Haslett says Haynesworth not the only member of the Redskins defense who played poorly

By Jason Reid

Although defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth has been roundly criticized for laying on the ground while Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick ran around Monday night before throwing one of his four touchdown passes, Haynesworth was among many defensive players, and coaches, who could have performed better during the 59-28 blowout loss.

"Well, he was not the only one" who struggled, Haslett said. "I know he said he had a charley horse. ... I was kind of watching the grand scheme of things.

"If he's gonna take a lot of heat, there's a lot of guys out there that could take heat for that play, because the quarterback held the ball for about eight seconds. ... I think he understands that we want to get him [Haynesworth] up and chase him."

Haslett said he was not aware of Haynesworth's problem on the play until he first reviewed the game film, beginning Tuesday "at three-thirty in the morning."

On Wednesday, Haslett spoke with Haynesworth. "He understands," Haslett said.

Unless he was scoring TDs for the other team, I guess not.

I wonder how this conversation went?

haslett should be fired he could not coach a pee-wee league team but you know he is a so-called white man and friend of the DIC-tater just like the coaches son their jobs are secure.

Giving up 59 points wasn't because of one guy who only played less than 1/2 the snaps. There's news.

For his flaws, I give LaVar credit as he has always said he was a skin at heart.

I blame the loss on the whole team, how can you not.

One thing was clear to me. We need a starting Free Saftey, and still are in need of a prototype 3-4 DE.

No kidding. Outside of McNabb, Moore has been the biggest disappointment for me this year (AH was always going to disappoint).

Hoping there is a huge FA market this offseason cuz we goin to need it for several positions.

I think AH would have to go into a profanity laced tirade blasting the team cook to match Moss.... but I'm pretty confident Haynesworth isn't the same picky eater as Moss is, so you'll get no complaints from him there.

Right. That seems really clever. Childress got cranky, blew his top, and let a player go. So the Redskins should try to do something even more stupid?

Did the defense not execute the game plan last Monday night or did Haslet just call a bad game plan. Which is it?

Posted by: stu_pid | November 18, 2010 6:48 PM | Report abuse

The team is struggling in the 3-4 defense because Haslett is not sticking to the 3-4. The scheme constantly changes based on the opponent's QB. The went 2-3 weeks without playing 3-4. Manning= one down lineman and a bunch of DB's, resulting in poor play. Vick= rushing only 3 DL and playing the LB's further back, resulting in poor play. Rookie QB= no pass rush & giving them 4-6 seconds to throw the ball. Maybe if Haslett stops changing his scheme and force the offense to adjust to his D, we could see some positive results.

Posted by: kingpenn1 | November 18, 2010 6:48 PM | Report abuse

We're not pressuring the QB ( Ditka said Sunday that HE could have been on pass coverage of the Super Bowl Bears defense, the pass rush was so good) and there's holes everywhere in Haslett's zone scheme, THAT'S why we have the worst defense in the league..24 points should have beaten the Lions, 28 points shoulda beaten the Eagles..If Haslett's defense had kept the Eagles in the 40's we might have won...Instead we got posterized and stamped into the losing end of the record books on Freakin' Monday Night Football!! Next time you sh*t the medieval Persian rug, don't do it on worldwide TV, please...

No...we cut Devin Thomas because Devin Thomas can't play. Galloway has NOTHING to do with that.

I mean, we have a guy from the Intense Football League starting for us. DT's new team starts an unheralded late round pick ahead of him. At what point do you arrive at the conclusion that the guy just doesn't have it?

This from Steinway:

Still, it seems like an awfully insensitive time to be asking Redskins fans to sign up for the waitlist. A waitlist that, lest you've forgotten, has 200,000 names on it. Were my business in possession of a waitlist with 200,000 names on it, I think I'd go ahead and stop trying to add more names unless people really, really, really insisted.

