Redskins' handling of Albert Haynesworth in practice raises questions

It's unclear whether the Redskins plan to trade defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth, but their handling of him so far this week raises questions.

If Haynesworth is in the team's plans for the season opener against Dallas, as Coach Mike Shanahan seemed to indicate Monday while addressing reporters at Redskins Park, then why has he participated in so few plays during the first two days of practice?

Two team sources said Haynesworth had few reps during the practice sessions, which is highly unusual if the Redskins want him to be prepared to face the Cowboys.

Also, the Redskins this week for the first time began to use another player at nose tackle, one of the team sources said. Previously, starter Maake Kemoeatu and Haynesworth, the second-string nose, worked primarily at the position during practice.

But defensive coordinator Jim Haslett has said the Redskins plan to have players play multiple positions throughout the season.

"Whoever plays in this game, we alternate [so] it doesn't make a difference," he said Monday. "You can say they start, they don't start - it really doesn't make a difference because whoever is up [active], all of them play."

Besides, McNabb said we need him.

It's all part of Shanny's mad-science. Right about now, Dallas-fan, The Fade, Bony Homo, Doug Free-Bird and Dez "My Mom's A Hooker" Bryant are all breathing a sigh of relief with this perceived notion of not having to prepare for Fat Albert.

Pretty soon, Shanny is going to take the leash off Haney like Peter North takes off his condom just before the money shot.

Haney is going to chow down on some Wendy's Chili pregame and sit on Tony Homo and blow the world's raunchiest heater right into his mouth.

Romo might even miss a week.

some insider we have, posts went up at 10 this morning about the skins trying to trade Al to the Titans, it's all over the web, except here on the "insider".....what a joke....and if the skins trade their best defensive player then Shanny is nuts. I know he's the boss and his say is final but if he does this then it's time to wait for Danny to hire the next "coach of the future to return the team to glory". come on, who fires their best player less than a week before playing the cowgirls?!?

This post makes me strangely aroused.

My sources indicate that the Redskins will host the Cowboys this sunday night. My sources also said Al Michaels will laugh at Larry Michael when he excited the elevator before the game.

Posted by: MajorFacemask | September 7, 2010 3:11 PM | Report abuse

If they move him to end, then they will need another guy to help back up at nose. (My best guess would be Carriker is seeing a few reps there.) As far as being limited in practice, it could just be giving the guy a break after playing the entire game last week.

This has to be making the coaches in Dallas scratch their heads. Who will be lining up against them? Do they hold out their two injured tackles because Haynesworth might not be there? Will he be over center?

Didn't the coach just ask the media yesterday to avoid reporting these types of things? Since it's the team that sets the guidelines, I'd think a professional journalist would respect the request.

If there was any doubt why you have no sources, no prospects and no credibility, those doubts just got clarified.

Wasn't it you and your little buddy LaCanfora that tried to rat out the team a couple years ago to the NFL league office?

Now I see why JLC got that job, and why your probably gunning for the same thing before you get run out of DC on a rail.

JLa was good when he first came to RI, then as time went on it seems he made his living beating up the Redskins because the organization made it easy to do so.

Now Shanny won't tell reporters anything and they seemingly have to "invent" things to gripe about. Very unprofessional.

I wonder what JLa is going to say when the Redskins win the division this year?

Posted by: AdamCr | September 7, 2010 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Am thinking a lot of this is Shanahan smoke screen. Dallas must surely know that the best way to gain big yardage this weekend is to run it right up the gut at the Drama Queen -- that is, whenever he deems himself available to join his "teammates" on the field.

Since you can't really hide this 6'6" -- 330 pound, selfish and lazy oaf -- the best you can hope to do is put out a little disinformation and maybe get the other team thinking about doing something other than running it right at and though our weakest link.

Personally, would love to see AH92 out of here on the next available plane, train, bus, motorcycle, boat, truck or automobile. And barring that, any skateboard, horse cart, ice cream truck, barge or beer wagon will do.

