Adios Howard

Just wanted to give a huge shout out to Howard Bryant, my partner in crime on this beat the last two seasons and a true friend. Howard is leaving for a tremendous gig at ESPN, one that he could not have turned down.

This beat can be trying and demanding and can cause friction between the beat guys from time to time, but Howard and I had an outstanding relationship both at The Park and away from it. I'll miss hanging out with him every day and sharing this job with him. He is destined for big things at ESPN and, after writing a few stories at camp this weekend will be leaving The Post to return to his native Massachusetts.

I am not at liberty to say much about what's going to happen on this beat. There will probably a few new faces pitching in with the Skins coverage during training camp, and I am pretty certain I will have a new fulltime partner by some point early in the regular season. So until then you're stuck with me. Sorry guys.

Other than that, pretty quiet out here. Ran into a few players but not much else. I hear the Skins and Landry still have a ways to go on that deal - again, anything before late Thursday night/Friday afternoon would shock me - and the top of the draft is still wide open in terms of contracts around the league.

Apparently the worldwide leader has an affinity for WashPo sports writers. First Tony and Wilbon, then George Solomon and Jorge Aranguere and now Howard. When's your offer coming JLa?

Not to mention they got Sage Steele from Comcast too...

Posted by: Gibby | July 25, 2007 1:10 PM | Report abuse

I gotta imagine ESPN is the ultimate promotion in the business right?

Nah, i'm sure JLC would rather stay here giving his honest opinions about the Skins and Danny Boy and fighting off the homers who predict us going 16-0 every year.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 25, 2007 1:17 PM | Report abuse

Congrats Howard! Well done!

JLaC loves us too much to ever leave.

You mean we're not going 16-0?
Doho!

JLC, says he's not at liberty to say...not that he doesn't know something. Hmmmm?

He got the McCardell story right, despite vigorous denials and doubters (i guess its all part of the game).

From the last post regarding AMMTS bleak look at the season. Here is how I see the NFC East

Eagles - On the downslide. No WR for McNabb... is he fully healed? Defense is getting old. Will J Kearse stay healthy?

Dallas - T.O. is a ticking time bomb. New head coach, new offensive coordinator hand picked by Jerry Jones, not Wade Phillips. Romo needs to shake off his bad 2nd half last year.

NY - Eli is on his last legs. No Tiki, Coughlin has lost that team, Shockey is about to implode. Aging Defense.

Was - Stability in coaching staff. Clinton Portis needs to come back from injury. JC's first full year, can he make that leap? Can defense return to form? It is getting younger however.

So, through my rose colored glasses here it is

Was = 10-6
Dal = 8-8
Phi = 7-9
NY = 6-10

I hope the FO can maintain some room under the cap to make some additions during the season as we make a run for the playoffs.

(Kool-aid anyone?)

Posted by: Stumped | July 25, 2007 1:30 PM | Report abuse

I figured they used him on a 'tril run basis' during his 1st take episodes and the approval meter was high enough to keep him.

Is he going to do football?

Bring back Len Shapiro!!

sPeaking of Len. He had an intersting article of 'wouldn't it be nice IFs.......' I agreed with a good 75% of them. You guys let me know what you think......

Jasno,

I'll look forward to Howard's ESPN work.

Sorry to see one of you guys leaving, but if one had to go I'm glad it's you who is staying. Love the blog you run, your print work, and your goofy color combinations on the tube.

burd - Goff is safe. He is the man on soccer ... now, if he ever wanted to work out a beat trade I'd be all for it, but he loves what he's doing.

I enjoyed HB's feature writing. I never felt that he was immersed in all things Redskins the way Jasno gets once camp cranks up, but I learned a lot from HB's articles.

For those who are interested in Bryant's perspective before coming to the Post, there's an interesting interview with him here:

http://www.bostonsportsmedia.com/archives/shots/the_bryant_addendum.php

Jason, if you're reading this, it would be nice to hear HB's perspective as he's moving from WaPo to ESPN.

