A TD for Each Side after a Quarter

The Redskins offense didn't need a fake punt or any other kind of do-over this week to put together a solid opening drive. Instead, the offense was consistently strong and at times spectacular to start Washington's preseason game against the New England Patriots Friday night at FedEx Field. Jason Campbell strung together four straight passes, including one 21-yard gain to a leaping Santana Moss. The seven-play, 69-yard drive ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Marcus Mason with 10:06 remaining in the quarter.

The Patriots' Darius Butler was called for two penalties - illegal touching and pass interference in the end zone - on a pass attempt to Malcolm Kelly. The fouls moved the ball to the one-yard line, paving the way for the touchdown for Mason, who is in his third preseason with Washington.

The Redskins' first-team defense was effective on its first assignment, forcing its first three and out of the preseason. But Tom Brady engineered an efficient 73-yard drive to respond to the Redskins' TD. Brady completed passes of 13 and 20 yards before finding Randy Moss in the end zone from 26 yards out. Brady pump faked and hit a streaking Moss who made the catch over Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall.

The Redskins were forced to punt on their second series after Campbell missed a diving Moss on a downfield bomb and then failed to convert a first down.

Defensive line not getting pressure, secondary looking out of sync and just plain awful.

Posted by: CDon | August 28, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Moss is a beast

Posted by: jm220 | August 28, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

At this pace they might not get 52 but starting to get the feeling they can score whenever they want & not much we can do about it.

Posted by: will_ga | August 28, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Better hope the offense can score this year because the defense doesn't look top five right now.

Posted by: lifelongfan | August 28, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Moss beats everyone

Posted by: Wemiss21 | August 28, 2009 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Good thing its preseason & this doesn't count.

Posted by: will_ga | August 28, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

here goes zorn calling plays like joe gibbs now, at the least the first 1/4 was fun to watch

Posted by: stivic | August 28, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Hunter Smith looks good! LOL

Posted by: ga8085 | August 28, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Run blocking is poor tonight. And that last third-down pressure is exactly why I think Betts should NOT be the third-down back. You need Portis' blocking ability for those third-down passing plays.

Posted by: CDon | August 28, 2009 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Stivic I couldn't agree more. The play calling on that last series sucked

Posted by: jm220 | August 28, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Portis should be cut after the season !

Posted by: redonmyskin | August 28, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I'm concerned about the defense...the secondary is soft. Carlos Rogers thinks he can turn it on...I think not.

Posted by: rickyroge | August 28, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure how an NFL defense can continually leave receivers unmarked.

Posted by: CDon | August 28, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

WERE IS THE ***************** PASS RUSH ????

Posted by: redonmyskin | August 28, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

why the fugg are we playing 10 yards off!!!

Posted by: rickyroge | August 28, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

The D is ridiculously undisciplined. Looks like the Pats are going for the trifecta in blowing out the Skins.

Posted by: ga8085 | August 28, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

15 yard penalty on the bench?!?

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 28, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

they need a stop here

Posted by: rickyroge | August 28, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

The penalties and soft coverage are the two things that stand out to me. They need to be corrected. We're ten yards off the wr's on every play!!!

Urgh...

at least O-sakpo is still hustling, hall is getting schooled tonight, think I will pass on getting his autograph next weekend at the mall

Posted by: stivic | August 28, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

3 is better than 7. D needs to step up their game.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 28, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

It seems every year that the middle of the field is the one place the Skins can't cover on defense, which is probably why they create so few turnovers. When you line a safety up 30 years away from the line and drop linebackers exceedingly deep in coverage, it opens up all these slants and crossing routes, which is Moss is taking advantage of tonight.

Posted by: CDon | August 28, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

If you don't knock Moss in the mouth right off the line, he'll kill ya all day.

Posted by: frak | August 28, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Somebody didn't do a good job of scouting New England. The D has no idea what it's doing out there.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | August 28, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure what's worse, the Skins D or the fact that I am in Paris and woke up at 2am to follow the play-by-play online.

Au revoir.

Posted by: isnadd | August 28, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Hmmm, you guys think they're officially giving Mason his shot tonight? I don't think I've seen him run with the starters before, so hopefully that's a good sign that he's been out there.

Posted by: -swb | August 28, 2009 9:04 PM | Report abuse

I see the Redskins are now utilizing last years hold them to a FG defense. I guess they allow the long drive and then stiffen to let the offense rest. BTW wasn't the DL suppose to be strengh. Well at least it is still preseason. We are still tied for first place for the regular season.

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 28, 2009 9:05 PM | Report abuse

"17 unanswered points." Wrong. 14 were unanswered. If we don't score now, then it's 17 unanswered.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | August 28, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jm220 | August 28, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Have you guys heard Hunter Smith talk? The dude literally sounds exactly like Billy Bob Thorton. Its kinda weird

Posted by: -swb | August 28, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Rare choke by Moss.

Posted by: Realness1 | August 28, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Great job Santana...way to make a play for your QB

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | August 28, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

The third-and-3 call there was exactly the call they should've made on second-and-3. It's like they run some simplified offense all the time except on occasions when they should. Of course, Moss needs to catch the ball. So after the touchdown, it's been nine plays and three punts.

Posted by: CDon | August 28, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

I see us starting plays with J.C. dropping back a zillion steps.

N.E. just hikes back to the d00d in the shotgun.

Seems more efficient, but what do I know.

