Football in July?

Most players have scattered for a final few weeks of rest before training camp, and many of our reporters have followed suit. But that doesn't mean that Redskins Insider or the NFL News Feed goes into hibernation for the month of July.

We'll be tracking the soap-opera-in-shoulder pads that is the Albert Haynesworth saga and any other Redskins of NFL developments. Keep your eyes on our blogs.

Unfortunately, other than baseball (wake me in August), there are only a couple more weeks to sustain us with that other kind of futbol and that world thing.

Nice fluff piece about Russ Grimm's kid and his battle to make the Bucs roster:

To the editors of the Redskins Insider:

Instead of hashing, rehashing and re-rehashing the Haynesworth saga, how about some nice color pieces in the coming weeks? Here are a few of my suggestions:

-A whole series where the Redskins alumni are asked in depth questions about the current roster and what they think of them. Sonny on McNabb. Joe Jacoby on today's offensive line. Monk on the receivers. Green on the defensive backs. Mann on the defensive linemen. Harvey on the linebackers.

-A look back at some of Shanahan's previous offenses and how today's players would be used in them. I am thinking specifically about how Chris Cooley would look playing as Shannon Sharpe. How would MK look as a psuedo Brendan Jacobs (okay, that's just a joke). Clinton Portis as, say, Clinton Portis. Trent Williams as Ryan Clady.

-Whatever happened to the coaching staff for Gibbs' last Super Bowl run?

-Redskins spring combine: who's the strongest, the fastest, etc. on the team?

Three days without a post and then this "story" to let us know that Redskins Insider doesn't go "into hibernation." Seriously? If you need a post to let us know you're still there then that means you're not still there.

I read it. The kid is a special teams ace, but I doubt he can make it in the NFL as a full time safety. There was a reason that Tech had him playing linebacker. He may have speed, but that doesn't mean he has the quick reflexes to play the position. It's a shame he didn't have more of the bulk his father had. Must have had a small Mom, huh?

@RedSkinHead,

Well, that's one way to take it, but doesn't it seem like inside-the-box?

Wouldn't you rather they interview some death row inmates on whether they'd prefer to be drowned or shot? Some of Vick's family members to get his side of the story? Some PETA members about whether dogs or humans are more important? Maybe an in-depth study of the top 15 white rappers, along with a few polls on which we like better?

This blog is so much more than just football. Should be All-Things-Considered Insider.

Guys like this can make it in the NFL...London Fletcher is a great example of that. Seems to me if he plays as an in-the-box SS, he could stick if he works hard at it. Every indication is that he's a blue-collar guy who has a high motor and a high football IQ (no surprise, given his genes). Sounds a lot like another Reed Doughty to me...

Hey RedSkinHead,

I commend you on some good ideas for RI stories.
Hope they will take you up on some of them.

Regarding RedSkinHead, I would really like to see the Skins go to that uniform they used a few years back for the 70th anniversary....
that was awesome.

Personally, I don't want the old mustard pants, and I fear that is what Bruce Allen means when he refers to not being ashamed of our historic Redskin team colors.

How about you?

100% agree...those are far and away the best unis they have. I've always said that if the team is ever forced to change their name, they should change it to either Warriors or Warpath, and wear those throwbacks as the home uniform. LOVE those burgundy jerseys/gold pants...

Compliments to redskinhead. All excellent ideas. How about an OL coach assesment of how the unit looks so far?

Posted by: bostskin | June 28, 2010 8:52 AM | Report abuse

I wouldnt mind reading a good article on how the rookies did through OTAs. Or maybe an explanation of why it is assumed hicks will take big wills spot. Is Hicks that good on the inside or was Kyle bsing when he said this was one of the best lines he had worked with before they traded for UPS.

How about a follow up with JC.

I agree with ECSkins and Wonsapnatm; dont remind us your are still there, just WORK!

Those are my faves as well, although the ones we rocked in the 70's were nice too. Basically just like our current unis but with gold pants instead of burgundy or white.

How about some updates on guys returning from injury, Rhino, Horton, Carter, Daniels...etc..

So, we've got the retro-uniform and an assessment of the o-line by the OL coach as things to add to the list of articles we could instead of stories about having stories, which this article seems to be about.

Another article I would request would be a write up on how Mark Brunell lost all of his millions. Criminy. The guy makes all of that money and is now bankrupt? How does that happen? This could be a backdrop for a larger story on how former players have done financially and what the league could do to help these younger players not burn through all of their funds.

I always liked the idea of basically taking the 2002 throwback uniform and pairing it with the normal Indian head helmet (with the color of the helmet corrected to the jersey color) I designed this a few months back, and like the idea of having a gold away(white) jersey.

I just saw him more as a Larry Izzo type of player: he's all heart, but not exceptionally gifted physically. Doughty, on the other hand, had the advantage of at least playing safety in college. I am not saying that players are always cast in the right spot in college, but more often than not, there's a pretty compelling reason why.

