Goodell would intervene on Haynesworth if "I can play a helpful role"

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met with Redskins' players Wednesday afternoon, and though he chatted privately with Albert Haynesworth after the team meeting, he did not speak with Santana Moss, who has acknowledged he was treated by a Canadian doctor accused of providing HGH to some clients.

Of Haynesworth, Goodell said: "He understands. He wants to get out on that field, he wants to make sure that he's performing as a Redskin. I hope he can do that quickly."

Asked if it's a situation that might require the commissioner's intervention, Goodell said he would assist "if I can play a helpful role..."I think these are issues that teams and players go through all the time," he said in a meeting with reporters Wednesday afternoon. "They
need to get resolved in a way that works for everybody."

"Albert wants to play football and he wants to get out there," he added. "He needs to be able to do that. But he needs to get himself in proper shape to do that."

Goodell also noted that he himself has taken conditioning tests in the past. Asked if he passed, Goodell said, "Oh, yeah. What? Does that surprise you."

As for Moss, Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan has said he doesn't anticipate the Redskins' receiver facing a suspension from the NFL for his involvement with Dr. Anthony Galea, who was charged in May with smuggling and distributing human growth hormone

While Goodell offered no such guarantees, a suspension does not seem imminent. "I don't make those determinations," he said. "I like to know the facts first."

Goodell said his staff has spoken with Moss, and they're apparently waiting for the criminal case to proceed.

"We're following it. It's obviously part of an overall criminal investigation [that] we obviously are cooperating with and following very closely," Goodell said. "Certainly when a determination is made, we'll determine our next steps."

HGH is an important issue for the commissioner's office and it is likely to be discussed as the owners continue to negotiate a labor deal with the NFL Players Association. Goodell said he has no idea how prevalent HGH use is in the NFL .

"You really don't know because we don't have a testing program, and that's one of the reasons we proposed...blood testing because that's the only reliable test that you have right now," he said. "We think it's necessary to protect the players' health and safety, but also the integrity of the game."

Shanahan has badly botched this whole AH drama. Long ago he should have figured out a way to settle it behind the scenes and get on with things. As the days roll on he looks worse and worse - if he relents in some way it will look more and more like he caved like a Neanderthal and if he doesn't AH will never get a chance to practice. AH has $41 M of guarnateed $$$ in his stash. He doesn't have any movtivation to be a team player or a Pro Bowler. All he has to do is show up and demonstrate minimal cooperation, not a biggie by any means. Shanahan should have realized that a public dick-standing contest with a star player is never going to end very well. Look at what happened with Major Tom and his "you're late if you're not five minutes early" policy. Strahan gave him the finger and he eventually caved and became much more "player friendly" to save his yob.

**REPOST** (yeah, I was serious) ;)

Heard on the way home that Plaxico should get out in 2-3 weeks. Do we go after him?

I'd say yes in a big way.

Only if the dud can pass the following conditioning test:

Two 300 yd shuttle runs in increments of 25 yds, with the first run completed in 70 secs or under, to be followed by a 3 1/2 min rest interval and a second run completed in 73 secs or under.

He has to be in good shape and know who the boss is.

Let's suppose that Shanahan stops requiring Fat Albert to take the test and lets him practice with the team.

How long will it be until he further agrivates his Knee under the riggors of practice? What other injuries will he sustain due to his lack of conditioning?
Do you really think his Knee won't be a lingering problem going into the season? How many games will he miss due to injury? How much impact will he have on the defense if he is too injured to play?

People on this blog rip on Colt Brennan (thank god he's gone) and Malcolm Kelly (who soon will be) all the time beacause they are constantly injured and therefore worthless. HELLO! Fat Albert hasn't played a full season since his rookie year. With his knee acting up before he has even been through ONE DAY of actual practice, I'll be shocked if he even plays HALF a season. Hell, I'll be shocked if he isn't going in for surgery before the season even starts.

Regarding Plaxico... No question... You want that big receiver that can get down field who won't cost 2 2nd round picks?? Nobody should be more eager/humble to step on a football field than him. These are just a rumor though, some are disputing his release.

