Coin Toss: What to do about Albert

They have to get rid of him at some point before training camp to avoid a repeat of last years distractions. Might as well hold out to see if someone offers anything for him. Ham sandwich?

Pretty amusing how he listed 9 team needs. Probably should have included center to make an even 10.

hessone, my point was that Coughlin in the wake of that runback was screaming at the punter as though he were the only one to blame for the TD return. I don't agree with Coughlin on that. But it's another example of how some people choose to selectively assess credit and blame in a team sport...

Posted by: NateinthePDX | February 17, 2011 12:31 PM |

Talk about being selective. The media has manufactured this idea that Father Coughlin is a Hard Rider and even though 90 million other coaches would have done what Coughlin did to the punter, you can be sure that only for Coughlin would Fox have shown over and over the clip of him barking at the dude.

Top rush linebackers

1. Von Miller: Texas A&M (6-3, 237)
Lacks great size, but is simply the most natural pass rusher in this year’s draft.

2. Robert Quinn: UNC (6-5, 268)
Is a better fit as a 4-3 DE in my view, but looks fluid enough in space to make the move as a 34-rush guy if need be.

3. Akeem Ayers: UCLA (6-4, 255)
His size makes him a perfect fit for the position and he does have some experience rushing the passer.

4. Justin Houston: Georgia (6-3, 258)
He’s more explosive off the edge coiled up in a three-point stance, but with the needs for 34 rush backers, Houston should definitely get a long look in round one.

5. Aldon Smith: Missouri (6-4, 258)
Much like Quinn, he seems like a better fit with his hand on the ground, but has the natural athleticism to get a long look standing up as well.

6. Martez Wilson: Illinois (6-4, 250)
Was at his best this season when Illinois allowed him to create havoc off the edge and rush the passer.

7. Dontay Moch: Nevada (6-2, 229)Possesses an explosive first step, good fluidity when asked to change directions and is the type of guy who you just let pin his ears back and go.

Brandon Shanks? His cut-backs are razor sharp and his speed enables him to knife through the coverage and find the edge.

With Haynesworth's off the field shenanigans, I don't think he's tradeable. Yes, if the Redskins release him someone will take a shot at him but I think I have to side with Arrington on this one. The guy is a distraction and a drain on his teammates. Time to let him go.

Albert is like a call girl who came to your house, did not perform adequately or do as you asked, leaving you dissatisfied. You asked that she leave and she stole all your money on the way out.

Would you ask her back? Why not, she's already got all your money so it's time to earn it. In not sell her to another guy.

I am starting to trend toward that notion as well BUT, even a 5th round draft pick is something. I disagree with DoveBar Eclairrington (have another box,56)that Shamesworth's mere presence undermines Shanny's authority. Hayney is making an ass of himself and is well on his way to ending up broke, in jail or both. He isn't a player occupying a roster sport at this point to the 'Skins....he's a body, a commodity that the team will eventually ship out of here for a used kicking tee if they have to. The only good thing the 'Skins can hang their hat on is that Haney cannot do anything or go anywhere....until the 'Skins say so.

Let everyone know you want a third rounder for him and keep him on the roster. He has a very friendly contract and is an impact maker in a 4-3. Someone will bite. The Saints, Vikings, or Lions might come for him. If not then keep him just to spite him.

At first I thought like you do that it is the offseason and none of the players even see Haynesworth since I doubt he is working out at the Redskins training facility. Then, I remembered a couple of the players saying how tired they were of answering questions about Haynesworth. As long as Haynesworth is the poster child of adult misbehavior the players will be answering questions about him. I think that would drive me nuts after awhile. There's not a team in the league that would take him right now for all of his baggage, so he has not trade value. Cut him. Make him yesterday's news.

Haynesworth's presence doesn't undermine Shanny's authority or message.

The players aren;t stupid (well most of them at least) and they know the Haney deal - the present regime is stuck with this albatross thanks to the previous nincompoops and his contract makes it difficult to get a satisfactory resolution.

Haynesworth hasn't been allowed to get away with anything, starting with training camp conditioning tests.