First off it ain't no 200k names. That's a myth created by some overzealous marketeer. Given the turd-grade product Snyder has put on the field, the list has far fewer than 200k names and is shrinking as we speak. The fan adrenaline from 3 SB rings in 10 yrs has faded to fumes and Snyder the businessman has to be thinking he may be missing a chance to sell out now when the price is still reasonably high since it ain't going to be getting no higher if he continues as owner.

DT has played in 33 games and has 40 catches for his career. He is in the record books as being the least productive WR to ever start in 10 games as a #2 WR, play in 14 and have only 25 catches.

He's so good he's been with the Panthers for 6 weeks and has been inactive for every game. He's their 6th string WR behind Smith, Clowney, Gettis, Edwards, & Lafell. He's behind Pugh, Goodson, and Sutton as their KR.

Special Teams Standout???? Devin Thomas was averaging 28/per while BB is averaging 27 with a TD and is ranked 4th in punt returns. BB set the franchise record for return yds in a game.

Less versatile?? Thomas only returned KOs. His hands were to poor for PR and he couldn't play WR. Banks can do it all.

You are truly dumber than a sack of dull hammers..

fat albert and meangelo are done after this seasone... book it...

New general manager Bruce Allen, however, appeared to be living up to his promises of operating differently than the previous regime (we’ve heard that before in Washington, no?). He shed a slew of former free agent mistakes – Randy Thomas, Antwaan Randle-El, Fred Smoot, etc.; restructured contracts of Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall to protect the team’s future Cap accounting; and was patient in rewarding McNabb. That restraint, though, ended yesterday.

Albert Haynesworth – everyone’s favorite punching bag this year -- had a $21 million bonus this year that was restructured in the manner described above to have the entire amount count in 2010 with no accounting in future years. DeAngelo Hall had a $15 million bonus restructured in the same manner. Both players had voidable clauses in their sole control, allowing them to cut short their contracts assuming they repaid their bonuses (which, of course, they would never do as that money has already been spent).

Thus, for Cap accounting, both amounts count solely in 2010 and are not prorated if and when the Cap returns in 2011 or beyond. That is $36 million of money hitting 2010, the year without a Cap, and no remaining Cap hits on that money in future years. And, perhaps best of all, the Redskins can now dump Haynesworth without Cap consequence next season, a move I fully expect them to make.

Why not continue to blame Jim Zorn?

Seemed to work just fine up here last year.

The Skins were also overdue for a good ass whoopin' --seems to whip around every three years or so... haven't seen a QB strafe us like that since Tom Brady back in 2007 -- 52-7.

Donovan McNabb's deal makes sense for him

It also makes sense for the Skins. If the reports of a rift between him and KS are true then McN has until the end of the season to cornvince peeps that he has gotten with the program. Otherwise the $3.5 M is comp for the clumsy way he was benched and the Skins should be able to find a serviceable QB somewhere to tide them over until they can draft a franchise QB. Giving up the valuable draft picks that they did to rent the dud's sevices for 1 yr is evidence that while MS may know his Xs and Os he ain't exactly Bobby B when it comes to being a GM.

Thats what happens when you try to build through free agency. The player is was developed by an organization and system. The change most of time ends up with the player not playing to the same level on the new team.

Rewind to 2007:

The Patriots scored 52 points today against Washington, tying the third highest single-game point total in team history. The 52 points was New England's highest total since Sept. 9, 1979, when they scored a franchise-record 56 points in a 56-3 win over the New York Jets. The Patriots' 45-point margin of victory over the Redskins is also the second largest victory margin in team history.

With three touchdown passes against the Redskins, Tom Brady has thrown for at least three touchdowns in all eight games this season, tying the NFL record for consecutive games with three or more touchdown passes. Brady also ran for two more touchdowns.

----------

Flash forward to 2010:

The Eagles' 28-0 first quarter lead was the biggest first quarter lead for a road team in NFL history.

Michael Vick moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time quarterback rushing list with 66 total yards on the ground.

