Haynesworth-to-Titans chatter continues to percolate

There has been a lot of buzz around the league today about the possibility of a trade that would soon send Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth back to the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans drafted Haynesworth and helped him develop into arguably the NFL's most dominant defense player during the 2007-08 seasons. Tennessee quickly was identified as the leading team to acquire the two-time all-pro when word emerged Haynesworth was not interested in moving from a three-technique 4-3 tackle to the nose position in a 3-4 scheme.

Well, during the Titans' mandatory pre-draft media availability today, Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt declined to specifically discuss Haynesworth -- "He is under contract with another team so I can't talk about him,'' Reinfeldt said -- but he also did not rule out the possibility of the team completing a trade soon.

Reporter Jim Wyatt, who covers the Titans for The Tennessean, knows as much about the team as any media person in that market, and his sources have indicated to him that the Titans are interested in reacquiring Haynesworth and have talked to the Redskins about a potential trade. The Redskins have already paid Haynesworth $32 million, including a $21 million bonus April 1, of the $41 million in guaranteed money he is scheduled to receive as part of his $100 million contract.

Haynesworth, who starred at the University of Tennessee, flourished under Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn, reveled in playing in his former team's 4-3 defensive scheme and still spends much of his time in the state. In text messages to a reporter Monday, several Redskins veterans expressed concern that Haynesworth's situation could become a distraction if he remains on the team.

Owner Daniel Snyder was the driving force behind luring Haynesworth, the top player in the 2009 free agent class, to Washington with a then-record total for guaranteed money in a contract. Obviously, the Redskins would be acknowledging they made a huge mistake if Haynesworth is traded after only one full season.

It appears, however, that keeping Haynesworth on the roster might be an even bigger mistake.

Hey, Jason, turn on your TV. ESPN is humping the McNabb-TO reunion story like it's a done deal. They're not talking about Haynesworth.

Seems about right. The most expensive rental of the Snyderatto regime turns out to be its last... This year sees the last payment on the Jason Taylor rental too, but at least we can put the long nightmare behind us. New sheriff in town. No more insane balloon payments to people with balloon shaped heads.

We won't keep AH... he was one of my favorite players in the league & was psyched when we got him but he is a typical "ME" athlete & there is no way, from what we have seen, he is going to be the highest paid player in the Redskins locker room.

ShanAllen are attempting to build a cohesive football team & they will not accept individualism (as seen by previous Portis trade to Redskins).

I just hope we get at least our #2 back, because he is one talented dude... My fear is they may be willing to accept less since they possibly robbed the Rams of Carriker. At least we're not stupid enough to trade him within the division like some other front office we know... out of the conference is a great place for all.

I am sure that JR can defend himself, but some of you need to grow up. So what if he is repeating something that another news organization reported first? Not everyone who reads this blog also spends the rest of their free time reading every other sports blog or news article relating to the Redskins or the NFL, so if JR does read other news reports and then passes the information along to the rest of us, so much the better. Your whining is misplaced and immature.

Where is peabrain2003?

I really want him to see me say this:

If Skins trade down they should grab a LT.

If Skins can't trade down they should grab a LT.

The Skins need to address the O-line this year.

percolate is a great word on this day...420 b!tches, get rid of haynesworth, worst free agent signing ever.

I don't normally care how much of The Danny's money the team wastes, 'cause Danny boy still has lots of it (despite the Six Flags debacle), but it really is insane to trade a guy that you just handed a $21 million check, and it so happens, is (most of the time) one of the most dominate DTs in the league, apparently just to make a point - especially for something as comparatively small as a 2nd round draft choice. Al needs to be a Redskin, at least for another year or two. He can be a very useful player if his ego is stroked correctly.

Posted by: skinsfan713 | April 20, 2010 6:42 PM | Report abuse

Signing Haynesworth to begin with was a complete mistake...if we can get some more picks for the guy get him outta here.

Love the Carriker trade...got him for next to nothing. Now all we need is a couple LBs and the D might not be half bad this year...

If by "rule" you mean "maintain obscenely unrealistic expectations for a team that has NEVER won a Super Bowl, has (ironically) never enjoyed more success than in the McNabb/Reid Era and couldn't possibly appreciate it less" then yes...agreed.

I've never hated on JReid, and won't start now. I was simply talking about this particular instance. To summarize something found on another site is one thing, but to blatantly lift both the PFT story and the linked article from the Tennessee paper.....well, as I said, that's just not journalism, blog or no blog.