Why does the press bother to interview Dan Snyder?? He is the most worthless interview I have ever heard... I've read 3 interviews today between Redskins.com & Hog Haven & he said absolutely NOTHING!! Damn Dan, can't you have an opinion on anything?? Here are 2 questions & the answers are a BIG FAT NOTHING:

LW: We have NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell coming to training camp and one of the things he’s talked about is, as the labor situation unfolds, the enhanced season with 18 regular season games. Are you in favor? Think it’s a good idea?

DS: “I think we’re always looking to improve the game and the fan experience, and we’re looking at that as a league. From my personal perspective, I feel anything we can do to improve the experience for the fan is terrific. I think anything we can do to continue the competitiveness is most important.”

LW: As a follow-up to that, do you think that an expanded season would lead to expanded playoffs?

DS: “I don’t know. We’ve missed the playoffs a few times here and there, usually by a game or so. But I really don’t know about that yet.”

Here, I'll answer them as a fan...

#1. HELL NO... How is Donovan McNabb supposed to play QB in the playoffs when he is in a wheel chair.

#2. Hell Yeah... Alot of people don't agree with 8 teams in the playoffs from each side because it waters down the league because 50% make it, but my point is this... You create an 8 team playoff bracket, take away the first week byes, and provide fans 2 more games of the most exciting football... do or die... otherwise your just watering down the league with more players resting because they have home field clinched. Furthermore, isn't home field advantage enough of an advantage to the #1 seed? Do they really need a week off also?? I really think your adding competitive balance. Too many times, these games are not as competitive as they would appear to be but yet the championship week seem to be very competitive with the away team winning their fair share.

No. Being verbally b'tch smacked by Goodell is just another nail in the coffin for Haynesworth.

If Shanahan's objective was to get an in-shape-and-motivated-AH into the line-up, while making the best of the previous regimes mess-ups, then he has done that. AH is in much better shape than last year and will pass the test when he is health. Shanny has used every means within his control to get what he can out of AH. AH is not practicing yet but this is actually simply another obstacle in this process which will be overcome.

Here is what Shanny started with when he inherited this team:
-Rotten conditioning of players
-Poor culture
-AH's huge contract and desire for a trade
-No pressure on AH to give anything to the team.
-People questioning if he was capable of winning without Elway.
-All kinds of personnel issues (ie qb, ol, rb, etc)

What has happened:
-Culture and conditioning has improved dramatically.
-Excellent personnel decisions so far, given what he had to work with.
-The entire NFL has attacked AH(including Goodell who seems to be endorsing the validity of conditioning tests).
-AH shows up lighter, not requesting a trade, and evidently (despite being hurt) willing to play as needed.

Result:
AH is really fighting to regain the respect he has lost from: team mates, fans, coaches, other players, because he has to. If his only motivation is money, considering what he could make in the future were he to be considered an elite player again, then he has lost immensely given that despite the payoff in 2010 he won't make much again until he proves he isn't a rogue.

This of course is the best of all potential outcomes. Shanahan has put ol' fatty in this position; when AH returns he will be giving his all, because that will be the only thing keeping his dollars up as well as ensuring all of western civilization doesn't hate him. There are some points in life where you learn you have made a tragic mistake and set to the best course of action given your ego has been put into check. This is what has happened with AH, I don't care that similar situations have turned out in a way that isn't appealing,on the surface, this one hasn't.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in most cases the most successful coaches are d-bags. Call it whatever you want, but for every Joe Gibbs and Tony Dungy, there's a Parcells, Belichick, Gruden, and Shanahan. Personally, I'm so tired of losing that I couldn't give any less of a sh*t HOW we win. I just wanna win. And nobody is more important to that effort right now than Mike Shanahan.

I just don't get the mindset that the guy who has 3 decades of coaching experience and two SBs is in the wrong and the spoiled, lazy, out of shape underachiever is the victim. Just boggles the mind...

Patently not true. The Skins players that have gone on record are types like London Fletcher and Phillip Daniels, who are obviously brown-nosing management for job security reasons. Here's my take on the WR situation.