I'd love to hear Bryant's unvarnished opinions on WaPo/Asburn relations, favorite and least favorite Skins players/coaches, and his conspiracy theory on the Tom Friend article.

Any chance you can post an interview with HB here?

"Bombings Strike Soccer Fans in Baghdad

By KIM GAMEL
The Associated Press

BAGHDAD -- Two suicide car bombings struck soccer fans in Baghdad as they were celebrating Iraq's victory in the Asian Cup semifinal on Wednesday, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 100, officials said.

The victims were among the thousands of revelers who took to the streets of the capital after the country's national soccer team beat South Korea to reach the tournament's final against Saudi Arabia on Sunday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Zebra, that is truly a rosy outlook. The Iggles are better at WR than you give them credit for and their defense is still good. I have questions about the cowboys' secondary (particulary their safeties) and o-line but they are a solid team. I hope you're right though.

from the article LH posted:

abused or vicious Poindexter said. There was little evidence that proved a crime.

Poindexter noted that the physical evidence unveiled so far in the Vick case, while damming to the public, is weak when it comes to actually proving a crime. The treadmills and other equipment found of the property are associated with training fighting dogs, but not illegal themselves.

Some neighbors said they never had a clue that dog fighting occurred on the property.

Earnest Hardy Sr., 56, who lives next door to the property, said he never got any indication of any illegal activity and the dogs in Vick's kennels were relatively quiet. He said another neighbor's dozen hunting dogs made more noise.

"I'd bet 100 dollars that no local resident has attended a dogfight on Vick's property because people would have heard of it," Poindexter said. "This is a small community, and people know things. It's like any country community."

But, he said, blood smears in a room above the garage indicate that dogs fought there, and federal investigators uncovered graves of dogs.

If witnesses link the buried carcasses or fighting to Vick or his associates they will be indicted, Poindexter said.

"You have to have evidence that shows dogfighting occurred in Surry County," he said. "People don't seem to be able to grasp that."

Joe - no swipes at all bro. if you talk to people at the post about the history of any shared beats - specifically the Skins and the White House - they talk almost immediately about the natural difficulty there can be figuring out how to divide work, ego clashes, etc. normal work stuff that arises in any business under intense pressure in these type of environments, working as a duo or team.
I like and respect Nunyo very much and always have and Howard has become a good friend and someone I will probably always be in touch with.

Let's keep it in context. How did those dogs die and how did they come to be buried on Vick's property? Poindexter has not convened a grand jury to investigate nor has he spoken to any witnesses. The indictment makes clear that witness participants have placed Vick at the scene of dogfights in Surry County and elsewhere. It's also clear from reading the indictment that some witnesses are from opposing kennels. The Feds said: "Generally, only those accompanying the opposing kennels and "Bad Newz Kennels'" associates attended the fights." No locals were invited.

"NORFOLK, Va. (AP) --

Iverson, who has had to contend with his own legal issues in the past, said Saturday that Vick should "keep his head up," adding he's not surprised by the volume and intensity of the criticism toward Vick, a fellow Virginia native.

"It's always been like that from day one, since there was sports," the star Denver Nuggets guard told The Daily Press of Hampton Roads, Va. "There was always a bull's-eye on us. Everybody doesn't love athletes. Some people feel like we're spoiled. Some people feel that because we are rich, we think we are above the law; we're better than everybody else."

Iverson gave an impromptu interview Saturday during a celebrity flag football game he hosted in Norfolk as part of his Allen Iverson Summer Classic Weekend.

Iverson, in his interview with the Daily Press, said he didn't think pro athletes should just cut ties with old friends.

"You know, I don't think it's fair to say, 'Stay away from the people you grew up with,'" he said. "It's hard to have a relationship with people once you're already rich. You have to have a relationship with the same people you grew up with.

"But at the same time, you've got to make sure the guys are not hurting you. You've got to be smart enough to know when they're hurting you and when they're helping you."