I don't see that as a bad thing...Izzo had a decent career and made more than a few rosters. Great coaches get the most out of those scrappy type players. Not sure if Tampa is that place, but I could see him getting a shot with a team like Pittsburgh or New England and doing well.

Re2- I don't even play madden that much anymore, it's lost its luster on me since 2005.

I think JR is basically stating that he is taking off the rest of June even though there are still a couple days left.

Don't worry, my contempt for the RI won't go into hibernation either. It's so rare that anything of note ever comes about here. In fact, most of the real breaking news seems to come from the regular readers/contributors or this section.

I wish someone would give me a forum like this in the Washington Post. I would make this section into the 'go-to' resource for real-time updates relative to all things Washington Redskins and actually leverage this forum to obtain vital and relevant information - even in July (late June, really).

I bet if you showed up at an Eastern Motors this time of year one could run into Clinton Portis buying his latest luxury sled or maybe snap a couple digi-photos of Albert Haynes-Girth lying like a beached whale by the pool in his upscale Miami condo or his $4 million dollar yacht on the TN river. I bet even those of us that are as tired of Fat Albert as he is after a fist down play would be receptive to at least that.

RedSkinHead has it right. Go get us something, anything, anything at all that makes us want to keep checking back for answers or late developments - not always on the most relevant of topics but at least from relevant people.

..I'm outta here like a $20 million dollar check. Peas!

FedorEm, I'm assuming you're talking about Nowitzski playing for the Wizards and not the Redskins...playing for the Skins would be tragic. The Wiz could do a lot worse than Dirk but he's proven that he's not a guy who can carry you to a title. No chance he'll have the kinda squad here that he had in Dallas all those years so it's a decent move...it just won't bring my 2012 championship prediction to fruition.

If true, and the advice pertains to anything on-field, this is out of line. I can't imagine either coaching staff would like it either. If it's off-the-field advice like..."Don't pay any attention to the ocean of jackholes that is Beagle nation", that's no big deal.

I read "Football in July" and I'm excited to see a list of TV programs that will broadcast preseason scrimmages and give us fans some interesting insight into Redskins training camp.
But, alas, upon clicking the link I see that all I have to look forward to in July is more "As the Fat Turns" or "All My Money" or "Days of Our Holdout" etc.

What makes you so sure he's not? We've all seen him have an impact. Yeah, talk about the people he's playing against one-on-one. He should beat them and guess what - he did. He was also playing with gues on his side of the ball that are now making my cocktails at the bar or delivering my overnight mail. It's pretty clear the guy has talent, just watch his speed and athletic ability in relation to those he's playing against. The man HAS TALENT but that and a quarter will get you a bag of chips in the NFL. You have to have something between your ears and he seems to be lacking in that department.

Any additional cogent analysis?

1. He's gotten cut from the Redskins, and the Lions...how many more teams does he need to get cut from in order to confirm that he's perhaps not that talented??

2. He had an impact in preseason, against guys no longer in football. So really, he's had NO IMPACT whatsoever. He apparently didn't beat enough people on the lions roster in order to stick there....

I had a really weird dream last night that the Skins were playing the Cowboys and beat the Boys 41-30. Haynesworth was a beast with 2 sacks and the offense was tremendous. Only thing was Cooley was the starting QB, and Moss and Landry were absent from the game. And I was talking to Haslett after the game about his scheme, and he was like 4 foot tall.

I'll give you the Giants, but the Eagles aren't wearing anything special IMO.

That's part of why I'd like to see us go to the burgundy and gold throwbacks...the Ginas unis now are throwbacks from the 60s, I believe. Stuff that's old is cool again and the Skins should be getting in on that action...

I think the Giants new uniforms are good. I liked the 80's block font helmet but the NY is nice too.

Eagles have a classic helmet but they like the skins should look at some old school uniforms and go back to that. I would recommend for them to go to the Invincible late 70's look with the thick stripes and silver pants, also the old Eagle logo patch is far cooler than the current eagle head.

Cowboys are starting to look very 80's in the light blue pants.

Aside from the Giants the remaining 3 could use a neo-retro updating. BTW neo-retro updating is great.

Yeah, one of the bloggers over the weekend suggested MM was cut because he doesn't play special teams. When you are looking for the fifth wide receiver spot on a roster, it is a tie breaker to play on special teams. BTW, MK also doesn't do teams.

Totally disagree here. Giants wear near dirt-gray pants for crying out loud, and no stripes on the sleeves. Not sayin they are totally ugly, but that's hardly exciting to me.
The only thing really attractive about the eagles unis is that you can mix alot of black into the color scheme. I still think the numbers look hideous. I'll rate them slightly ahead of the skins just for the freshness of the design. The Giants rate lower IMO.

