Afternoon Update

Practice lasted just over an hour and it was flippin hot out there. All in all, though, several veterans have said privately that while the pace of camp is higher than in some years past here, it hasn't been anything remotely Marty-like and that overall the feel of things has been a little off.

You don't hear a lot of chatter. You don't hear the pads cracking. It certainly hasn't been ubber-physical and a few players said they had discussed as much with their teammates. We'll see if that picks up. I really thought Wednesday night was going to be that ferocious practice I've been waiting for, but a lot of people who have watched this entire week of practice now have come away saying the same thing - this ain't no party, this ain't no disco .. but it also ain't Camp Crunch either.

As for injuries, WR Brandon LLoyd sat out most of practice with shin splints. He's day to day. Jason Fabini didn't do much either and he has a groin problem that is also minor, Bubba said.

As far as evaluating players and the like, I'll do more of that after the scrimmage when we've had time to really start to formulate an opinion on this stuff.

JLC,

So does were these players happier about this softer camp? What does the player mean when he says things are off?

Posted by: RANDO | August 2, 2007 6:15 PM | Report abuse

So, the practices should escalate in intensity to avoid serious injury, but we've ended up with several already.

Intensity may have to wait until after the scrimmage, I guess.

The tone of camp is worrisome.

Seems to me that much of last years season was blamed on a bad camp and offseason training. Im not drinking the Kool Aid that last year was a disaster because training camp wasnt tough enough. Brunell stunk and Sanders offense never clicked. The defense never jelled and Arch/Rogers were disasters. A physically tougher camp wouldnt solve any of that. Not would it have made Griff healthier etc. Nope ... not gonna think that a tougher camp makes a better team. Because it doesnt.

Bless their little Donkey-loving hearts.

At least we always had a shot that Living Embodiment of Franchise Greatness Gibbs would come back and be our coach again -- and he did, and I love it and hope he sticks around -- but they have zero chance that LEFG Elway will come back and be their QB again. Haw haw! Hee haw!

Or something.

Hey 4th, I think Bill Simmons has found that middle ground on Michael Vick that you and I were looking for 2 weeks ago:

"It's been strangely entertaining to see so many people express shock and outrage that he could have done something so horrible. Um, he has the same DNA as Marcus Vick! That's like being shocked in 2012 when Lindsay Lohan's little sister gets her first DUI. Plus, Vick could have been accused of murdering a stripper, blowing up a shopping mall or funneling his Nike money to Al Qaeda, and people wouldn't have been even 1% as outraged as they are about the dogfighting allegations. You can get away with just about anything these days; just don't tick off dog lovers.

(And by the way, I'm one of them. I wish we could pay Roy Williams to horse-collar Vick from behind 200 times in a row. How could anyone cause pain to a dog? How could anyone want to be affiliated with a "sport" where dogs are electrocuted and you have to buy items with names like "rape stands"? Hopefully, this leads to a real-life Longest Yard sequel where Vick gets jailed and eventually leads a team of convicts against the guards, who summarily kick the living crap out of him for four quarters and turn his ACLs into fusilli. The end.)"

Since it's a little slow up here, I thought of a game for us to play: predict which '07 offseason move we'll rue the most after this season.

It can be an action (addition, retention, subtraction) or an inaction.

One year ago, who woulda predicted that by late in the season we'd all be howling about new guys Archuleta and B.Lloyd? That's what I'm talking about here. What's going to have us vilifying Vinny in January?

Posted by: mile high | August 2, 2007 6:40 PM | Report abuse

Okay Nate...

Last night I watched a clip of Simeon Rice blowing up both Chris Cooley and Chris Samuels on his way to sacking Brunell and forcing him to fumble.

I think we'll regret not even bringing the man into camp.

Does anyone out there know how the Tank Johnson suspension works?

Lets say a team signs him 4 games into the season. The man must serve an 8 game suspension. Does this mean Tank returns in game 9, or game 13?

believe or not I'm actually toying w/ the idea of taking my two kids to see a Broncos training camp practice. Folks out here are already talking about how Pittsburgh and Chicago went to the SB with essentially rookie QBs and strong D's.

Glad we haven't started talking bout that stuff yet, not sure the media in DC would even entertain the comparison much less propagate it like they are doing up here. Must be the thin air . . .

offense, despite it's problems was actually better than the previous year, just had fewer opportunities b/c they spent so muh time watching the opposing offense do its thing on our stinky D . . .

can't wait to see dub L and the reap dishing it out this year. . .

plus no more holdman (at least in DC, the donkey fans are in for an interesting year though) . . .

Don't think the D will stink again, after being that bad you can only get better . . .

8k, great to see you back! It's been a while.

I would probably go to another team's training camp if it were nearby. A few threads back I tried to explain why I enjoyed Skins camp so much... it's just so amazing to be hanging around, watching real NFL dudes, all the excitement and anticipation of the season, the interaction between coaches and players, all that stuff.

When my son was about six weeks old I took him to Skins training camp, Gibbs' first camp back. (Indoctrination? Naaah.) Not that he'll remember, but that was awesome.

Posted by: Lisa | August 2, 2007 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Training camp ain't what it used to be. This game has changed so we have to baby the players and coaches. No bonding needed just a big paycheck in your pocket.

Bring back Carlisle! Or a cooler northern location, like Alaska. Northern Michigan. Maine. Snyder still doesn't know how to allocate funds when needed.

I think this offense will start clicking on all cylinders this year. As long as, Jason can throw the deep ball to present a threat. Last year, Mark only threw short passes and mostly in the flats. We have to stretch the field. Plus, I think Cp on short flat routes will be dynamite after making the catch. One weakness Ladell had, he's just not mobile enough to shake and bake in the open field. (I still like Ladell, though)

Privately players are saying camp is a little off? Hmmm. Personally, I agree with whoever said they should go back to Carlisle or Frostburg or wherever else to get away from the media and The Owner and everything else that surrounds the camp in a glass box. They should be able to get injured in peace and in private. Same thing with scuffles among players. They need to get out of the spot light. I base this on absolutely nothing, just my gut.

What is Ms. Mackin's first name? The face looks familiar but I can't remember the network.

Because prostitutes don't hit you with paternity suits. Many athletes go the professional route because it is less of a hassle. Most use call girls because doing it on the street in a town where people will likely recognize you (and where there is police presence) is just plain stupid.

Any word on whether the Skins Ravens scrimmage is televised?

Other notable issues, any chance the Skins are interested in Corey Simon formerly of the Colts?

Strahan, Rice, Walker, Shoebel, the SKins had chances to get some help. If they go into the Season with no rush upgrade, the deserve whatever they get...

PS ESPN is speculating that 2007 is Gibbs last year in DC...

"PS ESPN is speculating that 2007 is Gibbs last year in DC..."

Danny was spending time with Theisman in his golfcart. I suspect Gibbs is fairly tired of Danny. And Gibbs is fairly tired of dealing with him on a daily to hourly basis. If they win big this year it will make Snyder look awfully bad if Gibbs leaves. Makes one wonder about picking up line help especially at end.

Corey Simon would be the best bet to try. Strahan would be another Bruce Smith.

I suspect we will be seeing lots of the old
"53" defense with Washington at one end. Plus blitzing by Taylor and Landry. They have plenty of tackles. And a decent pass rushing end.

In the end its up to the linebacking corps and safeties when it comes to the run. Pass defense its up to the corners and supposedly they've improved.

Saunders vows to improve the offense. Williams has some new tricks up his sleeve. We'll have to see ...