"I think he's got to figure out and find out if he's got the right people around him, and I'm sure he's smart enough to know who is good for him and who's not," Iverson said.

Iverson has overcome his own legal troubles. Five years ago he was investigated by Philadelphia authorities after allegedly breaking into his cousin's apartment and threatening him with a gun. Iverson was arrested on 14 felony and misdemeanor charges and was later cleared of all but one misdemeanor.

In 1997, Iverson pleaded no contest to gun possession.

BRIGGS DEAL NOT AS CLOSE AS ADVERTISED

A league source tells us that, despite a report in the Chicago Tribune suggesting that the Bears and linebacker Lance Briggs could soon be getting together on a one-year deal, an end to the offseason-long impasse between the two sides isn't as close as suggested.

Briggs, the Bears' franchise player under the CBA, has been tendered a one-year contract that is worth $7.2 million in guaranteed money, if/when he signs it. July 16 was the deadline for working out a long-term deal, but the Tribune reported that Briggs could be signing a one-year deal soon, which would give him a big chunk of the salary as a signing bonus and a promise that the Bears would not hang the franchise tag on him in 2008.

A reader has asked whether the Bears could remove the franchise tag and then sign Briggs to a long-term deal. We suppose that it's possible, but we're not so sure that the Bears would be willing to take the risk that an unrestricted Briggs would make a beeline for the Redskins.

4-12, the dcsween household is 100% ibuprofen on pain relief (plus its a muscle relaxant ... and taste better in the childrens' liquid form). The mrs is convinced that vitamin I is gold; she poo poos acetominophen (sp?). This goes for adult dosing too. [If you really require muscle relaxant, 800 mg. If you have a headache, 600 mg. Anything less is useless.] She pulls out this little book to figure out max dosage for newborns, infants, and toddlers. Plus, they pretty much let you know when the dosage wears off. In the BAD teething times, when its too early for the next dose, we stagger in the acetominophen. I remember something about acetoblahblah being bad for your liver or kidneys or something (hence no good for the post-drinking, pre-sleeping, hangover-avoiding meds).

never forget the power of the angry dragon

Posted by: Anonymous | July 25, 2007 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Old School - I think you are missing the point (from my view, that is).

The point he is trying to make is, in life you gotta have friends. Why make new friends after you 'make it' when more than likely they are only hanging around you for the life and the $$$.

The friends you grew up with were your friends not because you were rich, but because you were yourself and $$ and celeb status didn't matter because you weren't a celeb and you didn't have $$. Why leave them hanging when you have enough $$ to spread around and none of you have to suffer? Why only lift yourself up? That would be selfish in most people's eyes....

I was watching a Comedy show on TV one day. This guy from NY said the funniest but truest thing ever. He basically said...."You're friends' list stops when you graduate from high school, and it shuts off." That's the truest thing. Everyone I hangout with and consider real friends I met during or before high school...

OK, I knew you guys wouldn't relate. This comedy show was very similar to the Def Comedy Jam fomat. Dude was from Brooklyn was just 'keeping it real'. And I could relate. Different cultures, I guess.

I know the further you venture out, the more people you know. This dude def didn't go to college. But, I did! I went to 3 different colleges for extended periods. I got one guy a consider a friend, but he's not in the area anymore.

Its one of those things that either you can relate to, or you can't. I could and it was funny as heck (SJK) because I honestly didn't think about it until that day......

I have friends -- like people who are on the same wave length as me -- that I've known since 1st grade and who I've known for about five years. Frankly, its having the daughters that cause what I consider an interruption in making new friends. When I make a quality friend, they are a friend for life ... and it doesn't really matter the last time I've seen them; we just pick up where we left off. The much harder thing for me is disengaging with people who consider me to be a great friend, but mostly b/c they are sucking the life energy out of me. My limited success has required them moving away.

To get this back to the Skins, think about Sean Taylor. He has some long time friends from growing up. He made a new friend in Ryan Clark.

