Mike Shanahan says Albert Haynesworth is not on trading block

Coach Mike Shanahan expects Albert Haynesworth to be on the roster this season.

"We don't have him on the trading block," Shanahan told reporters on Thursday night. "Does that mean we won't listen to anything that would happen? No. But it would be us listening. I would not anticipate him going anywhere unless he doesn't come to our [training] camp. I'm looking forward to him coming in and competing at different positions and seeing how he practices and helps our organization."

"Mike Shanahan says Albert Haynesworth is not on trading block"...

Famous last words...However no need to trade our ONLY elite player for pennies on the dollar.

First and foremost to say the Skins are better with Albert than without.

Good. Keep him.

Trade Campbell and Rocky Mac if you can for mid-rounders. Consider Cooley for a second or early third.

Carter has the most trade value he will ever have, given his sack total and age. I would consider trading him for a third rounder.

These guys either don't fit in the new scheme, or are an area of depth that can be replaced.

None of them are game changing elite players like Albert that would leave a giant hole to be filled.

None of them would bother me to much if I saw them wearing the other teams uniform lining up against us on Sunday.

I would hate to ever see Albert lining up over Rabach wearing another teams' helmet. We would need a new Qb or two at the end of that game.

will i be shocked if AH plays for skins next season, no....will i be shocked if he is traded, no.

but believe absolutely they were talking trade for the last three weeks, why else would jeff fischer have to close the door on the deal publicly?

Big AL just needs to get his butt to work and earn some of that 40 plus million that he's sitting his fat ass on. What a waste and what a joke.

Checking in to say I like day 1 of this draft for the Skins. If they can't get at least a second for AH92 or a nice package of multiple picks, then keep him -- he will get with the program when Shanny gets in his grill and challenges his manhood.

Turning to the rest of the NFC East, J P-P is an interesting pick for the Giants. I worry he will be giving us fits for years to come, but you never know with a guy who has played so little football in his life. Dez Bryant with Miles Austin is a tough tandem in Dallas - Skins may need to improve their secondary to deal with that and the Eagles young WRs. Speaking of Eagles, I really think they messed up by trading a first and TWO thirds to move up to get Brandon Graham. If I were an Eagles fan I would be unhappy with that move.

TEBOW IN THE FIRST ROUND TO DENVAH!! Dude, just start running through those high-altitude mountains...Plenty of churches out there to keep your head in the clouds, though...AAh, Jesus is lord, it's true, just them damn churches is scoundrelicious!!...

edvar not a shot in hades carter gets a third and pass the bong about jc....7th rounder would be a steal. If rocky gets a 5th...take it and run.

i'd love to face what teams did to away from him and set up 3rd and shorts where he will then take himself out for a blow...

Albert is a good man..He can be self indulgent (who ain't), but he's a good player when he steps up..Obviously influenced by the forces around him, last year's 4-12 team was not a good standard for any self-respecting Redskin to live up to, who wasn't disgruntled last year????

Posted by: frak | April 23, 2010 12:08 AM | Report abuse

I think Tebow has lots of potential in the right situation but I am not at all sold on the boy wonder, Josh McDaniel, at Denver. I think that is a bad situation for Tebow and I don't expect him to thrive there. Sitting behind Kyle Orton is not like Steve Young sitting behind Montana. I also think Denver could well lose 10 games this season.

I'd probably take a 5th for Rocky.

The rest, I think your nuts.

Am I reading this right JR? Is this Shanahan finally saying that he might use Haynesworth as a DE, not just a nose tackle? Or a DT? Sounds like a compromise to me!? Haynesworth is talented enough to be an impact player anywhere on the defensive line at a pro bowl level. Heck, I bet he could even play a good line backer in the 3-5? But is this what Shanahan is saying?

MS obviously put it out there that AH might be available - didn't like what he heard - and plans to keep him for now at least. He's being shrewd. No sense giving away a player they've invested so much in.

Posted by: skinswest | April 23, 2010 12:24 AM | Report abuse

Yeah!! Jason, what about that ocean front property in Arizona? I've been saying for weeks the Redskins are not going to trade Albert Haynesworth. Dan Snyder did not learn to make millions by being stupid.

The decision to trade or not to trade Haynesworth was not going to be made by the coach, that decision was going to be made by the man that has just paid him 21 mil$.

Posted by: MHEDRLT | April 23, 2010 12:51 AM | Report abuse

We should take the same trade back for AH as we got for McNabb or no deal at all... what's a 2nd rounder & conditional 3rd/4th rounder 2010 for a Pro Bowl DT, who has to be game planned for every week.

Danny didn't pay $40 million to just give him away, so some team can enjoy our benefits of a reasonable contract from this point forward. I don't care if he don't play an F'n down... that's his problem, he is under contract.

He needs to stop being a scared boy & get to practice & learn something new... He can play DE in 3-4 on running downs & he can play NT in 3-4 on passing plays.

I mean, if the people stay on this roster... on 3rd & 12... we could have Orakpo, Carter, Haynesworth, Wilson, Jarmon, or whatever combo you want with Orakpo, Carter, & AH coming... that would put a lot of pressure on any line.

Maybe the fact that no other team was willing to part with much for Haynesworth will convince him that he needs to get his fat behind into the workouts and become a team player.

Now that the "they DID draft a lineman" Euphoria fade, reality sets in.

Giants, Eagles and Cowboys all got good players AND have a reason to show up to the draft Friday night.

The Redskins STILL have their fewest picks in the 2010 draft, can't trade Campbell Haynesworth, Coleman or anyone else, it appears.

Meanwhile denver, NE and some others maneuvered brilliantly in the first round. Even Detoit is sitting pretty.