The Eagles' 59 total points was the most scored by one team in Monday Night Football history.

Vick's three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in the first half was the first time in NFL history that any player had done as such.

Philadelphia's 45 points at halftime was a franchise record for most points after two quarters.

Vick was the 13th quarterback to top 300 yards passing in Week 10, the most for a single week in NFL history.

The 59 points was the most allowed by the Redskins since 1954.

Hey thanks for that. Maybe you can recap Super Bowl XVIII while you're at it.

Posted by: Diesel44 | November 18, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Consider the following:

1980 (6-10)
Unhappy with his contract and the Redskins’ failure to make the playoffs despite a 10-6 record in 1979, John Riggins sits out the season. His replacement, Wilbur Jackson, has more fumbles (10) than touchdowns (4). Jack Pardee guides the Redskins to a 3-0 finish, but it isn’t enough to save his job.

1988 (7-9)
The Redskins’ demolition of the Denver Broncos in the 1988 Super Bowl has fans fired up, but Joe Gibbs has the only losing season of his first tenure. After a 6-4 start, the Redskins lose five of their final six. The culprit is an anemic rushing attack led by Kelvin Bryant with just 498 yards.

2006 (5-11)
After a playoff year under Joe Gibbs, the Redskins add free agent Antwaan Randle El, but have a dismal, defenseless year, ranking No. 31 in the 32-team league. The only positive is the play of Ladell Betts, who replaces injured Clinton Portis at midseason, and rushes for 1,154 yards.

2003 (5-11)
With a win over the Patriots, the Redskins are at 3-1 in Steve Spurrier’s second season, but they follow with some of their most dismal play in team history, epitomized by a 27-0 home loss to the Cowboys as QB Tim Hasselback has a 0 efficiency rating. Two days after the season, Spurrier resigns via fax.

2009 (4-12)
The Redskins finished their 2009 season on January 3, 2010 with a 23-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers. The next day, in the early morning, neophyte head coach Jim Zorn was fired. They finished with the 2009 season with a 4-12 record.

1994 (3-13)
The Redskins make Heath Shuler the No. 3 pick overall in the draft, but he is out-played by the 197th overall pick in the same draft, Gus Frerotte, who leads the Redskins to a 41-27 win over the Colts in his first NFL start. As a starter, Shuler goes 1-7 and finishes the year with efficiency rating of 59.6.

2000 (8-8)
Coming off a playoff year, the Redskins add LaVar Arrington and Chris Samuels via the draft and an offseason spending spree nets free agents Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, Mark Carrier and Jeff George. But the Redskins struggle, coach Norv Turner is fired and things only get worse under Terry Robiskie.

1993 (4-12)
When Richie Petitbon clubbed the Cowboys, 35-16, in his head coaching debut after the first retirement of Joe Gibbs, fans were drinking the Kool Aid. But the aging Redskins followed with losses in their next six games.

Haslett said exactly what I was talking about yesterday. I find it ironic that the only players that have made plays on this defense (judging by the numbers there's only a few plays that have been made) get the most request to be booted off of the team (excluding BO). Landry, Hall, and AH. Why is that? Landry has a bad game and all of a sudden he goes from a potential PB safety to some of the bloggas saying he needs to play LB.

If the media that exist today existed in the 80's the bloggas would demand Rypien be cut, and Diesel would hate Riggins and his well documented practice habits along with his refusal to block for Joe Washington.

And F U Diesel because I have supported AH (regardless of that 1 play) but mostly for calling me Pabrian-esque yesterday!

You couldn't be more wrong. I call it like I see it. Riggo has the signature play in Redskin history, bar none. He was making annually what AH makes in 2 weeks. Riggo left everything he had on the field and is a Super Bowl MVP and in the HOF because of it. AH has more talent than anyone outside of Landry but has no heart and is a quitter.

You support AH based on what? Not to rehash the whole saga, I'll just go with the last 4 days….Quit on the team and then said his heart was still in Tennessee.