The point is that you chose what you do with your life and who your friends are. If you decide not to make affirmative choices, that's still a choice. You can choose to live deliberatively or choose to live by default (or some combination of the two). In the end its your choice. [And whatever you choose, it remains impossible to avoid jm220's blog hammer or getting F'ed by chris Larry.]

Nate - I missed your last sentence. I am talking about real friends, not just friends.

The word Friend has been thrown around too casually now-a-days. I am talking about friends you can trust because you know their background since you went through the same things they did. Experinced everything. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

... and I wonder if professional athletes ever think about the courage to change the things they can, the serenity to accept the things they can't, and the wisdom to know the difference.

With massive large bills in your pocket, maybe you can choose to think about those things AFTER your professional sports career ... (or think you can) ...

"Nah, i'm sure JLC would rather stay here giving his honest opinions about the Skins and Danny Boy and fighting off the homers who predict us going 16-0 every year."

You impugn the integrity of many a WaPo Sports journalist now working at ESPN. In OUR last episode David Justice, former WaPo and on the staff of Jim Rome is Burning (a well-known homer), wrote a scathing article about the defensive scheme and coaching staff. There was good ol' David Israel (and most everyone else on the staff) who hated George Allen. Most think highly of Joe Gibbs. Looking at the other coaches (excluding St. Vince AND the always loyal BONE of course) hired to coach this team one can readily see why.

If anything our hero Jason IS NICE TO THOSE GUYS (comparatively speaking)!!! A lot nicer than they deserve if Justice article is any indication. Yet they have known to hammer him.

Old School you are spot on as usual.

4th I can relate. I grew up with people who as we got older took a different road in life. I wasn't going that route so I made new friends who had the same goals and interest as I. You don't think Vick's and AI's friends from the 'hood didn't see they both had potential to make it to where they are? Those two dudes were supa stars in grade school. How can AI be sure they weren't hanging with him as a kid and buying him stuff in hopes of the big payback later? I have seen it happen so many times on the AAU circuit. How many of those guys in their entourages have jobs? They're eating off of AI's plate like he fears others will. How many times has "keepin' it real" gone wrong for AI because of his "friends."

I understand you LH. I thought AI made the point so I didn't elaborate.

You def gotta know who is good and who is bad for you. I dropped a lot of so-called friends once I moved up in social status if thought they were bringing me down. But, the truest ones I have now still are from my childhood. I am the only one I know who I hang around now that went to college. But even though my current friends didn't, they are on the right track in life in general. No one is perfect. College isn't the only way to make it.

I had to cut off family members because they thought they could allways 'barorow' $20 and never repay you....

Like I said above, it's about real friends. Only you as a person (hopefully) know who is being real. You don't have to leave them behind is all I am saying. Especially if you are making big $$.

A perfect example would be Lonnie Baxter. We have mutual 'acquintances' and knew if he was hanging around these guys, nothing good would come out of it. I was saying this to myself when I saw him at the Backyard shows back in '99. It's now 2007 and look at what's happening.....

Also, before I leave. Nas brought his crew up, too. He gave them jobs and record deals. There records didn't sale anything, but they are living a good life. So take it for what is......

LH

took the words out of my mouth.

4th sounds like you have made the right choices.....thats alot of what is all about "leaving all behind" may go to far but in some cases maybe more cases than that... thats the choice and honestly is the road most of us move on to. you just mature, circumstances and life changes and before long you have less in common with all a small few from your past.

celeberties live in a different world riches and fame make friends of any kind new or old hard to get close to for different reasons...but you have alot to lose if you make bad choices either way.

you just have to grow up and have or get your priorities together and live a " main stream life" yeah its boring, you might be selling out the buys from the hood, buts the real world that the vast majority live in.

