A Quick TD Cuts Lead to 6 after 3 Quarters

With defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth initially remaining in the locker room with the hip injury he suffered in the second quarter, the Redskins came out for the second half exactly as Coach Jim Zorn must have envisioned it. After receiver Malcolm Kelly was called for illegal motion on the first snap, Washington rolled. Clinton Portis -- held to minus-2 yards rushing in the first half -- gained 12 yards over right tackle, and Jason Campbell hit Santana Moss for a nine-yard gain to get a first down at the Washington 43.

From there, Zorn took a shot, sending several receivers deep against what is supposed to be a weak Detroit secondary. Campbell found Moss on a deep crossing route from left to right, and Moss hauled in the pass behind three Lions defenders, and ran the final 25 yards into the end zone for the Redskins' first touchdown in seven quarters. The 57-yard pass play was the Redskins' longest play of the season, and it cut the Lions' lead to 13-7.

From there, the Redskins' defense -- which allowed Detroit an astonishing 274 yards in the first half -- caught a break. Not only did Haynesworth return from the locker room and appear on one third down play, but the Redskins drew a key penalty. On a second-down play from the Lions' 39 yard line, quarterback Matthew Stafford looked deep to star receiver Calvin Johnson, who was being covered by Washington safety LaRon Landry.

As they battled for position near the 10, Johnson stiff-armed Landry, gaining separation. He hauled in the pass inside the 5, and the Ford Field crowd -- which includes thousands of empty seats -- erupted. But a penalty flag came down, and Johnson was called for offensive pass interference. Instead of first and goal from the 3, the Lions were backed up to second and 16 at their own 29. From there, the Redskins defense held -- and Haynesworth even appeared on the third-and-9 play, which Washington stopped.

The Redskins' next drive began at their own 12, and after Campbell dropped the first snap and then recovered it, he found Moss on the right sideline for a 22-yard gain. After Campbell hooked up with tight end Chris Cooley for another first down, Washington appeared to be moving.

But on a third-and-5 play from midfield, Campbell again looked for Moss, this time on a slant pattern. With Detroit linebacker Jordon Dizon bearing down on him, Campbell threw toward Moss, but Lions safety Ko Simpson stepped in front of the pass for an easy interception.

The Redskins' defense then came up with its first three-and-out series of the game -- with some help from Haynesworth. On third and 6 from the Washington 42, Stafford went back to pass, and the pocket began to collapse. Rookie Brian Orakpo came with a speed rush around the left tackle, and he combined with Haynesworth -- who barreled up the middle -- for a sack.

The Redskins did nothing, though, with the next opportunity, in part because Campbell simply dropped the ball when he went back to pass on second and 10. He ended up missing Moss on a third-down pass. As the quarter closed, the Redskins stopped the Lions again -- this time after allowing one first down -- but middle linebacker London Fletcher suffered a bruised rib, and his return was deemed questionable. Washington took over the ball deep in their own territory -- trailing 13-7, and needing a big fourth quarter to avoid an embarrassing loss.

Snyder looks pissed off in the owner's box. After this game I would hate to be Zorn.

That call wasn't fair. But that's the way that it goes with the Redskins. Luck isn't even on their side. Another crappy season. I wonder why I even watch every week.

All that matters in defensive stats is points allowed.

They allowed 16* pts in Game 1.
*Umenyiora scored a TD on D.

They allowed 7 points in Game 2.

They allowed 13 points so far in Game 3.

Meanwhile, the offense has scored 10 pts** in Game 1.
**Hunter Smith had a special teams TD.

9 pts in Game 2.

7 pts so far in Game 3.

The problem is O, not D.

They should fire Zorn after this game. Really I used to think that they should give him a chance, but it's clear that the situation is getting worse. After three games it's clear that this performance is unacceptable. This loss is unacceptable and I've run out of patience. Maybe firing Zorn writes off the season, but I really see nothing improving. The team keeps getting worse.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 27, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Will Zorn be fired this week?

I completely agree with canning Zorn.

Not as a quick fix, or a sign of impatience as some suggest, but because he has shown he has absolutely no clue what he's doing. And he has no idea how to get done what needs to be done.