Even before you look at the receivers themselves, there is reason to suspect better performance from them this year. First is a better offensive scheme which will use the WRs more effectively. Second is an improved O-line, giving the QB more time to make a play. Third, a higher quality QB. Fourth, an improved rushing attack to draw the defense closer to the LOS. Fifth, Our duo of top notch pass catching TEs.

On to the WRs:
Moss will return to higher production than under Zorn. His loss of production was primarily due to Zorn's poor offensive scheme, and the lack of another receiving threat other than Cooley.

I'm convinced Thomas will have a breakout year this season. I think he finally gets it. He has been putting in a lot of EXTRA work this offseason including working out with Chad OchoCinco and McNabbs hell week. He seems determined to proove he deserves to be the #2 WR, and no longer seems to have any feeling of entitlement. His sucess so far in training camp shows that his effort is paying off.

Roydell Williams was a question mark going into this offseason. We did not know how he would play after his injury. Indications so far in training camp are that he has returned to his pre-injury form. If we get the same kind of production from him as he got in Tennesee (55 catches for 719 yards) that would big a big contribution to our team as a 3# WR.

Austin is looking like a real find for a late round WR. He has been making as many big plays in Camp as ANY other WR. Even if gives us only an occasional big play, that can give the offense a big boost. I t appears that he has the potential to be even more.

Then if we have a 5th WR who gives us any production at all, we will have a better WR squad than we have had in YEARS! Certainly Galloway is at least good enough for that. If someone else (Armstrong, Hodge, Kelly) pushes Galloway off the roster and makes any kind of contribution, that's even better.

At this point I see no reason to bring in Plaxico or trade for V. Jackson (unless we can use that trade as a tool to get rid of Fat Albert).

WOW...are you serious with this? Brown-nosing management? Fletcher? You mean the MVP of the defense and THE TEAM LEADER? That guy? Amazing.

OR...they spoke out because they were here busting their humps to ensure that the stench of 4-12 is cleared out of Ashburn and drastic steps are taken to get out of the NFC East cellar.

But I'm sure you're right...AH has way more job security than Fletcher, especially after deciding he doesn't like a defense he's never played in BEFORE he's even tried it. How dare someone call him out for being the ONLY guy not at MANDATORY camp.

Either you're AH's agent or you're working your way through a stroke. Either way, good luck...

shanahan is a disciplinarian, but players like playing for him. do you not think players are loving this jog thru in the afternoon training camp (if training camp can be "liked")? he treats his players like men, and he expects them to act like men. why are we still debating a player's right to show up out of shape? if it's tough for him to pass the test, who's fault is that? should he sue his trainer? what? can he show that much commitment, enough to get in shape to play ball? wasn't he hurt and tired all of last year? should shanahan accept more of the same? his expectations are pretty simple, give 100% and act like you're part of a team. not too much to ask, imho.

First of all, why are you giving so much more weight to McNabb's thoughts over Fletcher's? Fletch plays the same side of the ball as AH and has been here much longer. The ink is barely dry on the McNabb trade and you're acting like he's built up years of equity to be the end-all-be-all authority on all things Redskins. I love that he's stepped in and become a leader right away, but let's not act like the guy is Darrell Green or something.

To answer your question, all I've heard from McNabb is that he'd called AH to get him to come and he said he really wanted AH to show up. Didn't go to the extent that Fletcher did (if I recall correctly), but it's understandable that he'd be more fired up about it since he's gotta play alongside the guy.

Look, we can agree to disagree on whether Shanahan is handling this well. Just don't give me the crap that he's like Coughlin or that his style doesn't work because that's waaay off base.

Your ettiquette is improving somewhat. It's crap now instead of working through a stroke. Which is about as low as I have seen posts go around here. Most of the time they suffice with the antics of various demeaning sexual acts that are easy to laugh at and laugh off. But to hypothesize about someone's serious health problems is downright creepy.

Can anyone explain to me why it's important for Dan Snyder to be giving interviews right now? It strikes me as self-involved to be drawing attention to himself with mea culpas but "aren't I doing wonderful now though" interviews. They haven't played a game yet.