I grew up middle class and white in a very poor coal mining area in PA. Most of the guys i hung around in childhood and high school, have nowhere jobs , are in jail , a few a dead,.... just because we played pick up basketball or little league baseball or high school football and talked about getting out of this stinking town i never really felt i owed them anything or felt a need to go back anytime. It was a stage in life and was fun and sad, happy, frustrating and everything a childhood can be, but i left it behind because i knew if stayed in one place, "that place" it would bring me down.

Just one man's opinion.

Good ending with stupid epilogue but good book for the series. That's all I'll say about that.

Good luck to HowBry at ESPN! I have to say the WaPo Sports section is in fact in my humble opinion one of if not the best overall for major national and regional newspapers. Don't know what it is about DC but it produces outstanding local media.

Kost - Cycling is well advanced compared to Major League Sports.

The key thing is that they do Blood testing. If they did blood testing in MLB or NFL, boy would we regret it....

Do you guys remember that article that named Portis and 3-5 other unnamed redskins were going to a doctor that wasn't really a doctor and was involved HGH? That was the same year CP added like 15 pounds of mscle and he looked thick....

Cyclists have to give there whereabouts 365 days a year. They're subject to unannounced tests at any time. Lance's ex-wife was in labor, and they were about to leave the house to go to the hospital, and he got the knock on the door from doping control people. Had to pee in the cup before he could take her to have the baby.

Posted by: 4-12 | July 25, 2007 10:16 PM | Report abuse

kost - true but I've heard the technology has been steadily improving year to year and that sometimes it depends on how you read the results.

I don't think the Tour officials are any different than NBA et al. You don't shti where you eat. You don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. And other platitudes. In other words, Armstrong was probably the best thing to happen to cycling so if his tests were questionable well err on the side of the $.

"That's why the Tour is falling apart. I hate to say this but it has to call Lance Armstrong into question."

SO SORRY DUDE THEY CAN'T TOUCH THAT. READ HIS BOOK. I happen to know a great deal about testicular cancer. Guess what they do to the offending bad boy or bad-boys? EH? GG Liddy better hope his aren't "gigantic" as he likes to say. In Lance's case he states that he had Coriocarcinoma. TC is a curable cancer but NOT coriocarcinoma. ONLY 5% survival rate. Final coffin nail: they find it in your brain. This describes Lance's prognosis at the time. Imagine 5% survival rate?
Its in his brain! The idiot let it go too long.

Here was his response to the treatments and the disease. A nurse brought one of those breathing exercise devices where you pull the ping-pong ball up in a long tube by inhaling. He grabbed it from her and pulled the ball all-the-way-up and held it for an insanely long amount of time. The he gave it back and said, "I'm Lance Armstrong, that's what I do!" It sounds arrogant but what he was in effect saying do what you want to me with your treatment, I don't care where the disease is and how far its metastasized. When I get out of here I am still going to kick some ass!

As stupid as he was for letting it go. The arrogant SJK put his money where his mouth was.
After a disease like coricarcinoma YOU TYPICALLY DON'T go SJK-ing around with steroids unless you are really crazy. Great way to improve the possibility of getting a possible recurrence.

Of course if he lost both bad-boys then he would have to start getting hormonal therapy ... but he would be starting from scratch with nothing natural produced at the source. Do you think that is cheating? Do you really? Does he really fit in the same category as Barry Bonds and company?

It's a little strange how they decide which drugs are banned. I remember an Aussie guy breaking his leg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX2yxGK5ZZw) (SJK) and afterwards he was saying, that he couldn't use the same medication a normal person would use for recovering, because they're on the banned substance list. So in effect his recovery took longer because he's a professional sports person.

Another story I read was in the ESPN Magazine, can't remember his name, but he was an American in the Tour de France, and he was stung in the face by a bee, and his face got all swollen and he couldn't see out of one eye properly. The medication he needed was on a (semi?) banned list, and was allowed by riders on the tour, if they were having knee problems. He said he could've lied, and faked a knee injury to take the medication, but he took the honesty option, and had to pull out of the tour.

I'm a huge fan of Senator Obama's, but you're right...that comment demonstrated how much he has to learn and how far he has to go.