But when he came here to take over the team from JC....That's what you call using your Capital....

HE took his team, and JC8 never came back to the facility. Never tried to compete with him given his history of injuries. Nothing. He bowed down to the big dog (Shout out to Vick), and went where McNabb refused to go.

Did anybody happen to catch the Replay of Super Bowl III this weekend on the NFL network? For such an important game in NFL history, it certainly was a stinker. Some interesting things jump out to a modern viewer though. Even my girlfriend immediately noticed how much smaller the players were. Takes a couple of plays to notice that they were also noticably slower. The really interesting thing was how differently the games were ref'd. In the last quarter and a half I counted 3 incidents that would result in ejection and suspension today. They didn't even draw a flag in January of 69.

Epic fail. We have the best logo, the most interesting color combo (Blue/Red and Green/Black is less boring than Burgundy/Gold??!? Really?), and there are few unis more sexy in the NFL than our white on whites. I think only the Cards have a white on white variant that is close, but looks equally awesome.

I think that it is the simplicity of the Giants unis that makes them work so well. I especially like the fact that they wear grey pants with both the home and the away jerseys. The Redskins could certainly do something similar with gold (true gold, not mustard yellow) pants and burgandy (true burgandy, not red) jerseys or white jerseys. Jerseys would be based on the spear-on-shoulder throwbacks that everyone seems to like. I know the current helmet is popular, but I think it looks pretty dated at this point. I think simple designs makes for the best helmets. The current helmet design is way too busy, with the stripes and the indian head and the circle with feathers. Maybe there is a way to do a simplified and updated version of the indian head in maroon on a gold helmet along the lines of the PITT helmet from a few years ago that was gold with a blue panther head on it. That would look sharp and would retain the indian head, which I really love.

Ricky,
I think we will be okay at DB. Carlos Rogers and D. Hall are better than they played last year. They won't be asked to play a million miles away from the line of scrimmage this year - maybe even play a little bump and run - and this should improve their standing. Having two safeties playing the pass will give the added assurance to take some risks.

Tryon mades some steps last year and let's hope Barnes has made a few more steps. Westbrook is still around. They added Buchanan, who is great insurance in case those guys don't continue to progress. All in all, I think we'll all be happier with the secondary this season with a lot of the better play simply part of the scheme.

As far as no-names, I would have to agree with you on Capers, but I think Banks is too tiny to stand up to the rigors of the NFL. I'd add TE Logan Paulsen. The kid was a beastly blocker in college and occasionally can sneak out to catch a pass. He'll be part of their goal line package this year and will also be an emergency tackle.

I am hoping that Tryon continues to develop. I hope he spent another offseason with Darrell Green. That seemed to really help him last year.

Maybe this is the year that Landry plays up to the hype. After the season he had last year, there won't be as much pressure to make the big play, and as you point out, he'll be back to his more natural position. I honestly believe that Kareem Moore is going to beat out Doughty for the right to play alongside Landry.

Pre-Camp cheers:
1. Tight Ends
2. Brown trade
3. Carriker trade

Concerns:
1. Depth across the board. There is not one position where I think there is solid depth. In today's NFL it is tough to have solid depth but with the Skins it is tougher because they have squandered draft picks for years.
2. Adjustment to both offensive and defensive schemes. McNabb has played within 1 system his entire career. He is going to have to make adjustments. Only 1 or 2 of the guys in the front 7 have 3-4 experience.
3. WR - there is not a true #1. Moss is a 2 and there is nobody behind him as of yet. Need to see someone step up in the fall.
4. Oline - Is Brown healthy? Will TWilliams be able to play at a high level as rookie? Will Hicks or Mwilliams prove to be anything but back up level players? Will Rabach's play continue to decline?

7-9 3rd in the NFC East. Think they beat out either the Giants or the Eagles.

Yet here we are making more Hearsay reports about Fat Albert. Now I'm no fan play not play seems. Its all drivel without real facts. Go to where he is working out show that he is. Go show that he is having a big party and not working out prove he is or isn't that what reporting is about. Interview his personal trainer. Seems like a move even Fat Albert would want in this case. Things is if they actually did any of those things than they would have to think about other things to write creativity sadly seems dead.

No they wont do that they will cut and paste all the previous articles and try to make old content look new that is July at the WP.

I also agree what about those long shots? Who do we see getting cut around the league. Any of those players look promising to the Redskins.

I also agree the Picture, do I really have to look at a non redskin week after week? What the bet the next picture is Fat Al in another uniform.

Whatever it is lets hope they can step it up and offer something more than they offered of late.

Seems over the years that many writers and Ive seen a few are not real fans and post about the redskins with an almost anti-fan perspective. Granted its needed but sometimes we want to get a bit fired up about our team. Is their not one true fan at the Washington Post? I'm not claiming there is not as much as its a great time for them to show their burgundy and gold.