And for the record, I like Reid a heck of a lot better than LaCanfora, who seemed to hell bent on sticking it to the Skins (or at least the ownership/management) every chance he got.

The reason why there is speculative chatter is because of the Carriker trade. That's it. No other change.

Also, Joe Biden did not address the Haynesworth situation, nor did he specifically mention the Redskins during a benefit luncheon yesterday afternoon. Write about that.

Posted by: BrooklynSkins | April 20, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

My takes...

It makes no sense to predict wins and losses before the draft...so I won't.

To me, the Albert Haynesworth acquisition and now possible trade puts an exclamation mark on the failures of this franchise. Let's look at this...

We gave picks to move into the first round to get Jason Campbell...

We gave up a draft pick for friggin' T.J. Duckett...

We made Adam Archuleta the highest paid safety in history...

We gave Brandon Lloyd a BIG new contract when he still had years on his old one...

We gave two picks and 8 million to Jason Taylor...

We JUST paid Albert Haynesworth 21 million dollars of a 42 million dollar contract...

You cannot win this way...

-BUT- having said that...

If this trade happens, I gotta give Snyder some credit for being willing to exorcise the Vinny demons...you almost have to.

For those that want to equate the McNabb trade with the "same ol' Skins", you are wrong.

McNabb is not Brunell
McNabb is better than Campbell with or without an O-line
You didn't want to draft a rookie...now you don't want a pro bowler.

I will post my analysis of this team during training camp when things are clearer.

back off Carl739...you're off base... This story goes out to a Reporters Pool combined with a Conference Call. You will find it everywhere, including the quote. All reporters have access to this.. You just happen to only be reading PFT and RI so, you think one is stealing from the other.

I wonder what kinda of verbal lashing J.Reid will deliver to his "sources close to the situation" if no trade for Haynesworth occurs.

The way "The Mayor" is speculating about a Haynesworth trade it seems it's only a matter of when, not if...

...if that's the case I hope we don't trade Hayney for the sake of trading him and that we actually get good value. I wouldn't take anything less than a 2nd and 4th rounder.

Posted by: Vicc | April 20, 2010 7:03 PM | Report abuse

There has to be a trade in the works between Titans and Skins,or between Skins and somebody for Haynesworth. Its been to many signs pointing to it this week,Obtaining DE's Greg Peterson and Adam Carriker ,NT's Anthony Bryant and Howard Green, and also resigning Anthony Montgomery. Any of these guys aren't on Haynesworth level, but all have experience in the 3-4 scheme. All of these guys with the exception of Bryant should make the 53 man roster. Maybe the trade will consist of AH for a 2nd/3rd and a next years 3rd/4th and a player maybe DT Kevin Vickerson or OT Mike Otto, but it won't just be AH straight up for a single draft pick unless its a 1st (which I doubt).

Well done Lisa. I voiced my displeasure with the media b4, although TheCork made me pay 4 it; The media, like lawyers, can do no wrong...drip drip sarcasm drip.

Look what the media did to Portis. They only report negative slants to anything Portis does. Look what they are doing to Haynesworth, who's only crime apparently was getting paid. I believe it was pabrian2003 who pointed out that Haynesworth played more than any other D-linemen on our team last year. But somehow the media has puppets believing that fat Albert should play every snap!

Chill out. It's a blog. There's only so much info to go around. News has been circulated like this for forever. You know nothing of journalism. It happens with politics, disasters, you name it.

Maybe PFT is your first source. It's not mine. I have a busy schedule and mostly only have time for popping into Redskins Insider to learn what's up.

Whether I learn it an hour early or an hour late doesn't matter much to me. Whether PFT or Jason Reid said it first doesn't matter to me.

If the site doesn't meet your needs, stop the bellyaching and go stay on PFT.

FWIW, I think Reid is doing a great job here and genuinely like his work. Much better, in fact, that LaCanfora who was a little too negative and I think let his animosity with ownership affect his job.

Haynesworth is such a lazy bum. Tennesse shouldn't give up more than a 4th round pick for his fat behind. Carter, for one, will be glad to see that jerk gone. Carter can go back to 2 sacks per year. Orakpo will have a monster year cause teams will be so preoccupied double teaming Phillip Daniels.

Yes, let's send Albert home. The defense was actually rated much higher before his arrival and the overall team cohesiveness will be better when he is gone.

Meanwhile, Donovan has already established himself as a leader and teammate willing to put in the time needed to establish rapport on the offense.