Senator Clinton is ready right now to be president. I know that's her positioning and message, but it's also true. She's bland and dull and spouts fairly uninspiring and rote rhetoric constantly. But she's disciplined and unwavering. There is nothing that hasn't been thrown at that woman, and there is nothing she hasn't seen.

I hope Senator Hagel runs for the Republicans. Clinton vs. Hagel would be a fascinating campaign. Right now, the Republican field looks pretty representative of the Democrats' field the past 2 elections.

(oh, and I'm an Independent :-) )

So how does schooling work over there? You have one big break through your summer (June-July?) and that's it?

Over here, they start school at the end of January, there year consists of 4 terms, each lasting about 10 weeks, and they have 2 weeks holiday in between, with an extra 2 weeks over the Xmas, New Years break (our summer).

Atlanta has signed Jamaal Anderson, the #8 pick in the draft. His contract amount will be a guide for what Landry gets.

From ProFootballTalk.com:

FALCONS SIGN ANDERSON

"After eight straight days of bad news, the Atlanta Falcons finally have something positive to discuss.

A league source tells us that defensive end Jamaal Anderson, the No. 8 overall choice in the 2007 draft, has agreed to terms with the Falcons.

Per the source, Anderson inked a five-year deal with $15.36 million in guaranteed money, which represents a 13.4 percent increase over the No. 8 selection in 2006. The total possible value of the deal is $31 million, with easily attainable escalators in years four and five based on playing time and sacks.

Anderson is the highest first-round rookie to date to agree to terms. The fact that he signed a five-year deal means that he'll get to free agency faster, since the maximum duration of contracts for the players selected in the first half of round one is six years."

Posted by: The Crickets | July 26, 2007 4:58 AM | Report abuse

For comparison purposes, the #6 pick in the 2006 Draft (Vernon Davis, 49ers) received a five-year contract for approximately $24 million, with around $13 million guaranteed.

Landry's contract is going to be very expensive.

Not sure if you were aware of this, but when Mike bought the property, there was NOTHING on it. No house. No dog-fighting buildings. Nothing. But I'm sure when you have 6 buildings BUILT, and painted black, and have dog carcasses all over your property, that is all circumstantial.

Shouldn't we look at Taylor's contract at the same time Landry is up for $$s? We might end up with a repeat scenario to the Arch Deluxe situation last year, where Taylor is peeved all year about perceived (maybe actual) injustice.

Of course, the real problem is that Sean Taylor has not really shown himself to be a Gibbs type of player. His ongoing immaturity must chafe Gibbs, and not really motivate Gibbs to lock him up with dollars. I would not be surprised if Taylor never gets a new contract.

Posted by: Safety and Security | July 26, 2007 9:44 AM | Report abuse

Anyone think the fact that Campbell is dating Mrs. D.C. is just so classic Americana, Hollywood story ect... ? It almost makes me sick.

I expect Landry to get about the same deal Sean Taylor got for his rookie contract, As they were picked 5 and 6 respectivly. You cant compair different position players as good as you can Sean and LaRon.

Posted by: 35332 | July 26, 2007 9:48 AM | Report abuse

I really don't think there's any need to sign Taylor now. He's still got two years left on his orignal contract. See how well he plays this year, then sign him next year if we still want to. If he continues to regress or simply plateu, don't extend him. We'll still have Landry.

Posted by: VTMatt | July 26, 2007 9:49 AM | Report abuse

Crickets -

Liked the article on Buzbee. I don't feel like he'll end up on the team, but the faint hope of a DE that can get to the QB on 3rd down is exciting. Between Marcus Washington, Andre Carter and possibly Buzbee, will that be enough to provide some pressure?

Posted by: VTMatt | July 26, 2007 9:56 AM | Report abuse

Lisa;

Dont pay attention to vaherder. He is in NY and thinks no other journalist's as worthy as a NY journalist.