The few "senior moments" Gibbs 2.0 had are nothing compared to the total ineptness displayed by Jim Zorn.

Well we had so many chances to get a good drive together in the fourth quarter, but JC had some issues..

Redskins Nation is feeling so low right now... let's not even play PHI, DAL, NYG... we now what's gonna happen. I mean seriously, we've scored 16 points in two games vs Rams and Lions. That is ATROCIOUS.

while I'm not the biggest fan of Jim Zorn at the momemnt, you cannot blame this loss on him or Campbell. 300 yards offense with 4:30 left to go. We are moving the ball. I still think Jim Zorn needs to give up the play calling in the end zone but between the twenty's we are doing ok.

Blame this loss on the defense who got walked all over by a rookie quarter back and a make-shift offensive line.

Defense goal for the next week: get the hell off the field after third down.

Rachel, Rachel,

How many times do I have to explain it to you? TDs are like a jar of cherries. There are only so many in the jar. If you eat them now, you don't have them for later. We're saving all our cherries for the big banana splits -- DAL, PHI. Hang on. Party time is coming.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | September 27, 2009 4:03 PM | Report abuse

all the JC backers will say looky looky at all those passing yards by JC isn't he great? The prevent D is his best friend as it allows him to pad his stats.

You know, i realize Detroit is going into something of a prevent, but you gotta feel that JC is just better in the no-huddle. And yeah, maybe that has to do with him being more in control of the play calling. Whatever it is, why not just try it. You know?

lets look at the silver lining. now we're the worst team in football. it can only go up from here, right? we dont have to expect these players to live up to unreasonable expectations that we've been spoiled to believe in with overpriced players.

Posted by: kman2 | September 27, 2009 4:09 PM | Report abuse

Yeah. I don't know how Zorn can justify keeping his job. I would feel differently if the game were 19-16 or lost to a freak play, but that's just not the case here. They gave this game away and played horribly. They showed no ability to do anything right. The late TD was too little, too late. At this point, assuming that WAS ends up 1-2, it gets harder to see the team doing anything decent the rest of the season. I am reluctantly joining the fire Zorn camp here. The team just isn't playing well or even improving. I support firing Zorn because it's clear that he can't get the job done. Not saying that someone else can, but there need to be massive changes.

The only way Snyder begins the process of recapturing the relationship between the Redskins and DC that existed when he bought the team is for him to show up and take responsibility for the franchise's failures during his ownership. We know he won't do that, but that is the necessary first step. Until he takes accountability, the relationship between the city and team will continue to degenerate and will, eventually, reach the point of black-out.

One of the highest paid teams in the league, players give cadillac facilities and resources and they quit.

Says something about the players.

Head coaches in the NFL shouldn't be required to get players to play. These are pros who should be able to get themselves ready.

As Wilbon says, this is the most dysfunctional team in the NFL.

We've been kicking this can down the road for a long time. They need to clean house completely.

Cause it's going to get worse otherwise.

Posted by: SteveMG | September 27, 2009 4:20 PM | Report abuse

The play of the game was that 4th and goal play. That let the Lions get into it and the rest of is history.

Let the ugly recriminations begin here. Even if the Redskins manage to play better this loss, much like the Rams loss last year, will haunt the team.

And with a winless TB coming to DC next week it is going to get ugly. Whatever the case something, anything, has to happen this week.

um, that's "won"

Posted by: suzannepdc | September 27, 2009 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Zorn is an incompetent HC/play caller and I am now officailly in the fire jim zorn camp.

The pass on three points at the biginning of the game was the start of this loss. JC contributed to the loss in the third qtr.

Time to see if TC is capable of leading this team. Though Zorn will not make any changes because he has no stones!

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 27, 2009 4:20 PM | Report abuse

OK i have taken a lot of heat on this insider for expressing my opinion about it being a mistake hiring Zorn...JC as our QB etc etc....

Well I'm not going to say another word...The Skins have shown my point on the field!

Dallas, Philly fans on this blog in 3..2..1..

