Skins again. They got crushed in field position for the most part, and that kept an inept Browns offense in the game. Plackemeier has to get better - right? - because the 32-yard punts and stuff were weak. (Leigh Torrence failed to down the first punt deep, which could have turned the tide of the game early.) Rock Cartwright was a demon on teams as always, but those units struggled in critical areas again."

Sure sounds like he was worth all the priase...

Thanks for setting us dorks straight TiredOfLosers. Instead of professing your love for JLC, why don't you come out and tell us how Leigh Torrence would have changed the outcome of the last 5 games.

You know your not the only person who reads the Washington Post and by the looks of the majority on here, we would rather get a new beat writer than give up the paper that most of us have been reading all of our lives.

Here is a better solution.

a. JLC takes a higher road and tries to repair a relationship with the front office to try and get better stories than the constant BS we have to read on this blog.
b. The Post gives us a new beat writer that does not spend all of his time bashing every move and looking for negative angles all the time.
c. Instead of coming on here and calling people dorks and losers, you come up with some actual proof as to how Leigh Torrence is the difference in our season right now.

So fine, we cut James back then, we'd STILL CUT TORRENCE TODAY. What's the difference?

Your man crush on Leigh Torrence is off the charts, dude. He was a below average player on an average team, and he was cut to make room for a guy playing HIS SAME POSITION, whose come up with three turnovers in the few games he's been here. It was exactly, exactly, exactly how it should have gone down. Perfect.

Every time you bring up the name Leigh Torrence, your credibility sinks even more than it already has.

Let the team cut Santana Moss to bring Keyshawn Johnson out of retirement, and THEN you can rail on it day after day after day.