But until it happens, we gotta figure that the lunkhead will still be around and out there, just stinking up the joint.

I'm sick of reading about this guy. Haynesworth had a "fair" amount of work Thursday night.

The Skins don't start game planning for Dallas until Wednesday. It's not unusual that he doesn't get much work before then. Besides, if he needs anything . . . IT'S MENTAL REPS . . . TECHNIQUE REPS. He doesn't even no the nuances of either position he's "trying" to learn.

On another issue . . . how in the world can you even suggest that the Redskins and the Rams would try to cheat someone out of $250K(+/-)? Cheap shot!

Report on something that's important (or maybe something that's actually happening) for a change.

About what does he have to be bitter? He got out of a dying media forum and is making a lot more money. And whether he's bitter or not, everything you state he said is true. Kemo and Golston are ordinary at best. JGalloway, who is old, hasn't played in nearly two seasons and got fired by the Pats, is a starting WR and everyone behind him is young and unheralded.

Bitter? shouldn't be. he landed on his feet. Accurate? Perhaps so.

On D, the skins Defense is iffy even with a fully participating Haynesworth. Lots of people playing new positions, a new philosophy. The linebacking corps is average.

On offense, this may some day BE a very good collection of receivers, but right now the top four are MOSS, a Dallas killer, an aged Galloway, the head case Devon Thomas and for all intents and purposes a rookie in Armstrong.

Add to that an O-line that hasn't jelled yet and a guy who didn't light it up against the 'pokes last year at QB.

On the plus side, the TE's are certainly top ten, if not top five.

One of the 5 worst -- would have to look carefully to see if we're that bad. Don't think so, but we're well below average. According to the FF ratings, Santana Moss is #27 and Joey Galloway is 56 and Devin Thomas is 71. Not that those ratings are all that good, but its an indicator that we're pretty low.

Off the top, I'd say those that are comparable or worse are:
Oak, TB, Cle, Buff, Chi, StL, Sea, Den, Tenn and maybe Jax.

As for the defense, Albert is a difference maker when he plays full out. But yeah, our DL without Albert is nothing special (name the best DL guy not named Albert), our secondary looked not so great last year and our OLBs, Carter and Orakpo, are probably better off with their hands down.

I think there is a lot of talent on the defense, so it can be special -- if Albert is taking down the interior of the other team's OL.

Remember that the league mandates that 30 minutes of each practice must be open to reporters. It could very well be that Fat Albert is taking very few rep during those 30 minutes and is getting most of the reps during the rest of practice. Just like I said last night, Shanahan is all about the smoke and mirrors. We won't know for sure what's going to happen until it actually happens.

I want a straight 3rd and a conditional 2nd.

The 2nd-rounder would be granted if the following criteria are met:

A.) AH is only helped off the field twice. (that's PER GAME folks)
B.) If AH actually practices more than once a week.
C.) If AH actually LOOKS like he's interested in playing football for a living.
D.) AH can play 60% of the defensive snaps per game.
E.) AH can get his pee-breaks under 10 minutes.

If all the above criteria are met, the jerkwad is worth a 2nd and a 3rd.

I would really like to stuff Tom Brady in the ass.

Poor people, please remember that I am a future HOF player.

Albert Haynesworth back at UTENN:

Coach, where did y'all put my HOF bust?

Phil Fulmer:

It's mounted in the latrine we built right outside the stadium, as per Peyton Manning's request.

And get Donte Stallworth to drive you there, why doncha?

La Confora was on 106.7 ST8 HATING on the Skins and called their D "nothing Special" without AH and called out WR corps one of the worst 5 in the league. Is he bitter?

I agree that the defense will be nothing special. I also can't think of many teams with a worse wr corp. Keep in mind that wr corp does not include the TEs.

Jason LaCanofsoda needs to learn to push himself away from the table once in a while.

Jesus dude, mix in a little fiber and a salad or two.

What a tubby little bastard.