The time to get rid of him and "send a message" would have been this past season's trade deadline, when he still had some value.

Now that it has passed, there's no point in cutting him loose now if there isn't a tangible benefit to be gained by doing so for the team.

Posted by: p1funk | February 17, 2011 1:08 PM | Report abuse

Who would offer a pick for Fat Al now? There's no confidence in him. There's no CA in place. And we're going to have to cut him before the season is back on.

.. any GM that gave up anything for him would be lambasted by everyone around.

Posted by: RedSkinHead | February 17, 2011 1:07 PM |

I hear you but when has the FO made moves based on what the existing roster likes and doesn't like?

There is going to be a team, in a situation much like we were in a couple years ago when we lost 2 DE's in the first week of camp and HAD to overpay to bring in Jason "Dancing with the Guards" Taylor. Someone is going to have a guy go down and that could get Haynes-Girth to go from no value, to a 4th/5th rounder to a 3rd given the team-friendly contract you accurately mentioned.

One can hope....and the team really has nothing to lose by keeping him hostage for a few more months.

Posted by: Personal_Fowl | February 17, 2011 1:12 PM | Report abuse

Put him on the practice squad.

If memory serves, the Redskins are only obligated to pay him something like $4.5 or 5.4 million this year... if that, given that he broke the contract last year for failing to show for the mandatory training sessions -- and thus may only be entitled to league minimums or something.

So we may as well use him for a tackling dummy or something.

But do not -- under any circumstances -- play, trade or release him, at least until we get a deal we like -- if ever.

Dude has already made a mockery of this team, this coaching staff, and this league for far too long -- do not let him do it again.

Posted by: Vic1 | February 17, 2011 1:16 PM | Report abuse

What kind of message does cutting him send? O yeah, that we'll give 20 million dollars and you don't even have to play for us. We'll cut you then let you go play for another team and make even more money. F that. Keep him under contract and let him rot on the inactive list for the next 3 years.

First off, what is 'opined'?

Second, there have been mixed reports over the years, some saying Shanahan is good to work for, some saying he's a ball-buster and dictator.

I have seen or heard anything while he's been here to point to his treating of Haynesworth as personal, so I think it is a business decision.

I'm sure Shanahan was ticked when Haney didn't want to come to camp, but I don't see all of this being a result of that.

Posted by: monk811 | February 17, 2011 1:21 PM | Report abuse

Haynesworth was given big money because he has proven he can be an extremely disruptive force on the field.

Unfortunately, he's also proven he can be even more disruptive off the field.

That might not matter as much if he was on a SB contender (like Big Ben), but for a team with as many other problems as the Skins have, there's just no room.

No doubt, Albert has managed to sink his value. But I'd still hope for a trade. The guy was DPOY and is still just 29 -- its not like he can't be a player again.

If I was a coach who thought I could manage him, I toss out a 6th rounder for him. But the most likely coaches are Schwartz in DET and Fisher in the unemployment line. I doubt Schwartz feels a need to put Albert next to Suh.

At the end of it, we probably do wind up cutting him.

"I definitely like the group the way it is, but if we were able to have the opportunity and it was my decision to allow Albert Haynesworth to join our team, I would love for him to be able to join our group," Suh told Pro Football Weekly. "He's been in this exact scheme, he's been with Coach Schwartz, been with Gunther Cunningham, been with Kyle Vanden Bosch. ... It would be a great addition."

Haynesworth was with those three on the Titans.

"He's the one guy that when I was in college I watched closely my last two years," Suh told PFW. "I tried to steal some things from his game and understand how he was beating players. Being able to have a guy like that at our own disposal, it would be great to be able to work with him and talk to him about football."

Keeping a disruptive player because of a crappy contract negotiated by the prior regime sends a message, too. It says a player can get away with anything as long as there are a few more zeros on their paycheck. It says a player can hold his team hostage with his contract. Keeping him would do nothing good for the team. Maybe keeping him under contract and under Shanahan's thumb might feel good, might people think Shanny is getting revenge for all of the Haynesworth nonsense, but in the end, it just hurts the team. Why deal with it?