If I'm Dan Snyder I keep my head down and let the evidence of organizational achievements do all the talking. If he really thinks this new management regime is going to work, then he shouldn't pre-empt that message by drawing attention to himself again. Or is he just a hopelessly self-centered doosh?

Let Coach Shanahan take care of team matters.

We all belly-ached about Zorn and his lite approach. Coach Shanahan has been fair with all the players. Said it before, in Shanahan, we have a coach that respects players that show respect for the team. AH has gone out of his way to disrepect the Redskin org. I think it would go a long way if AH bit the bullet and fell in line, doing the same things his teammates have done all summer, and be a TEAM player. Get on the field, pass the damn test, and think team 1st, as if you're the #53rd player on the roster.

Posted by: Pepper5 | August 4, 2010 8:58 PM

One complaint against him is that he's always been too remote and never appeared as the owner of the Redskins. I'm guessing that he went to Charm School, probably at Bruce Allen's suggestion. Personally, I'm all in favor of his talking about Zorn, Cerrato, and his view of himself as the team's owner.

Posted by: beep-beep | August 4, 2010 9:06 PM | Report abuse

I think he fell so far into a dark hole last year that now he must let actions speak and not words -- I think Stein on the other blog pretty much laid bare the extent to which this PR confessional is part of a longstanding pattern of his, nothing new...

But I'm just trying to get a discussion going here...

A question about Plaxico. How bad was the dammage to his thigh when he shot himself?
Could it have been bad enought to possibly affect his on-field performance? Anybody know?

If I were a coach/GM I would seriously examine these issues before I considered signing him to my team. It may be impossible for him to regain his previous level of performance. (not to mention questioning his intelligence. I mean, a pistol in the waistband of SWEATPANTS?)

The Broncos also offered a contract to free-agent running back Ladell Betts, but the former Washington Redskin turned them down, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported, citing a league. Betts has visits with other teams, including the New Orleans Saints, scheduled this week.

When they start the season in Sept. what is the goal? To win the Superbowl. Will they? No. This season is all about setting the tone of Shanny's regime. If he backs down it make him look like an ass is AH backs down it makes him look like a team player. He will get in line or move on, it's up to him. Keim's notes from yesterday's camp:

1. The Albert Haynesworth situation has become a circus. After the walk-through this afternoon he stopped and chatted with ESPN’s Hannah Storm. Hmmm, wonder why. Anyway (and I happened to be in the media room during all this because of a tight deadline), the media who watched this said it was a bit ridiculous. Said that they were prodding fans to ask Haynesworth questions about his knee. When one fan did, Haynesworth chided him. But he did sign autographs. And then he made his customary walk back to the facility trailed by about 15 media members. I don't know if Storm asked him about a 3-4; heard there was some talk about Tennessee. Really, this is getting absurd.

2. It’s amazing how many conspiracy theories are forming about this situation. I don’t believe this has become a stand-off. I do think that Haynesworth is genuinely hurt, or at least has a rather sore knee. Maybe I’m naïve, but if he wants out of here it’s not exactly good marketing to fail a conditioning test and then miss time because of a knee injury.

3. Richard Bartel threw a couple nice back-shoulder tosses to Brandon Banks along the sideline this morning. Bartel made a couple mistakes and was intercepted by Robert Henson. But the sideline tosses were nice.

4. I’m anxious to see Banks return some punts. But as a receiver? Tough to ever work him into the game. He’s just too short (no way is he 5-foot-7 as he’s listed). Defensive backs can run through him to bat balls down. This happened three times today. The key would be getting him the ball in space and let him use his quickness; turn it into a punt return situation where he has open field. Other than that? No way. But he did have a nice run on a play near the goal-line; it fooled the defense.

5. The defensive backs worked on defending double moves after practice this morning. They’d line up against one another and focused on knowing where to look so they wouldn’t get beat. They did this for a good 15 minutes.

6. Yes, Malcolm Kelly did not practice again. Yes, he apparently said he felt better today; honestly, he should considering he’s not doing much.