Actually going through FF rankings is a good way to figure this out, not exactly a Scientific analysis but I cannot think of a better one for now.

Here is how ESPN FF ranks the skins WR's

Santana Moss, 32
Devin Thomas, 81
Bobby Wade, 83
Malcolm Kelly*, 100
Mike Furrey*, 119
Joey Galloway, 131
Roydell Williams, 157
Anthony Armstrong, 157

You did last year in the preseason. Tom Brady had a very confused look when you tired to help him up. Similar to the one Romor will have

“Mike Tomlin declines to say if Ben Roethlisberger will be Steelers starting QB after suspension”

He won't because Dennis Dixon is The Truth!!

Dixon is the best player in the NFL that no one talks about.

Reid needs to take notes from John Keim on how to be a Skins beat reporter. Redskins Confidential doesn't have 10 posts every day about Albert Haynesworth that don't provide any real information and are just speculation and opinion. As far as JLC goes he is basically a scab level NFL information guy. He only got a job at NFL Network because they were too cheap to keep Adam Schefter and nobody really gets paid working for them except Rich Eisen. Has JLC analyzed the roster of every NFL team and really concluded that the Skins have a bottom 5 WR group? Absolutely not. Just throw out an opinion based on the poor reports he reads from local media about the WR's. Defense nothing special without Haynesworth? Did he look at the Skins 1st team D during preseason? How about the last 3 seasons with Haynesworth only coming into the fold last year for 12 games and only playing with any effort half the time? That toad needs do some research. Maybe the Post can pony up enough money to get Dave Elfin (an old school Skins writer)from Fanhouse and stop hiring these low budget hacks.

It seems that the JLa bashers of last year have become the Reid bashers of this year. Believe me, I am not here to defend Jabba The Hut Reid. But none of this is about them being haters. This lame-azz reporting has more to do with WaPo editorial policy than lazy, bitter reporters. Controversy sells, and I'll bet you Haney's remaining contract that the RI reporters are required to write at least one daily Haney update.

Reid doesn't have the power or the brains to make the decision on what gets printed. It's just sad to see a once great sports page turned into a gossip rag.

Wake up!

Nothing less than a first or a second+third for fat Albert.

And that's why we'll have him here this season.

JASON,
YOU HAVE..WHAT 4 DIFFERENT ARTICLES ON A.H., JUST TODAY? DO YOU GO TO BED DREAMING OF FAT ALBERT?
THERE ARE 52 OTHER PLAYERS ON THE TEAM..5 DAYS BEFORE DALLAS....YOU TELLING ME, THERE ARE NO OTHER STORIES TO TALK ABOUT? YOU ARE NOT EVEN REPORTING NEW INFORMATION..JUST REGURGITATING WHAT HAS BEEN SAID ON COUNTLESS
OCCASIONS.
UNEMPLOYMENT IS 9.5%..HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP YOUR JOB?

Skins are NOT going to trade Albert...they're going to keep him benched and inactive every week until Shanny decides Albert is committed to playing for the Skins. Dan paid a lot of money for Haynesworth and isn't going to give Albert the satisfaction of letting him play for another team.

More Haynesworth. More Haynesworth. More Haynesworth. More Haynesworth. More Haynesworth. More Haynesworth. More Haynesworth.

Posted by: paul6554 | September 8, 2010 9:09 AM | Report abuse

Because FatAlbert is lazy and doesn't have the energy for both the game and the practice. We're talkin' bout practice, man, practice....Screw FatAlbert!

Posted by: KDSmallJr | September 8, 2010 11:29 AM | Report abuse

JR -- why would you write this? Didn't Shanny ask you not to print personnel stuff? Whether or not Fat Albert plays, the skins are better off without Dallas knowing who is getting the practice reps --particularly with a player that Dallas would have to gameplan around. Hopefully your "sources" were just using you to dupe Dallas. If not, the skins should take your press creds -- most of us are sick of losing to Dallas so get on board or get out.