Have you ever heard the term "energy vampire"? I've heard it in the context of leadership training. The basic idea is you have so many people that work for you that demand your attention. When you have to spend an inordinate amount of time on that one person, you are taking time away from the other, worthier people that work for you. Haynesworth is an energy vampire. Every time Shanahan goes to the podium and answers a dozen Haynesworth questions, it takes away the praise that a guy like Armstrong or K. Williams should be getting. What goes on at the podium is probably a small sampling of how Shanahan's time is devoted out of the spotlight. Every bit of his time devoted to dealing with that scum of the earth is time he could be spending on developing a worthier player. No thanks. Let him go.

Of course of course a horse is a horse.

Homophobia is a range of negative attitudes and feelings towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, and in some cases transgender and intersex people. Definitions refer variably to antipathy, contempt, prejudice, aversion, and irrational fear.

I'm sure a person of your eminent stature fears no one or no thing. It is also pretty obvious that you have antipathy, contempt, prejudice and aversion to most things that fit under the general rubric of "diversity". You want your country back, don't you!

I'd say yes and no.

The team is disciplined without him or with him.

And AH isn't worth 'earning' his way back into the team's good graces.

Cutting him loose will free him to be the human Godzilla he is without casting mud on the team's already besmirched image.

If you believe one player or one coach can motivate a team, then you have to give credit to the fact that one guy can de-motivate a team. When the coach is spending too much time placating one player it is bad for a team. I think any team that ever cut T.O. knows that is right. Look at the zoo Cincy has become since they brought in T.O. to pal around with Ocho. Do you think that's a distraction?

LaVar Arrington continuing to get anyone's attention undermines my sanity.

Right now, there is no reason to do anything with Albert Haynesworth. He remains under contract. A LOT has to happen before any decisions get made about his future, including but not limited to the inking of a new CBA.

Diesel44, I keep forgetting about Akeem Ayers b/c he doesn't seeem to get ranked near #10 but is typically gone by #42. Also, the only stuff I've seen about Martez Wilson labels him an inside LB ... but whoever you're clipping from makes an interesting point. Finally, from the previous thread, I feel like I should be figuring out more about J.J. Watt. Another guy mentioned, Muhammed something, also sounded interesting if he's around when the Skins pick again after the 2nd round.

How many years are left on McNabb's contract? I disagree with peeps who say he in untradeable b/c of the costs of his contract. The costs seem performance-based (i.e., if he does well, then the team plays ... if not, then no). The trade value would seem affected by the duration, but I don't remember how long his deal lasts.

I agree. Let Haynesworth be Haynesworth. The more he screws up, the better the case for the Redskins to recover some of his signing bonus.

I don't think he's tradable anymore because of his contract. He used to look cheap (at around $3 million) for next year, but after this year and the ongoing drama I don't think any team in the league wants to tie up that much money for him. The only way he can make that money next year is playing for the Redskins under his existing contract.

Haynesworth will be a free agent at some point and there won't be many teams willing to pay him so he'll be taking a one-year deal for the league minimum plus some incentives. He might have a big year so that he can do well on a three-year contract the following year. Then again, his run in the NFL may be over.

Haynesworth is just not tradable right now and any team would be hesitant to sign him, much less trade for him. The man will be 30 years old by next season, and realistically only had 2 productive seasons out of 9. I'm not sure what anyone is really getting out of this guy if they don't run the one gap scheme he had as a Titan. Like I said when Haynesworth was signed, THE GUY IS A ONE TRICK PONY and would be INEFFECTIVE IN ANY OTHER SYSTEM PUT IN PLACE. Haynesworth since he's gotten here has done nothing but prove me RIGHT.He is not effective in any other system besides that one, but only the lions run it and they have Suh and no need for him. Just cut him and let someone else deal with it.

1. You posted a poorly worded statement about AH which I mocked, with good reason.

2. Furious and having no good argumentative comeback you stooped to Latino-bashing as the next best alternative because of my handle.

3. I again mocked you about being a hater (phobic) and you took the fear part of the word phobic's many possible meanings and beat your chest about being fearless.