I'm letting it sink it right now. I'm with sfskin. I thought about it all week. I thought we could lose, but in the back of my mind I thought there was no way. I still can't believe it, I'm in shock. Lions will be 1-15 this year. I hope to see drastic changes by tonight.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 27, 2009 4:21 PM | Report abuse

C'mon no plays with Cooley down the middle of the field in the endzone...not good.

Posted by: TWISI | September 27, 2009 4:21 PM | Report abuse

And did anyone see how MIN defeated SF at the end of the game? Too bad that that can't happen with Jason Campbell.

Zorn's biggest mistake: trusting the defense.

Posted by: Alan4 | September 27, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Just for one game... ONE GAME... I wish Zorn would loosen the reins on Campbell. Yeah yeah yeah, I know... "prevent defense" blah blah blah. JC is better when JZ isn't trying to be a puppet master.

it's not all zorn. blatche's defense isn't living up to expectations either. there were supposed to be lots of turnovers this year, lots of qb pressure, where is it?

Posted by: coparker5 | September 27, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

F'ing disgraceful. Way to full down betts. ths team sucks ass. i hope the coaches plane crashes and they survive but can never coach a game again.

Sorry bunch of LOSERS!!!!

Posted by: JCB9 | September 27, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

no hail mary??... and you're only 30 yards away.. Not just a chance to catch a batted ball in a crowd but, also a chance to get an interference call!!!!
Every HC in the NFL would of done this.

Zorny wont get fired, though.. Snyder is waiting for 2010.. and is probably seeing an upside of a cr*p team by getting a top 3 Draft Pick in the First Round.

Posted by: whatyoutalkinboutman | September 27, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

I stand behind my team but after that debacle today the Skins are officially the worst team in the NFL with better talent. Yes the Chiefs, Raiders etc. etc. don't have talent but the Skins should be winning games with the talent they have. This goes back to coaching. I'm beginning to think Zorn is in over his head. It's not going to be a bad week waiting for the next game. Yikes.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | September 27, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Considering that Zorn spend the entire game on the sidelines with his face in his little playcalling cards, you'd thing....well, he'd be able to playcall.

And it's time to pull Campbell. I cannot watch another overthrow. If it hasn't been fixed by now, it ain't fixable.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | September 27, 2009 4:25 PM | Report abuse

391 total offense yards with 2 TD's, regardless the circumstance of the 2nd one, is not a fireable offense. I can't believe this game is making people get on the fire Zorn bandwagon. To be fair I agree with the moron moment and not taking the chip shot field goal and still maintain he should let someone else call redzone plays.

however having the 4th rank defense last year. spending 100 million dollars to upgrade it, then having the freaking LIONS go 380 yards on you is a fireable offense.

screw the fire zorn bandwagon, its about time some got out the fire Blanche bandwagon and got it going.

Fire Zorn, Blache...Season is Over!!!
Let's Go Caps!!!!

Posted by: JCB9 | September 27, 2009 4:26 PM | Report abuse

The best looking offensive drive was the one Campbell ran using the two-minute drill. The defense is doing the best they can, but when the other team has a 2 to 1 time of possesion advantage, you get gassed. The offense is impotent. Jim Zorn - the offensive guru - needs to go. Vinny Cerrato needs to go. And Dan Snyder, the reason you can't get any big name coaches - Holmgren, Cowher, Shanahan - despite the giant check you will write them, is the fact that it isn't worth working for an ignoramus like you. I hope you're proud, Danny - you've taken your childhood team and driven it into the ground.

Posted by: fizics95 | September 27, 2009 4:27 PM | Report abuse

Like I have said all along, defenceive coaching is the problem. We used our entire off session to get better on defence. And we did,but Greg Blanch has no clue how to use these players. Its not Vinny its not Zorn its Greg Blanch!

Posted by: gregblanchsucks | September 27, 2009 4:27 PM | Report abuse

No more Campbell please. When the game MATTERED he could not make any plays! The only time he can play well is when they play prevent defense. Campbell is useless. When we need our QB to step up when the game matters he cannot do it.