I and someone else called him out the last time he stirred the pot and he had nothing. His insult to me was saying that I should get out more and stop playing pocket pool. Pocket pool? I first used that term in fifth grade and the last time was eighth grade.

I would ITA, but it helps towards the push, so I just break him up and he never replies. Then he comes back later once his ego has healed and starts up again.

As Happy and not so happy stated, JLa gives it straight. He is not even from the DC area, he is from Baltimore. So the kool-aid talk he spouts is udder nonsense.

Posted by: Zebra | July 26, 2007 9:57 AM | Report abuse

As for the dog fighting, I think it would be somewhat simple to do a follow the money and see where it leads. IE: Vick's account show a withdrawal of XXX dollars this day the same day as this dog fight equipment was obtained, something along those lines. If he was the financier then follow the money.

If they found a bunch of dead dog's the forensics should reveal allot of info, you never know when or where they will find something.

"Between Marcus Washington, Andre Carter and possibly Buzbee, will that be enough to provide some pressure?"

With the stuff I've heard (read?) about Marcus learning the positional skills at DE, it wouldn't surprise me if the other strong side LBs (Khary Campbell, Sartz, probably Marshall) also were training to be hybrid pass rushers so they can show 3-4 then motion to 4-3. Plus Evans somehow gets lost in the discussions about pass rushing DEs.

I will be stunned if vick doesn't go down hard on this.... the feds only bring cases they win ...its like high 90's % wise they have enough evidence etc. remember its conspiracey ... so if pfunk or whoever killed a dog, fought a dog, paid a guy for a lost bet ....they all go down. my guess is they get a deal, some jail time and michael never is heard from again.

Not to open old wounds about the suckiness of the turnover stats, they are at least useful for the purposes of considering RELATIVE numbers. Sack numbers:

1. Andre Carter - 6
2. Philip Daniels - 3
3. Marcus Washington - 2.5
4. Demetric Evans - 2
5. Lemar Marshall - 1.5

The reason I mentioned Doughty is b/c he is the other safety actually DRAFTED by the Skins (and during Grilliams' tenure). I figure the only safeties with secure roster spots for THIS season are Sean Taylor and Landry. Between Doughty, Fox, Prioleau, and Stoutmire, seems like there is only roster space for three, esp. they keep another "leg" on the team (in addition to Frost and Suisham). By keeping only two legs, seems like more roster flexibility. Because the situation at CB seems less settled, seems like the safety position has less room on the roster.

My image of St. Joe killing time and not focusing on the team would be him on the sidelines with a laptop blogging here. On cooling tubs, my impression of Jasno is that he seems like he would be a volunteer, esp. on a hot day (kind of like diving into a mosh pit) ... and per sfskin's fears, probably would have the speedo on under the plaid.

Greg,

Do you not read here regularly, or are you joking?

I've made it pretty clear I think Vick will be convicted of conspiracy. I've made a number of arguments that the best thing for Vick, the Falcons and this football-loving, dog-loving nation would be an apology from Vick, some jail time, a year's suspension, and a crackdown on dog-fighting.

But I haven't made up facts. Arguments like yours undermine similar, more rational points of view.

If you were the GM for the Falcons (I think the real one's name is McKay), who would you target to be your guy to replace Joey Harrington by the first few weeks?

I'd want a short timer with experience. Though he has vowed to retire as a Packer, I'd make the move for former Falcon Favre. Per Kirwan at nfl.com, if Vick is cut before the 53 man roster cut, the dirty birds have $11M in cap space. [I respond to my own question w/o any knowledge of Favre's current salary.]

Mug, what facts did I make up?

Was it where I said that I thought the reason Vick hosted the fights was entertainment? Did you miscontrue that as me stating that to be a fact?

jm220, seems like the range here might be doable (and still leave some $ for Cooley). The Falcons announced they signed Jamaal Anderson this AM, so I agree with you. Plus, DEs are theoretically supposed to be on a better pay scale than safeties.