4. I used the definition of the word homophobic to demonstrate that there are multiple variations on the meaning of phobic and fear is only one, not the one I intended in your case.

5. Along the way you threw in a lot of adhominem attacks having to do with losing, stupidity, owning, etc., but not at all related to an argument of any kind.

PS - "Nothing lights my fire more than an unsophisticated loser trying to engage someone galactically more so." Dude - you can't even get the words right. Taken at face value what that says is that you are "galactically" more unsophisticated and "galactically" more of a loser. Good job!

Potential options for dealing with AH:
1. Shoot him.
2. Trade his rights to a sumo wrestling league.
3. Send him to anger management.
4. Trade him for anything north of a mayonnaise sandwich.
5. Hope he gets convicted of sexual assault and go old regular assault, gets at least a year in jail (not likely) and we can release him and try to get some of the bonus money back.
6. Keep him on the team, and simply suspend him for the next 2 years when he refuses to play the 3-4 (don't know if the labor agreement would allow for this or not). Yea we pay him, but he can sit and rot while the next 2 years pass on by.

I would go with 4, 5 or 6. Most likely is that we will just end up releasing him.

A professional organization should operate on the basis of self-interest and not vengeance or pettiness...even though that would feel good in the short term. Which strategy is the best way to defend the organization's interests is up for debate. Best case scenario is the Skins' get the best offer out there and it also happens to be a solution that Haynesworth finds distasteful.

I'd be interested to hear when you came around on AH92. Which incident or moment moved you from a "staunch supporter" to someone who wants to stick it to him so badly?

Haynesworth has it pertty good. He cashed a huge check last year, and barely played.

Then he got an approved 4 game vacation at the end of the season.

He may be approaching 30 years old, but the only wear and tear he has to his body is from swinging at other motorists and grabbing waitresses happy bags.

There's simply no good reason to keep him on the team if he doesn't have a reasonable chance to get in the game. I really don't care how much of Snyder's money has already been sunk on him--only keep players on the team who will contribute to winning.

But yeah, Rocky on the outside, 'Lo and the inside, more sensible. But I'm thinking 'Lo might be best as a 3-4 DE, given the scheme we are 'trying' to run.

Sharks gave up Jody Shelley as their enforcer ... then had a kid by the name of Brad Staubitz for a short while, but he's in Minny, I think. This season, the closest thing to an enforcer for the Sharks is Ryane Clowe, but he's too good a player to have that role. So while we have some guys that can dish it out, they aren't the guys you want to see in the box for fighting.

Should be about even then, matt hendricks is our guy to step up but as said he dosent really have the physical presence you want out of your Tyson. Plus he stared scoring as of late and we put him in on a shootout(which we lost obv) so it may have gone to his head. Dont see any impressive fights coming tonight. But enjoy the game, its big one for us. Even bigger for yous, the bottom half of the West is a complete deadlock right now.

I'm not as big a beer snob as I may come off at times. But sometimes I will fork over for the good stuff, especially since I've cut back my consumption a good bit... quality over quantity, for the most part, these days.

That said, I'll admit I forked over nine or ten bucks for a six pack a few days ago, Boont ESB... and it was worth it.

Unlike wine, freshness counts a lot with beer. That's one reason why it tastes better at bars. I'm serious.

So don't buy dusty sixpacks.

I've enjoyed "Mission Street" IPA from trader Joes for $5.99 a sixer when I'm bargain hunting. Dunno if they have that back east,

okay, we are supposed to believe that "professional" level atheletes are distracted by a team mate that is not present at the facility and is unlikely to play for the Skins. Really? Are you saying that they lack the ability to focus then, but are capable of focusing on playing in game day situations? I fail to see how that could be the case, especially since they can easily just say "no comment" consistently and pointedly whenever asked any question regarding Haynesworth, anytime the press asks. I say keep him for two reasons. There may be a point where he can get you a couple of sacks during the season, if we can promise that he won't have to play NT (and how hard can that be really?) Additionally, it would be foolish to have spent so much money and gotten so little in return for it. Keep him in good faith, make a concession and see if he can provide a couple of sacks. If he can't play, or is in legal trouble, then it's no loss.