Good first half by JC and the O. D needs to tighten up a little more.

Posted by: jm220 | August 28, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

why did we go for a field goal on third down in a preseason game?

Posted by: BMACattack | August 28, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Might be a good idea to put this car in the garage. Don't see any advantage starting the first team after half time.

So, Randy Moss proved he is the best player out there, but the Skins put together a pretty nice half as a collective.

Without Randy Moss, its 17-3 Washington.

Hahaha...the sky is falling! The sky is falling! It's preseason and all things considered, they are tied with the Pats at half with the starters for both sides playing, so shut your whiny holes.

Posted by: lavararrington | August 28, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Cannot complain about a half like that, The new 84 should have been out on that last pass to end the half. Take an extra inch or two...

We played a team with much fewer question marks surrounding them, in their 10th year in the same system, who have probably the best QB in the game and some of the top talent at skill positions, to a draw.

We started sharp, got down, and then recovered instead of folding.

I'll take it, ladies and gents. I will take it.

Posted by: freakzilla | August 28, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Usually the Oline wheres down the D. It looked like our D began to wear down their Oline. The D looked horrible in the first quarter. They got some pressure in the 2nd.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | August 28, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I'm good. Campbell will be fine if the OL holds up. Missed connecting with Moss twice, once on the long ball and once on drop. One cost us a TD, the other a 1st down. NO big deal, just get it ironed out in preseason.

The defense was torched by Moss and Brady. Heck, they are good. But I also felt that our defense was less than the sum of its parts. New England didn't have Welker out there and we didn't have Rogers. Blache needs to look at some new blitz schemes, especially the overloads that the Ravens and Steelers use so effectively. Carter playing a lot a LDE.

Cant wait to hear from the Colt swallowers when he's cut...

Told ya'll long ago, Timmy Chang 2.0
AND that rhymes

Campbell looks good, and I hope he has an excellent season and leads us to the playoffs.

Then I hope, when Vinny and Danny want to re-sign him, he walks into Danny's office and takes a dump on his desk and says F U to Snyder and signs somewhere else and becomes successful with another team.

Defense came back, when offense gave 'em some charge and adrenalin..We got a little blood (but not TOO much)from Haynesworth hitting Brady..Better play calling from Zorn, Campbell was a stud (but can he be CONSISTENT??)

Never liked the fade pass in the end zone. But if you're going to run it, you need to teach Kelly how to run it. Last year, he got crowded out in the corner of the end zone. This game, he got crowded out once (the last play before the FG) and didn't turn properly the other time.

*I'll take a half like that from JC17 any day.

*Not concerned about R.Moss torching our secondary - that's just what he does and he's officially uncoverable.

*Friggin' penalities.

*A little miffed at end of half clock management.

*Would like to see a little more from pass rush

*Nice half from Smoot and Tryon (Did I just write that?)

*I didn't know Suishy was Canadian. That plus his previous affiliation w/Cowboys means he should be cut now, immediately.

*Is it just me or does LL30 seem a step late on alot of plays?

*Keep Mason, cut Rock, let DT11 return kicks.

Loved that Kelly tried to one hand the last incompletion B4 the half. the O can throw even if the running game gets shut down (Halleujah). Now practice should be all about the Giants 9/13. Would trip on DHall getting his ass whupped, but that's Randy Moss he's gotta defend.

Marcus is balling. For all the haters who say he can only play against the second and third teamers how do you like him now. That offense line is getting crushed up front. CP will not play the second half with the starters....

a little premature there bud, but it's ok....

Methinks ARE is consuming valuable roster spot.
1)Moss
2)Kelly
3)rotation of Devin, Marko and ARE

Is CP alright? or is it the Pats D?

I have silently been waiting for it the day the NFL ban the wedge. That killed any power returners chances of sticking around. And that makes me MAD!

Posted by: alex35332 | August 28, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Alright, this is encouraging ,we are tied with one of the best teams in football at the half, we stood toe to toe, blow for blow with the Patriots.

JC looked more decisive, the Oline broke down more than I would like, our pass rush was pretty non-existent, did Clinton Portis play in the first half? Or was run blocking non-existent?

Overall the first unit scored points, Marko Mitchell is officially a Washington Redskin, Cooley is the man, I like what I see. Go Skins, Go!

jm220, two things: 1) I'm sorry I don't share your JC love. If he stunk up the joint you would be saying it's only pre-season. I gave him credit for his performance; 2) "Feast or famine" was a reference to the whole offense. The running game wasn't that great and they had three straight three and outs.

OK, DVR recording finally caught up to real time game after FFing commercials.

Some general observations:

Defense, after getting torched early on, made some adjustments and stepped it up at the end of the first half. Seeing Haynesworth putting the pressure on and then putting the hurt on Brady makes me psyched for regular season. I wouldn't want to be Romo, McNabb, or Manning.

Redskins running game non-existent vs. Pats starting D. Was it no blocking or Portis not getting it done, or both?

Also, not too worried about Brady-Moss burning our D. This is one of the best, if not the best offenses in the league and this is a great experience for our D. Brady showed again why he is simply the best. Pats praying he stays healthy cause there's no Matt Cassel backing him up now.

Skins offense finally has some weapons! The youngsters stepped it up. Thomas and Kelly finally look like big threats and you gotta love Marko Mitchell. Also, diggin this Alridge kid!

Some real positives to go away with, but I don't think that they can get too giddy! After all they did lose the game at home.