Link to the fake baby food thing in China several years ago. And we still import, what, just about everything from them? Ridiculous.

Greg: "Ron Mexico was hosting dog fights and buying pit bulls"

Proof?

Posted by: mugamack | July 26, 2007 1:50 PM | Report abuse

sfskin, I would definitely go to the Skins open practice....if it were not in flippin' Ashburn!

Posted by: Lisa | July 26, 2007 1:50 PM | Report abuse

my biggest worries:

1. JC- can the guy win us games (the only measure that matters when it comes to being a QB. rember how everyone and their mothers thought that Jake the Snake was a good QB on a bad team? it seems like there's no such thing. )

2. F the players. i'm worried about chemistry between the coaches (weird al-gibbs-buge)

J. Health of players especially Griff and Moss.

Lsquared should be looking at about $17 mil guaranteed then. Not a bad day at the office!

No, you can't. Well, let's wait until training camp starts.....

So, per above (China) we are their female dog (SJK!) and are big hypocrites?

the shamless self promotion of some people/person on here is pathetic

mug, try reading the whole thing, not just parts of it:

"Because I'm pretty sure thats why Ron Mexico was hosting dog fights and buying pit bulls. The entertainment"

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | July 26, 2007 1:56 PM | Report abuse

sween, i really think patrick ramsey is a better QB than harrington. mckay should go after ramsey (until next year). and kudos to Mckay for trading Schaub. my guess is Mckay sold the hype. schaub is okay but isn't good enough to make up for other people's mistakes.

mckay is A GM. look what he did to the skins with duckett! and what he did with tampa. you don't think tampa's wishing they could get him back?

Hey, what's wrong with Ashburn Lisa!?!

Posted by: Redcoat | July 26, 2007 1:57 PM | Report abuse

as far as hiring "playoffs?" son as a headcoach. at least he didn't give him 7 years...3 and out. good enough for me.

dealer,
Re: 1) This will obviously be the top story at least to mid-season. In terms of Ws and Ls, what's the benchmark for an average starting QB? Obviously, a lot depends on the team.

2) (what a creepy sequence you got going) I totally agree. Coach chemistry will be reflected in player chemistry. Is everyone on the same sheet of music.

j. too much chance here to worry about it. I'll save the worry for the pre-season games (are they really still playing 4?)

Kate Beckinsale's b'day today. 34.

Posted by: 4-12 | July 26, 2007 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Ya gotta go to open practice. If at all possible.

It's hot and miserable, there is no shade, the traffic is awful, it's way to hell and gone outside DC, it's ridiculously crowded, they mostly run a bunch of boring drills, everything is expensive as hell... and it's AMAZING.

Hello, these are the Redskins. That guy standing over there, that's JOE freakin' GIBBS. Oh look, it's #17 throwing to #89. Good grief, it's wonderful. Seriously, ya gotta go.

nate, there's shade. but players usually like to relieve themselves in the shade. so a good opportunity to get up close and personal.

I fondly recall a 5-story billboard of J Harrington out here in Portland, just before he was drafted. He looked really good in the Green and Gold and out on the college gridiron.

But Harrington or Ramsey as your starter in the NFL, oh my.

"Jake the Snake was a good QB on a bad team? it seems like there's no such thing."

Head got too big. Wasn't really well schooled in pro QB fundamentals. Didn't have good coaching was taught to "wing-it" too much for bad teams. Good example from back in the day: Fran Tarkington. With Minnesota scramble back and forth, throw weird passes lose lots of games. With the Gints he finally learned to be a QB. Same deal with the snake I think. He needs to be humble and let a good QB coach work with him. SAME DEAL with Patrick Ramsey. Jay Schroder, the very best coaching with the Redskins. Jay Schroeder terrible coaching with the Raiders. Look at the difference. Some teams need to get guys who already know how to QB from previous teams. The Raiders are definitely one of those teams. JaMarcus won't last long there without good coaching ... that's my prediction.
