Albert Haynesworth expected to be inactive tonight

Defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth is expected to be inactive Sunday night when the Redskins play host to the Indianapolis Colts at FedEx Field, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Team sources confirmed a report Sunday morning by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer that indicated Washington's coaching staff is "strongly leaning" toward listing Haynesworth, who missed the Week 5 victory against Green Bay following the death of his younger brother, as inactive for the big-stage game against the Colts. Although Coach Mike Shanahan could change his mind before game officials must receive the inactive lists about 90 minutes before kickoff, the expectation is that Haynesworth will miss his second consecutive game.

Haynesworth is not being punished for disciplinary reasons, the sources said. But he missed the final two days of preparation before the 16-13 victory in overtime against Green Bay to travel to Nashville, Tenn., to tend to family matters following the death of his brother, Lance McCoy, 23, in a motorcycle accident. Players were off Monday and Tuesday, but Haynesworth missed practice Wednesday after traveling to his hometown of Hartsville, S.C., to make final arrangements for his brother.

The nine-year veteran rejoined the team in time for practice Thursday. Haynesworth also practiced Friday, participated in the walk-through Saturday and reported to the team hotel Saturday night, the sources said. Shanahan has said that players will not play if they do not practice, and Haynesworth did miss the first day of preparation for Sunday night's game.

But given the circumstances of Haynesworth's team-approved absence, it seems odd that Haynesworth would be held out of another game. Moreover, Haynesworth had his best performance of the season in the Week 4 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a disruptive force early in the 17-12 win at Lincoln Financial Field, and the Redskins, presumably, could use the two-time all-pro against the Colts' productive passing attack, led by Future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

Just play him!!!!!

I hope this is just a smokescreen by ShanaMan. AH is needed on the field tonight. Makes no sense to make him inactive just for missing one day of practice, and there's no way he's that out of shape. Players miss one day of practice all the time and play, due to injury.

AH is not injured, there are no disciplinary issues, so what's the problem?

G O O D M O R N I N G RI peeps and sheeps.

Get ready for a healthy dose of the pabrian brothers this week as the Optimism Bus rolls into town.

Following todays loss to the Colts

Us pabrian brothers will be here all week explaining(with impeccable football knowledge may i add) the mistakes of trading away future Superbowl MVP Jason Campbell and trading for McSoup, a washed up never-was. Joining us with a special guest appearance will be ALAN4.(who offers keen insight how if you gave Jason Campbell the perfect team he could win...as if no other QB could do, mind you)

In addition the continuous nitpicking of Mike Shanahans approach will continue with yet another guest appearance from WALTHU19.(folks you must pay attention though because WALTHU19 only shows up toward the end of the thread when everybody has left. Stay tuned to read his ever non-racist posts about Mike ShanaKLAN)

It's gonna be a doozy!

I am not a big fan of Haynesworth but in this case he did have a excuse absence. He did practice Thursday and Friday. Just play him.

Posted by: TheJury | October 17, 2010 12:24 PM | Report abuse

As WALTHU19 would say..Mike ShanaKLAN is a moron starting that slow/unathletic white weakling lictensteiger and not starting Haynesworth..and i agree.

This is just insane! Shanahan needs to either play this man or let him go. There is no in between! I'm tired of this drama. Shanahan is really not earning any points for the way he has handled his personnel!

If Haynesworth is made inactive it will hurt us on the field! Shanahan....WAKE UP!!!

I'd like to drink 12 beers and take Palin out for a steak dinner and then never call her again.

RE Haynesworth: He practiced Thurs and Fri and if they are waiting for him to get in shape to play then they might as well make him inactive for the rest of the season. PLAY him 25-35 snaps and it will be hard for Peyton to run a hurry up if he's lying on his back.

Could it be that Shanahan is just giving him the game off so that he can get stronger mentally since he lost his brother?

I don't know if the Colts are dumb enough to fall for this but hopefully the "Haynesworth won't play" ruse will catch them a little off guard when 92 suddenly appears on the field.

Makes sense. After all, Shanahan has talked to Albert and he's seen him in practice.

It's also possible that the whole thing is just noise to keep Indy off balance.

One thing I rely on -- Shanahan will pick the players who give him the strongest game day roster against Indy and if Haynesworth isn't one of them he'll get the game off.

Posted by: beep-beep | October 17, 2010 12:39 PM | Report abuse

seriously...hopefully this is a ruse.

if what's written in that article above is the "whole story", then it is preposterous to "sit" albert.

Brett Farve lost his Dad and played immediately.

After a death you want to get mentally tougher? Get back to work to occupie your mind and not allow yourself time to dwell on the loss.

AH needs to get on the field to continue the momentum he showed against the Eagles.

I like where the team is at now under ShanaMan and Co. but some of his personnel decisions are questionable. If this stands, I don't like it. Don't see the logis in it. This is a big game where what AH can do is sorely needed. What's the use of having him, especially with his salary if he's not being played?

I hope this is just to keep the Colts guessing.