7. Devin Thomas had a nice sliding catch this morning. Not enough to get on the Studs list, but a good catch.

8. It’s safe to say that London Fletcher is very, very tired of answering questions about Haynesworth. When asked, he’ll always talk about the team in general.

9. I don’t know what the Redskins truly think about Stephon Heyer, but they have to be concerned about their backup right tackle situation. He just gets beat by everyone; even Rob Jackson got him today. If something happened to Jammal Brown now, I’d move Artis Hicks outside and put Chad Rinehart at right guard. Or I’d move Will Robinson to the right side (he worked some there today) and leave Hicks at guard. Either option is better.

10. Turns out Bruce Allen’s son is the ballboy catching Josh Bidwell’s punts during practice.

A former NFL executive, and several players, have stated that Haynesworth was set up to fail with the Shanahan Death Test. It is likely he injured his knee trying in good faith to do it. It is very doubtful that Shanahan can win this showdown.

The thing to do is conduct the test at some junior high field away from reporters and forget to start the stopwatch. Announce he passed and get on with it.

Posted by: ggreenbaum | August 5, 2010 6:43 AM | Report abuse

I see no reason why Albert should not talk with Hannah Storm. Shanahan's been running his mouth like there's no tomorrow. Haynesworth's right to do a little pushback. Suppose he says, "I first felt pain in my knee doing the Death Test. No one told me about the thing until I got here. Except for my injury, caused by that test, I am in the best shape of my career. If Coach seeks to punish or embarrass me further because of my getting hurt on his Death Test, the union will be filing a grievance. As for the fans calling me "Fat Albert" (takes off shirt and turns profile) Exhibit A. I look pretty good, don't you think?"

-The entire NFL has attacked AH ...

Patently not true. The Skins players that have gone on record are types like London Fletcher and Phillip Daniels, who are obviously brown-nosing management for job security reasons. Tne player who has the gravitas to speak for the team, McN, has not said anything derogatory about AH as far as I know. Has he? If so, educate me about it.

@Yammerstein-Not here to fuss, Champ. But well-respected current and former players such as Darnell Dockett, Warren Sapp, Strahan, Jared Allen, Jerry Rice just to name a few have ALL spoken their peace about Haynesworth. They all agree that the dude has brought this on himself. As far as Daniels and Fletcher, they are the two MOST RESPECTED DEFENSIVE PLAYERS IN THE LOCKER ROOM. Fletch has a SuperBowl ring, is among the league-leaders in tackles EVERY year, and is among the elite veteran MLB's in the league. They don't need to kiss a** to keep a job. McN has not said anything derogatory, but has long-stated that AH needs to get in here and be part of the team. The dude took that $21 mill, tried to demand a trade IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAKING THE MONEY, and now thinks because HE'S changed HIS mind, that he can just come right in and get in on shyt when he doesn't know the schemes, AND is not in shape?! #FOH

What if Albert is one of those players, like Bret Favre, who believes that training camp is useless wear and tear on the body? He could be just fine learning the schemes through the private sessions with Haslet.

Shanahan has badly botched this whole AH drama. Long ago he should have figured out a way to settle it behind the scenes and get on with things. As the days roll on he looks worse and worse ..."

Yadda yadda yadda...couldn't disagree with you more. Shanny's got Albert right where he wants him and he couldn't look better as a result.

Shanahan has totally screwed up this situation. I agree with what coach John Thompson said, "at what point do I want to beat the Cowboys more that I want to prove a point to my own guy". All of the pundits and former greats that railed against Albert are now railing against the absurdity of what he is doing. Further, how is he going to win a pissing contest against a guy that already has 31 million dollars and pulls up to camp in his Rolls Royce everyday. If he is trying to go old school, training camp was for getting the players in shape they did not have OTA's and all of that crap. He could let the man practice and do extra cario work on the side. If the test was so paramount to practicing no player would have been exempted. If the players that were here benefitted from the off season training program so much they should pass it with flying colors and there would be no need for an exemption. If Haynesworth is not in the lineup and the defense does not play lights out, the fan base will totally flip on him, becuase just as Haynesworth is not bigger than the game neither is Shanahan.