If you ever mention AH and Riggins in the same post again, I will reach through my computer and give you friendly beat down, but a beat down nonetheless.

Redskins aim to clean up historically low 21.6 third-down conversion percentage

Through nine games, the Redskins have converted a league-worst 24 third downs - nine fewer than any other team. Twelve teams, in fact, have converted at least twice as many third downs. The numbers are so bad, in fact, that the Redskins currently have the worst third-down conversion percentage of any NFL team since 1991, when Stats Inc. began tracking such figures.

First off it ain't no 200k names. That's a myth created by some overzealous marketeer. Given the turd-grade product Snyder has put on the field, the list has far fewer than 200k names and is shrinking as we speak.

Posted by: ElDrano | November 18, 2010 7:53 PM

I don't know how many names are on it, but I know mine's on it, because they've called me twice so far this season.

Can't afford it right now, so I've declined both times. Plus, since I'm in Washington State, I'd have to sell off almost all of my tickets and just keep tickets to maybe two games. But they'd be 400-level seats, and if I'm going to spend the money to fly out for a game, I don't want to sit in the nosebleeds.

If I were local and it were only an hour's Metro ride to get to FedEx, I'd probably do it.

It's pretty awesome. Had some amazing evening going after Tarpon outta Hawkes Key. Biggest one was about 7 feet and over 100 lbs. Towed the boat 1/4 of a mile. Amazing fish. Gotta do it the last week in May. Catch all you want.

I also HIGHLY recommend the shark fishing off of Key West. Got into some 9 - 10 foot 300+ pounds lemons last time out. Arms were VERY tired after boating those beasts.

Crazy.

Really - what temp is cold? But good for you.

On the East Coast, they follow the Gulf Stream up the coast. Most of the Charter Captains I sailed with said you don't see them until the water gets warm in the summer and it doesn't get warm enough for them to much further north than VA.

Off of Mexico (Isle Majures in the Caribean Sea) the sailfishing rules the day.

That's pretty fortunate.

I have yet to hook a Blue (or Black for that matter) but hope to next summer.

Hope you get yours soon. Nothing like the pull of a great fish.

I'm out.

Fat Al NOW UNDERSTANDS HE'S SUPPOSED TO GET UP AND CHASE THE QB!!! I always thought AH was dumber than a box of hammers, and here's the proof. " Al, here's 100 mil, and remember....chase the qb. Even if you fall, Al....get up and chase the qb"
How many more games do we have to suffer through? Somebody help me........

NO, he had 15 actches as a rookie 25 as a sophomore, and was a special teams standout who averaged MORE than BB on KRs and played k cove and p cover.

Galloway, Williams, Paulsen CAN'T PLAY and Banks is less versatile.

don't re-write history to serve YOUR opinion

Haynesworth isn't the only member who "laid down" in the Eagles game. Even Haslett laid down. This defense is horrible and Haslett is horrible. This was a top ten defense the past few years and the only bright spot on this team. Haslett comes in and BAM, we are damn near last if not last. This is a complete joke on all sides of the ball. We can't run, pass, block ANYTHING. That game was a sham. The Eagles made us look like straight crap the entire game. 28 points in half a quarter, are you kidding me. Chad Dukes gets flack because he says the Skins owe us something. They do and he was right. How long are we supposed to watch Dan Snyder spend money like it going out of style and never get anything from it. This man needs to rebuild this team from the ground up, NOW. How has he not seen this? How has he and other in that front office allowed draft picks to leave this team year after year and not get anything for it. Players come here to get paid and now it seems coaches are too. Mike and Kyle are no good and i don't care what they did before. You're only as good as your last super bowl. There is no direction on this team and hasn't been for a very, very long time. I am convinced that as long as Snyder owns the team and refuses to rebuild entirely the Redskins will always be what they are currently. This has gone on for too long, way too long.