Inactive lists are posted about an hour and a half prior to kickoff. The Colts will be ready for him. If he doesn't play, my guess is the coaching staff determined AH is still emotionally drained from losing his brother.

"Let him play" is irresponsible coaching if he is not thinking right. Imagine you need heart surgery and your doctor's brother died a week and a half ago. Would you blindly say, "Let him operate!" No, you would make sure his head was in the game before letting him operate on you.

(Yes, I tend to think of Redskins games as life-or-death situations).

That Brett Favre played immediately after his father died is irrelevant. While some people cheered his toughness, others questioned whether he should be playing a game at a time he should be with his family. And no, not all that anyone needs to do to get mentally tougher is to go back to work. Each person grieves differently, and each person has a different mental adaptability. It's not for Albert Haynesworth to tell you how to get together after a death or you to tell him. You can suggest, but you can't tell him.

Yes, he's highly paid and would add to the presence of the team, but it's not for me, or you, to say what he should do at this time. Regarding Coach Shanahan, however, I do think it would be wrong for Coach Shanahan to hold him out because of practice issues; this was not an issue of being injured physically and unable to practice, but, to me, an understandable absence even if the general guideline is "no practice, no play."

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | October 17, 2010 1:07 PM | Report abuse

This is a none issue. Shanny probably asked him if he wants to play or not. Hayney probably said he's not sure yet, hence "game time decision." Don't blow this up to be more than it is folks since we don't have any of the facts. And by any I mean any. We don't know a single thing except that no one has made a decisin on anything yet.

I gotta say, without getting too crude about it, that your comment wasn't very bright. We've beaten some decent teams to this point and been in every game. This coaching staff is making much better decisions than the previous one and yet you still complain. I guess you just can't please everyone. Different people deal with a loss of a family member in different ways. Obviously if AH told the coaches his mind may not be in the game due to his brother's loss, then by all means he should be inactive.

If he hasn't communicated this, he should be allowed to play tonight.

Yeah it's all Shanahan's fault. Shanahan held a gun to Fat Al's head and said "Don't you DARE show up to off season practices, manditory or "voluntary." Be sure to "workout" on your ow, pausing only to race your boat and whine about how you have to play a position you don't wanna play.

Don't forget to take your $21 million check and cash it, making the Redskins think you really want to stay and play.

Show up to camp out of shape, fail your conditioning tests--you KNOW the fans at RI will give you a pass on that.

Oh, and be sure to stink up the feld during that last preseason game.

Sacks? Don't need 'em.

Stay out of shape and miss a game or two. And work on perfecting that 'in for two plays, on the sideline panting for two plays" technique you have,

Yeah, it's all Shanahan's fault. Totally. Hey, I'll bet he even forced Snyder and Vinny to sign Al to one of the stupidest contracts in football history.

Because we all know if only they let you play, the Redskins will win 'em all.

I'm hoping that AH is active and is a part of the DL rotation. Say 25-35 plays.

If not, oh well. It's not like we're making Reggie White inactive.

Our DL consists of 7 guys that are overachievers and 1 underachiever. The problem is that the underachiever is the highest paid player ever for DL and I'd take overachievers in place of an underachieving malcontent everyday and twice on Sunday.

Pittsburgh is the best team in the league.

I can't wait to see the Cowgirls fall to 1-4!

If true, the HC is still "Shanatizing" players (inactive via my EGO) I think Revis for the Jets missed all training camp and a couple of games and he played the first game back. If true, Shanahan is still not putting the best interest of the team first. It's all about the EGO.

Ha! Revis reported out of shape and got injured the first game. He's missed time and when he plays he's not a factor. That's what you want? Thanks, but I'll go with Shanahan's approach any day.

I think this ego trip thing is really fans thinking they know more than a head football coach and having their ego bruised that Shanny isn't asking their opinion.

Sitting Haynesworth is preposterous!

Why would it be for disciplinary reasons when it was an excused absence?

One key to victory is collapsing the pocket to prevent Peyton from stepping up. Who cares if Albert missed Wednesdays practice? They are still hoping Rocky Mac can play and he was out all week with a concussion, so that can't be the problem.

If this is about Shanny still trying to make his point, enough already! The games count and Haynesworth in there makes a big difference. Otherwise, all you teaching the rest of the players is that once you get in the dog house with Shanny, the only way out is by leaving the team, and that's not very productive.

This is another good opportunity for Albert to earn his way out with a big. That's an approach that benefits everyone and sends a better message.

If this is pointed at me, I am not defending Haynesworth, I'm questioning the coaches tactics for turning this around. If you want to dance on his head in the off season, fine. But the games count now.

I think it would be more productive to create common goals that would benefit all parties concerned like: "ALBERT, I need 5 tackles, 3 QB hits and 1 sack against Indy. Take the Center and drive him 4 yards deep every play. We're all behind you, so go take care of family business and be ready to come back and kick some Indy A$S"

Make him earn his way back into good graces instead of treating him like you hate him and think he's trash. That way, you have something to build with next year.

Just a thought.