As Mickey Newbury once asked: ""How many times must the piper be paid for his song."

Despite ceaseless speculation and rumors, don't expect Jason Campbell or Albert Haynesworth to be traded. The FO have played their hand about as bad as it can be played.

(BIG) If any of these two players do get traded, you can bet all the value will go to the other team. Knowing that, I have to assume that Shanallen won't pull any triggers on the low ball offers we receive.

We were a 4-12 team, so quite honestly I'd prepare for nobody to bail us out and trade for one of our 4-12 players.

As long as you had no expectations of recouping any picks before the 6th round, you, like I, won't be surprised or upset with this fact!

This week seems to be the worst week possible for trading players and getting picks in return. Picks are overvalued right now.

Giving up ernie sims for a 5th? Silly. Giving up Ted Ginn for a 5th. Nuts. Giving up Carriker to move up 30 spots ... in round 5. Are you kidding?

This is the week to trade picks for players.

There will be a better time to trade players. Just wait.

#4 T Williams OT OU
#37 D McNabb QB NFL

I don't care what anybody says, this is already a homerun draft that addressed the two most glaring weaknesses on the team.

OK, here's me turning the light on LS.

Like I said last night, I would be a bit more excited if we got Okung but I'm just happy we got a LT and not a damn safety. Sounds like we got the better fit for what we run here, which over the last several seasons has been a foreign concept. Glad to see us look like we know what we're doing for a change.

Can't wait to see if we can make a move for a pick or two in today's portion of the draft. God knows we could use the picks.

Then again, maybe He doesn't...seeing how Tebow is in Denver now...

A League-Source explains why we didn't trade Albert Haynesworth to the Titans
Here's how the conversation went:

Bruce Allen: Dan, Tennessee will give us their first round and third round picks for Albert, but they won't give us back any of the signing bonus.

Dan Snyder: Will you use the picks on wide receivers, running backs, and safeties?

Bruce Allen: We need O line. That's where we'll use the picks.

Dan Snyder: Tell 'em "No deal."

Think about this. What happens in Buffalo if CJ Spiller has an Akili Smith moment? The Bills are struggling to stay viable in Buffalo with an owner in his 80's. If something like that were to happen, they could end up in Toronto or LA sooner rather than later. There is a lot riding on his health.(knees) Not that I really care about the Bills...just seems like a ballsy move.
As for the Skins...Who made themselves better than we did with the first two rounds? OT (hope he's the right one) and McNabb is pretty strong.

Get TW signed and in the weight room.

Posted by: Diesel44 | April 23, 2010 6:53 AM | Report abuse

I think Shanny knows what he is doing. He did not say that Fat Albert would not be traded..just that the Skins would not be calling around. First..if Washington called around..his value would be a lot less than if another team came to us. Albert may be a spoiled donkey`s rear, but he is a force when on the D line.
Trent can get stronger in the weight room, and he is one super athlete. I think the team sees more of an upside with him vs. Okung. while it will take a couple of years to finally see which guy is better, both will (baring injury)will be successful at the final level.
They have 3 more potential with some non-drafted players, and other players made available fro other teams as things move forward.
Since there was not a lot of interest in guess is that they will keep him as the backup for this year. Of course if one or more QB`s around the league get injured then that could open some other possibilities.

Nobody wants FA. Danny and Vinny were the chumps on that deal. The Skins are stuck with him. I think they'd trade him in a second for a 2nd rounder.

Not sold on the Trent Williams pick. Wasn't that dominant in college. Players who get picked for upside, usually never reach that upside. I think Okung might be the better pick.

I agree.. he may not have a great attitude but he contirbuted to 11 of Orakpo's sack and 11 of Carters sack. The man is a beast and makes our defense much better

Posted by: pathmo | April 23, 2010 8:50 AM | Report abuse

It's smarter to keep Al than to ship him off for anything below a first round pick. He's too much of a difference-maker and has already gotten a huge chunk of his contract to be sold on the cheap.

It just really ticks me off that he doesn't feel he needs to do what the team asks him, after all the money they paid him. Snyder really botched this situation with the structure of this contract. He left the team with no leverage in a case like this.

Not if you were the guy assigned to block him. Say what you want about the guy's work ethic, or lack thereof, but no other defender on our team consistently draws double-teams, thereby freeing up other guys to make plays

Posted by: rbpalmer | April 23, 2010 9:00 AM | Report abuse

Hey Jason -- I agree that Haynesworth makes the defense better when he plays, however I don't like the fact that he's a loner, introverted, and his actions show he's not been a team player. Maybe Shanahan can help him grow up and understand the importance of being a member of a team...

And for the record -- Haynesworth is not fat -- he's in pretty good shape for a guy who's 6-6 330lbs. You'd be tired too (assuming you're not flattened like a pancake) getting double teamed by 600+ of offensive linemen every play.

The trade talk was all rumor and innuendo started by JLC and parroted by other reporters after Philly told him that the Skins were willing to include Haynesworth in the McNabb trade [BEFORE they paid him the 21 million dollar bonus].

Sounds like am out to me.. Can't believe Shanahan wants AH back. Also Shanahan did try out QB's after he got McNabb.. why if he didn't want one. Did Shanahan know Clausen would still be available when he said this???

Posted by: sovine08 | April 23, 2010 10:31 AM | Report abuse

Shan needs to tell him he'll trade him to Oakland next season regardless the cost if he doesn't get with the program

Posted by: fansince78 | April 23, 2010 11:22 AM | Report abuse

Competing at different positions has to sound good: Throw him a bone and let him get a couple sacks a game by rotating with Jarmon or another DE, but make him start at NT