This loss falls at the feet of Greg Blache the defense was outcoached plain and simple the third down conversion by the Lions after Washington scored it's last TD was huge how in the hell do you let them convert? a rookie QB/ you mean to tell me you can't scheme against a rookie?

Posted by: dargregmag | September 27, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

We can not even stop a HIGH POWERED OFFENCE like the lions. You people have missed the problem from the start of the session. Our defence just SUCKS PERIOD!!!!

Posted by: gregblanchsucks | September 27, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Greg Blache is an idiot...his schemes suck and his team underperforms every week!! Fire his sorry AZZ along with JZ!!!

Posted by: JCB9 | September 27, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Only team in the NFL when losing by 7 points in the first quarter with 29 secondes left let the clock run out. You know that your challenged offensively wouldn't you want to try to get as many offensive plays as possible.

Posted by: mpholmes | September 27, 2009 4:31 PM | Report abuse

So the Skins D can shut down B. Jacobs, S. Jackson but K. Smith runs over, through and around them for 100 yards in 3 quarters?

Blame meter:
Skins D 30%
Blache 20%
Zorn 25%
Campbell 25%

tru dat rachel..
half his stats are prevent D gimmes.. When the D is leaving the middle open to run out the clock and/or get the ball back..
That said...its too bad he wasnt given a chance to throw a "hail mary" easily from the 35... Could of been a huge confidence builder if he was able to pull it off.
++++++++++++

Say what you want about the coaching the players suck AZZ as well. Portis has not only lost a step he can not even read his blocks. On 4th and 1 at the goal line if he cuts the play back he walks in the end zone. This is the problem with a veteran team they are just their to colliect paychecks. Refs sucked AZZ on both sides.

Ok everyone get a grip. This team is (Ihope) like a locomotive. It starts out kinda of slow but gets better every week.
So we lost to the ALL MIGHTY LIONS, its just week three. We can grow from this , This team just needs to hit the bottom(and we are there). We wiil come back, becuse there is no other team I love to watch better then the Redskins.Win or losse iam burgandy and gold for life. So lets regroup and go beat the $h&t out of the bucs.HTTR FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JC defenders please stay away. No yards when it mattered, crap yards in garbage time, don't tell me about his QB rating.

He cannot lead this offense anywhere. 1 pick plus 4 balls in and out of the hands of DET defense.

I predicted a huge victory. I guess I was wrong.

Posted by: zornskins2 | September 27, 2009 4:46 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone see when Jason called his own plays we scored. The problem with this team is it has no coaching. The owener needs to give Zorn all the time he needs(16games) to get it right. Then move on from there.
New coach, new GM and a new system.Lets just sit back now and hope for the best.

Have to go in at 2:00 and protect and serve.Hope its a quiet night, hate to have to shot someone.

If we had a general manager like Bill Parcell's we wouldn't be in this mess. Draft BLUE COLLLAR PLAYERS , guys that play because they love the game. Time to clean house and start over.

Posted by: kenobill | September 27, 2009 6:28 PM | Report abuse

Great half-time adjustments on defense. Nice play on the ball by Horton, almost, despite the penalty.

I'd love to see the defense go on the attack when the other team is pinned back on the goal line. We need to stop giving up 99 and 95 yard drives. We need to stop allowing teams to stay on the field in 3rd and long situations -- the inability to get off the field is where we're losing games. Time to get p....d off, defense. Time to hit somebody. Time to give the fans something to cheer about by whacking a quarterback or some receiver foolish enough to go over the middle. Time to inspire a little fear, defense. Time to get nasty! Can we be nasty? Great defenses are like ravenous dogs who can smell raw meat! Can we be like ravenous dogs, foaming at the mouth, smelling fear?

Why not send in a team of "assassins" on 3rd and long? How's this for a 3rd and long hit squad? Put Orakpo with a hand down, blitz Chris Wilson, move Horton to corner, let D Hall sit back, waiting to make interceptions from the Nickel back position, move Doughty to Horton's slot ...

How about putting in a heavy jumbo package in obvious running situations after a timeout ... use Lorenzo Alexander as a lead blocker, Mike Williams at RG, and Marko Mitchell as the lone wideout?
